Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] END OF MY ROPE! "Can't connect to server..."
I would concur with this. 50% is not good WiFi. My set of five players never drop below about 70% for years now. Definitely you want LMS on a static IP, and hopefully you can just assign a static DHCP IP on your router. But I'd also say that tp-link is not a super high quality aftermarket router. Cheap and cheerful brand, generally decent but not special. I have a draytek wifi access point, just being an access point and it gives me rock solid WiFi with 15+ devices coming and going all the time (including Chromecasts and swathes of android, apple devices), and use a Linux box to run DHCP and routing services (dnsmasq is great). I literally never see issues. My WiFi SBT in the kitchen will stream BBC iPlayer at three higher bitrate literally all day every day without buffering or pausing once. Get rid of the consumer gear and problems tend to go away. -Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk- -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. I have AT Uverse with one of their DSL Modem WiFi Routers (yep, the all in one type that includes 4 enet jacks). I also have a SB Classic 3, a SB Radio, SqueezePlay (software SB) on my Win10 desktop, and I have a RPi that runs my LMS and SqueezeLite. So, four playing "devices" that can become more if I enable Play mode on my Android SB controller app. When I first set all this up with the SB Classic and LMS on a Linux desktop years ago, I used WiFi on the SB Classic with an enet cable to the LMS desktop. But I had odd network behavior, like what you report. When I signed up for Uverse CableTV and the AT guy came to do the install I took the opportunity to explain this odd behavior. He said it's the AT Uverse modem!! For reasons he did not understand, the router software would terminate the DHCP lease for the SB Classic but not renew it, no matter what one tried to do. It wasn't WiFi signal, or anything like that (channel, signal strength, noise). The only solution was to power cycle the router. Gah! That basically resets the entire DHCP lease cycling. Needless to say, as you confirm in your post, that is a right PITA. I went out and bought a 30-foot enet cable and ran it around the room to the SB Classic. Situation improved a lot. When I set up the RPi to be my LMS, I ran a 2nd enet cable for it, not trusting the WiFi DHCP situation. I'm pretty stable with networking now, though occasionally I'll get the pesky "rebuffering" notice for streams and, sometimes, even "local" music on my NAS. But that happens rarely these days. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] END OF MY ROPE! "Can't connect to server..."
Do you have any Chromecast devices on your network? Android phones qualify as chromecast. There's a known issue with Chromecast causing some routers, TP-Link and Netgear both suffer from this, to drop their 2.4Ghz network. The SSID will still show, but devices can't connect. Some router brands handle the problem fine and others tend to fall over in different ways. You may be affected by this issue. https://www.myce.com/news/confirmed-issue-google-cast-causes-temporarily-wifi-drops-around-world-83428/ On your particular issue I would at the very least put your LMS server on a reserved IP and I would set your 2.4Ghz channel to 1, 6, or 11, don't set it to Auto. I've seen problems when the LMS server moves its IP address and/or the router auto changes the 2.4Ghz channel. Hopefully it is something this simple. My squeeze stuff is all wireless and things work very well. I even have my LMS server wireless, I run it on the 5Ghz network and of course all squeeze clients are on the 2.4Ghz network so that the server and clients don't step on each others wireless. It's not LMS because you get same issue with mysqueezebox.com. It is unlikely the squeezebox hardware as you have the exact same issue with all 3. Have you used a wifi sniffer to see if there are lots of other WIFI networks nearby. Perhaps interference of some sort. And are you using either channels 1, 6, or 11. Thanks for the input guys. Router is this - https://www.tp-link.com/us/products/details/cat-9_Archer-C7.html - it's aftermarket, not all-in-one or ISP-supplied. Before that was a Netgear, before that something else. I get a new one every 3-4 yrs to update tech. No static IP's, all dynamic. Each will have it's own IP address on the router management page but maybe it's getting tripped up. But every router has had this problem. The SB1 only support 802.11b and so if it ised in a network with V2 abnd V3 on 802.11g - it may be dragging the network down to slower speeds. see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?42853-Wireless-performance-on-mixed-networks-answers! If you can disable IPv6 stuff if it is not being used - I found some system do IPV6 DNS lookups before IPV4 DNS lookup and so adds delays. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108745 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] END OF MY ROPE! "Can't connect to server..."
definitely sounds like a network problem and not a squeezebox hardware problem (particularly because it is the same even if not using LMS). How do the players and computer get IP addresses? Provided automatically via the router and DHCP? Or have you given anything static IP addresses (bypassing DHCP). If somehow multiple devices were getting the same IP address, this would cause problems (and a router reboot might temporarily fix). How old is router? is it provided by the ISP? Do you have extenders of any kind in your network (if so, it is easy to get IP address overlap if you have more than one router/extender handing out IP addresses at the same time). Describe the detail of your network setup, including any switches, what's wired vs wifi, any extenders, etc. *Home:* VortexBox 4TB (2.4) > LMS 7.9.1 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4) > LMS 7.9.1 > Touch > Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Office:* Win8(64) > LMS 7.9.1 > Squeezelite *Spares:* Transporter, Touch(3), Radio(3), Boom, SB3, CONTROLLER *Controllers:* iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng & Squeezepad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) laptop *Files:* ripping: dbpoweramp > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108745 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] END OF MY ROPE! "Can't connect to server..."
I never, ever hear from people having random connectivity issues when they built their own router and use a dedicated access point as two separate devices, only from those using an all in one router, usually as supplied by some ISP. Do some ping tests, make sure your router's DNS server is any good and is still granting new DHCP leases and actively renewing old ones. -Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk- -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. If you need to reboot your router you should know the point of the issue A router / all in one device doesnt need to reboot unless there is a realy bad setup involved. eg to less ram for the routing table, to much noise in the wlan to list just two of the many reasons a router only could route again after a reboot. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] END OF MY ROPE! "Can't connect to server..."
Hi guys, I've been using squeezeboxes since the early days of V1 SlimStuff. In fact I still have one working. And 4 others from Logitech, V2 & 3. They've always been plagued by stream interruptions stating, "Cannot connect to server," even when not in use, then they'll reconnect. Sometimes it's very quick, sometimes it's hours. Sometimes they freeze completely. All using latest firmware & server software. Have tried previous versions also, same problem. The ONLY thing that helps is re-booting the computer running squeezebox server AND re-booting router, then they perform perfectly for about a week. Only doing one of those things doesn't help. I'm sick of re-booting everything. This happens with multiple players in virtually any format - local server, NAS, Squeezebox.com, everything. Happens using any router & any signal strength (all are good & well over 50% signal on a very fast home network). I'm at the end of my rope. So before switching to the Amazon Echo, which I don't want to do, is there anything I can try to resolve this? After the "sudo installer ..." command, the Control Panel is indeed fired up. At this point the *Start Server* button -doesn't work at all-. You have to close "System Preferences", and then start the server either command-line or by reopening the Control Panel. This time, it works. Thanks Epoch I have since got it working on another distro - LinuxLite is just a lightweight linux distro and ESXi is a VMware virtual machine host. Really dont think that it was a network or VM issue here - they are able to ping right, which means arps (broadcasts) work. The tcpdump also showed bcasts working.. It was just the TCP part that was failing - being received by the host machine but no response from LMS (which looked to be working fine).
