[RCSE] 9303 w/2.4 module question

2008-05-06 Thread Robert Samuels

I have a 9303 with a 2.4 module. The 2.4 antenna mount uses a plastic adapter
which screws in to replace the 72 mhz antenna.

Is there any reason I cannot simply mount the 2.4 antenna on top of the
collapsed 72 mhz antenna? In other words, do I have to remove the 72 mhz
antenna?

[RCSE] 2.4 drop out

2008-03-21 Thread Robert Samuels

This is in regard to Don Richmond's loss of plane due to the 2.4 receiver
taking too long to reboot.

Horizon will upgrade any DSM2 receiver (including the AR6100) to what they call
Quick Connect. They do something to the firmware whatever that is so that
if the signal is lost it does not go through a 2-5 second re-boot. It just
reconnects in an instant.

And they do this at no charge. Also they replaced the antennas with a wire
that had more flexible insulation. And replaced the harness that connects the
main receiver with the remote receiver as the grey wire had the same brittle
insulation as the antennas.

All for the same price.

[RCSE] Antenna Follies

2008-02-09 Thread Robert Samuels

I had a transmitter antenna problem last
year. My Futaba 8 U has a Smiley Rubber Ducky antenna. This attaches
by means of a spring loaded bayonet mount. Due to the design the
spring loading allows the mating pin to flex back and fourth a bit.
After years of use I found the pin had broken off and that I had been
flying with the antenna connection just barely touching. I think that
is what caused the crash of my Organic at last years Nats.

So
I bought a new Rubber Ducky antenna assuming I would get a few more
years of use before it failed. I was wrong. I just checked it and
found it had failed the same way. After only a few months of use.
Probably due to all the HL flying I've been doing which causes a lot of
flexing of the spring loaded mount back and fourth during the launching
process with it's attendant mating pin flexing.

Glad I caught it during a shop check.

[RCSE] 2.4 install problems

2007-12-13 Thread Robert Samuels

I bought a 2.4 9303 and
installed an AR6200 in an Organic which has an all Kevlar nosecone.
But it does not work. I put the main receiver in the nose with the
antennas fore and aft and the remote receiver on the bottom of the fuse
behind the tow hook with the antennas exiting the fuse through small holes so
that the antennas were pointing
left and right. The range is lousy.

I put
an AR6100 in the nose of a DLG TabooGt (all carbon fuse) with the
antennas sticking out the sides so it looks like a little catfish. The
range was poor. So I extended the antennas by laying a piece of
insulated wire along side the original antennas held with heat shrink
so that the new wire was 31 mm longer than the original antennas. This
gave me decent range and I've flown it successfully. But I don't like
all that wire sticking out in the airflow. I'd like a better
arrangement but can not think of one.

Does anyone know of any
successful installations in these planes? Or have suggestions?

Thank you

Robert Samuels St. Louis

Re: [RCSE] Foil Wing Bags joining edges

2006-08-25 Thread Robert Samuels
When using the foil/bubble wrap from HomeDepot there is an easy way to join
the edges. Using a straight edge about 1/4 inch in from the edge, cut
through one layer of foil. Then peel back the strip. You will then have
some of the bubble plastic left where you peeled off the strip. Do that
with the other edge you wish to join. Place the exposed plastic on the
edges together and seal with a hot covering iron.

My explanation is not very elegant, sorry. It's the best I can do today.

[RCSE] How high?

Some time ago I put an Avocet wrist altimeter into my 3.2 meter plane and
thermalled it up to where I could barely see it. The altimeter max. alt.
read 2,400 ft.

Recently I read a review of a small on board max. altitude recording thingee
and the reviewer said he thermalled his 3 meter up to 2,300 ft. at which
point he could barely see the plane.

I've had a guy tell me he was able to fly his plane to over 3,500 ft. as
measured by a full scale plane that was at the same altitude. (the r/c pilot
was on the ground). I don't believe him.

Who, among you, have measured how high you can see (fly) your 3 meter? How
high were you able to go and still control the plane?

[RCSE] Problems with GE Silicone II

2006-06-22 Thread Robert Samuels
I installed two JR 281 servos in a HL pod made of hybrid Kevlar/carbon cloth
using GE Silicone II. After a bit of use one servo popped loose. I
reinstalled it with Silicone II. The Silicone did not cure. I tested the
Silicone by squeezing a bead on a piece of paper in the open and it did not
cure.

