After having striven mightily to help me with a Sonar problem, my last
mail to Steve Clower got an automated reply, indicating that he has left
A I Squared. This was a bit sudden wasn't it?

If you have any support matters pending with Steve, you might want to
make sure that they are still in the works.

Yes by far Jaws isbetter then NVDA. Remember you get what you pay for or

At the risk of being shot down, I'm curious for those of you who've switched
from JAWS or still use it how it compares to Window Eyes. When I first
needed a screen reader and picked Window Eyes it was largely because I was
told the customer service was so much better than for JAWS, and I truly was
impressed how easy it was to reach someone at GW. This list has been my
larger source for WE help, but I've needed to call GW a few times over the
years. Let's say that VFO gives me a transfer to JAWS by some miracle. Is
that better than NVDA? I guess if there is a group list this for NVDA
users and some good sources for learning the program, I'll adjust to that,
but so far I've found it very verbose and I don't know the ways to adjust it
yet. I completely understand that not having to pay for a screen reader is
very tempting, but I don't want that to be my only reason for choosing a
screen reader once I cannot use WE anymore.

I don't think GW Micro sold its Customer's out.

Cash Flow has been a problem for a while, and GW Micro started to sell
future Upgrades to make up for the low Cash Flow. JAWS does this, and
I forget what they are called. SMA's?

Anyway, when you sell future upgrades at a discount, chances are that money is
going to pay today's Pay roll and Expenses, and when Tommorow comes, well when
tomorrow comes, and cash is still short, you start making Crazy Deals with the
Devil.

Allowing a Free version to anyone owning a copy of MS Office was a
questionable choice for GW Micro to do. Perhaps they received a token
Royalty from Microsoft for every Free Copy Registered.Hard to know,
since no one is telling why that deal with Microsoft was done, and what
GW Micro hoped to gain from it.Money of course, but how?

I enjoyed dealing with the original cast of Characters at GW Micro.
Good Mid-west values and I think they gave award winning effort when producing
their Screen Reader, and then supporting it after the sale.

I doubt if GW Micro sold us out. But, when a Company doesn't have the cash to
hire more talent to keep up with the latest Operating System, as well as
everything else GW Micro was doing.

Hard to really know what the Newest Parent Company intends. This is one of the
problems when getting swallowed by a larger fish, which then
gets swallowed by even a larger fish. Communication is bad enough even
within a small Company like GW Micro, but add a couple of extra layers and it's
a wonder that anything good gets out the door, or even done!

Customers? What Customers? We have Customers?

RE: Steve Clower

2016-11-23 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
Well said, Grumpy Dave. I'm disappointed, but if a business can't make it, they
do what they can. I unfortunately think I paid for an SMA and haven't used it
up, so I'm hoping VFO will give me some sort of credit for that if I'm told to
switch. I've never used JAWS and only played with NVDA a tad. I don't like
transition, so I hope we can support each other as users for as long as
possible.

Although we on this list have these discussions based on an event such as

We should probably conclude that the list is not being monitored by senior

screen reader, at least if it is a paid-for version, will keep running.
And for many a user, that might be the case, long enough to let you get
ready for some of tomorrow's technology. Admittedly, things look strange
at the moment, and maybe that is their way of preparing the market for
the shock of it all being discontinued. But my screen reader works for
today, and tomorrow will have more than enough with its own anxieties.

Tell you what - if we're forced to by Shark, I may just forget about
Windows machines as much as I can. Being forced into a screenreader and

officve. I like neither of them. Just my thoughts.--Matthew Chao

RE: Steve Clower

2016-11-22 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
I feel the need to develop this discussion point, as the betrayal of customers
has extended to at least another company in the VFO group.

I have an Optelec braille display, the 40 cell Alva Comfort. The Optelec
website has not offered Windows 10 drivers, its hot key references for
Window-Eyes have not been updated - there are incorrect hot key labels. I am
wondering about support to users generally.

