RE: sluggish boot
Hi Mike. I'm also encountering slower startups, but I don't think it's a screen issue. I think it's just the nature of the beast, and as the OS becomes more and more complicated, the longer it takes to get up and running. Thankfully, I haven't noticed any worse sluggishness once the system is running than before. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Missing Hot Keys
Hi. Sounds like you might have turned on the JAWS layout. I say this because INSERT+S is the screen speak key, where it will say "say all". I don't remember how to set this back to Window-Eyes keys. Also, INSERT+T is the JAWS key to say the title bar. Hope this helps. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Hot key for starting JAWS?
Hi. I'm assuming you're using Windows 10. Here's what to do. Go to the desktop and get focus on the JAWS icon. Once you've done that, press ALT+ENTER to activate the properties. Now, press TAB to get to the key option. For my PC I have CTRL+ALT+J for JAWS, so I just hit J. The above hot key is created. Now press ENTER. On my Windows 10 PC I get a message that you need something like administer level or something like that. Just TAB to Continue, or an option like that and press ENTER. Now, I don't know if the properties dialogue is closed or not, but if it isn't, press TAB until you get to OK and press ENTER. That's all there is to it. Here's one annoying thing about updating JAWS. Whenever you update it, the hot key is gone, so you need to do the above steps to get it back again. As someone said, "That's all I have to say about that." Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: nfl game pass
Hi. I can't speak for Tunein on a PC, but the iPhone version has regular season and playoff NFL games archived. I checked for the Dallas game from last week, but it wasn't archived, at least not yet. I like Tunein on my iPhone, because for $10 per month I get all the major pro sports in the U.S., and MLB games are archived, and I think this is true for other pro sports. Just recently I listened to last year's Dallas Green Bay playoff game. As I said, I don't know how Tunein works on a PC. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Jaws-key, can it be remapped?
Hi. Here's how to change the JAWS key to the CAPS LOCK key. Hit INSERT+J. In your setup the INSERT key is the JAWS key. Go to the options menu. If you have JAWS running in the system tray, you'll land on this menu choice. This is how I run JAWS. I'm not sure what JAWS looks like if not run from the system tray, but you want to get into the options menu. Hit ENTER on that choice. Now you'll be in the options menu. Go to BASICS and press ENTER. Now you'll be in a dialogue. TAB around until you hear KEYBOARD LAYOUT. My guess is you have it set to desktop. Change it to laptop. Finally, TAB to apply if it's available, hit ENTER on it, then hit ENTER on OK. That's all there is to it. If you have other questions, speak up. I don't know all the JAWS commands, but I do know some basic ones, and I can search through the JAWS info to help. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Window-eyes commands using Jaws
Hi Brenda. I'll answer how you change what the mouse can read with JAWS. In JAWS, you're restricting what the mouse, or JAWS cursor in JAWS lingo does. My instructions deal with using the numeric keypad. First, get the JAWS cursor focus by hitting the numeric dash key, which is the upper right key on the numeric keypad. Next, hit JAWS+R to change the restriction of the JAWS cursor. The JAWS cursor is the INSERT key on the numpad. Hope you find this helpful. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Going Backward in Accessibility?
Hi all. I agree with Chris to a point. We have more accessible programs than in the past, however, things could be better. I approach things with the saying, if you want to attract flies, it's better to use honey than vinegar. We need to convince manufacturers of software and other electronic devices to add features that not only the blind could use, but other people as well. I have three examples of this thinking. I remember when the Kurzweil Reading Machine first came out. It was amazing that a machine in the mid 70's could take print from a book and convert it to speech. The speech wasn't the best, But it was useable, and for the nice little cost of $50,000 you could get one. As the years went by the KRM went down in price, and, last I heard, when it was around you could get one for around $6,000. Now, go ahead a few years to the PC. Someone thought that, rather than storing papers in files, they could be scanned as images into a PC and be read that way. Then someone had a thought. Maybe this person saw a KRM, and he or she thought, "Wouldn't it be neat to convert those images into text files which could be edited?" and, BANG! OCR came to a PC. In late 1990 or early 1991 I got OmniPage for my PC, and I was able to do OCR on the PC. I had better vision than now, but I think I was able to use the software with little effort. Then, a few years later, assistive technology comp anies like Kurzweil came out with OCR solutions for the blind. Kurzweil isn't cheap, but for a little over $1,000 you can get it. Another great example of what I'm talking about is the iPhone. In this case, Apple went the opposite way than OCR. They put VoiceOver on the phone specificly for the blind, and those of us who used the phone thought that it was nice to have speech out of the box, and not costing anything for it. Next, Siri came along, and both sighted and blind found it nice to ask Siri questions and get a response from the iPhone. Now, I see this option as a bonus, especially