I got a new tube. Tested it in the open and it cured. Re-installed the
servo and the portion of the Silicone that squeezed out from beneath the
servo cured but the film between the servo and the pod did not. Then the
servo quit working. No response whatsoever.

I don't know if the servo failure is related to anything. I don't know
what's going on at all. Can anyone help me? I'd like to use Goop but I
think I'm locked into using Silicone since I used it first. Am I correct?
Or is there a way of decontaminating the Siliconed surface?

Have just wired my Mantis, and the tail servos work fine, but the wing
servos twitch and/or vibrate. The flap servo seems to work fine but make
extra noises, the others just vaguely move as commanded by the transmitter
sticks but jump around a lot. I tried putting a capacitor between signal
and ground near one of the wing servos, but it didn't make much difference.
This has worked for me before. I've got the wires twisted to try to prevent
interference. Rx is in nose with battery, then a cable runs to a DB9 which
connects with one from the wing. The power wires are doubled up to cut
resistance, and I've got double pins on most of the connections at the DB9
(except flap signal). Doubled up pins are connected with each other.
Suggestions?

[RCSE] incidence

2006-06-03 Thread Robert Samuels
Some time ago I was assembling a new unlimited ship and queried this group
as to what incidence was correct. I got lot's of answers from very
knowledgeable people (you might want to check the archives). The
suggestions ranged from 0 degrees to 2.5 degrees. The most cogent response
was from a gentleman in Germany who suggested 1.75 degrees which I used and
which gave me very satisfactory results. I now realize that virtually any
setting within this range will work fine.

One very practical suggestion was to use just a little bit.

Looking for Advice on Wing Incidence.

I am looking forward to flying in the June ESL event at LISF on Long
Island.

I hope to see some of you there.

I have a old yellow and blue Airtronics Legend that I am trying to tune up.
I picked up a wing incidence meter and am trying to set the wing/h-stab
incidence. I don't have a recommended spec so I am trying to shoot for
something reasonable.

If I set the stab at 0 degrees on my GP incidence meter, the wing measures
1.5 degrees below the zero. I guess that would be 1.5 degrees positive
relative to the stab, correct?

Any recommendations on a good starting target?

It used to be more but I added 1/32 in shims under the rear wing hold down
to raise the back of the wing about 6 months ago and it seemed to fly
better. So I bought the incidence meter and want to set it correctly.
Unfortunately I have no idea if I am right on the money or way off. I have
the build manual but there is no recommendation in the book.

Would a 0 degree difference between the wing and the stab be a reasonable
starting point? I am thinking that there should be some difference but I
may

have too much.

I hope to be able to upgrade to a Mantis or similar by the end of the
summer, but for now this is what I have to fly. Until then, I will chalk
up

the work I do on this plane as a learning experience. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Best Regards,
Ed Anderson

[RCSE] casting lead

2006-01-23 Thread Robert Samuels
I want to cast some lead for ballast into a shape resembling a stick of
butter. I have the lead and a torch that puts out enough heat to melt the
lead but I don't have a ladle nor a mold. I prefer not to spend much (if
any) money for these items as it will be a one time project. Does anyone
know what I can use to melt lead in and how to construct a one time mold
(cheaply)?

I would like to buy (or receive as a gift from someone very generous) a
broken fuse with salvageable tailplanes to use on a 2M. I intend to install
them on a WACO 2M which I plan to convert to an electric powered hotliner.
I'm not picky and can use either cross or v-tail.

[RCSE] Berg receivers

2006-01-04 Thread Robert Samuels
I installed a Berg 5 ch receiver in my DLG. It worked ok when I was alone
at the field. This Sunday I was flying near other flyers. When my plane
got to within 20-30 feet from another transmitter it stopped responding and
crashed. I duplicated the conditions and verified the response (ie: no
response).

I called Castle Creations this morning and was advised that these receivers
were defective. The tech told me that Berg did a disservice to Castle by
cranking out a whole bunch of below standard receivers just before selling
itself to Castle. They will replace them with a new (hopefully working)
receiver.

[RCSE] Still using aileron differential?

