cleaning up the gouges as well as I could. All that to say, Keith: PM on

Sure enough. I could be wrong, but i doubt it "slipped" out of the hole. It's
really easy to install them without being lined up. I've done it a dozen
times, which is why I mentioned it. I'd take a file and smooth the rough

If it still doesn't work, send me a PM. I might have something to trade, and

I had both a 58 QB and a 58 SO. I kept the SO.
They have identical geo. and only slight variations with regards to things

I don't know about tubing differences. The QB was made by Panasonic and
the SO by Maxway, I think. However, my feeling between the two bikes was
that the QB was a *little* spritelier and the SO a *little* more heavy
duty.Maybe different tubing specs, not sure?

Looks like all the self energizing ones were black. I thought non-SE like on
the bike pro page were vapor ware and never really made it to market, but I
appear to be wrong. I'd still check the internal springs to make sure they
didn't get switched to the wrong sides. Since they were made by dia compe,
they likely have the same springs as 987s which are color coded. As you look
at the bike from the front or rear, the arm on the left should use the yellow
spring, with silver on the right. I think. ( might also be backwards since
your adjuster nut is on the other side of the arm compared to the dia compes?)
It will work with the springs reversed, just barely, because even a spring that
is UN-wound will want to return to its neutral position. Also, there are
little holes that either end of the spring needs to plug into, at the arm and
tension adjuster nut. It will fit together even if not engaged, so verify that

Wait, did you say XC pro?! If I'm not mistaken, those are self energizing
which licensed the pederson technology - which means that they are front and
rear specific and, if you accidentally mix things up, they wont work well.
(I've also heard it could be dangerous by causing them to lock up, but that
might be an urban myth for all I know.) I'd look for F markings to make sure
you haven't mis-matched halves or bought two "front" sets or something, and
then search mtbr using "pederson" or "self energizing" or "xc pro canti setup
help." You'll probably find what you need. Seems like they were a bit of an
acquired taste, but well built.

Thanks, all, for the brake tips. The mounts do have three holes, but this
particular model (Suntour XC Pro) uses an internal spring. Haven't opened
it up yet, but should be simple enough, based on this explanation
.
There's more cable drag than I'd like for the rear (probably my own fault!)
so I haven't ruled that out, either.

Meanwhile, the front feels *excellent *and is already making me a fan of
canti's!

Philip - The other neat thing about the PDW mounts, as you might already
know, is that they can break away. Quite reassuring on wooded trails!

Congratulations on the child! And the Quickbeam. The Quickbeam may stay in
the house longer than the kid...
That's a great looking build. The shiny fenders over the Delta Cruisers is
a nice look, and complements the clean chainguard. Thanks for bringing
those PDW fender mounts to my attention, too. I have yet to cut the fender
stays on my green Quickbeam after... many years, and the PDW attachment
looks so clean. Might be just what I need to finish the bike.

Shame about the brakes. What kind are they? I would second the other
suggestions to check the cable drag (does the lever return snappily and
fully?), spring tension, symmetrical setup, etc. You might double-check
that the wheel is straight in the frame, but it would probably rub the
fenders if it wasn't.

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam

2010-06-13 Thread Lee
Thanks, Ryan! I've been battling the VO Model 6 saddle for a year and
a half now. I've tried it out on other bikes, and now the Quickbeam.
The saddle is modeled after the Brooks Swallow, so a more aggressive
bar-to-saddle drop ought to help. Initially, I had it set up on a bike
where the bars were level to the saddle. This upright position
didn't work out that great, as I could never get my sit bone placement
quite right. Then, the leather began to sag a bit and one end of the
cantle created a noticeable bump on the saddle top. I say noticeable b/
c I was riding in to work (42 miles one-way) and by the time I got in
I had a nice memento of the trip on my behind that stayed with me for
a while. I guess that's the hammock aspect that you saw in the pic. I
decided to re-tension the bolt and it did remove some of the sag. I'm
still keeping a wary eye out for that bump to reappear.

