[TANKS] Re: Brushless scooter controller rc interface

If the motors you want to operate, are brushless, why dont use brushless rc
controllere for rc cars? I use 2 of these in my
Centurion:
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbykingtm-brushless-car-esc-2s-4s-60a-w-reverse.html

They are good for up to 800watt

O no-You cant use brushless aeroplane motors for a tank! And you cant use
3D printer to make moving parts with!!
I done both-motors are 2* 800 watt brushless aeroplane motors running on 4S
lipo
And all moving parts are printet with PLA on my 3D printer.
And iam happy with the outcome!

[TANKS] Re: Centurion mrk5

2016-10-23 Thread Niels Erik Kristensen

Inside the printed parts there ara a 6mm steel plate, the 2* 12 mm axels
are 25 mm apart, one goes to the wheel, and the other goes inside the tank.
Inside there are a 6cm arm on the axel, and a bolt to adjust the tension
with. Hope that give you a idea of how it works ?

Painting of my Centurion in progress. I have the fortune to visit a garage
where old retried tank crews are holding some old tanks in mint condition.
They get out to shoot ones a year, and precipitate in shows around Denmark.
On my wisit i got 5 liters of the original green color with me , to use on
my Centurion mrk 5. Tery loved my tank, and i have promised to come back
when i am are finis building it ;.)

Re: [TANKS] Re: Centurion mrk 5

2016-04-18 Thread Niels Erik Kristensen
Yes thats right :-)-tests have been made-After one year outside in sun and
rain, an objeckt made of pla will get pale, but nothing are seen on the
plastic.
The most common form of bioplastic is polylactide acid or PLA and is made
out of corn. Unfortunately, in order for PLA do biodegrade, it needs a
certain kind of bacteria at just the right temperature. These are not found
in landfills, (where most plastic bags end up), but require treatment at
one of 42 commercial composting facilities in the U.S.

So i will not take my Centurion near one of the 42 composting
facilities-But just stay in Denmark-And my tank will be safe :-)

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I think I'll stick to brushed motors
for now. Frank's points make a lot of sense to me. One more thing that
concerns me about the outrunners is that most of the housing I've seen are
open. That's good when you're flying a plane and want to use the air flow
to cool the motor. It's bad when there's dust and dirt everywhere and Will
is trying to shoot paint up my tank's ass !

I haven't looked at brushless motors in detail, but from a couple years of
Physics in college I learned that when you increase voltage/current in a
coil, you increase the strength of the magnetic field generated by the
coil. So, I suspect that the RPMs per volt rating for brushless motors
tells you how much voltage needs to be applied to pull the armature hard
enough for a given speed. Presumably, that rating is for a 100% duty cycle
(i.e., max speed). Indeed, the controller pulses the voltage for two
purposes (a) to spin the motor one way or another and
 (b) to regulate the speed (i.e., decrease the average voltage seen by the
 coil).

With regard to torque, for a given duty cycle, if you decrease the input
voltage the torque will also decrease. But, if you maintain the same input
voltage, while decreasing the duty cycle, the torque will remain relatively
stable while the speed decreases. That's why really big earth movers and
locomotives use diesel-electric drive systems ...
maximal torque across a range of RPMs.

On 7/29/2015 12:18 PM, TyngTech wrote:
Can't say I truly understand the brushless nomenclature (i.e. KVA)
because nobody ever talks about the controller side. Brushless motors
are basically steppers and without the controller are inert chunks of
iron and copper. What I don't get is the KVA ratings (rpm's per volt)
of these motors. In my mind, the controller dictates rpm by how fast
it is energizing the phases, not by how much voltage is being applied.
Voltage would affect acceleration and torque or am I getting this
 wrong?

 Mike and Derek,
Thank you for your input. What motors would you advise in the 24V range?
The Panther weighs about 100lbs now, but will ultimately be around 135lbs
 range.

