[OSM-talk-be] announcement of a workshop in Brussels talking about OSM-mapnik
Hi, FYI, today, i received the following text concerning a workshop to be held in Brussels next month, on a subject related to OpenStreetMap (and the graphical engine Mapnik). I surprisingly read within the contribution list the name of : Open Streetmap (BE/FR) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Belgium ! Is somebody from the present list involved in this organization ? Regards, Didier|Linusable - Collision 1: Badness and Conflict Maps, schematics and books are complex graphic surfaces where meaningful elements fight for space in different dimensions. The potential for elements to collide grows exponentially whenever their semantic, visual or functional links are stronger. If we consider typographic and cartographic objects as “spatial arrangement of texts and other graphical elements”, than their design is essentially the work of organising collisions. In a conventional design practice, many systems are at work to prevent accidents from happening. Tension is deflated through erasure, simplification and filtering. What would be ways to articulate collisions, instead of avoiding them? This first workshop in this series is inspired by particular practices of ‘conflict’ and ‘badness’. ‘Badness’ is a curious concept introduced by computer scientist Donald Knuth to denote the level by which an automatically generated lay-out would stray from the ‘most globally pleasing’ form of text-justification. It refers to the way a system can dynamically decide a cut-off point and parametricises decisions. This process is called ‘optimisation’ when industrial quantities are implied. It might be a bit more complex when aesthetic and political criteria enter as decision makers. Knuths’ confidence in an absolute typographic truth contrasts with the way a ‘conflict’ is detected and resolved in software for collaborative code development. Versioning tools such as SVN or git consider any difference as a potential for conflict, and blocks the process until the issue is resolved outside the realm of the software itself. While collaboration is all about working with tension constructively, how can such processes be supported by collaborative tools? Mapnik, the graphical engine that generates the digital maps in Open Street Map will be used as a case-study. It has surprisingly little technical protocols in place for conflict resolution. If a streetname doesn’t fit, it disappears from the map; if there is a conflict, contributors are advised that it all comes down to a simple choice: “yours or mine”. How can we enrich the way maps are automatically laid out, specifically when there is a conflict of space, language, direction? How can we develop visual and typographic proposals for a kind of cartography that does not evade the tensions that underly them? This three day workshop will be a mix of games, exercises, prototyping and project presentations. We have invited participants and international guests with backgrounds in typography, architecture, cartography, art, collaborative writing, software development and activism. Together we will explore the potential of collision through combining computational and physical actions. Hi, I see here a path: first Ordnance Survey open their geodata, then National Land Survey of Finland and Dutch Kadastre followed. Next one is Iceland and other countries. All those mapping agencies give different license for their datasets. NLSFI has following: http://www.maanmittauslaitos.fi/en/NLS_open_data_licence_version1_20120501. As far I know, all those mapping agencies will allow OSMers to take their data sets and import to be part of OSM. IANAL and IMHO: local OSM mappers should decide if license is ok with OSM licenses, then add information to Contributor pages and then guideline local OSMers how to benefit local data sources. And this have to be done in very fast mode. There is other alternatives, but I prefer mine ;-) Other possibilities: · OSM Board/OSM Foundation Board/OSM Legal team will read and accept/deny those mapping agency contracts. They also guide how to use data and what will be include in Contributors page. My opinion: we dont have that kind of legal resource to handle all situations. This is also very bureaucratic and slow way to do it. Local OSM mappers will use free datasets with or without permission: this is already happening in Finland. · We dont care about Contributors datasets: at least in Finland OSM will then be marginalized. My opinion: if we can get baseline from somewhere we can focus to make updates to OSM and keep it as best local source of the (geo)data. Aihe: [OSM-legal-talk] Advice regarding terms from an agency Hi. The National Land Survey of Iceland has made their data free of charge and offer them as downloads. It spans numerous datasets which would be invaluable to the mapping progress in Iceland. However, there are terms which must be agreed before access can be legally obtained. The terms state that a distribution and publication permission is required for every further distribution or publication. I've talked to them today and the ministry to drop this condition in the terms and the director of the agency offered what I discuss in the next paragraph. The director of the agency responded to an e-mail I sent and has said attribution in the Contributor's page (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors) suffices. The terms as they are now do state all derived works need a copyright symbol and the name of the agency (unless the agency asks otherwise, which I think they will invoke in our case). But the agency also wants the terms to be displayed on said wiki page, including the condition that a special permission must be obtained for every further distribution or publication of those who retrieve data (for Iceland) from the OSM database. I suspect that such a condition is not in the spirit of open data but nevertheless I decided to inquire about it anyway. Would such a condition for data be acceptable for data contributions? If the terms would be on the wiki page, would they be legally binding for whoever downloads the data? The terms are displayed at http://www.lmi.is/almennir-skilmalar/ so you can get the full picture. There should be a Google Translate option at the top of the page. Re: [OSM-legal-talk] [cc-community] CC-BY, does the anti-TPM clause apply to adaptations?
