Don't know if this is beta-related or not as I never tried it with a release version. :) I have a Read filter that will send an auto reply to certain e-mails triggered by a hot key. Only problem is that the e-mail I'm replying to isn't being marked as replied to. I'm currently setting the color group so I can tell but I would expect that the replied to flag would be set as well. Am I missing something? Is there something that I should be setting in the filter? Is this a bug? TB! What next?
Did I miss a statement from Ritlabs about their plans for the next series of 3.x beta testing? I sure hope that they are not thinking that this half-baked release of 3.5.25 is any kind of milestone. If the goal was to give a new GUI, even that task was not finished, considering that so much is still broken... most notably and especially the Connection Centre. :-) Seriously, what's going on? Will the bugs be fixed, or is RL planning to carry them over to 4.0? And, by the way just for the record (BTWJFTR?), this was the weirdest beta series I have ever witnessed. It started out with betas that were alphas and ended with a release that was at best a beta. I am really starting to wonder if beta quality is the best we can expect from Ritlabs from now on. I sure hope not. -- Avi Yashar Windows XP Pro SP2 and The Bat! Re: Deficiencies in v3.5
Hi Bill, On 7/6/2005 12:19 AM -0500, you wrote: First off, I've simplified my interface a bit. All I have to do is press Win-P and, thanks to PowerPro, I am in Gvim - configured for email - with the body of my email ready to edit. When I am done editing, pressing Alt-q saves my edit buffer to the clipboard and closes Gvim. To finish off, a Ctrl-V in MicroEd replaces what was there with my edited text. This is almost as good as built-in support. I suppose Ritlabs figured that anyone using a programmer's editor would figure out a way to integrate it - I'm fairly happy with this solution. While using GVim, this was my exact setup! :) Short of the actual keystroke assignments for the PowerPro macros. :) Allie, I have no desire to replace MicroEd - only to supplement it. Except for its inability to handle double space sentence separation, and thus reformat, it is very good at what it does. Very good yes. A read editor for it's purpose. :) I'm assuming you mean for email. But even for that I want more control. For example: - inserting a text file - inserting the output from an external program (including your favorite command processor commands) Rather exceptional requirements that aren't, let's face it, not common requirements. For you perhaps. :) - turning on or off free caret editing - that's virtual editing in Gvim Why would you wish to switch it off? ;) - Operate on columns, inserting and deleting or formatting text into columns MicroEd's column select mode doesn't help there? - it has an incredibly steep learning curve. However, if surmounted, it's knowledge well worth the effort if you do a lot of text editing. Part of the beauty of MicroEd, IMHO, is the very shallow learning curve to perform quite a bit. I realized I had miscommunicated. I actually meant exactly this about MicroEd, while GVim has a very steep learning curve. It's that learning curve that made me dump it in the end. Too much learning for questionable benefits in my own personal circumstance. It's while learning GVim, that I realized how good MicroEd is. GVim is the only editor that I've tried that can be made to do what MicroEd does. However, you have to learn so much to get there. It's an OK proposition for established GVim users, but not so for the one who wishes to use GVim for e-mail editing. Adding QTs gives even more power. But it doesn't come close to Gvim, Emacs, SlickEdit, etc. in raw power. It doesn't need to. This is my point. It's part of an e-mail program. It's designed for e-mail editing. It's not intended to be a be all and end all for text editing. However, for e-mail, it's very good. It's uncanny actually. :) Since I use plain text, WYSIWYG is what I get :-) Quoted text is handled as easily as reply text. Your paragraph below was reformatted to 60 character text width by typing gq} on the first line - Gvim speak for reformat paragraph. Yes. I'm familiar with GVim. I wasn't pulling your leg when I said that I had demystified it. :) I had reached pretty far with it. I was creating my own macros and was acquainted with most of the basic commands. I really put a lot of time into getting it to do what MicroEd simply does. If all one was doing was writing email - and you didn't care about the double space, MicroEd would be fine. Ah!! He agrees. :) MicroEd is an integrated editor in an e-mail client and is designed for writing e-mail. Why should it address more than e-mail editing needs? But for those of us that program, we need an editor that can accommodate programming needs. For example: MicroEd is an integrated editor in an email client. Why discuss it in the context of a programmers editing needs? BTW, Allie, Gvim 7 is in alpha - build 81. It supports internal spell check (and many other new features) and yes, it skips quoted text :-) I don't wish to get caught in that obsession again. I tend to get determined in solving problems. GVim was one such problem and it almost consumed me. LOL! The more time you put into it, the more you wish not to put it down. Not unlike the Linux obsession I keep witnessing. :) I don't need GVims power. I realize that now. If I use that thing, it would be me taking a sledgehammer to kill and ant. I merely skim GVim's power editing e-mail. If that small amount of power was easily tapped on, I'd not mind either. But the problem is that it's not easily tapped on. It's also very different in approach to what I'm accustomed to and I now realize why those who use it, wish not to use anything else, especially if it doesn't offer similar power. It was an important experience for me and makes me now smile at the OS wars etc. -- Allie Martin System specs: http://www.ac-martin.com/sysspecs.htm -=-=- From my brain, an organ with a mind of its own. 3.5.26 - Parser module is invalid
Hello all, I can't start The Bat! v3.5.26. My last installed version was v3.5.24 and this had no problems with starting. Some people wrote about this bug in v3.5.25, which I didn't test. Yes, me too. I just wonder if Ritlab guys actually do have a test plan or if they just make code and throw the program to a wild live testing. I am completely in the dark, when it comes to programming--you're talking to a liberal arts major and long-retired elementary schoolteacher, here. However, from reading the lists, I think they really are doing in-house testing, but they don't use IMAP in the extensive way that some people like Allie and Gary do. Additionally, I don't have the impression that Maxim is working on IMAP; rather, it seems that when he fixes some of the things that he is actually working on, like OTFE and the msi installer, something else accidentally breaks. Shoot, I can barely keep my own shoelaces in order, so I just tend to keep giving the development team the benefit of the doubt and hoping for the best. :) I think that the IMAP servers that are giving troubles should be identified and they should do some in-house testing before sending out this crippled betas. Most IMAP users on here also use Mulberry and having us use a 99% perfect IMAP client for comparison is probably not what the lads at RIT want to hear. The MSI installer worked 100% perfect here without a hitch. Missing icons I can live with, spelling mistakes I can live with, using a non functioning email client for sending and receiving email is a little bit harder to get to grips with. Basically, I feel very let down, saddened by their Cavalier, couldn't give a damn attitude to important issues in favour of trivia. Allie, Gary, Clive, Mauel, myself and many others have all reported the same persistent problems time and time again and what do we get? A sound file!!! I doubt many of us even noticed there was no sound when a message came in, we were probably too busy jumping, singing and making our own noise when one managed to. I doubt any of us notice any messages coming in let alone the theme tune to Charge of the Light Brigade if they do. What incentive is there to remain loyal when the developers themselves show no loyalty to their long time users? It's been a very long while since I recommended TB to anyone. As much as I hate to admit it, my desire to be able to use TB full time again is waning more and more with each new build. Diminishing credibility is a phrase that springs to mind. Hi Tony, -- 07.06.2005 19:54 +0100: I think that the IMAP servers that are giving troubles should be identified and they should do some in-house testing before sending out this crippled betas. Mary I've even changed IMAP servers at my own cost in order to see if that improves TB's performance on my machine and all it did was improve threading when I use Mulberry. Me too, Tony. Before I went to Fastmail, I used to deal with a big German provider. Let's say, one of the best in web-hosting. It was okay, but not even good. They didn't provide server side filtering and filtering with TB! on IMAP accounts seems to be a big problem, as you did see on your own setup before Fastmail. Don't want to say, that it was only TB! why I moved to Fastmail - I would never regret having moved too Fastmail, 'cause it's great. But TB! was one point, which I moved away with email from my web-hoster. In Mulberry I just tested the old one. I think I don't have to tell you, that it was really nice. Now I know, why they told me, that they didn't heard of IMAP problems with their servers, when I contacted them at that time, saying IMAP is poor slow. -- Manuel, http://www.manuel-breitfeld.de Current beta is 3.5.26 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

I hope they will then take your advice. They are also getting good in-put from Tony and from Allie, both long-time TB! users and supporters, and from many others besides. I hope, just as an aside, that they will stop putting builds with major flaws in them on the public RitLabs download page, the way they did 3.5.0.14 and just this past week 3.5.25. Took a lot of writing back and forth on TBUDL to try to sort out the OTFE problems of one newbie there, problems created simply by the public offer of the faulty 3.5.25. And, in fact, I'm not sure they are sorted yet, since I haven't had a reply from that newbie since I posted to him what Maxim wrote to me here in regard to the uninstall/install procedures that will enable OTFE, for users of the Professional version. -- Best regards, Mary The Bat 3.5.26 Professional on Windows XP 5.1 2600 Service Pack 2 Current beta is 3.5.26 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/
