Keyboard navigation works the same whether the menu bar is visible or
not. the Alt key will still focus the menu bar and all the shortcut keys
still work, ie. Alt-F, Alt-E, Alt-V, Etc.

Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

2016-03-09 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
I just assigned it here in this Thunderbird composition window and it
worked fine here, in Notepad, Wordpad, Word, and just for good measure,
IE, that is when not in browse mode.

Here's what I suggest assuming you want a global assignment.
1. Close all windows until you're sitting on the desktop.
2. Open the Window-Eyes control panel.
3. Control-O and open Default.set.
4. Go to Cursor keys and right arrow to expand it.
5. Arrow down once to Keys and then tab once. make sure it says Global,
backspace, First action, etc. Global is the key word here.

6. Press the letter R once. This will land you on Right arrow.
You can select either Prior character after or Character before as they
do the same thing.

7. Control-S to save the set file.
8. Control-O and reload Explorer.set.
9. Ponder whether it is necessary for all instructions to have ten steps.
10. Press Escape to touch back down on planet desktop and celebrate.

Hth,
Tom

It has the advantage that you don't have to use one key to get the

arrow right. I can live with the right arrow reading the character
landed on, but I shouldn't have to as it wasn't necessary till WE9 came
along. I have no idea why my installation would be different from three

Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

2016-03-09 Thread Dave Basden via Talk
I didn't add a new key, I just changed the existing right arrow
definition to read prior character after the right arrow command was
executed. At least I think that's what I was doing as the labels on
the various definitions have been changed somewhat.

At 03:47 PM 3/9/2016, you wrote:

does it do this with every program you run?
i duplicated the problem. but this only applies to the program you
are running.
go to the cursor/keys to the left arrow. now click on show program.
then go back to the list of keys. if the left arrow key is there
and defined undefine it.
when i did add the left arrow to the list and set it to character
before and saved the set file it did exactly what you get. even
though if you go back to the left arrow in the global menu list it
will still show it is set to character after. the keys in the
program list will over write what it says it is set to in the global menu.

but this would only apply to the program you are running.
so i would check each program that is affected and check the
programmed keys list.

Hi GW Staff and List

I've been complaining about the definitions for cursor control keys
since WE9.0 came out and they are still not correct. Up through
Version 8 I could define the right arrow key to read the character
before the character the right arrow moves to.I've tried it with the
various options at the top of the list and I've tried using an
"execute hot key" with the definition to read the character just
left. It doesn't work. What's more, once I've done that I can't
return to the default definition. I had to restore the default and
redefine everything today just to get back to reading the character
landed on when I press right arrow. I suggest Doug and the other
programmers look at Version 8 and see how it works and then try it
with version 9.

Unhappy, but still devoted to Window-Eyes.

Control alt f WE9.4 goes silent, crashes keyboard, and crashes explorer in Thunderbird, I.E11, and Elite

2016-03-09 Thread Manny via Talk

Hi to all,
WE9.4 goes silent, crashes keyboard and sometimes mouse, crashes
explorer when pressing control alt f in I.E. 11, Thunderbird, and Elite..

I have been able to reboot computer by doing the following:
1 unplugging keyboard and mouse and and reattaching to usb port
2 restarting explorer.exe in task manager
3 closing all windows that are still responding
4 restarting the computer.
Houston we have a problem!

Stay well,

Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

2016-03-09 Thread net bat via Talk

does it do this with every program you run?
i duplicated the problem. but this only applies to the program you are running.
go to the cursor/keys to the left arrow. now click on show program. then go
back to the list of keys. if the left arrow key is there and defined undefine
it.
when i did add the left arrow to the list and set it to character before and
saved the set file it did exactly what you get. even though if you go back to
the left arrow in the global menu list it will still show it is set to
character after. the keys in the program list will over write what it says it
is set to in the global menu.

but this would only apply to the program you are running.
so i would check each program that is affected and check the programmed keys
list.

2016-03-09 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

Usually, when an update to WindowEyes comes out, there is a rash of complaints
from folks who are trying to get the update as soon as possible. As one of the
AI Squared staff pointed out, the server can get overloaded and things might
work erratically. After the first day, the problems usually calm down.

So, a good rule of thumb is, unless you have an urgent need for the latest
update, just give it a day or so, and things will probably work better. And,
that sounds like just how things went for you.

