it depends. If you live anywhere in the world, except

can't install sm 2

2009-03-06 Thread wwill
the past 2 alphas of seamonkey have been impossible for me to
install/use. after the install completes it opens the import wizard,
but it doesn't actually open. it's a button on my taskbar with
seemingly no window related. so i kill it. after that, clicking the
seamonkey icon does nothing. i get the hourglass for a second but
that's it. system specs are the usual. xp pro, 2gb rab, butckets of
free space and nvidia video.

Installing Flash on Ubuntu

2009-03-06 Thread opm595
Hi Guys,
Just installed x-shockwave-flash V10 for .deb (Linux Debian Ubuntu 8.04)
from the Adobe site but unfortunately I can't get it (flash) to work in
Seamonkey. I use FF regularly and Flash works fine in that. Therefore,
I'm guessing I need to install some additional .lib+ files or something
to cradle the flash install in SM. If anyone would be kind enough to let
me know of what additional files I need to install that would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

in FF type in about:plugins and look for the flash
files you need. Now, type in about:plugins in SM and
see if they are there. If not, then find the ones for
FF and copy them to the SM plugin directory located in
the SM Program directory. Did that help?

I endorse freepops as well.

I was using the Webmail extensions, but they didn't work for me more
often then they worked. Freepops has restored function for both Hotmail
and Yahoo accounts.

Re: SM 1.1.14 Message Filters

I am in mourning! Apparently I exceeded the number of filters SM
could handle and the file exploded. I got a message that my filter
files were being rebuilt. I see today, that meant... that they
had been wiped out, and I'll have to start over.

To avoid this in the future, can anyone tell me *how many* is too
many... so I don't do this again? There's one newsgroup that is
impossible to read without an abundance of filters. :) bj

well, in one I've got over 1815 filters, and about 2/3 of them
contain more than one filter setting. In another account I've got 4
filters and each one contains over 100 settings, so I doubt that is
your problem.

That sounds like the number of files I had, before. Many within one
filter/group.

Something being rebuilt sounds more of the index files are being
rebuilt. I haven't heard of the filters being rebuilt. What happens

 if you reopen the program.

SM opened fine, and I just had empty filters. I don't think this had
anything to do with the installation of 1.1.14. That was 2 weeks ago.

I've never seen this message before, and I think it said something about
not able to read msgfilter rules.

Close SM and take a look at the filter files in the SM profile. You
should have a file called msgFilterRules.dat for each mail/news
account you have filters set up for. Take a look at the file and see
how big it is. Do you have a back up? Try putting the backup filter
back.

My new msgFilterRules.dat has 1KB [from today's entries] and there is a
rulesbackup.dat file *created when that happened, that has 15KB. Is
that the same file, or is that backup for something else on that date?

How would I put it back if I had a backup? Just change the name of the
backup file and delete the new one? Or copy and paste the backup file
into the newly created file?

Actually, I'm resigned to manually recreating the filters, I just wondered
if there was a known *maximum* that I should watch out for in this version
of SM? :)

Don't have a backup unless SM created one, when I got that message
 it was rebuilding. :(

I'll check out the files, and come back. Thanks... :) bj

I'm sorry to say, backups should be the responsibility of the user,
not the program. If you have a regular backup routine, as we all
should, you really should include your SeaMonkey profile folder. That

would have helped you in this instance. Its a learning experience.

Lee

I didn't expect SM to have a backup, the message led me to believe there
might have been one created in this instance, for some reason. There
was a backup file created on that date, but I'm not sure that's it.

LOL... I did remember yesterday, that I made a backup of my profile a
couple of weeks ago, when I upgraded to 1.1.14, but now I can't find
that safe place where I put it. Some people are just hopeless. :)

In your ./mozilla directory create a subfolder .plugins if you don't
already have one. Then:

$ cd /home/yourusername/.mozilla/plugins

create a symbolic link to the location where you installed 10; example
of mine that is installed in /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin:

$ ln -s /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so

Restart SeaMonkey.

Hint: the Ubuntu repositories are finally starting to become reliable
for flash. Use Synaptic remove whatever you have installed and install
adobe-flashplugin (it's version 10). Or from a terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

Then use the exact 'ln -s' as provided above.

I would give that a try. Besure to do it with SM

I though webmail was too complicated. Too much mucking around needed in
order for it to work.

As well, Freepops works with any installed email client.
