This is no standard option in TB, but it's very easy to create
shortcuts that perform the desired action.

I think it has lots of possibilities already.

The bigger the list, the easier to trigger non spam messages.

Create a spam filter based on an Address Book group, with a click on

I wouldn't like three spam folders. I hardly get spammed, because I'm

prevent spam.

That's a simple action that can be added to your spam filter

setting messages display

I'd like to be able to set the display (all messages, only unread
messages, &c.) on a per-folder basis, and have the settings stick for
each folder. Is this possible?

Almost as good would be the ability to use keyboard shortcuts to

I have been testing this along with common folders (using them for
archive with read filters). I am set up to mark as read in two seconds
in the preview pain. If the message is already marked as read, then
the filter does not pick it up. If I view a new message in the preview
pane, as soon as I move to the next message the e-mail is filtered.

The Bat has so many things, but I feel more concentration on spam features
is necessary.

1. The Bat needs a way to a import a large list of spam keywords and
phrases.

2. Yahoo has a one click "Block this sender" feature. The Bat needs a
one click "This is spam" feature.

3. A point system could be implemented. The Bat should count spam keywords,
and tally up the points. Then automatically direct them into folders like:
Inbox
Possibly Spam
Most likely Spam
Spam Trash

4. All spam should be "marked as read". I don't want to see the bat wings
flying for incoming spam emails.

It creates a much smaller archive file which, over the many thousands
of TB users who download upgrades, represents a huge saving in

Why setup a dummy account when TB! supports common folders, aliases, and
advanced filtering?

Why do you want to filter all mail into the unsorted mail box? Why not just
filter each list on the account it comes into, into the appropriate common
folder?

No need for this if setup like I mentioned in my email.

Ahhh... now you're getting somewhere. I still don't get the whole idea of the
"dummy account" thing.

Always useful to have a spam folder just to dump the rubbish in. Especially if
you deal with spamcop.net or manually do the abuse tracking.

See the thread on filtering that just popped up (Easy Spam Filtering)...
Something about the Sherlock method... eleminate all possible combinations, and
what you get left... must be spam (ie filter out your mailing lists, friends etc
put them into appropriate folders, and the final stuff will more than likely be
spam).

This is the Known filter pre-built into TB! now. That filter works straight
away for you. All you need to do is switch it on ;)

If you're doing that method, why not just put your filter on the "On Read"
event? Would save extra mouse clicks.

> Now go check your Spam folder and create additional filters on

That's the idea... make sure you're not catching good mail, and make sure you're
catching the bad mail that slipped in.

Now I see the idea of this idea. And yes... a fair bit of work. I still
believe that just setting the filters on the accounts is just as easy. Or you
might as well just contact all of your mail providers, and get them to forward
it to one account, then filter from there.

Might it be possible to incorporate this behavior into TB, so that when it discovers a

While the above works, it does seem like a lot to ask an end-user to do, especially

You have the same situation as I do, here is what I've learned
and here is the approach I am currently using.

1. Set up each account.

2. Set up a "dummy account" called Unsorted Mail. Just make up
some bogus email address and then under
Account//Properties//General//Options check "Ignore Check All
Requests." Also Check "Mark message as read only when it is
opened in a separate window."

3. Now for each of the "real" account go to Account//Sorting
Office/Filters//Incoming mail//New and create a filter which
operates on all mail. When it is done, hit Ctrl-C to copy it to
the clip board. Might want to move it ahead of the Known
filter just to be picky. Here is what is in my clipboard when I
hit Crtl-C:

BeginFilter
Name: All Mail
Active: 1
Source: \\None\Inbox
Target: \\Unsorted Mail\Inbox
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: 00
Actions:
AddGroups:
DelGroups:
ForwardTemplate:
ConfirmTemplate:
ReplyTemplate:
FwdAddr:
RedirectAddr:
NewAddr:
NewTemplate:
ExtCmd:
ExtFile:
ExtractDir:
ColourGroup:
AddAddrItems: afiFrom,
DelAddrItems: afiFrom,
HotKey: 0
IsOfColour:
SizeBigger: 0
SizeSmaller: 0
AgeOlder: 0
AgeNewer: 0
InAddrPos: 0
OutAddrPos: 0
InAddrGroups:
NoAddrGroups:
KillFile:
KillMethod: 0
SaveTemplate:
SndFile:
SysSound: 0
SoundTime: 0:00-0:00
AllowTime: 0:00-0:00
EndFilter

Now go to each account and open up Account//Sorting
Office/Filters//Incoming mail and hit Crtl-V to paste the filter
in.