2005-06-12 Thread Robert Samuels
I recently followed a link provided by Phil Barnes to a message posted by
Dr. Drela. The message was that Dr. Drela did not use aileron (flaperon)
differential in DLG planes. The rational was that the differential caused
some unwanted pitch changes. My questions concern the application of Dr.
Drela's theory to the larger planes.

I wonder whether you all (experts):

1) still use aileron differential in 2 and 3 meter planes and
2) still couple the ailerons to the flaps (so they act as flaperons)

Hey guys,
Yes it does. Seems like Vladimir ran out of ideas at that point and just
made it that way. I find the ballast works OK by making the ballast rod
just a bit smaller than the diameter of the ballast tube so that it clears
the tow hook. I manage to get up to 23 oz of ballast in it without much
work.

Robert SamuelsSt. Louis

Whats the deal with the tow hook assembly coming up
into the ballast tube area, I don't get it ?

They have a slot in the bottom of the tube so the hook assembly
comes into the tube.

How do you use the tube ?

RE: [RCSE] Flight characteristics of MH32

2005-05-24 Thread Robert Samuels
I have a Graphite2 and an Organic and I had a Magic all with MH32 airfoils.
I love it. MH32 flys just like any other airfoil but, for me, flys better
than any I've previously flown. For launch I droop full span. Landing, drop
flaps and droop (yes droop) the ailerons a bit. Thermaling is mostly
without camber. If camber is used only a tiny bit is needed (1 or 2
degrees) and I use full span (same droop on flaps and ailerons). I don't
use reflex for speed as just putting the nose down does the job for me.

3. Thermaling, some flaps/ailerons

When I was assembling my WACO Magic with MH32 airfoil I had that same
question. I presented the question to RCSE and received numerous replies
which can be seen on the archives. One gentleman in the UK measured two
planes with this airfoil and advised me (if I recall correctly) that it was
1 3/4 degrees. Phil Barnes said he sets up his Mantis with about 1/16 inch
rise under the front of the pylon. Martin Kopplow did quite a bit of
research and confirmed 1 3/4 degrees (positive) was best. That is how I set
up the Magic (which will shortly be for sale) which flys beautifully.

Hi Robert. . .thanks . . . okay, let's say the paint is off in the bad
spots. . .what about the other questions? Any success stories to pass on
explaining how to fill, prime and repaint to match up with the adjacent
paint? Reappearing pinholes?

I've found that rubbing alcohol easily removes Krylon paint from glass
surfaces. I use toilet tissue wetted with the alcohol.

What do those of you do, who bag wings in which the waxed carriers have
been painted, when the paint does not transfer in a spot or flakes off?

How do you fill the spot, fill any exposed weave level it to adjacent
paint, prime, repaint, avoid overspray and finish it off to look
uniformly smooth and shiny? How do you handle pinholes that, after being
filled and wet sanded down, reappear on application of new paint?

How would you remove adjacent remnants of old paint (Krylon) to start
over new, without harming the underlying foam core? Acetone will remove
paint, but ruin foam. What solvent do you use or by what technique do you
remove all paint down to the epoxy? How would you then fill exposed
weave?

Specifically what filler products to you use, then
what primer, what paint?
Please explain your entire technique if you have one that works well.

Twice i've had single cells in a pack become dead. That is, the cell(s)
in

question had no voltage. On the advice from a local battery supplier I
shocked the cell(s) by touching the leads from a 12 volt battery to the
bad cell for an instant. It caused some sparks when I touched the
positive

to positive and negative to negative. It appears to have revived the
cells

and the packs now function normally and have run through charge/dicharge
cycles showing full capapcity. Immediately after the shock the
previously
dead cell had a no load voltage reading of 1.2 volts. Remember, the
?touching of leads was for an instant only. I offer this story for
?information only and have no idea if it is good advice. But it worked for
me.