Re: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

2016-03-09 Thread Dave Basden via Talk

Hi Doug,

That's three of you who can't find the problem, which makes me think
it must either be me or my Windows 7 Pro installation. Two of you
are using Windows 10, but I wouldn't expect that to make a
difference. I also don't understand why, once I have made a change
in the cursor key definition, I can't get back to the default
directly. Could an app be interfering? Do you have any other ideas
for what I could be doing wrong or what might be wrong with my installation?

Dave

Dave,

I am also not having a problem. Setting the right arrow to "character
before" causes it to speak the character left instead of the character
going to. Also, I went back in and had no problem changing my right
arrow back to "character after" which is our default. Meaning I did not
have to reload the factory sets. So Dave, I didn't have to go back to
8, my 9.4 works fine (smile). Either I'm not understanding the problem,
or steps are being left out or maybe you are not setting up the keys
properly.

Doug

Why would you need NVDA to install a new version of Window-eyes? It
should talk you through the entire instal process, both while upgrading,
and afterwords when the system reboots and installs all the default
apps. you shouldn't need another screenreader unless your system is set
up differently.

Alt-D to go to the address bar wherein the full path will be highlighted.
Control-C to Copy it to the clipboard.

I solved this a long time ago. Try going into the Window-Eyes control

turning off everything other than read first 24 lines or entire page.
Toggle all the changes from global to program scope so you don't
change them in your browser or CHM help files. Save the set file.

This is because the automatic reading starts, then the new page
information fires, and this causes automatic reading to restart. You
can get the number of links, headings, etc. with the Speak Summary hot
key: Control-Shift-S.

This actually started much earlier and simply continues in 9.4

If you pay attention some emails repeat and some do not. I thought it
was related to html vs. plain text but I cannot easily confirm this.

WE repeats only the first word or sentence with a peruid and then reads
the rest of the message correctly.

have to reload the factory sets. So Dave, I didn't have to go back to
8, my 9.4 works fine (smile). Either I'm not understanding the problem,
or steps are being left out or maybe you are not setting up the keys
properly.

I suggest Doug and the other

with version 9.

Why would you need NVDA to install a new version of Window-eyes? It
should talk you through the entire instal process, both while upgrading,

Re: set files appear to be gone what to do?

2016-03-09 Thread net bat via Talk

it sounds like the path to the set files have changed.
a few months ago when i opened the settings there were no set files in the
list. the file path changed for some reason.

i know i am not explaining right but i will try.
when you open settings shift tab to get to the list of folders.
you have to right arrow to open each folder.
if the first folder is not your account folder then the path changed.
the path should be your account\app data\roaming\gwmicro\wineyes\users\default
then the set files should show.

I would be hesitant about basing your entire opinion on the success of this
version on the posts of a troubleshooting list. Remember that you're
subscribed to a discussion list where people report issues they're having
with the software. Rarely do you hear success stories through this kind of
medium. I can tell you that the number of people having issues due to
legitimate problems in the Window-Eyes installation itself are vastly
outnumbered by those having success. That's not to minimize the problems
they're having, mind you. But rather to point out that things are, by the
numbers, going very well for Window-Eyes 9.4.

Thanks,

Aaron

Well hi folks: I've been hearing a lot of discussion concerning the new
update
for Window-Eyes, And that there are a lot of bugs at dealing with
installation
of the software updates, and possibly others. I am wondering if this is
the
same as others where you have to upload each one or install each one

as they come out or whether you can skip one and go to the next one. Could
someone please let me know, as I have not as yet downloaded Window-Eyes

Thanks much!

control alt f causing WE9.3 and WE9.4 to go silent

2016-03-09 Thread Manny via Talk

Hi,

WE9.4 is still going silent when pressing control alt f in the Elite
program.
The first time the control alt w will bring speech back, but using
control alt f again, the control alt w will not work, and restart did
not give me an error report.
Is this another example where WE9.4 is queering the Elite for something
and the Elite is not responding?
The same silence was happening in I.E. 11 when using control alt
f, but now WE9.4 is working fine.

Many thanks,
Manny

RE: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

2016-03-09 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
Dave,

I just tried this in NotePad and it worked fine. The RIGHT ARROW spoke the
character I just left instead of the character that the cursor was on.
Which application are you using when you try this?