Now when you check all your accounts all mail will be transfered
unread into the Inbox of Unsorted Mail.

Now Create a Folder outside of any account called Sorted Mail.
Under it create the various folders that meet your needs, such
as Mailing Lists, Personal Mail etc etc.

While you're at it, create a new folder outside of all accounts
called Spam.

Now go in to Unsorted Mail and start setting up all your filters
under Incoming Mail. Have a filter at the bottom of the list
called Spam which transfers all mail to Spam (ie all mail that
hasn't already been filtered.)

Make sure you have a filter called "Personal Mail" which checks
the recipient for being one of your email addresses. You can
use Alternatives for each account, or else you can set up an
address book group with your account in it with all your email
address listed in the entry.

Now with this set up, when you check your mail, all of the mail
for all accounts will go to Unsorted Mail/Inbox where it will
stay, unread. You can peek at it here if you want. To transfer
it to the storage folders, right mouse click and hit Re-filter
messages. Now the mail will all transfer from your Unsorted
Mail/Inbox to all your various folders.

Now go check your Spam folder and create additional filters on
the Unsorted Mail account to file anything you missed. Repeat.

Kind of a lot of work, but this scenario allows you to set up
all your email filters in one place rather than having to have
duplicate filters on each account.

Was TB the 'active' 'top' application on the desktop?
How much mail is being synced?
I usually have 30-40 msgs, and it only takes a couple of seconds to
update each time (but it is generally over a min *if* TB is not the
active application).

I think you can do that with X-Ray Mail Assistant with {in|out}going
mail. This program is anyway written for TB, as I know.

Not too difficult to do. Right mouse button click anywhere in the tree list,
select new, then common folder... call it mailing lists (or whatever). You now
have a common folder to start with. Repeat the procedure for each of your
lists. Next if you want those folders to appear under your mailing list
folders, use the move in/out function (CTRL SHIFT left/right arrow). You should
then be able to move it into the mailing lists folder.

For the filtering, Account - Sorting Offices - Select the Incoming folder, and
click new. Look on the right hand side, and you should know have the basics for
setting up rules. Give it a useful name, then choose where you want it to be
moved to, then set the rules down the bottom. If I've lost you here, click on
the help button, the images are pretty helpful in there.

> Also, if I have a mail list folder selected and I then click on the

Yes you can do this... they're called folder templates, but as I'm sure you're
about to find out... they're not recommended by some of the people on the list,
as it's easy to select the wrong folder. The easiest, and safest is the Address
Book Template. Create a new address book entry for each list. Include the
email addresses for the lists etc. Now click on the "New" tab you should see in
the address item page. Now create your template in there. If you want to use a
specific sig file, just use the macros listed under the macro button (again if
I've lost you, the help button is great here).

> I've looked at the FAQ and it doesn't appear to answer what I want to do.

I hope this is a start. I'm sure many more will post more technical details.
But for now, I have done that off the top of my head, as I am at home, and I
don't run Windows here.

Filtering mail lists

2002-05-13 Thread Ray Dawson

I'm new to The Bat and I'm trying to get it to behave as my email
application on another platform.

I belong to several mail lists - as a subscriber - and I have four
different email accounts which the various mail lists are spread about.

The way my present email app is set up, all four accounts are downloaded
at the same time and mail list items are filtered into the relevant box
(or folder) as they are downloaded.

I have a common folder to all the accounts called 'Mail Lists' and this
contains a folder for each list. Filtering is done on the Reply To header
and the mail goes into the relevant folder for that list.

Also, if I have a mail list folder selected and I then click on the
'Compose new email' icon, then the new email is set up with the correct
outgoing email address for that mail list and my correct email address
and sig file for that list.

How do I do all the above in The Bat? So far it's eluded me. The only
mail list help I can find refers to using The Bat as a server, which
isn't what I want. I've investigated the Sorting Office but can't quite
get my head around it - and also can't find a way of getting it to sort
on ALL accounts and not just the Inbox of individual accounts.

Any help greatfully received as I want to use the Bat, but I'm finding it
difficult to set up.

I've looked at the FAQ and it doesn't appear to answer what I want to do.