I find it inconsistent that Freedom Scientific is charging ahead, while the
rest of us are being told that there was to be a transition period.
Window-eyes is not charging ahead, my braille display looks as if it will not
be developed or even repaired.

In situations llike this, it requires a small number of us to make lots of
noise, so if there are people who do not llike the noise we are making - select
all and delete. Having written to VFO, based on sensible suggestions from list
members, and not got even an autoresponse, I've concluded that they have failed
the 101 Introduction to marketing paper when they enrolled with Trump
University!

I shan't say for a second time what VFO stands for out of respect to those who
might be offended by language.

Vaughan.

  just a practical question here:

Out of the Window-Eyes staff left, is there any Blind or Visually

Seems to me, a developing staff and customer service of a screen
reader,

or any products for the blind, should at least prioritized having some
representatives for the target customer group. Otherwise, we soon
would
find ourselves misunderstood, whenever we point out challenges and

Hi Sky,

Narrator will have braille support soon according to Microsoft's Chief

She also mentioned the Window-Eyes for Office offer, which implies it won't
disappear soon, but this is only my guess.

Happy for us to start speculating - staff turnover is a fact of life, and
the context of this has been said well in the message below.

For myself: (but only on the home front) I'm stepping up my learning of the
Mac, so that if the takeover by VFO was simply to buy out competition to
JFW, I won't have to buy a screen reader I would not choose to use.

The six months transition is about up, and the evidence from my stand point
as being a customer who feels very disenfranchised is that VFO is not a
company I would choose to do business with.

People come and go, just like times. :)

Big thing is not just that someone leaves, but to what extend someone
knowledgeable and experienced comes in, to fill their shoes. And for sure,
it adds up to quite a number of staff members, leaving in very short time.
Were they forced to, did they decide the new company was not for them, or
did they already have plans - just needed an excuse? I do not think anyone
of us should start spiculating.

I am concerned to see so many leave at the same time, or at least in a
shorter period. The words we were told earlier:

"no changes for the first six months..."

Sure did not stick, did they. But noone could promise such a thing.
Personal decisions are hard to predict. yet we all would know, that a
company fusion - openly admitted or not - ALWAYS causes slim-downs. One
question seems valid here, and that is to what extend this slimming down
only took place in the Window-Eyes department, or if it actually found its
way all cross the new board.

Biggest mistake I find the new company does, is to leave their customers in
vain, and speculating. Good information on what is taking place, what would
be the plans (if any exists), and how reorganization will affect the
customers - all seems to be valid concerns for the market. Had they given us
the notice that EVERY staff member of the Window-Eyes team would be
dismissed in six months, well then it would have been a sad news, but it at
least would have left us all informed. Had they told us open-heartedly, that
they were planning to replace them with someone else - over whoever knows
how long a time frame - at least we would have known what was going on,
hence could have dealt with the facts. But the way it is now, we just keep
spiculating. And honestly list members, it is not going to take us anywhere.

Sad to see them all leaving, but more concerned what is going to be the
replacement, or outcome of it all. For now, I am going to enjoy the screen
reader the way it is. Except from that, I have put all further app
development for the community on ice, till things are cleared up.
And I guess few other developers are going to be overly eager on maintaining
and invent apps, long as we do not know what the future of the screen reader
will be.

Just keep in mind, it is just about six months now, so who knows if we soon
will have some more and leading information from the administration
department. Whatever will be, I guess noone cares to tell us, until they
find it the right time. Smiles.

Re: Steve Clower

2016-11-21 Thread Butch Bussen via Talk
I don't have a clue how long they will keep window-eyes around, nor do I
know who might be left as far as blind programmers. I've known Doug
since 1983, (back in the apple days), and he is the only sighted person
I've ever met who really can imagine things from our point of view. He
knows what is needed to make a program talk and talk well. As long as
Doug is on the project, never fear, we're covered.

But noone could promise such a thing.

company fusion - openly admitted or not - ALWAYS causes slim-downs. One