So long as a licensee appropriately attributes the BY-NC licensor when they share their adaptation, they may apply CC-BY-SA (or any other license) to their copyright in the adaptation -- this is true but, because the original work may only be used for NC purposes, the BY-SA license would have limited value. If the original is incorporated into a truly adapted work, the whole work can only be used for NC purposes. This scenario points to the disconnect between what is legally allowed under the licenses and what makes sense as a practical matter when it comes to compatibility. The question of whether to close that gap in version 4.0 of CC licenses is something we expect to be debated in the upcoming public comment period. Also, I should note that CC cannot speak for the stewards of the ODbL and other public licenses as to how they interpret their licenses and what is compatible with them. Sarah On Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 7:36 PM, Anthony o...@inbox.org wrote: Hello, By this argument CC-BY-NC is compatible with CC-BY-SA, since CC-NC 1) allows you to create adaptations, and 2) does not dictate that you license your rights to an adaptation under particular terms and conditions. ODbL, like CC-BY-SA, is a (weak) copyleft license. Anthony On Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 7:06 PM, Sarah Pearson sa...@creativecommons.org wrote: Hi Anthony, Thanks for raising this question. The short answer is no, we do not think CC BY is incompatible with the ODbL. People can remix BY-licensed databases and license them under the ODbL. The reason why we think they are compatible requires a bit of a longer answer. First, we should explain how we think about compatibility. A license is compatible with another license if you can take work licensed under the first license, adapt it, and then license the rights you have in the adaptation under the second license. As a legal matter, this is allowed as long as the first license: (1) allows you to create adaptations, and (2) does not dictate that you license your rights to an adaptation under particular terms and conditions. CC BY v3 meets both of these conditions. So long as a licensee appropriately attributes the BY licensor when they share their adaptation, they may apply the ODbL (or any other license) to their copyright in the adaptation. As a practical matter, compatibility is slightly more complicated because of the concept I explained in my prior email on this thread: an adaptation is always subject to two copyrights. When those copyrights are licensed on different terms, it can be difficult for those using the adaptation to sort out their obligations. In this context, someone using the ODbL-licensed adaptation would have to comply with both the ODbL and CC BY (to the extent they make a use of the adaptation that implicates both copyrights). The TPM restriction in CC BY does not complicate reuse from this perspective. Although the ODbL permits application of TPMs if a free version is distributed in parallel, it by no means requires application of TPMs. Therefore, it would be easy to comply with both licenses by simply not applying TPMs to the adaptation. You also asked whether the new clause in the current working language of Version 4.0 about how to license adaptations of BY-licensed works changes anything. The answer to that question is no, the clause only makes explicit what I have explained above. The license applied to the adaptation must be one that allows someone using the adaptation to simultaneously comply with CC BY. This email only scratches the surface of all of the interesting and complicated issues relating to compatibility. We are in the process of developing a more in-depth explanation of these issues.

-- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Solution-pour-surveiller-les-gros-changeset-ou-potentiellement-problematiques-tp5745992p5746097.html Sent from the France mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
-- Christian Quest - OpenStreetMap France - http://openstreetmap.fr/u/cquesthttp://openstreetmap.fr/u/christian-quest ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr
