Does this also fix the issue that when I import messages with daylight saving on
a different creation time is shown that when I import the messages with daylight
saving off ?
For example

I import with Daylight Saving off, and Created shows 16:00

Daylight saving is enabled and Created still shows 16:00

I import the same message again

In the new message Created is shown as 17:00

Some experiences with TB 5 RC4

2011-03-31 Thread Robert van der Hulst
Title: Some experiences with TB 5 RC4

Hello,

I installed TB 5 today and this are my first experiences:
I see a lot of improvements. Especially the URL manager. Congratulation with
the progress made.
I have tried a couple of other email clients over the last year, but nothing
beats TheBat !

Here are some comments on RC4

- My message list tabs have disappeared (Unread, Attachments, Flagged etc) I had
 to manually recreate them.

- My views modes were not working as before. The link between some of my folders
and their view modes was gone. I had to reset them.

- To set the viewmodes for a group of folder, I pressed the 'Used by'
button. This brings up a dialog that is not resizable. As far as I can see this
is the same dialog as the 'Watch' dialog on the virtual folder properties window
(with exception of the viewmode column in the left control) .
Both dialogs should be resizable to make them easier to work with with a large messagebase
( 500 Folders, 350.000 messages, about 10Gb disk space)

- The 'Use by' and 'Watch' dialog have a select all and deselect all button. I am missing the
options that I have in the message finder (like 'Select current account', 'Select
including subfolders' etc) I am also missing these

- It would be nice if the URL manager had an option to only display the URLs from
the current selected message.

- There seems to be a problem in the URL manager when sorting my subject. Some
links are shown with the wrong subject. I have seen examples where images were listed
under the wrong subject.

Re: Discussion : Image Download manager usage on daily basis

On Wed, 23 Feb 2011, at 12:37:13 [GMT +0100] (which was 12:37 where I live)
you wrote about: 'Discussion : Image Download manager usage on daily basis'

I am trying to Image Download Manager on regular daily basis and have many
 observations:

 1) I have mode Deny unknown enabled, so TB adds every unknown URL to
list, I have yellow icon with question mark displayed almost permanently
and I must tell You, deleting/downloading urls or creating rules takes
 much time...

So I am waiting for instant addition of email/domain address of sender like
it is in MS Outlook for example or if is contact in AB, enable this in
contact from Image Download Button context menu.

 2) As a must-have feature I see option in Folder properties and in AB contact
properties, where I Allow/Deny images from this folder/contact and new
rule will be created automatically, because creating such rule is very
tedious (there are bugs preventing this, but they should be already fixed
in upcoming betaversion as I see in BT).

 3) creating Folder source rule is strange, because folder is added
without whole path, only as a standalone name, so how IDM knows, which
folder in which account is it?

 4) as a second must-have feature I see pre-defined rule for blocking
tracing URLs, I must create deny rule for every tracing URL, it should be
placed on top of the list of rules

I second this.
It would also be nice to have a simple option to allow all images in the current
message, like many other products have.

But, meanwhile, can any of you think of a way I could use to set the
number of days to keep messages in this type of folders?

Do we know who the plug-in's author is, or if the source is available?
I've misplaced my copy of TB's plug-in design specs. If we had these,
we could ad a feature to it - with the author's permission of
 course.

This has nothing to do with the plug-in.

The plug-in simply produces a message with some special header fields.
See below for an example. The macro system uses the header fields to
build a folder name, and that folder name is not 'folder properties
dialog' compliant.

HTML Image Request

2008-12-19 Thread Robert van der Hulst
I have a couple of relatively simple requests (I think):

First I would like to have an option to allow all images of the current
selected mail to be loaded.
Right now I will have to look through the URL manager and try to
figure out which entry in the list of 'Unresolved' belongs to the
current message.

It would also help if the images from the current message were
highlighted.
Note that the images for one message may come from different sources

The second question :
It would be nice in the URL manager to have the ability to sort and/or
search the URLs on the Blocked/Allowed tab. Right now it is not so
easy to locate entries on these tabs.