Subject: Key Definitions for Cursor Keys Still Messed Up

Re: window-eyes 9.4 corrupt signature and app errors

2016-03-09 Thread Jeff Weiss via Talk

The corrupt signature problem is fixed.
Thanks, Aaron

Now I still have a problem with the app Script Manager.
Here is help from the app and my conclusions:
Script Manager version 1.5
by Jamal Mazrui

Three hotkeys go directly to script-related dialogs of Window-Eyes:
Control-F10 for Add or Remove Apps,
(this still works)
Control-Shift-F10 for App Manager,
(this does not work)
and Windows-F10 for Package Manager.
(this does not work)
If the dialog is already open but not the active window, it is activated.

note:
For the two hotkeys that no longer work, I hear
"cannot find Window-eyes control panel"
This tells me that the hotkeys are working, but something has changed about
how an app would access the script manager dialog and the package manager
dialog.

This still worked with Window-eyes 9.3.1, so I know the problem started with
we9.4.

Can you check into this further please?
thanks
Jeff Weiss

I downloaded we9.4 from the update page with internet explorer.
The download worked, but IE said that the signature was corrupted.
I installed Window-eyes anyway and it works; however, when I use Jamal’s
Script Manager app, press the hotkey control-shift-f10, instead of opening
the app manager menu like it always has before, the app reports “can’t
find

Window-Eyes control panel:”.
What is up with that? Could this be related to a corrupt signature in the
WE94

download?

I would really like to hear from the AI Squared staff on this!\ Thanks

Re: 9.4 Upgrade

2016-03-09 Thread Chris Skarstad via Talk
Why would you need NVDA to install a new version of Window-eyes? It
should talk you through the entire instal process, both while upgrading,
and afterwords when the system reboots and installs all the default
apps. you shouldn't need another screenreader unless your system is set
up differently.

RE: Installer broken for 9.4.0

2016-03-09 Thread Aaron Smith via Talk
I would be hesitant about basing your entire opinion on the success of this
version on the posts of a troubleshooting list. Remember that you're
subscribed to a discussion list where people report issues they're having with
the software. Rarely do you hear success stories through this kind of medium. I
can tell you that the number of people having issues due to legitimate problems
in the Window-Eyes installation itself are vastly outnumbered by those having
success. That's not to minimize the problems they're having, mind you. But
rather to point out that things are, by the numbers, going very well for
Window-Eyes 9.4.

Thanks,

Aaron

Hi Tom,

I made sure everything was set to program and turned everything off
except for speak first 24 lines. I don't hear the number of things now,
but I do still hear the first line repeated in Thunderbird. I cleared
the settings for both of the new page categories. Do you have any more

9.4 Upgrade

2016-03-09 Thread Danny via Talk
Well I got the upgrade done thanks to NVDA. I did the upgrade when
prompted after a shutdown and startup and once the download reached 100 percent
and just kept repeating that I pressed enter which was on the uac yes button
then was able to bring up NVDA and have speech for the remainder of the
upgrade. After the restart all seems to be working well.

set files appear to be gone what to do?

2016-03-09 Thread crw9599 via Talk
Hello. I did do the upgrade yesterday, thought that everything was
working, but when I went in to the factory settings of window eyes,
noticed that all of the set files are gone when I went in to the chrome
set file area for example, I did tab around to the second edit box heard
nothing, but when I went to install the set file the dialog came up it
mentioned set files all ready exist do you want to replace the set
files, so I said yes thinking that would fix things, so what should I
do? I am running windows7 home premium on a hp small form factor dc 5850
machine. Any help would be great. Thank you.

RE: thunderbird and repeting what it has already read A second time

2016-03-09 Thread via Talk
Hey, Carol. I haven't messed with T-bird, but maybe what you're hearing is
the title bar of the window being spoken, or, maybe WE is seeing the message
window as a message window it must speak or a dialog. Try changing one or
more of the settings in the verbosity> common> activated properties page.

hth,
Lou N.

Hi Tom,

I made sure everything was set to program and turned everything off
except for speak first 24 lines. I don't hear the number of things now,
but I do still hear the first line repeated in Thunderbird. I cleared
the settings for both of the new page categories. Do you have any more

window-eyes 9.4 corrupt signature and app errors

I downloaded we9.4 from the update page with internet explorer.
The download worked, but IE said that the signature was corrupted.
I installed Window-eyes anyway and it works; however, when I use Jamal’s Script
Manager app, press the hotkey control-shift-f10, instead of opening the app
manager menu like it always has before, the app reports “can’t find Window-Eyes

What is up with that? Could this be related to a corrupt signature in the WE94

Sorry. I can't think of anything else off hand. And I have no idea what
Dennis is talking about below. Care to enlighten us, Dennis? Did you
mean blank lines perhaps? I did have that off and turned it on. And it
did speak blank at the start of every message. But there was no repeating.