 I currently have x2 12V Batteries, 18Ah each (Standby use 12.6 - 13.8V,
 2.7A, Cycle Use 14.5-14.9V -5.4A).
My motors datasheet shows (for left motor, directly mounted to sprocket -
Right motor is spinner clockwise and performance slightly different):

Data Type Value Range No Load Current (A) 0.9-0.7
Speed (RPM) 116.2-95.1 Stall Load Torque (Nm) 21.3-17.5
 Current (A) 13.0-14.7 Peak Power Power (W) 60.0-49.1
Torque (Nm) 11.1-9.1 Nominal Power (W) 36.5 Nominal (Peak Efficiency)

Mike is right. 24V motors are better than 12V motors since the 24V
motors will be more efficient and actually use less amperage. Sounds like
you just need to get 24V motors with more torque. Also if the batteries
are not up to the task to delivery the amps the power hungry motors are
asking for, that will also translate into no power. The 24V scooter motors
in my KV-2 are more than powerful enough to propel the 150lb. tank. The
batteries I was testing with (7AH x2, 12V in series to produce 24V@7AH)
could make the tank do neutral turns while fully charged, but the power
hungry motors will drain the puny batteries in less than 10 minutes. I use
less powerful motors on my Sturmtiger. It weighs in at about 100lbs. With
proper batteries it will do neutral turns on concrete with my 190lbs
sitting on the tank. I don't sit on it anymore since I bent a few of the
swing arms by doing that... :)

Dropping down in voltage probably not the answer for a zero turn on
grass. I tried a couple different voltages (6 ans 12) and found the lesser
voltage simply didn't have enough omph to turn the tank. 12v was obviously
better. If I could I would bump up to 24 or even 36 volts to get the power
required to zero turn, not to mention less amp draw over a 12v system.

Tracks that grab will actually hurt pivot turning. Smoother tracks seem
to let the tank pivot easier.

Not yet Neil. The motors are 24V and not powerful enough. no problem
making a 360 on asphalt or concrete. We only reach 2km/hr or 1.3 mph (12
km/hr scale). This tank cruised at 46 km/hr. We are looking into other
motors right now (12V with more amps). Also we are concerned about the
accurate Panther tracks which grooves might grab on the grass on a
360degree turn. That would not be good for plastic tracks. Suggestions and
 critics are welcomed!

engine-Can do a better job, for less money.
I can se a lot of religion in here, about witch motors that are usable
for tanks. Nobody seems to have tried a brushless setup-But eweryone now
that they are not good enough compared to a old and heawy scooter motor!!
So i rest my case, and hope to bring a video of my brushless setup-And then

Guess which of the following is much harder to start from rest:

 1) A propeller spinning through air
 2) A propeller spinning through water
 3) A wheel moving a lightweight vehicle on pavement
 4) A wheel moving a heavyweight vehicle on rough ground
 5) A track moving a heavyweight vehicle on rough ground

Watts alone don't solve the start up problem. Torque, timing (in
brush-less motors) and overload protection are critical.

We want the strongest, fastest, cheapest and most reliable drive

[TANKS] Why not brushless motors??

2013-03-29 Thread Niels Erik Kristensen
Why du everyone use big heavy and week brushed motors? Most of you use
motors that weight about 1 kilo, and only give 350-400 watt-And cost 60 usd
ore more.
Furtermore its dificult to buy regulators to them, so many tankers
control there tanks with a system of relays?

In my plans i will use cheap, light and powerfull brushless motors, and
real regulators with propotional control in both forward and rewerse-With
brake:-)

The motor i will use weight about 200 grams, and give about 800 watt on 4S
lipo battery ( 14,8 volt) And i will control the motors with a 50 A boat
regulator-Watercooled and with a max boost to 60 Amp. The regulator give me
full control both forward and reverse, with brake.

My motor cost under 13 usd!! The regulator cost about 18 usd

Motors that most tanker use have speed reducers to provide about
400 rpm directly to the tank driveshaft.

Furtermore its dificult to buy regulators to them, so many tankers

Very few tanks still use relays. Almost all use off-the-shelf
dual channel speed controllers with right-left mixing.
 I recommend the Sabretooth 2x60
 http://www.dimensionengineering.com/products/sabertooth2x60

We hope that you can sucessfully complete your tank with
 this motor/controller solution.

You will need to build two systems that no other tankers have wanted to
 try.
 a) 30 to 1 speed reducer (14.8V * 820 rpm/V = 12136 rpm)

[TANKS] Re: Why not brushless motors??

