I can't remember just when all these problems started, but has been

1.1.16 or not. Anyway, when trying to access certain secure sites, I
am very often getting the following message:

The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.

connection and DNS server settings.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?
Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

Below this message is a try again box, which sometimes works when I
click on it.

I am also finding browsing to be very slow in general as well, with
rather large pauses in activity noted quite often, even on http sites.
Could this have anything to do with SM, or some setting within it?

Any ideas?

Can you post the URL to the site so the rest of us can see for ourselves?

No, not really, but it is happening with most, if not all, https sites.

News servers that require logging in.

2009-09-12 Thread Ant

Hello.

I do not leave my account names and passwords in SeaMonkey v1.x for
security reasons. I do manually log in with them like on GigaNews.
However, SeaMonkey seems to forget often in the same SeaMonkey session.
I can understand that it will prompt again if I were to exit and
relaunch SeaMonkey, but why does it keep forgetting even after a few
seconds? I do not have this problem with e-mail servers.

Is anyone else having this problem too? Thank you in advance. :)

sites load slowly because of ads

2009-09-12 Thread Jim
Don't know if anyone has discussed this before.

With the increased reliance on web ads for revenue, sites are cramming
more and more ads on their web sites. Most of the news sites I go to
have their ads hosted by webservers other than their own. Sometimes,
some of these sites are slow -- or don't serve up the ads at all (even
our beloved doubleclick sometimes) resulting in the final news page
taking for ever to load.

There was one local news site requiring a completed reload of every ad
for each slide in a slideshow. Even had a Shockwave video loading each
time (and that was of the lower portion of these screen). Now who is
going to scroll down off a slide in the slide show to watch a video?

Sheesh -- what are they thinking?

Where's the beef?

Try using the Adblock Plus extension. If you are still on SeaMonkey
1.1.x, be sure to get the 1.0.1 version; later versions are for Firefox
3.x and SeaMonkey 2.

I have a copy if you want me to send it to you. 1.0.1 is NOT available
from the Adblock Plus site, so I'm not sure where else to get it.

ABP v1.0.2 works fine in SeaMonkey.

archive including v1.0.2. Also, note that some filter subscriptions will

SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 2 Completes New Feature Set

2009-09-12 Thread Robert Kaiser
Less than 8 weeks after the first beta, the SeaMonkey team released
SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 2 today, completing the planned feature set for the
next generation of the successful Internet suite, with a final 2.0
version expected next month.

Building on the great heritage of the Netscape Communicator and Mozilla
Application suites, SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 2 combines a state-of-the-art web
browser based on the same core as Firefox 3.5.3 with a solid email and
newsgroups client and a simple HTML editor, rounding the experience with
web development tools and IRC chat.

In addition to the changes in the first beta release, this version features:
  - tabbed mail, enabling accounts, folders and even single messages to
be opened in tabs inside the Mail Newsgroups window, as well as
enabling the Lightning extension to be installed into SeaMonkey for
calendering functionality.
  - a completely renewed default theme on Mac OS X to better fit with
the look of Leopard and Snow Leopard,
  - reopening of closed browser windows (Undo Close Window),
  - introduction of simpler interfaces for extension developers
(SMILE),
  - and a large number of other, smaller improvements.

The release notes include a detailed list of improvements in comparison
to SeaMonkey 1.1.18, our current stable release.

We welcome any and all discussions on this beta on our newsgroups, or
you can even file a bug if you find one. Be sure to check our known
issues prior to filing bugs.

SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 2 is available for free download on the SeaMonkey
website. Once you have downloaded and installed this release, we'd like
to encourage you to get involved in discussing and reporting problems as
well as further improving the product.

Thanks for testing and helping us to make SeaMonkey even better!

you could add these sites to your host file and direct the request off
to no-man's land. Works fine except for those sites that depend on you
actually seeing the ads. Check it out at:

Noticeable lags when opening up Mail Newsgroups and new browser windows.

2009-09-12 Thread Ant

Hello!

Lately (since earlier today), I noticed my SeaMonkey v1.1.18 seems
laggier/taking longer to finish opening/rendering up Mail Newsgroups
(shows nothing on the right frame at first) and new browser windows
(missing bookmarks in toolbar and blank page at first). It takes about
2-3 seconds long on my Intel 8200 quad-core system in my updated XP Pro.
SP3 box!

I narrowed down this to AdBlock Plus v1.0.2 extension. I did not have
this problem with each separate scenario:
1. A brand new SeaMonkey profile.
2. Removed ABP extension (disabled ABP extension and filters still show
the lags).
3. Unable to reproduce this on my Debian/Linux box. That box doesn't use
IEview (already tried without it in Windows XP Pro. SP3 box).

The only significant changes I recalled earlier was adding XP's files
for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai) and
reboot. I removed them and rebooted, but still have this problem. I
already tried clearing caches, history, compacting e-mails and newsgroup
posts, deleting XUL.mfl file, reinstalling SeaMonkey v1.1.18 over the
old one, etc.

Does anyone know what's up? Thank you in advance. :)