If you pay attention some emails repeat and some do not. I thought
it was related to html vs. plain text but I cannot easily confirm this.

WE repeats only the first word or sentence with a peruid and then
reads the rest of the message correctly.

If you are asking about the WE update, mine is in
C:\Users\Carol\AppData\Local\Temp.

You should be able to look in your own user directory and search for it
if you have show hidden files and folders turned on, or when in your own
user folder, press windows-R and type in %appdata%.
This will open the appdata folder and then you can find local and press
enter and then temp and press enter. When on the temp folder name, I
created a shortcut to my desktop because I use it enough that I don't
like having to go through all of these steps. .

Re: Location of Update on Win 7

2016-03-09 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
If you are asking about the WE update, mine is in
C:\Users\Carol\AppData\Local\Temp.

You should be able to look in your own user directory and search for it
if you have show hidden files and folders turned on, or when in your own
user folder, press windows-R and type in %appdata%.
This will open the appdata folder and then you can find local and press
enter and then temp and press enter. When on the temp folder name, I
created a shortcut to my desktop because I use it enough that I don't
like having to go through all of these steps. .

If you didn't set a default download-to location the best way to find it is
by using the search box. Type the name of the file and it should provide

I think the word is supposed to be period. I did a double take when I heard
the word as well. I had to find it and arrow through it. The context of the

Hi Tom,

I made sure everything was set to program and turned everything off
except for speak first 24 lines. I don't hear the number of things now,
but I do still hear the first line repeated in Thunderbird. I cleared
the settings for both of the new page categories. Do you have any more
suggestions?

This is because the automatic reading starts, then the new page

Also, I notice the upgrade package name no longer includes the version
number.
It is simply named: WindowEyesSetup.exe.

Fortunately, the mouse keys still work, and I can hit alt+left arrow to
get back to the previous page.
Is this just my experience, or anyone else's?

That is correct. The filenames can be different because of various reasons,
most notably how the file is obtained. But the underlying, installed bits
are identical.

I don't think these were related. I got the upgrade popup from AISquared and
all went as it should.

Hi: I booted up and after typing in my windows pwd I heard the windoweyes
chimes and then got a popup message from my "\HardDisk" asking whether to
  allow updates to the disk.
It did not say it was from AI Squared nor WindowEyes but from what sounded
like the drive manufacturer or something.
Since I just closed this request and then immediately got the AI Squared
PopUp to download and install the update I have to assume they were related.
Since I did not elect to allow updates from an unknown source I just closed
the AI Squared PopUp since the install would have failed if related.
Note that if related to your install notification and others didn't get this
UAC request due to system settings their update would likely fail if
required by AI Squareds Installer processes.
Others have said that your dialog is not accessible, is your dialog
accessible so I wont have to go find sighted help to do the install?
Should I run a clean disk and will that clear the temp files or folders you
say may cause problems or is there another temp folder involved and why
don't you download the executable to the standard Windows Download folder
  like everyone else?
I really don't like a unrequested notification from UAC to modify my
computer during boot up and from the hard disk at that.
There should be no impact to my computer unless I click on something to
indicate I want to have my computer modified like a update menu item under
  the help menu.
  So:
Will clicking through the unknown modifications to my computer requested
from my hard drive cause me expensive problems?
Will your installer be completely accessible and active during the download
  and install process?
Exactly what do I need to do to clear the temp files or whatever you are
talking about, run a clean disk or manually delete something and, if so,
  what?
This is my production machine and breaking it would be expensive to fix me
  thinks.

Yes, my version reads the first complete line. If there is one or two
words, i.e. Hi or Dear Group, it is not so bad. However, by reading 3/4
of the message in one or two lines, it makes listening more difficult.
I have been getting to the point of pressing the up arrow as soon as the
email loads and reading line by line.

If you pay attention some emails repeat and some do not. I thought it

WE repeats only the first word or sentence with a peruid and then
reads the rest of the message correctly.

Re: Get Window-Eyes 9.4 for the best Windows Experience

2016-03-09 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi:

I noticed Smart Screen complains with the WindowEyesForOffice file for
WE 9.4. It says something about the signature being invalid. Also
noticed this with the evaluation version of WE 9.4.

Do you folks have to alert Microsoft every time you release an update
so they don't think the files are malware?

I know that, at some point, Smart Screen has allowed the earlier WE
setup files to be downloaded without complaint. Also, in Windows 8
and later, Smart Screen runs at the desktop level without Internet
Explorer, further exaserbating the problems.