In any event, in this use, where I'm a little more crouched, I
initially found that the saddle felt like a paddle, with a small flat
roundish surface underneath your sit bones, and defined edges that I
could feel on the back of my thighs. That annoyed me, but I thought
that this might be a break-in process. I've only ridden it this way
for a week, but I can see how the edges beneath my thighs may break
down some and create a smoother, sloped surface--much like the nice
shape that the Swallow has from the get-go. If it doesn't work out,
I'll probably offer it up on the list with all caveats included and
get myself a Swift.

Sorry for the long answer. But I'm drinking coffee and waiting for the
laundry to finish :)

Best,
Lee

It has kind of a hammock shape.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the bike. Never seen a Rivendell I didn't

Hi all. I just wanted to follow-up with pics of my finished
Quickbeam. I expect it'll undergo some tweaks over the next month or
two. Right now, I'm using it as my commuter, but I hope to start
taking it out for some long rides pretty soon. It's in 650B-mode with
an old set of Nifty Swiftys. I have it geared 41x16/19 for 67/56 gear
inches on the freewheel side, and 41x16 on the fixed side. I've ridden
it free for two commutes and fixed for one. It'll be interesting to
see on which side the coin lands. I find both styles of riding fun. My
main focus right now is getting a feel for the geometry and dialing in
the fit.

The only problem I have with it is after getting into work, I spend
the first half-hour thinking about the ride in--okay, maybe more than
a half-hour.

Thanks for everyone's input!

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics

2010-05-22 Thread Michael Rivers
I'm running a 42 ring up front with a Phil fixed 17t in back
currently, although I put a Dos Eno 16/19 on the original wheel set as
well. I live in flat Northern VA, and never used the 34t ring up
front, and decided I needed more gear inches than the stock 40/18 60
inches. I also had issues with the stock triple crank (two rings and
a chain guard), and wide Q, so I put the 42 ring on a Sugino double.
I didn't change the BB, so have a quiet chain with the ring on the
inside position of the spider.

One of the coolest things about the Quickbeam is that you can play
with the transmission to your hearts content. I even ran front and
rear ders, with thumb shifters at one point because I had a hilly
century to ride, and my geared bike was in pieces on the floor of my
garage! Enjoy, and change your mind frequently.

on my Schwinn single-speeds, what with the one-piece crank and all.

Your DOS calculation seems right on, as 42mm would put the chainline
right between the cogs. I plan on running fixed on the other side, but
I bet that the fixed cog will work out to 42mm obviously. Now I just
have to find a suitable crank and chainwheel setup, as I don't have
the original QB crankset, and I'd rather run a single chainring (for
now), with lower Q-factor if possible/affordable.

 Thanks again :)

I'm wondering if this is so in regards to the Riv Suzue free/free hub.
The thread in general was focused on the Quickbeam, but Sheldon hadn't

chainline with a single cog.  A Sugino XD double on a VO 103mm bottom

The advantage of my set-up is that it's close to the original range

Thanks, Jeremy. I saw an old thread involving Sheldon in which he
said:

White Industries singlespeed hubs are intended for about a 47.5 mm
chainline with a singlespeed freewheel or typical fixed sprocket.

The double sprocket pretty much splits the difference, giving
chainlines
of about 45 50.

I'm wondering if this is so in regards to the Riv Suzue free/free hub.
The thread in general was focused on the Quickbeam, but Sheldon hadn't
received the DOS yet to actually measure it.

Best,
Lee

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics

2010-05-21 Thread Jeremy Till
The 47.5mm hub chainline is specific to White Industries hubs (i've
got one of those too!). Most normal track hubs (including the
Suzue, the double-free QB one was based off of their track hub) are
nominally a 42mm chainline. But, if you just take sheldon's numbers
for the DOS on a white hub and minus 5.5 mm (47.5-42), you should get
the chainlines of a DOS on a 42mm hub- so 39.5mm and 44.5mm.
Approximately.

Welcome to the single-speed club--calculating chainline is one of our
initiation rites.