Cheers,

Ray D

I used to get these Access Violation errors after repeated use of
IE on a Win98SE installation with TB! V1.53d. IE has a known
(and severe) memory "leak" which can cause memory access errors
over time. Since I have upgraded to Win2K, these have all
disappeared. This machine has 1GB of RAM, so how can one "run
out" of system resources or memory with that much installed?

I haven't rebooted this system since I installed Win2K, which was
5 days ago. This is far better than my previous experience of 2
to 3 (forced) reboots a day on average with Win98SE!

The worst situation I faced in Win98SE was a cross connection of
messages with the wrong body text. Shutting down and rebooting,
then restarting TB! corrected the errors each time.

Much has been said about it not being "wise" to upgrade Win98SE
to Win2K, but I have had few problems, and all were cured by
simply re-installing the software affected. I only had to
uninstall and re-install one package, notably Roxio Easy CD
Creator. This was recommended, but I failed to do so, much to my
own peril! Live and learn!

Michael David> And, you are right - I should archive older messages. :)

Yes, as everyone should ;-)

I will not deviate further off-topic, but thought my experiences
with the OS change would be educational.

2002-05-13 Thread Michael David

Hi Roelof!

The messages that came back, after rebuilding the .tbi file were only
those that I had expected; no perviously filtered or deleted emails
showed up.

And, I'm pretty sure that all the mail disappeared immediately after
an Access Violation error, and this was not the result of my somehow
deleting the messages. I get Access Violation errors a few times each
day. I'd be interested to know if others are still getting these as
well.

I do compress all folders, from time to time. I've also not seen any
significant delay on larger folders, but this is a pretty fast
machine, so that may be why.

And, you are right - I should archive older messages. :)

That is one way to do it. You could also make use of the new $KNOWN$

someone who is contacted by unknown people on a regular basis.

Title: RE: Re[2]: Easier spam filtering

One easy way is to filer mail with your email address as the recipient.  Another more advanced technique I am starting to make use of is to add my multiple email addresses to my entry in my address book.  Since an address book entry can have multiple email addresses, this is handy.  You can add this address to a "Group" and using the advanced filtering options filter all email whose recipient address is in your "me" Group to a special folder.  This works slick, because it's easier to add new addresses to the Address Book list than to create a bunch of additional filter strings, at least for me :)  Most spam does not have your actual email address in the To field.

Oh I understand that, but all of those lists that get hit by spam have
to be publicly postable. For example [EMAIL PROTECTED] is a support
mailing list. We get at least 5 pieces of spam in there a day. And
some of the other ones need to be publicly postable too because of the
role of the list.

A good penultimate filter would be one that filters messages directly
addressed to you or your business.

A large quantity of spam aren't addressed directly to the recipient.

lol... ~12? hehehehe... lucky you ;) I processed 30 before I left for
work this morning... and that was between the hours of 12:30am and
5:00am :)

I know, which is why you can assign OR conditions to the filters...
not a separate filter then... well... not technically anyway.

Most of the time, a nice quick and easy way to get rid of a lot of
mail, is check to make sure you're in the TO field. I'm assuming most
new people would contact you directly, as with colleagues and such. A
lot of the spam I receive isn't even addressed to me... or doesn't
even come with a TO or CC field (magic ;)). Another way is to start
filtering on keywords... making sure not to filter on words you're
likely to receive in new people's emails. Common ones include
"credit", "debt", "mortgage", "adult", "xxx", "porn" etc. These are
okay unless you work in a credit agency that specializes mortgages ;)

That's an exceptional circumstance.

At present my filter setup catches 99.99% of my spam messages
(~12/day) and an occasional legitimate message.

Creating a new filter for each spam message is a tedious effort and
places a lot of overhead on message processing when so many filter
rules are present.

[regex-tutorial]: Part 1

2002-05-13 Thread Gerd Ewald

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi Bats(wo)men,

some days ago Daniel Grunberg asked for an English version of a
tutorial on regular expressions (TBTECH,
) which I published on
www.pro-privacy.de for the German beginners list.

First thing I did was a mail to Marck to find out whether there is
some interest in a translation.

Well, here it is. At least the first part. Marck checked the text and
transformed it into something you can read. Thank you, Marck! (My
translation was something between the following text and a translation
altavista did, hehe).

The whole tutorial will be subdivided in five parts. It will take some
time to prepare the next part, so you have to wait one or two weeks
for the next part to be published. Sorry! Anyway, we decided to
publish it in parts, so you can start learning regexian and you have a
chance to ask questions for better understanding.

