speech problem and desktop shortcut problem
Dear List I have an old and a new windows ten computer. The new computer has the problems. First, when I am typing on the keyboard, the key echo is good, but, if I stop for about ten seconds, the first character I type is partially cut off at the beginning of the character. For example, it might say eriod instead of period. What can I try to correct this? The second quirk is that if I make a shortcut to a certain website, the arrow keys do not work, just the tab. Other websites work fine. If I type the address in the address bar instead of getting to it with the desktop shortcut, it works fine. Just making a desktop shortcut on that one website causes the arrows not to work. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks. I apologize for sending a private message to the list; however, addresses on this list are hidden, so I didn't have Rod's address to which I could send a private message. Rod, as you are into scripting, I wonder whether you have ever considered scripting a wonderful and very comprehensive file renamer called "Bulk rename utility" available from http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk . It talks reasonably well with Window-eyes, but it is rather confusing if one wishes to use its more exotic renaming functions. If at all interested, please give it a look and tell me what you think. Re: Alternative Interface?
A major issue for multiple interfaces for the same software package in addition to the initial development time is the cost of additional support. If a bug is found, or a new feature is desired, the company potentially have to make two changes instead of one. A change to the version for the sighted user and a change to the alternative for the vision-impaired. It is really better to build in accessibility from the start and have accessible interfaces on,ly. My experience with software for music and audio leads me to believe the issue is a lack of imagination. The developer, being sighted, can picture how she wants the set of “controls” to behave, so she designs a graphical model of the interface and has code behind it to perform various functions as that interface is manipulated with the mouse or other means. There is no conception of the interface other than a visual one. It would be interesting to hear what successful blind musicians, composers, engineers and producers do to cope with all of this. Re: Save As Type Not Showing up in Window-Eyes
I experienced this yesterday on my wife's computer, running Windows 7 64-bit, while Outlook 2007 and Word 2007 were both running. I was trying to save the Word file in a different format. I think that in that instance Outlook was obscuring part of Word's Save-As dialog box; closing Outlook solved the problem. Sometimes it's very hard to diagnose these problems if something opens on the screen and Window-Eyes cannot read it and you can't alt-Tab into it to see that it is running. This could happen with, for instance, the Dell "support" program that I have on my recent Dell desktop. I put Support in quotes because I can't read much of its output beyond its title bar, as I remember. Sometimes it's helpful to get someone over to look at your monitor and see if everything is squashed to one side or something that you don't expect. Last month I bought a new Dell desktop computer. Since Window-Eyes was installed on this machine I cannot see the SaveAs Type in the SaveAs Dialog Box for most applications. It is there, I can see it with the mouse pointer and I can use the arrow keys to change the file type. NVDA can see it. I have found it is not shown in the following programs: Goldwave, Adobe Reader, Word 2010, Excel 2010 and Notepad. I use Becky! as my e-mail client, and I can see the SaveAs File Type when saving an e-mail message. If I press I land in the File Name, as expected. If I then press to the SaveAs Type combobox nothing speaks and nothing shows up on the braille display. I checked my husband's machine. He also has Window-eyes 9.5.3.0. The SaveAS Type box shows up as a combobox. I tried reclassing the window as a combobox on my machine but, although it says it is a combobox and it is SaveAs Type, it does not actually show the different file types. My husband's machine is an Acer Aspire running Windows 7 Home premium, mine is running Windows 7 Professional. They are both 64-bit versions. I contacted AI Squared who were unable to replicate this problem, although I do know someone who has the same issue. AI Squared advised me to uninstall Window-Eyes using the WE Emergency Remove Tool and install it using a version of the installation they sent to me. It has made no difference. comparing wineyes and NVDA
Hello, can someone tell me what some of the main features in wineyes are that NVDA does not have? For example, does NVDA have an invisible cursor? Can you use the mouse pointer to read through a document? Also, is there a way to get a list of NVDA hotkeys without installing the program? All help is appreciated. Google's great for this. For example in a google search put in nvda dec access and results will be there. I wonder if Google would have a result explaining how Dec Access for NVDA relates in any way to Window-Eyes. RE: Alternative Interface?