Finally I would like the ability to add lines to the URL manager
manually and the ability to use regular expressions or wild cards. For
example: at this moment I have entries like:

http://a.somedomain.com
http://b.somedomain.com
http://d.somedomain.com

I would like to setup a line like:

http://*.somedomain.com (Wildcard)
or

http://.*\.somedomain\.com (Regular Expression)

TB Slow shutdown speed

With the steady stream of new build, I have to shutdown TB almost

And now I have noticed that shutting down TB takes quite long.

There was an issue before (https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6831).
This issue was closed last march, but I have reopened it.

Some statistics:

5 seconds until UI disappears
180 seconds (3 minutes !) until program disappears from memory
almost no processor/network activity in the meantime

Windows Vista Business 64, SP1, 8 Gb
Intel Core Duo 6400 2.14 GHz
TB Memory usage 35 Mb (Peak 47 Mb)

Message Base:
4 accounts
335.000 messages

For the past few versions of TB (including 4.1.1.4), I will be reading
through a longer HTML email (say a newsletter), and after about 2
seconds, TB will automatically scroll the email back to the top. This
seems to have gotten better in the last version of TB (only doing it
once) whereas prior versions would do it non-stop.

It seems to happen more in emails that have a lot of graphics. Could
TB be re-loading the page as new graphics are loaded causing this? It
is really a pain to try to read an email when it keeps going back to
 the top.

 Has anyone else seen this?

Slow shutdown speed is back again...

2008-09-29 Thread Robert van der Hulst
I just noticed, when I tried to install the latest beta on my machine,
that the slow shutdown times for Tb are back again.

It takes literally minutes for TB to disappear from memory (and to
release the EXE file) after the last 'maintenance screen' in the
shutdown cycle has been hidden.

I am not sure in which version this was reintroduced, but I would not
be surprised if this is somehow linked to the new index format.

One difference with the previous slow shutdowns, is that Tb allows you
to start a new copy of the program before the old program is removed
from memory.

MessageBase:
4 accounts
472 folders
15 virtual folders
300 thousand messages

This also happens when starting Tb and shutting it down immediately
(without retrieving any messages)

Looks ok now. Although the behavior is still different from the
behavior on the unread tab in the messagelist:

- when you start with multiple folders and mark all messages in one of
the folders as read, it remains in the original position: ok

- if you navigate to another folder (for example using smartspace or

then the second folder stays visible on its correct position, but the
first folder disappears from the list. That is not what I would
expect.

In the Unread tab of the message list all messages stay visible until
you leave the folder. I would expect similar behavior for the Unread
tab of the Folder Tree. So all folders with unread messages should stay
visible until you navigate to a new tab, or until a 'Get New Mail'
command is executed.

There is one showstopper which has been reported many times before over
  the past 7 months, https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6632
(0006632: Impossible to use folder list sort order from 'All' on
  'Unread' tab).

With its present behavior, the Unread folder view is difficult and
awkward to use. Whenever the last unread message in a folder is opened,
that folder jumps to the bottom of the list, forcing the user to scroll
upward through the entire list in order to find his place.

Please restore the old behavior, in which the folder remains in the
same place, but its name is unbolded. That simple change would make the
Unread view far more useful and user-friendly than the present
  implementation.

Cannot confirm this. Click on the header of the folderlist to undo the
sorting (until the arrows disappear).

Ok. Now I see what you mean.

I am using the smartspace feature to mark messages as read. When you
use that and mark the last message in a folder as read, then the focus
goes to the correct next folder in the list, even though the folder
with no unread messages goes to the bottom of the list.

So why is there a Tab then? Or why isn't the tab empty?

Looks interesting and does not look like a stretch from some of TB's
 capabilities. But IMAP first. :)

Actually, Address History implements many of those functions. And yes,
 IMAP first :-)

I suggest you have a closer look at Xonbi before comparing it with
Address History. There are more differences than similarities. For
example: Xonbi sits beside your message. You do not have to switch
from a folder tree to another tree and back. Xonbi also automatically
follows the current message: it automatically displays the history for
the sender of the current message. It also shows what they call
'network', iow: a list of to and cc addresses from recent emails from
the person, and much more.