This article is about fixed gear set-up but can be equally applied to
SS rigs, it has some good stuff including a how to measure chainline
on the bike:

2010-05-21 Thread Lee
Jeremy, thanks so much. That's really helpful. And you're right, you
should have seen me last night, a couple of empty beer bottles, quad-
ruled paper, a million (one million!) tabs opened up in my browser
going over crank, hub, cog combinations, etc. It all seems so simple
on my Schwinn single-speeds, what with the one-piece crank and all.

2010-05-20 Thread Tyler
I use a white industries 16/19 freewheel with the stock 40/32 front
chainring setup that came with it from Riv. I'm very happy with the
setup and use the 16 and the 19 about equally depending on what kind
of riding I'm planning on doing for the day. I haven't needed to
change the gearing in the middle of a ride (just at the beginning) nor
have I needed the 32 front ring yet.

The only downside is that the white industries dos freewheel sounds
like a swarm of angry bees when I'm coasting. It's excellent
motivation to not stop pedaling but also a good way to annoy the
person you're drafting.

a fond memory. Love the color.

If I did it again, I'd do it exactly the same way. With no desire to
switch gears other than annual switch to lower gearing for plowing
through snow in the winter. Fixed, single ring/cog. Phil Wood out
back, dynamo up front. Nitto mini rack up front, Rivendell Big rack
out back.

Good luck, most of all have fun!

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics

2010-05-20 Thread Ron MH
That's a fine looking bike, Lee.
I'm running the stock chainring setup (40-32) with a White Ind. DOS
16-19 freewheel in back and a 16t fixed cog on the flip side. I ride
the bike 80% of the time fixed 40x16.

Jim is right about the noisy Sugino chainrings. My 40t is somewhat
squeaky even with a perfectly clean and lightly lubed chain. The
chainring also has a bit of runout which causes unevenness in the
chain tension as the crank rotates. I wonder if a better class of
chainring would be quieter? I'm considering a move to a 42t front.
But, I want to stick with the 3/32 chain as I have some $ in the White
Industries freewheel and fixed cogs.

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam frame/fork pics

2010-05-20 Thread Jeremy Till
Don't know anything about the DOS/Suzue combo specifically, but on a
Phil hub my surly Dingle Cog gave me ~38mm and ~43mm chainlines; i'd
image the suzue hub would be similar since they both aim for a 42mm
chainline with a single cog. A Sugino XD double on a VO 103mm bottom
bracket lines up well, with the driveside crank is snugged up pretty
tight to the bottom bracket cup (luckily the way it's machined
prevents any rubbing).

Thanks all, for the great information. That's a lot of food for
thought. I do like the idea of the DOS freewheel. Does anyone know the
chainline of the DOS in combination with the Riv Suzue free/free hub?

 Best,
 Lee

  Congratulations. That's a nice color.

I ride the QB more than my other bikes. It just makes me smile.

I kept the 32t chainring and changed out the 40t in front for a 36t. I
run a White 16/19 freewheel. I usually ride everywhere/all the time in
36/16 (about the same as the stock 40/18). I use the 32/19 only when
I'm carrying a load or riding alone out of town into the mountains.
The advantage of my set-up is that it's close to the original range
(which is pretty good for mixed riding) and yet it requires very
little axle movement with the gear switch. This allows me to have a
really nice fender line and also lets me remove the rear wheel without
touching the fender Also, chainline is better compared to the stock
  set-up.

As of yesterday, I've got the Nitto Big rack in the back and Nitto
small in the front (with a basket). I installed the Nitto big rack in
the rear to give me a little more carrying capacity. This required
sawing off the little tabs on the rack that would have made getting
  the wheel off more complicated.

Hi everyone. I just joined this group, though I've been lurking for a
while. Yesterday, through a fast and fortunate series of events, I
picked up a used Quickbeam frame/fork/extras. Here's a small Flickr
   set:

I'm currently mulling over drivetrain ideas and would be happy to hear
suggestions or experiences. Currently, I'm thinking I'll do fixed/free
for a while to get used to the bike. Then, make changes as needed.