when Hey Siri is on, which has the phone listening for you to say "Hey Siri" and the phone then waits for your question. This is specificly nice for drivers of vehicles who shouldn't look at the iPhone when driving in traffic at a high rate of speed. Finally, I'd like to report on another device that has become more accessible, and that's TV. This includes the Apple TV, and other streaming content. Some cable providers have implemented speech to access their content. In fact, this week I got a laptop from Spectrum. Some of you out there might say this isn't a good solution, but I'll point out a few things about it. First, you can stream live content to the laptop, and there are quite a few channels available. Second, there's a guide that you can access to learn what channel is shown, what's currently on the channel, and what's coming up. Finally, the laptop has a SAP option that you can activate, and, if the station has SAP available you can turn it on. I haven't found a show with DVS, but one is on Fox tonight, and I'll tune into it to see if it is described. Also, if you should decide to go the laptop route, don't believe that you have to use the mouse pad to access things. The software works perfectly well wi th a keyboard. As I said, this option may not work for some, but, since I'm the only one in the apartment it works well for me. My point for this long message is that things aren't perfect, but they could definitely be worse. When I talk to manufacturers about accessibility, when possible, I mention how a feature would benefit both the blind and sighted. Siri is such a thing, and, so long as companies remember to give verbal or tactile feedback, we'll have accessible items. That's all I can think of to write. For those of you frustrated with what you're using, I can sympathize, and hope you get a working solution that you're satisfied with. If not, consider what I've said. Tell companies how it would benefit them to make something accessible, and if possible, show them how not just the blind, but everybody could benefit by this improvement. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: Need Help getting Speech back
Hi Dave. Have you tried switching to different speech synthesizers? The only other thing I can think of is the volume of your synthesizer is low. Window-Eyes controls the speech volume independent of the sound card, at least that's my experience. If none of this works, I'd get hold of tech support. You could uninstall and reinstall Window-Eyes, but if I did this, I'd use the emergency remove tool to get rid of everything WE related. Good luck. RE: Reminiscing about old Screen Readers and Synthesizers
Hi. I know I'm late in this thread, but I'd like to add my own experience with screen readers. My first computer with speech was an Apple II E with the Echo II board and software from Street Electronics. I got that for my graduation from high school. I remember the speech package costing $150, which was a steal in 1984. It didn't read everything, but it did all right for what I used it for. I got my first PC in October of 1986. I didn't have speech for it for two years, so I had to use the little vision that I had to use it. In the fall of 1988, I got a speech package that I haven't heard anybody mention. It was the Speaqualizer from APH. What made this package unique was it didn't rely on a program loaded from the PC's disk drive. It was totally hardware based. It had a board that was placed in the PC, and a box that controlled it was connected to the board. What was really nice about this synthesizer was it worked right when you turned on the PC. In 1990 I got an 80/386, and I updated the Speaqualizer to work with this PC. Since it wasn't software based and worked before the PC booted, I was able to access and change settings in the BIOS. The speech wasn't the best, but it served me well for ten years. Now I use software speech, so I can't delve into the system before it's up and running. Just thought I'd share my experiences. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. RE: searching for files in Windows 10
Hi. Here's what I do to search for files and folders in Windows 10. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where the file or subfolder is. If you don't know, you can go to a folder above where you want to do your search. The method I do looks in subfolders. Press CTRL+F and you'll be placed in a search edit area. Type all or part of the file or folder you're looking for. As an example, I use this feature to look for mp3 files. If, for example, I want to find Call me by Go West, I can simply type West call And any files or folders with west and call in their titles will be displayed in the list of results. To get to the list of results, hit TAB two or three times to get there. That's all there is to it. Have a blessed day and don't work too hard. Screen readers and monopolies.
Hi. I'll be watching what happens with this new merger with interest. I have two main things to mention. First, congrats to all who kept this quiet. Apple needs to learn from this news. Second, and my main topic, is the thought that this new company is a monopoly. It's not. It doesn't stop other companies like NVDA from continuing to make a good screen reader. Sure, the big companies will probably combine their resourses, but it's not a monopoly. If you want to talk about a true monopoly, why don't we mention Apple? What other screen access software besides VoiceOver is available for their devices? Just my thoughts. I'm looking at this in a positive mode. I do have my concerns, but I'm not upset...yet. What advantage will an accessible Edge browser be over Internet Explorer?