Please understand me: It is not that I am not happy with TB, but
adding something like this to the product seems a logical thing to me.
Much more logical than for example a feature as 'mail chat'

New feature

2008-07-05 Thread Robert van der Hulst

I recently saw an Outlook add-in that I really liked. It is called
'xobni' (inbox reversed) and what it does is analyze your message
base and display some information from the sender for the current selected
mail message. This includes:
- That persons network (recent addressees as seen in the message base)
- phone number (when found in either the contacts list or a message
footer)
- recent messages
- recent attachments
- time of day (in the form of a small bargraph) that the sender usually
writes messages
- it (optionally) checks for the existence of a Linked In account for
the sender and displays some of that profile info, including the
senders picture when available.

Has anyone else seen this, and would you like to see something like
that in TheBat ?

At my PC it takes quite a while, but not AGES. Maybe it will be
necessary to specify the duration in Seconds and not in an such
subjective unit. Even in the bugtrack I did not see real durations in
 Seconds.

AGES was between 2.5 and 3 minutes the last time I checked. ( I walked

Moving multiple messages to anoher folder does not refresh the original folder

I found the following problem:

When I select multiple messages in a folder and move them to a new
folder (by dragging them or through the Ctrl-V dialog, then the
messages are moved but the original folder is not always refreshed, so
it appears if the operation was not successful.

This does not always happen, but so far I have seen it when:
- multiple messages are moved
- using either drag to folder in the Account tree and also using the Move
Message dialog
I think this only happens when the target folder is watched by some
virtual folders and when a filter condition in one of the folder is
affected by one or more of the messages that are being moved.

Did anyone else see this ?

Well, it happened many times before, so it won't be a big surprise,
but... we are going to release 4.0 on February, 7th. It was the last
date set for this release, so we must keep with it.

We tried to remove all screaming problems before the X day, so
hopefully it won't be too buggy. If you have complete showstoppers,
please use this one day that left, so we can try to fix it. The good
news (as usually) - we are not going to stop after the release, nobody
goes off to holidays or anything like that, so the new Beta cycle starts
immediately after the release (actually, the current one will just
continue), so we will make a better 4.0.x release before we go to
 4.1.x.

This is not intuitive though. I can't think of another program that
won't let you select less than a whole word. Is there a reason not to
 allow it?

I agree. I have already accidentally removed whole words in a message

Do you have your folders set up to purge and compress on exit?

Yes, on the inbox, outbox, Sent Mail and deleted folders (The first
three are empty on exit because I use rules to filter incoming and
sent messages out of them to 'Known' and 'Unknown' folders) and I can see
that happen (progress bars).

That takes about 20 seconds. The rest of the time (2 minutes 25
seconds) TB runs silently in the background.

Shutting down TB takes very long

2008-01-08 Thread Robert van der Hulst
With the new alpha (beta) cycle going on I have to restart TB every
now and then to install a new build (I normally keep it running 24*7).

I noticed that after shutting down TB it takes ages before the program
really disappear from memory (I used taskmanager to check for this).

I just timed it and it took 2 minutes and 45 seconds to finish.
I think it is creating msgs.dump files for my virtual folders.

Am I the only one seeing this?

Some statistics for my situation:

- 3 Accounts
- 478 folders
- 4 Gb disk space used by the message base
- 29 virtual folders
- 310 thousand messages
- Most virtual folders monitor only one folder (and filter on mail
from/to a certain address)
- All virtual folders have the 'store state between sessions' flag
unchecked.

I saw the following memory usage
When shutdown begins: Working Set: 48 Mb, Peak 74 Mb
At the end of the shutdown process: Working Set: 75 Mb, Peak 75 Mb

I also noticed that even though I have virtual folders deep in the
hierarchy like (Account\Folder\SubFolder\*VF*)
TB creates a folder on disk directly under the account to store the
file msgs.dump (Account\VF)

I finaly found a folder 'cache' in my messagebase folder with what
looks like images used in HTML mails. Is this ever cleared ?

