... [Talk-transit] validator rule for public_transport=platform
Hi, I'm getting messages from the validator claiming public_transport=platform can only be used on way or closed_way. This is not true. It can be used perfectly well on nodes. In that case the node represents the position of the pole. I just checked it on the wiki. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Buses All the poles of Belgian transport companies De Lijn, TEC and MIVB/STIB are mapped on nodes. If there is a platform, it is mapped, but that doesn't replace the pole, nor does it get added to the route relations. All the extra details like name, ref, route_ref etc also remain on the node representing the pole. The platform ways and the stop_positions are optional. Nice to have, but not at all crucial. The NODES with highway=bus_stop public_transport=platform bus=yes railway=tram_stop public_transport=platform tram=yes are what define the bus/tram stops over here and those get the details and those get added to the route relations. So please correct the validator rule. Kind regards, Polyglot ___ Talk-transit mailing list Talk-transit@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-transit

Re: [Talk-transit] validator rule for public_transport=platform
That's how it was added to the wiki ages ago. Since the start of the 'new' schema. The alternative is to add a new object public_transport=pole and a new role for the routes. This was not deemed necessary back then though. I must say I don't agree with adding the details of the bus stop to the platform ways, but I cannot control how things are evolving in Germany and to a lesser extent in France. All I can do is make sure it's standardized across all Belgian transport companies.
Re: [OSM-talk] Problems with the wiki (was Why OSM and not another collaborative mapping service?)
Warning: The email below is a rant. If you don't want to get stressed, don't read it. Like SomeoneElse, I'm not too happy with the state of the wiki right now. Right now in the wiki, there is an elephant in the room... He is actively editing the wiki for close to an year, has strong opinions and apparently lots of free time, regularly engages in edit wars, and has an history of issues collaborating with the community (inside wiki or not). Verdy_p and Tordanik communicate well (and I agree with them) about the latest issues on the wiki in his talk page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User_talk:Xxzme#Mass_category_changes (this and the next section) I'm sure the wiki admin (Harry Wood) is a busy person, but I would be grateful if these issues could be brought to a quicker resolution. The current circumstances have already lead a few wiki users to leave the wiki. That's another static page in the Wiki which needs manual work and hence tends to be not up to date. And we have the problem that translations of static pages trend even more to be outdated and inconsistend compared to the original pages. You can see this with the famous map features page and the respective translations. So my suggestion ist: this web page should be directly derived from CartoCSS eg. by a tool [to be developed!] and use e.g. the same symbols/icons that are used by mapnik (and stored in Github). Maybe the CartoCSS needs some additional information that this web page can be generated = this would require to be added there. I know that this is a lot of effort to develop but anything else will tend to be not accurate! Please start thinking about an automatic generation of this page.
Re: [Talk-transit] validator rule for public_transport=platform
There is a reason why we are keeping the nodes representing the poles. They have all the details since the beginning and we need them to keep track of changes coming in from the PT operators upstream. It's also easier to keep track of the history of that particular bus stop. Moving from node to way breaks the continuity of the history. There is no practical way to know what (deleted) node the new platform way was based on. A platform is not a pole… It is also common practice in Switzerland to map poles with public_transport=platform. In difference to what jo writes, we normally do not have BOTH, poles and plateform. If the platform is mapped, the properties of the pole are then transfered to the platform, and the pole node removed. nounours77 ___ Talk-transit mailing list Talk-transit@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-transit ___ Talk-transit mailing list Talk-transit@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-transit

Oppure access=no+foot=yes [+bicycle=yes]. Re: [OSRM-talk] Map Matching Plugin Questions
- Did you implement all of the described HMM break conditions (route localization, low probability routes, GPS outliers)? After reading the code in OSRM, I was only able to find the low probability routes condition. Did I overlook something? The localization is implemented by choosing the candidates before we start the algorithm. For each input point we adaptively chose between 5 and 10 candidates based on the distance to the previous input point. That part of the algorithm can be found in plugins/match.hpp. The outliers test is not implemented, I'm not sure it would add much value over the limited search radius for candidates combined with the pruning based on transition probability. - As far as I understand, MAX_DISTANCE_DELTA corresponds to the delta when comparing the route length and great circle distance for the low probability routes condition. The paper states a delta of 2000m, the implementation uses a delta of 200m. Feature or bug? I found that 2000m is a little bit on the conservative side. At least for my data 200m worked pretty well (sampling period was approximately 7s). Please not that most parameters are tuned for sampling periods of around 5 to 10 seconds. - What exactly does the confidence return value mean? Since we are dealing with real world data, matching will fail for some traces. That might be cause the trace is too noisy or the data from OpenStreetMap has problems like connectivity errors. To get a handle on that I gathered some empirical data on mismatched traces and tried to find a good feature to classify matchings are valid or invalid. The feature that worked best for me was the ratio between trace length and matching length (the intuition here is that invalid matchings tend to contain loops where detours are taken). I used that labeled data to fit a Laplacian distribution and constructed a naive Bayes classifier based on that. The confidence is the probability P(x \in valid). The values are only based on ~800 labeled traces which specific sampling rate, so take that value with a grain of salt for your data. What is missing is a good parameter selection based on the sample rate of the input. Its not clear when I will have time again to do that (for now massaging the data to fit the current constraints works quite well). ___ OSRM-talk mailing list OSRM-talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/osrm-talk

This page is an excellent example of what can go wrong with the OSM wiki. It's a personal POV page, written by a user with views that are, shall we say, not shared by all, and who seems to have issues with any form of collaboration (a temporary wiki ban was used before to address some previous issues). Where the wiki works well it's a collaborative documentation of How We Map*. It does contain some effective opinion pieces (e.g. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Duck_taggingoldid=603101 )** , but they are clearly labelled as such and don't attempt to misdocument how people in OSM map things. Maybe phone deserves special treatment but I would also prefer contact:phone over phone=* btw. In addition I think if the emphasis on contact was really that you can actually contact someone (contact:phone) then contact:twitter is also flat out wrong, because many companies will not reply and maybe not even read what you tweet them. this is one of the reasons why contact:twitter is much better then twitter=* because the first one explicitly says it can be used for contacting while the other could mean anything else that you can do with twitter. Likewise contact:website is reasonably clear while website=* may or may not offer a contact method. In addition most companies will have different web pages for different purposes and website=* would be typically the main page and not the contact form. Another reason why I prefer contact:* over phone/vhf/drums main keys is that I believe mapping phone numbers and websites is not the mainstay of OSM so it is good to prevent too much polution of the key namespace with things like vhf=*.
I have to admit that this is where I had got to myself. I'm working on the basis that 'website' is indeed the main page of the related website. I can then select 'book' or 'contact' or view their offerings to see if I want to visit. Adding a 'contact:website' may well be appropriate in some cases just as would 'book:website' or 'book:phone' if there are different numbers for the reservation system over the general enquiries. I don't think it is necessary or appropriate for OSM to provide a 'contact' directory for every POI on the map. What would make much more sense to me would be if there was a standard enquiry method for a website such as 'contact.domain' which removes the need for OSM to manage any of that secondary data. Once one has 'website=domain' even 'phone=xxx' becomes redundant ... as does addr: ... but that is probably going a little too far since the addr: details are needed for routing to a POI. -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk Rainbow Digital Media - http://rainbowdigitalmedia.co.uk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Icons for most popular items on default map
Hi, For some time lately we're working on the icons for default map. Nebulon42 is the driving force behind moving from current variety of PNG/SVG icons to more uniform set of pixel-aligned SVGs where possible, while I try to learn making new icons for very popular items. That's where I look for your help: drawing icons is not as hard as I thought initially, even with just 14x14 pixel matrix available, but designing them - finding the right visual metaphors and looking for feedback on recognizability - is in turn more complicated than expected. There is only a bunch of active people on osm-carto, so I thought you could help us with that (or more, if you like =} ). For a start I made a list of the most popular shops with no icon and created issues for all of them to discuss separately: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/1460 Taginfo says there are few more to cross the 10k uses line shortly. This border is just a convenient way to pick not too many items and it works great for me (shops first, however there are still some massively tagged amenities that may use the icon one day), but you don't have to limit yourself - just try to relax and remember there's simply no guarantee any of them will be rendered, because there's no strict policy on most things happening on osm-carto, however popularity is of course an important factor. I also tried to pick up some popular icons from French OSM style: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/1402 but that was before I learned using Inkscape and have followed nebulon42's path of pixel-aligned SVGs. =} Still you can find the corresponding tickets there and discuss or help in any other way. Next step for me will be creating testing environment to check how these icons would look like on real map, but that requires me to dig deeper into writing Dockerfiles. It's still waiting, but hopefully eventually I will do that and icons will in fact appear on default map. -- Piaseczno Miasto Wąskotorowe ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [Talk-dk] Export from addressnode
Re: [OSM-talk] [Tagging] [Wiki Talk] Why OSM and not another collaborative mapping service?
I'm really not sure what this discussion is doing on tagging and have redirected follow ups to talk (it has in the matter of a few mails already gone substantially off-topic though). The page in question is actually a fork of http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Map_Maker which was written as a response to the introduction of MM. I personally consider it dangerous to base such a comparison on anything but general principles. On the one hand you are always in danger of being out of date and at least in a legal grey zone if not already out side of it, on the other hand it tends to degenerate in to political/point of view material, are all commercial companies actually evil as Xxzme version seems to imply? [OSM-talk-be] Multi-layer problems
Hello everyone I surveyed near the new Virginie Loveling building near the train station in Ghent and mapped everything accordingly a few months ago. There are three levels of public road and the result on the map looks extremely ugly and unreadable: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/51.03685/3.70898 3D maps can't handle it either (e.g. F4: http://demo.f4map.com/#lat=51.0367277lon=3.7088474zoom=19camera.theta=71.119camera.phi=94.252) The fact that highway=pedestrian is now *always* rendered on top of buildings (no matter what the layer=* values are) makes things worse. If you haven't been there, I guess you have no idea how this place looks in real life from looking at the map. I can't think of any application that would be able to do something useful with it. Routing works a bit but if you cannot read the map or get useful spoken instructions that's not really helpful. This has left me wondering ... Should we either cut in the provided data or wait for renderers and applications to be able to handle these kind of situations? A possible improvement could be something like Google Maps does: it shows a layer chooser when you come near a multi-layer place, both indoor and outdoor IIRC. This seems complicated to implement in the current setup and I don't expect any OSM map at all to be handling these situations gracefully soon. There are also problems near the Bruges train station, though it looks a bit less ugly at first sight. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/51.19707/3.21997 Any ideas?