2013-03-29 Thread Niels Erik Kristensen
In my link you can see thatt he motors cost about 18 usd, and the 50 Amp
controller cost about 18 usd-That is almost 10 times cheaper than a scooter
motor and a regulator?
As i write in the beginning, i will ad water cooling, and use aircooling to
my motors-And a outrunner engine can run both ways with no problem, I have
also been flying rc for about 25 years-And only with brushless motors the
last 5 years-And i use the motors both as pusher and tractor, and in 2
motors planes with counter rotating props.
I have made a reduktion gears with chain and spocket, for a price of about
100 usd, for both motors-And remember my motors weight only 200 grams, but
they are good for about 700-800 watt-Thats twice the power of a scooter
motor

Brushless motors are more expensive, and their corresponding controllers
are way more expensive than brushed motors. Yes, you will get better speed,
control, and space management, but it all comes at a price. The problem
with the motors that you posted is that they are designed for RC airplanes,
and NOT for ground vehicles. They are intended to spin in only one
direction, at very high speed spinning a propeller. You could have a higher
possibility of them burning out when you put them into a sudden reverse
polarity. These ones probably wont have the TORQ needed as the windings are
designed to have a higher amount of airflow over them in an aircraft to
keep them cool. My words is DO NOT use motors that are designed for the
model aircraft industry. (I have been flying RC aircraft for over 30 years,
and I have seen the bad of them running without good airflow.)

In my plans i will use cheap, light and powerfull brushless motors, and
real regulators with propotional control in both forward and rewerse-With
 brake:-)

The motor i will use weight about 200 grams, and give about 800 watt on
 4S lipo battery ( 14,8 volt) And i will control the motors with a 50 A boat
regulator-Watercooled and with a max boost to 60 Amp. The regulator give me

I no about the 680 watt -But i have 2 planes with that motor, and in both
planes i pull way more than 800 watt, exatly they pull 960 watt-And they
dont get overheatet. A freind of mine made a elecktrick bicykle, with that
motor, and running almost 20 kmh with no problem-And he weight a bit more
than my tank-And i have 2 of these motors :-)

in my rc cars.. up to 3 hp for a 25 lb buggy that used to have a 30cc gas
motor. It works great for that .. but it does not have the torque to move
heavy objects. The big brushed motors have big magnets and wiring so they
can move a wheel chair or scooter weighing 200lbs or more. You say that
the regulators.. ESC... are difficult to find, they are easy to find and
are very cheap. I think that the motors you are talking about will not
work in anything that is 1/6 scale.
I have many electric motors of all sizes and types.. for tanks you need a
 tank size motor.
 My 2 cents worth..

PS the chain saw maby have 10 hp, the v8 has 400 hp-So that are not

I haven't been on in forever, but I've been working a little on my
T/34/85. I see a guy in Denmark is doing one also; it looks great.

I am drawing closer to having a rolling chassis, slowly but surely. The
last couple days have seen a burst of activity. Between a computer build,
my school's first robot (courtesy of Vex), and chores, I haven't gotten a
lot done. But I'm close to finished with the tracks. I WILL finish this.
Pictures will come with a designation on the website, I guess. Regardless
of many issues (mistakes, problems, errors, failures, whatever), my tank
has still managed to look cool! I hope that when I'm finished, though, I
can do a good cosmetics job. This tank has already been a great learning
experience, and if I build another it's sure to be a vast improvement
because of the experience I've gained.

I also noticed people talking about a gyro stabilizer. I like that idea,
but I have no finished tank and no knowledge of the technology except that
it exists. I believe it was introduced in the Second World War, so surely
someone can do it in a big model now.

Has anyone integrated Arduino with their tank? I've never used it before,
only PICAXE products. From what I hear, it would be a solid platform to
 help control a tank.

Also--what about remote control systems? I have to admit I've never tried
to put together one before, and I would love some input on what you guys
think works best. By the way, Niels (Is that right?) from Denmark: amazing
control system! I hope it works out for you!

So, is the cost of feeding video to a controller prohibitive? I wouldn't
have any idea how to do it, either, but there's always the Internet--in
fact, my sole source of electronics information

 Happy battling!

Re: [TANKS] Re: T34-85 from Denmark

2013-02-12 Thread Niels Erik Kristensen
Yes they are only 2mm thick-And it is leftover from my tracks-They ar made
of a ½*5/16 chain, with taps on both sides-And ca 180 pices of 9cm long
2*20mm steel.
But if the strenght become a problem, i can weld more steel to the arms,
pretty easy. Iam thinking somthing like a pice of 6mm piano wire to the
outside of each arm

i want to make sure i just read that correctly, your arms are only 2mm
 thick?

i don't have anything on hand for converting metric to standard weights
(to figure the weight supported per arm), but even so, 2mm thick arms seem
 very thin.

did you choose that thickness hoping to keep down on some of the tank's
overall weight? what about 1/4 or 6+mm (or 10mm) aluminum flat bar if it's
 weight your concerned about

 Chris
