Nearly all the messages in my Send-Mail-Folders are signed with a S/MIME-certificate from Thawte. So it's the problem others have described. I could try it with the MS Crypto API but I won't since 1.60c works ok for me. I'll wait for the next version and try it again then. I have a Windows 2000 system with all the fixpacks that are available with Windows Update (Well, I have not installed the Security Rollup since some colleges had problems with it). It is a stable system and the only extensions I use the whole time is Norton Internet Security 2002 Professional and Norton Antivirus 2002. This constellation works fine with 1.60c. So I don't think it's a crappy system here that causes this bug. Greets, Robert F. Beeger || | Robert F. I am running windows XP on a Athlon 800mhz system with 512MB ram, and I have the Norton 2002 AV program but I dont use it because it had conflicts with other programs which I like and wanted to continue using. Therefore I use AVG antivirus instead of Norton 2002... Hi! I use Computer Associate InoculeIT. It can be called from the command line. How can I do that? I don't think you can in TB! Options | Virus protection | External plug-in. Roelof, 2) Edit the registry in the key: HKCU/software/RIT/The bat/RAS height (set to 0) RAS left (set to 0) Thanks that sort of solved it. How and why it did this I don't know, as I don't have a resolution that big. The top and left were set at 3000. Here is my reply to a message sent to me by an Online Team Leader at First Union Online. (I sent a copy of the message to Sue, before I sent it to TBUDL.) QUOTE Please see my comments below. I look forward to your solving the problem. Thank you for your help. -- Dan Grunberg Mon, 29 Apr 2002 07:31:06[GMT -0400] (7:31 AM EDST) the Online Team Leader wrote: I just wanted to update you. I have not received a solution to your problem yet. However, I have a couple of questions for you 1) Have you tried using Internet Explorer or Netscape to view your checks? I don't use Internet Explorer. I have always been able to view my checks with Netscape Navigator. Just to be sure, I checked again this morning (April 30). I viewed the image of one check for which no number was shown in the list of checks, and I viewed the image of one check for which a number was shown in the list of checks. Yes, both of the check images were viewable with Netscape Navigator. I still must insist that I should be able to use Opera for all of my online banking, not Opera for almost of it and Netscape Navigator to view checks at First Union Online. Opera is a MUCH faster browser than Navigator is. By the way, Opera may be downloaded free from www.opera.com. Would you be willing to test using either Netscape or IE to verify if your checks are viewable at all? checks? I would be happy to run any tests that you'd like me to run. The reason I ask, (and I understand your preference for using Opera) is that we do have some customers (who use IE and/or Netscape) who are not able to view their checks. It has nothing to do with their browser. That's interesting. Your customers' not being able to view images with both IE, Netscape, and Opera seems to indicate that there's a problem with First Union Online rather than with the browsers. 2) Do you use paper checks purchased through First Union, or do you purchase your checks from an outside vendor? I use Versa Check forms (I get them at Staples) and I print my own checks using the Versa Check Personal software (also available at Staples). As a rule, all of my checks, even the checks on which the check processing system can't seem to find the number, produce images that are viewable with Netscape Navigator. This morning, I went back to First Union Online using Opera. I tried to view the same two checks that I viewed with Netscape Navigator [see under (1) above]. Each time I tried to view a check, First Union Online presented me with a Titanium Default Error Page message instead of a view of the check. My wife uses checks purchased from First Union, on her account. (Our accounts are coupled.) I just tried to use Opera to view the image of a check posted to her account. First Union Online presented me with a Titanium Default Error Page message instead of a view of the check. It would seem that who prints the check forms has nothing to do with my problem viewing images of the checks at First Union Online. == END QUOTE == Current Ver: 1.60h FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

That can mean only one thing: You're relying on folder templates. That's a no-no! stock lecture I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates. In 150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates. They are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address properly. There is nothing else for which folder templates can be used that can't be covered and even improved upon using Address Book templates. There are dangers in using Folder Templates that are not there when you use AB templates. The dangers are all complacency based and are at their worst in templates which use the %TO= macro. If, at the instant you start a new message you happen to be focused on the wrong folder, the message gets given the wrong address. This happens when you click a mailto without changing folders. The