Hi. The subject says it all. I'm a happy user of IE, but there may be some things that Edge will do that it can't. The only thing Edge will have over IE is it will be more current. The discussion of different browsers reminds me of 20 years ago. Back then, the browser of choice was Netscape. I was happy using that, then IE came along. It took screen readers a while to work with the new browser, but they eventually did. I figure that Edge will be similar. Just some thoughts and a question to ponder. RE: Update Warning
Hi. I was one of those who went from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the day it was released, but I had some issues with this PC. Elloquence would get stuck on a phoneme, and the only way to fix it was to turn the PC off and back on again. Even worse, the PC would randomly reboot itself. I ended up sending it to the Lenovo hospital where they replaced the hard drive. Thankfully the computer was still under warranty, so I didn't have to pay for the repair. I then decided to give Windows 10 another try, but the same thing with speech getting stuck happened again. I called up Microsoft Accessibility and reverted to Windows 8.1. I was a happy user of 8.1, until a couple of weeks ago when my speech did what it did in 10. I discovered that the problem was in the USB hub that I had my external sound card and wireless keyboard connected to. I then decided to once again try Windows 10, and, knock on the wooden computer table, I've had no problems. I upgraded on February 13, so it's be en a little less than two weeks ago. I'm sharing this to let those who think it's important to update to the latest OS that there are circumstances where this may not be the best thing to do. Believe it or not, I have a PC that will be fifteen years old in October of this year, and it has XP on it. I haven't had a single problem with that old desktop PC, and it has been on constantly for most of its life. I have a ham radio program on it which allows other ham radio operators the ability to connect to a radio that I have hooked to the PC so that they can talk to hams in the Lexington, Kentucky area. Sometimes the latest and greatest thing isn't necessary. Don't get me wrong, I really like Windows 10, and I don't regret upgrading to it on my Lenovo laptop. Just realize that not everybody has different levels of hardware that may limit them to a certain OS. Just something to consider. Have a blessed day, and don't work too hard. How do I change a view in Windows 8.1: RE: Changing the folder view in Windows 10 Was RE: Trying to find a Window-eyes setting
Hi. I'd like my folder settings in Windows Explorer to be applied to all folders. I'm using Windows 8.1. I tried to follow the steps for Windows 10, but I didn't find an options choice in the File menu. Has Window-Eyes been updated so the mouse stops at the bottom of the screen?
Hi. Ever since Window-Eyes 9, I've had a problem reading information with the mouse. Specificly, if I moved the mouse to the bottom of the window, then hit the mouse down key, the mouse would go beyond this boundary, and read information that I don't think is visible to the screen. If the mouse was in this spot, and I tried to copy a file, WE would not work, and I'd have to hit the hot key to restart it. I was wondering if this issue has been fixed. Last time I checked, in Window-Eyes 9.2, the problem was still there, but I thought an update would solve the problem. I was using Window-Eyes in Windows 10, but due to other issues I had to revert back to Windows 8.1. Because of these issues with Window-Eyes, I've had to use a different screen reader. I'd be tempted to use WE 8.4, but I don't know how well it works with Outlook 2016. Any help would be appreciated on this. RE: Synthesizer or Speech Card Behavior on Asus Zenbook
Hi. Here's another way to get rid of distortion from a PC's built in sound card. In Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, hit the Windows key. You'll be at a spot where you can type text. Type in the following: Change sound Now hit the down arrow key. You want the Change Sound Card Settings choice. Press Enter on it. You're now on the playback page of a dialogue, and your sound devices are there. I'm assuming that your default sound device is the internal card of the PC. With things this way, arrow through the list of devices until you hear the one that's the default choice. TAB twice. You'll land on a properties button. Press Enter on it. Now, hit CTRL+TAB to get to the levels page. You'll be on the volume setting of your sound device. Use the arrow keys to adjust it to where it's a good level. TAB to OK, press Enter, TAB to OK again and press Enter. That's all there is to it. Hope this is useful. It works great for me. Have a good day, and don't work too hard. RE: I don't have to sign into Windows 10 to use Cortana, thanks Chris.
Hi paulette. If you're familiar with Apple devices, Cortana is like Siri. You can ask it different questions, and it will either answer them with its female voice, which sounds quite good, or it will open a web page in your default browser so you can read the information. One thing you can ask Cortana is "Tell me a joke." Her humor is right up my alley. You can ask the time, temperature, weather, and many other things. Some of these are just for fun, but some of what Cortana can do is pretty impressive. To activate Cortana in Windows 10, hit the WINDOWS key to activate the start menu, then TAB once to get to the microphone button. Hit SPACE on it, and you should hear a tone from Cortana, indicating you can speak to her. Another tone will sound to indicate the information is being processed, and you will either get an audio answer from her, or a web site will open. If you don't see a microphone button, then it means you have to set up Cortana. I called up Microsoft accessibility to do this, so I don't know what all is needed to be done. Contrary to what the consultant told me at Microsoft, you don't need a logon password to get it to work. You do, however, need a Microsoft account, and if you have an Outlook.com account you're good to go. One thing I almost forgot. You can have Cortana automaticly activate when you say "Hey Cortana". I personally don't use this, because anything in the vicinity of the microphone can activate it. That's about all I can think of to mention. Hope this is useful. A complaint and observation of Cortana.