Hi Dave, I feel your pain. These days, the older I get, the more blind I feel. Using a computer was fun in the 1990's and early 2000's, but as time went on, things became more and more inaccessible. And I don't mean only for computers. Purchasing a new stove or refrigerator these days that is fully usable for blind people is difficult. Also, I have noticed that when you tell someone on the phone that you are blind, these days they assume that you mean legally blind, not totally blind. I think that part of the problem is that the number of totally blind people is steadily shrinking. Other thoughts, anyone? Paulette -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+paulette=evickery@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Dave via Talk Sent: Sunday, January 15, 2017 5:36 PM To: A I Squared Support Subject: Alternative Interface? When it comes to making items accessible. When it comes to software, for years, I have wondered why a Software Company could not have two interfaces, one for the Sighted world, and one for the blind, that use screen readers. And the choosing of which interface to use can be done the first time the software runs, or at any time after. I am a Musician that plays guitar and some Keyboard. As Sonar became more and more complex, it seemed as if the accessibility shrank and shrank until the last three or four editions are almost useless to someone using a screen reader. JAWS seems to be a bit further ahead, when it comes to Scripts but even then, I don't know if they have done anything for reading any edition of Sonar past 8.X. There are software based Synthesizers, that are quite powerful that are for the most part off limits to someone using a screen reader. Addictive Drums is a software package that simulates Drums, all kinds of drums. Everything from the old time drum kits from the 1920's to the ultra modern Hip-Hop electronic drums sounds. Loads of drum styles, and I start Drooling when I think of what I could do to improve the sound of my recordings, if only I had access to this Addictive Drum software package. But, last I checked, it isn't a package that is all that accessible. Same goes for some software based Guitar Pedal packages. Loads of guitar effects, all customizable to my own tastes and it is all off limits. Screen reader can't read the screens. The one I wanted is absolutely silent. And for those you who think I am whining, think again. Please don't insult me because I point out an area that I wish was available to me and others. I wondered if it would be possible to have a second main screen, this one friendly to screen readers etc. How much would it cost the Company to add such a screen? Don't know. Don't know how much effort it would take to make such a screen. I dream of such screens for all of the software that I find less than friendly to screen reader usage. What if it took another week or two of development, or even another month of development time. Would you pay another $100 extra to have such a accessible screen? I know I would. Companies that make an attempt to make their software Screen Reader Friendly, seem to make the attempt to making their main screens accessible. have no idea if they have ever considered making an alternative screen for their programs use by the Blind. Today when pricing is so competitive, and Companies are striving to be the cheapest, even if it is by a Dollar or two under their competitors product, I don't know how willing some company would be to add a Screen Reader friendly interface, if doing that will cause their products price to rise by $100. RE: windows 10 cmd command
Hi Joseph and Jim, Actually, I just figured out how to fix this. If you open the command shell, and press Alt-spacebar, you'll activate the system menu for the command shell window. If you arrow down to Properties, and press Enter, you'll be in a multi-tab dialog, and you'll be in the first tab, called Options. Simply tab to the check box named Use legacy console, check it, tab to Ok and press Enter. As the check box label states, you will need to restart the command shell window for the changes to take effect, but, once reopened, the repeating of screen content no longer occurs. RE: Alternative Interface?
Well, Rick, why should a manufacturer or an app developer be held to any standard, whether high or low, with respect to accessibility when the government itself does not honor the law it has crafted? Can you explain to me why, despite the ADA, the U.S. dollar bill remains largely inaccessible to the blind? Why do you and I need to use some useless extra gadget in order to READ the dollar bill when other sighted folks don't have to do the same? It's so easy to blame or point accusing fingers at app developers and manufacturers; let's not be complacent, our government is equally guilty when it comes to accessibility issues. Do our court provide materials in an accessible format even when requested? Has IRS ever sent you information in an accessible format such as Braille or audio at your request? If you hold a travel passport, is your passport number ever printed in both Braille and print? I can go on citing examples of government stupidity, but I'm sure you already get the point. If government obeys the laws it makes, other entities will do their best possible to stay compliant. I can cite other examples, but I'll wait till someone attempts to answer the questions raised herein. Here's a link describing how to set up the reading of PDFs for best accessibility: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-in-browser.html hth, Rod -Original Message- From: Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. RE: Alternative Interface?
Hi Dave: Amps and effects peddles are indeed a problem for blind people but then so are washing machines, stoves and just about everything flat panel or touch screen these days unless regulated by government or where some type of audio I/O helps sighted folks. There are usually some not too expensive work-arounds that can be implemented by the companies but why should they if it doesn't increase their bottom line - I wouldn't and don't. I don't care if you or any other blind person can use my products, you are too small, lower income a group to be of concern to me compared to the massive sighted community market. Sure, I feel sorry for you but it is your job to get government to setup and enforce regulations on all of us vendors or I will not provide one minute of work twoard accessibility if my competition doesn't have to do it. You can find a sighted person to help you setup and adjust your equipment during gigs or find a third party company who will help develop some hardware to make the equipment you want to use accessible - that is what charaties are for and why they don't have to pay taxes. Perhaps you can go to some church and beg for help. God Bless and, truly, good luck: A Good Capitalist Man ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared.