results vary from embarrassing to excruciating depending upon the content of the misdirected mail. BTW - another mistake in such templates is to use the construct %TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED] without a %TO='' before it. So any pre-existing addresses are retained. Back to the lecture: every time I say this, someone takes exception to something I've said with comments like 'danger' is a bit harsh or I've used Folder templates for ages and it's never gone wrong for me. Here's a fact for you: it goes wrong. That's why I'm writing this message yet again. It works exactly as designed and that design has a fundamental flaw. The flaw is that it places too much responsibility on the user to make sure that the addresses given on a new message are those intended. With address book templates, there is never a mistake of this kind. Replies are perfectly directed. New messages are a bit trickier. Instead of clicking to the folder then clicking for a new message, you have to click to the right of the new message button and select the list address from the favourites (having denoted that the address *is* a favourite in the address book). /stock lecture - -- Cheers -- .\\arck D. Failure to warn on unresolved nickname
Since this never was entered into the database I would like to discuss it a bit here before putting it in myself. Some off-line discussions a month or more ago indicated that perhaps the operation that I see as a failure is actually working as designed. If so, I feel the design is faulty. I'm using The Bat! Version 1.60h Serial Number 35D66563 under Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2 and would like to report a bug The bug description: If a nickname is entered into an address (TO, CC, etc) field on a message and the user fails to tab or press the enter key while the cursor is not in that field, the nickname is not resolved. I understand that is working as designed. I would suggest that the design is faulty. In just too many cases I have just pressed enter to move down or have been doing a forward and just pressed the send key. I understand that you may want to send to a local net or even to your IP with just a single unresolved name letting the IP assume (as mine does) that the proper address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Actually you wanted it to go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and you typed the nickname and it was not resolved. I very simple solution for this would be the ability to set a switch in account preferences that would cause THE BAT! to warn anytime that an attempt is made to send to an address that does not have an @ in it. The switch would default OFF and would not cause any problems for current users as the default action would be the same as it is today. Steps to reproduce the bug: Type an address nickname that is not resolved in your address book and send it. This assumes that you DO NOT have autocomplete turned on. -- Gene mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Windows 2000 [version 5.0.2195] Mail Client: THE BAT 1.60h Current Ver: 1.60h FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You have to have a license for Norton Anti virus to make it work. The Norton code you install on your machine provides full directions on how to use it. I understand that this may be different with the 2002 version. I am running the 2001 version. Basically you use a Norton pop (pop.norton.antivirus) as your pop server and you pass your USERID and IP's pop address as parms. They fetch your mail, examine it (always latest level of signatures) and if infected then there is the normal dialog as what to be done, once completed the mail is forwarded to you. All this effort for what?? Batted-out!!
Hi there, List members , I signed-on and purchased my entry to the bat! about 2 weeks ago. I was expecting a reasonable new alternative to OE. But all I see is about 200 e-mail exchanges per day!! about PROBLEMS with TB and hopes for better versions etc. How can we/you spend all our time nit-picking the program of our choice every time we sign-on to the net?? Easier for me to go back to OE and not have to read 200 questions/ day about TB. AND WE PAID FOR TB!! While OE and NS are free. Isn't there something wrong here guys??? Listen, I paid my money for the bat! but can't believe the research work (hundreds of daily messages) I have to participate in to use it. This is not a useful tool it is a JOB which I don't need right now. And I don't see any ending to it... just generates more and more questions on the site. Can we end this and get a decent product out of the bat! ? I think we should address our problems/questions/requests to the authors, in Russia or Belarus, and stop trying to outguess them and provide ideas that have to be tested every time, regardless of comments from moderators with credentials. Let's make this work!! As long as you have MailSafe checked in your ZoneAlarm configuration, viruses like this one will be intercepted (not ALL types though - don't forget). Hello Julius, I don't know about you, but my Bat works perfectly well for 99.9% of what I want it to do. In fact, most of the time, that's 100%. I read and send many emails a day, and in addition to it having the features I want, it's