Hi. First, I'm going to do my subject in the reverse order. I had trouble setting up Cortana, and I had to call Microsoft Accessibility to get it working. I was using JAWS to do this, and it wasn't reading the screen. I decided to check the screen with Window-Eyes, and it read it with no problem. So, at least for me, Window-Eyes does something JAWS doesn't. Now for my complaint. If you use Cortana, you have to have a password to sign into Windows, at least that's what I was told. I'd rather have Windows boot up directly to the desktop. Oh well. Microsoft has its reasons for doing things the way they do. Just some information for you. A different way to ask about the value of the Edge browser for us Window-Eyes users.
Hi. Before I go into my question, I agree with those that think Microsoft should have included the ability for screen readers to use Edge. If the code is there, screen reader manufacturers are willing to use it. Now, having said that, I have a different view of the Edge browser. What can it do for us blind users that Internet Explorer can't? The only thing I've heard of is you can write or type on a web page, but I don't know why this is useful. It obviously is, or Microsoft wouldn't have made it part of Edge. Just curious. I'm encountering a couple of issues with Window-Eyes and Windows 10.
Hi. I was successfully able to install Windows 10. It's a bit slow on this PC, but it's not too bad. However, I have encountered some problems with Window-Eyes 9.2, and I'd like some help solving them. First, when I opened Outlook 2013, Window-Eyes was very sluggish in responding to keyboard commands. I'd hit the down arrow key to go to the next message, and Window-Eyes wouldn't respond for two seconds. Now for the more serious problem. I figured that rebooting the PC wouldn't hurt, so I did. Window-Eyes loaded, but it gave the four descending tones indicating a driver wasn't working. Rebooting the PC didn't fix this issue. I understand that WE doesn't use the mirror driver with Windows 10, so I'm not sure what's happening. I'd like some help solving these two issues. I've been forced to use my other screen reader to do my work. Anybody have ideas? AI Squared will be getting a call from me tomorrow to solve this. Thanks in advance for any help. Update on my Window-Eyes installation.
Hi. As I mentioned in a prior message I decided to install Window-Eyes 9.2. I'm kind of the adventurous sort and figured I could sort out things. First, I agree with what someone said. If you already have a screen reader besides Window-Eyes on your PC, do the custom install. If the other screen reader is set to automaticly start when the computer is turned on, and you do a standard install, Window-Eyes and the other screen reader will both start talking. Thankfully I sorted that out. I haven't done a lot of using Window-Eyes with my PC other than email, but I've decided to have WE as my main screen reader. I'll have to get used to the keyboard layout, but I can do that. Now to check if I can get Windows 10. Have a good day, and don't work too hard. Hi. As I've mentioned before, in prior versions of Window-Eyes, when I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen I could hit the down arrow key on the numpad and the mouse would continue beyond this point. I have a couple of questions egarding installing Window-Eyes 9.2.
Hi. I discovered a bug in Window-Eyes 9.x, where if you're in Windows Explorer in Windows 8.1, and you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen, you can hit the down arrow key on the numpad and go lower than this point. If the mouse is in this location, and you try to copy or cut a file in the list, Window-Eyes would stop speaking, and I'd have to restart it. I've decided to install 9.2 on this PC anyway and work around the bug. I'm using another screen reader, and I'm willing to switch between it and Window-Eyes for my work. I do have a couple of questions regarding installing Window-Eyes on this PC. First, I have a basic question. How do I view the status line of the Windows Explorer? I think CTRL+INSERT+S will do this, but I'm not sure. I like to check the number of files in a window, so this is important to me. I'd rather use my current screen reader to start Windows, then I can exit it and start Window-Eyes. Whhen I install Window-Eyes, will there be a fight between it and my screen reader, or is the installer smart enough to not have Window-Eyes automaticly start? That's all I can think of for now. I'm eagerly waiting for Windows 10 to come out tomorrow, and I plan on installing it. Have a great day, and don't work too hard. Hi Larry. You're not alone with this issue. Looking for good security software that works with Window-Eyes.
Hi. I just had my PC reformatted thanks to something drasticly slowing my internet. It's working great now, but I need to find security software that works with Window-Eyes. The factory reinstall has McAfee, and from what I hear that isn't screen reader friendly, plus I don't know if this version will work for a limited time before you have to buy it. I was using Vipre, but it didn't catch whatever slowed my internet, so I'm hesitant to reinstall it. Malware Bytes is another that I'm willing to look at, and I've heard the latest version of it works decently with screen readers, but I need to know for certain before I do anything. Two others that I'm considering are Defender and Nod 32. Which of these is good for my needs? Last time I did something to this PC I had Microsoft accessibility uninstall McAfee and then I installed Vipre, but almost immediately after I did this my internet slowed way down, to the point I was getting download speeds in bytes per second, and often the downloads would time out.