Folder list sorting for 'Unread' and other tabs

2008-01-06 Thread Robert van der Hulst
I have my folder list sorted in a particular way:
for each account the Inbox/Outbox etc first and then the rest of the
folders grouped in order of importance (important ones first)

On the 'Unread' tab we now have the ability to show the account in a
column, which I like very much.

However: I have found no way to display the folders on the 'Unread'
and other tabs in the same order as the original folder list.

Because operations such as 'jump to next unread' use the folder order of
the 'All' tab, using them on the 'Unread' tab sometimes produces
unexpected results. For example 'jump to next unread' on the first
folder of the list goes to the end of the list.

I have opened a BT issue for this. Please support the issue when you

That is called 'Virtual Folder' and it's been around for quite some time
 my friend :-)

But not with all Adresses which belong to one Person of the
 Adressbook.

I'm not sure what you mean.

What he probably means is:
- Create a Virtual folder and associate it with an address book entry.
All mails to/from all the email addresses in the address book entry
hould be shown in the VF

- If you update the email addresses in the address book entry(because
a person gets a new address for instance) the virtual folder should
automatically show the messages to/from the new address as well.

Btw: I how to create a VF and configure this manually, but that means
that a new address has to be added a couple of times:

- in the address book
- in a VF filter condition for Sender
- in a VF filter condition for Receiver

By the way: I would love to see a rule for VFs so you can filter on
Sender or Receiver in one condition. Most of my VFs are used to show
mail from/to people and I have to duplicate the email address in each
VF Filter.

I tried to work around this by specifying that the header contains an
email address, but that makes the VFs VERY slow.

Suggestions for the new Addresses History Tab

2007-12-23 Thread Robert van der Hulst
I really like the idea of the Addresses History (AH) tab, but I have some
comments to it. I would like to share these with you and ask for some
feedback.

A I would like to see an option to show the addresses from my Address
Book rather than all the addresses collected from the message base.
The ones in the Address book are more valuable to me than the others.

B Sometimes people use more than one address. In the address book you
can add multiple addresses for one person. I would like to see these
people as one entry in the Addresses History. Would that be possible?
(if A is implemented then this is automatic)

C In the settings for the AH tab I have specified that it should
collect addresses for outgoing messages only. Yet I see :
- Addresses wit no 'Last Out Date'
- Addresses from messages that were send to me (i was in the CC list).
Some of these have a 'Last Out' date as well, but I never wrote to
these people
Is this a bug? Can others confirm this ?

D he 'AH Settings dialog allows you to specify the 'Folders to scan'.
The dialog for this does not allow you to mark a group of subfolders
by selecting a parent. I see that on more dialogs in TB (for example
also on the 'Select Folders' dialog for Virtual folders. On the
Message finder there are context menu options to select an entire
account of a folder and all its subfolders. I would like to see that
same functionality all over the system. That would make selecting
folders MUCH easiers.

Of course, The Bat! could use last Received date form the message header,
but as you know, this is the date when the message arrived to the server.
When you connect to the server tomorrow, The Bat! will receive the message and
write internally the tomorrow date as 'receiving' date. From this point of
 view
 all is logically correct.

After reading all the responses to this thread I think the only
sensible solution is for TB to have an option (during import) to set the
received date to the last Received date from the header or the current

you wrote about: 'The Bat! 3.99.8'

I tried it but found the following problem:
After starting 3.99.8 one of my (three) accounts was missing most of its
folders. The only ones it showed were Inbox, Outbox, Deleted etc (the
 default ones).

Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L brought them all back.

After closing TB and restarting it the list was gone again.

So I decided to go back to the build I was using before (3.99.3) and guess
what: It immediately showed all the folders at startup (in the correct
 non-alfabetical order as well).

Did you change something in the Account properties file between 3.99.3 or
3.99.8 or do you have another explanation for this ?

Am I the only one that loses folders with 3.99.8.

Sorry for that, it was to early in the morning ;-)

I downloaded the .9, restarted TB!, but forgot to copy the new .exe into
 the program folder.