Robert Samuels..St. Louis
Robert;
Here is what is happening to the cell that has gone dead. A small
whisker grows across the dielectric and causes the battery to become
shorted. By touching 12v across the battery actually burns the whisker and
makes the battery alive again. The problem here is that once this occurs
with a battery then the chances of that battery going dead in the future is
quite high.
I would become very leery about a battery pack that looses a cell.
Chances are all of the batteries in the pack are from the same batch during
manufacturing. If one goes dead then the chances are that the others may
develop problems as well. You may want to rethink the way you maintain
your
batteries. Here is something that I do that has provided me great success
over many years of flying. The first thing is you need to have a good,
accurate battery charger as well as a good, accurate battery cycler.
Here is what I do. When ever I get a new battery back I charge
cycle it 3 times. After the third time I determine the true battery
capacity based upon the time in which it took the battery to become drained
and my discharge rate. EVERY battery I own I write the date new, actual
battery capacity on it. I use a sharpy marker to do this so it doesn't
wear
off. Through out the flying season as I recharge the battery I will cycle
down. I do this every few months, just to make sure the battery is in good
shape. I also make note of the real capacity of the battery. If I loose
10% or more of the battery capacity I no longer use the battery. I may
keep
it for bench work but I will never put it back into a plane or transmitter.
I simply go out and replace the battery.
When charging the battery I always use a C/10 charge rate for
overnight charging. This is safe charge rate and will cause the least
amount of damage if left on for more than 10 - 12 hours. I don't recommend
leaving the batteries on for longer or the battery will heat up and cause
damage to the internal battery structure if done to many times.

I'm sure there are others out there that may have a more refined
approach for battery maintenance, but this works for me. I can honestly
say
that I have not had a battery failure in over 20 years of flying. I
adapted
this maintenance practice after I crashed one of my old time favorite power
planes back in the mid 80's. There is too much to risk when dealing with
questionable batteries. I know when I go to the field I am flying with a
set of batteries that I know exactly what condition they are in.

Happy New Year.
Kurt

Re: [RCSE] Antenna Wire

2004-11-21 Thread Robert Samuels
No. The futaba service rep was quite specific in specifying the finest wire
possible. We discussed using a single strand of music wire which he thought
would be optimum. As I mentioned I have used such antennas for several
years with excellent results. (that is my planes have not fallen from the
sky due to antenna problems. When they did fall it was almost inevitably
from pilot error)

Robert Samuels..St. Louis
From: Simon Van Leeuwen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think what the Futaba service rep meant was to utilize lead material that
has the highest strand count you can find. This, in an effort to increase
mechanical integrity. I don't think he meant to say use the finest single
strand wire...

RE: [RCSE] What is the current highest capacity for AA size batteries on the mar

2004-11-06 Thread Robert Samuels
I've been using 1650 mah packs from RadicalRC both in my transmitters and in
my planes. They work very well. According to RadicalRC these cells have a
history of reliability that the higher rated cells don't have. I've found
they give full capacity, charge up easy and discharge at a rate which is
more than adequate for use in a plane with 6 digital servos.

I would like some advice on how to properly and permanently connect a
quicklink to a carbon rod? I know it sounds basic, but I never had to do
it, so .. Is it enough to just roughen up the carbon rod and glue it with
epoxy ? It's meant for a F3J glider (Muller Esprit), if that's important.
BTW, this message might show up twice after a while: the first doesn't seem
to come through after 12 hours, but it sill might ..
Thanks,

How will a 120 degree rather than a 110 degree angle of the V tail affect
performance?

OK, so I'm hard at work on my 2 meter pod and boom V tail hand launch/slope
soarer built according to the strictest TLAR criteria.. I thought I had
everything properly rigged to get a 110 degree angle on the V tail but,
like the craftsman, himself, somethings seem to have sagged. So now I have
a 120 degree angle. I do have ailerons but will I have enough yaw
stability? Should I rip off the empennage and try again, or will I be able
to compensate in flight?

Note: I never enter competitions, I just like to go hang with the guys who
do and have an excuse to watch and listen to them.

Thanks.

RE: [RCSE] ICON Towhook Troubles

2004-09-15 Thread Robert Samuels
Jim: One solution is a tape on tow hook. No, this is not a joke. I've
been flying 3 meter planes with the tow hooks just taped on with strapping
tape. I've never had one pull off. I make up a base out of fairly sturdy
shim brass that is curved to fit the bottom of the fuse. It's about 1.5
inches wide and 3 inches long. I make up (bend) the hook out of a common
nail. The head of the nail is silver soldered to the base using high
strength silver solder, not Sta-Brite. The base is lined with double stick
carpet tape and stuck to the bottom of the fuse. Then I use 3 or 4 strips
of 1/2 inch strapping tape to finish the job. Works great.