the most trouble free client I've ever used. It has many advanced features, and yes - it's in constant development - - so now and then there will be little bugs. The alternatives - like OE for instance - were programmed with all sorts of lovely bloat and bugs, and once they got it to be as efficient as possible a virus propagation tool, they quit development. Now they just sit around and wait until each new vulnerability is exploited, and try to patch it (always remaining a few steps behind the exploiters of course). I think you see so many messages here because there are so many features that people are just learning about. There are many helpful people here. This list has helped me get so much more out of TB! than I could have imagined when I first started using it. Good morning Marck, --- Marck D Pearlstone / Thursday, 30.04.2002, 20:44:30 A problem using Opera at First Union Online -- I'm sorry --- ... Back to the lecture: every time I say this, someone takes exception to something I've said with comments like 'danger' is a bit harsh or I've used Folder templates for ages and it's never gone wrong for me. I agree - I've done it all the time too and it never went wrong (almost *gg*) ;-)) BTW - another mistake in such templates is to use the construct %TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED] without a %TO='' before it. So any pre-existing addresses are retained. I don't get this point Mark. Do you mean you should not use the %TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED] Macro in your Templates? Could you please explain! Here's a fact for you: it goes wrong. That's why I'm writing this message yet again. Can we end this and get a decent product out of the bat! ? I think we should address our problems/questions/requests to the authors, in Russia or Belarus, and stop trying to outguess them and provide ideas that have to be tested every time, regardless of comments from moderators with credentials. Julius, I've used a huge number of mailers, starting with mail in 6th Edition Unix and various Tenex mailers, and I always felt that Rand mh was the only true mailer. Long ago I transitioned to a Windows desktop, but nothing really was able to handle the large mail volumes I'm stuck with and the number of hats I need to wear. I stumbled on TB! by accident a couple of months ago, and so far it's as close to mh capability as I've ever found. I receive several hundred messages each day as postmaster hostmaster of something like 70 domains. A large percentage of those messages are spam. TB!, with it's templates and filters, makes all that at least tolerable and no other Windows product has done that for me. The tone and volume of the TB! mailing list is more reminiscent of an open-source project than of a commercial product. IMHO, that's *good*. The users of this product passionately care about it and are willing to evangelize and support it even if someone else is making some money from licensing it. The support you get on this mailing list is superb. Ask a question and you'll get *real* answers from *real* people who have actually experienced the same problems. You'll find people answer your questions before you even ask them :-) In fact, this is the first time I've posted to the list and I've received enormous amounts of support just by listening. Hang in there -- TB! is a great product! Hello Julius, Tuesday, April 30, 2002, 8:36:13 PM, you digitally penned the following: JS Hi there, List members , JS I signed-on and purchased my entry to the bat! about 2 weeks ago. JS I was expecting a reasonable new alternative to OE. I purposefully searched for a different email client to get away from OE or MS Outlook 2000 of which I had both installed on my system (still do) but I was extremely dis-satisifed with the security problems, lock-ups, and misc. other problems of these MS email clients. So I thought.. I will try Netscape Mail as a alternative right? Wrong... Bad choice... So I searched the internet... and some how I came across a link to Ritlabs/ The Bat! I read the info. Was impressed primarily by the security ( immunity) of TB! to certain types of virus and that it does not use the windows address book. Added to that was the macros and templates and so many other features so I downloaded the trial. I admit there is a learning curve to using TB! to its fullest potential and I am still learning. BUT I am here on this list because I want to be, not because I have to be. I enjoy the list, I am learning I believe, at a much faster pace because of it. AND I do believe that we get a much better response from the moderators, developers, programmers of TB! than one could ever expect from MS corp. or BG himself. Sure there were some questions on the list about the various versions. I think TB! settled those when they posted h as the official version on the main site. The SMIME bug complaint shows up on some systems and not on others. Seems to have a lot to do with other software that is running and installed most likely Norton AV. But at any rate. I am content with TB! and will not be seeking my money back... And after all the money I have shelled out to MS for OS upgrades and various programs a measely $35.00 US is nothing. I for one believe the program is well worth the money. Thanks TB!