Marek, you are right, all HTML messages are quoted right now.

I always hated the way TB quoted HTML messages with a table with a blue
left column, so I had the setting 'Reply to HTML as text' on.

I just tried this again (hoped to see an improvement) but it still does
that.

Am I the only one that does not like this quoting style.
Or is this configurable somewhere ?

after observing TB under Vista Bussiness 64 bit in a dual 2 core PC,
the CPU usage was when reading, writing and sending mail very low,
even with extreme long mails under 2 %. The maximum of used memory I
registrated was about 15 Kb, but generally while in use (reading,
writing) between 8 and 12 Kb, when just active in the system tray
 about 7 Kb.

Thanks for the report. But with regard to the memory usage: that must me

So why was it deprecated, and why is it still listed as an option in the
helpfile (and not marked deprecated there) ?

In most other products features are marked 'deprecated' in the
documentation for years until they finally are dropped.

I agree with Vili that has been removed silently. Just one line in the long
readme, without explanation for the reason why it was removed.

After saving and closing Customiser, I have a Menu-Item with all 10 of my

Furthermore, I cannot change the colourgroup of a message at all.

After reopening the Customiser I can see that the Container Item Kleur is
still there, but the names of the Sub-Container (Sub-Items above) have all
been replaced by the title of the item they belong to in the list of the
Customiser: folder colour group (see attached).

I tried this too. But after closing the customizer I got all kind of
AVs. Restarting TB resulted in AVs as well. Only after I restored the
backup of Tbuser.def everything worked as before (without the

When I try to save the reply as draft I get the a AV at address 458BF08B

Has anyone else seen this.
Could this be related to the Outbox Protection that was discussed in this
group ?

I am getting the message Invalid Class Typecast when I hit send after
writing a reply to a message, and also when I try to save the message in
 the outbox.

One more addition

after switching back to 3.64.01 I could see a message counter of 8 messages
in the outbox, but I did not see any messages in the message list.
After doing folder maintenance on the outbox I could see the messages. They
were all identical. Some of them had the draft flag, others not. Apparently
the messages were saved correctly to the Outbox.

I have deleted all but one and could succesfully send that last messages.

Could someone tell me if there is a plugin to manage tis task ?

I am running a mailserver (MailTraq) that has news-mail and mail-news
gateway. I have created a special user on the mailserver that receives all
the news messages and have created an account in Tb for this user. This
works very well.

There is a fully function free version of MailTraq available
(Mailtraq4Free): http://www.mailtraq.com/47/

 Hello Robert,

What is your setting for Home Directory in Account Properties/Files
Directories. Did you speficy a complete path or are you using Default.
I have Default for each account and just a Mail Directory set in
 Preferences/System.

A complete path. Because. and this is why I want Voyager so badly,
I have the mail directories on a USB drive - not below the folder with
 all of TB's executables.

If you set the root mail directory in TheBat (Preferences/System) to the
USB drive, you should be able to use default for each Account.

Did you have all of your accounts stored in the same mail directory
or were they in different locations?

All the accounts are under one folder called mail.

I bet you have a hard coded path in your Account properties. Get rid of
that and let everything be relative to the General Mail Directory, and it
works.

MM The Editor registry key has left from the previous version of
MM Voyager, the 3.63.03 keeps header info in the INI file.

 No, it isn't.
I deleted the voyager tree in the registry and on sending a message
(not on opening and closing the editor without sending) it creates a
 voyager\editor\(Standaard)
   \Headers
\speller\24941\(Standaard)
 etc
 The other keys:
 voyager\(Standaard)
\LastBirthCheck
\MslOrder
\Next Tip
\Show Tips
 are created on startup
 ('Standaard' is Dutch for 'Default')

Confirmed: happens here as well.

Beta version of the Voyager still keeps something in the registry, but
we will eliminate registry usage in the release version.

Thanks for the confirmation !

Unfortunately not. I've ordered TB over element5 and the e-mail from
RITLABS only contains the registration information :-(

Try a fake order number and then use Help/Enter Registration code to copy
the registration info in. That is what I did, and it works.