RE: Fwd: [RCSE] Graphite 2

2004-09-08 Thread Robert Samuels
Nick: I could not install my flap servos as shown in the instructions.
When bent the pushrod would hit the top of the skin and the supplied
clevises were too big and long. Because of the supplied clevis length the
bend was too far back to function. I cut away the TE spar but still did not
get sufficient clearance to work. The main problem is that the screw in
flap horns are too short. They need to be 6.5 mm longer. I cut the top of
the horns off and silver soldered them to a section of 3mm screw from which
I cut off the head. The silver solder I used is not the regular stuff that
will not work. I used 93% silver. Flux used is borax (Boraxo works) I got
my silver solder from a welding shop. It has 70,000 pounds per inch yield
strength. Then I used a section of straight pushrod with Sullivan clevises
which are much smaller. I still had to cut away the TE spar for clearance.
Since I lengthened the flap horn I had to lengthen the servo arm so it now
rides above the surface of the skin. Thus I had to cut a slot in the servo
cover.I think Vladimir just didn't engineer the flap servo installation.
I think he made up something he hoped would work and threw it into the
box.

When I tried to install the pushrods for the V tail I realized that the tail
cone would make this nearly impossible. So I cut the tail cone off and
taped it on after I was done. Glad I did this.

Finally I found that the instructions for installing the aileron horns don't
make any sense. I reshaped the horns so that the holes were over the hinge
line and glued them in at a height that made sense. I could not figure what
the picture showing 6mm height was supposed to show.

Those were my main problems. If you have any questions don't hesitate to
contact me. Or call me. During the week day call my cell phone
314/477-6778.

My many calls to Barry Kennedy for help over a long period got me many
promises but no help whatsoever. He promised to call Vladimir, contact
other builders, etc but never, never gave me any information.

I flew the plane yesterday for the first time. It flys beautifully. It's a
keeper.

Re: [RCSE] Appropriate Wing Incidence?

2004-06-21 Thread Robert Samuels
I think that incidence is the angle of the wing relative to the stab. It is
conventially measured by establishing a datum line, usually parallel to the
boom section that separates the wing from the stab. But this is simply a
convention and is done for ease of measurement. The theoretical concept has
to do only with the relationship of the wing to the stab. Martin Kopplow
was the guy who addressed the question most cogently when I was a novice in
the incidence field.

RE: [RCSE] FW: F3J - 9CAP (butterfly) - 90 degree flaps.

2004-04-19 Thread Robert Samuels
I've, too, had some weird experiences with Futaba. 2 years ago I bought a
9C and tried to set it up with a full house sailplane with V-tail. It would
not work and when I called Hobbico they advised that there was a bug in the
program that would not allow it to work with a V-tail. They traded me for a
8U super that did work. Recently I tried to add differential to my V-tail
per instructions in Don Edberg's book. In addition to some rather strange
travel results it caused my rudder trim to reverse direction. This was
confirmed by Hobbico who had no remedy and said this particular bug was also
in the 9C. They claimed that simply using the V-tail setting caused the
rudder trim to reverse but I did not find that. As for flap travel, I get
full travel but I can't remember if I had to use some trick such as the
OFFSET function. I suggest you get Edbergs book for the 8U. Hobbico said
the programming was the same in the 8U and the 9C that only the interface
was different.

Wondering if someone could help or already had problems on trying to
get full flap servo travel on the 9cap for channel 5.
The plane is a brand new eraser xtreame dbox +tail, futaba 9cap,
futama PCM receiver and hitec 5125 digital servos. Mode is Glid2flp.
Here is the challenge, at least to me :). Before activating all
mixes, I assembled the right wing flap, connected to channel 3 to test
geometry and full deflection. Perfect 90 degrees ...looking ok, time for
the
left flap..same thing, connect on channel 3 to test and 90 degree.
Both flaps tested !!! Ok, easynow time to mount the plane and
start playing with the mixes. Right flap on channel 5, Left flap on channel
6, right aileron on ch1 and left on ch7.
Activating butterfly...here is the problem... can't find a way to
make the servos connected on channel 5 and 6 to have the same travel as
when
they were connected on ch3. Seems like the 9cap limits the total travel on
channel 5 and 6.
Function end point only works at one end of the travel no effects
on the other. On butterfly, tried to set the flap to 100%, but at 60% the
servo is already at max travel...but mechanical, the servo still has a lot
of travel to go.

Tks in advance for those who might take their time to help.

Best Rgds,
Marlon