Any part is posted to TBUDL using a special subject ("[regex
tutorial]") so that those of you who don't want to read it may define
a filter to kill the mail. Please use the same prefix in your subject
for any reply.

The tutorial is published on www.pro-privacy.de (look there for
"special") and on Marck's official FAQ at
http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html

Ok, that's it. Let's start. I hope you will enjoy the tutorial :-)

START OF PART 1 ==

1. Introduction

Whenever I came across something interesting in a mail that was
created with TheBat! like "cleaned" Subject-strings or automagically
deleted PGP-lines, I would ask in one of the mailing lists: "How did
you do that?". Quite often I would receive a reply like "You will need
a regex for that!" And sometimes the result was something like:

%QUOTES="%SETPATTREGEXP=""(?is)(-BEGIN PGP
SIGNED.*?\n(Hash:.*?\n)?\s*)?(.*?)(^(- --|--\n|-BEGIN PGP
SIGNATURE)|\z)""%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=""%text""%SUBPATT=""3"""

This is only a simple example of those cryptic looking combinations of
TB!-Macros and regular expressions which are simply called "regex" by
the TB-experts. To me it seemed a random sequence of characters; as if
a cat walked across my keyboard. Awkward, arbitrary and cryptic, that
at least was my impression until Januk Aggarwal (special thanks to
him) gave me a short introduction to regex at TBTECH and my workmate
Alfred Rübartsch gave me a copy of Jeffrey Friedls excellent book
"Mastering Regular Expressions".

Although I entered the fascinating world of Regular Expression with
the help of these two, I am still not an expert in the "regexian"
language. Anyway, as an advanced beginner, I have dared to write this
tutorial to hopefully explain some things and give a good start in
"Regular Expressions" to other beginners.

This tutorial is meant to bring you into closer contact with the regex
topic. Well, let's see how it works; let's see whether we will be able
to explain the "regex"-example above by the time we come to the end of
this tutorial.

2. Regular Expressions

2.1. What does "Regular Expression" mean?

Regex are not only used in TB! You can find them in quite a lot of
different UNIX-tools (e.g. grep), in some programming languages like
PERL (Practical Extraction and Report Language, sometimes called
'Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister' ) and even my editor
UltraEdit uses them.

Laura Lemay wrote in her book "PERL in 21 days" that the term "Regular
Expression" makes no sense at first sight (to be honest: even at
second sight it still makes no sense to me), because these are not
real expressions and furthermore no one really can explain why they
are "regular"! Well, let's ignore this; let's simply accept that the
term "Regular Expression" has its origin in formal algebra and that
they are indeed part of Mathematics.

The easiest and most convenient way to define "Regular Expression" is
to say: "They are search patterns to match characters in strings."

Those of you who have tried to find files using the DOS command line
or the search function in the Explorer may have used patterns like:

dir *.doc
copy *.??t c:\temp

These examples show patterns that consist of letters, stars, question
marks and other characters to define which files should be listed or
copied. In the first example only files that have the suffix "doc"
should be listed. In the second example only files that have a
three-letter suffix and a "t" as last character in the suffix should
be copied.

But these regex are merely wildcards! In no way as mighty as "Regular
Expressions". One can't compare them to real regex, which offer much
more than wildcards for characters.

3. Simple Patterns

To explain some regular expressions and to understand the examples
given in this tutorial we have to define how the regex will appear. I
will envelope the regular expression in quotation marks ("). If you
want to test the regex you will have to copy the part between the
"-characters. Testing regular expressions? Yes, sure, this is
possible.

You have to downlo

The simplest and most effective spam filter is the "Sherlock" (process
of elimination) method as originally suggested by Steve Lamb and
explained by Allie Martin:

- ---8<
The easiest way to get rid of spam is by first excluding all mail that
is legitimately for you and then simply considering the rest spam.
With this method you hardly ever get legitimate mail ending up in the
spam folder or spam ending up in the inbox.

Order is important since TB processes filters from the top down.

First create filters for all your regular legitimate mail.

Then create a filter to place all other messages addressed to you in
the inbox or some other created 'sundry' folder.

Then create the spam filter, which should be the last filter in the
list. Set it up to place the rest of messages that do not satisfy any
of the other previous filter rules in a spam folder.

Typically this will be:

String: e, location: Kludges, Presence: Yes.

With this setup I assure you that your inbox will be clean. Very few
spammers address messages directly to you and that's the reason why
this method works so well. If the message is not from x, y, z, etc or
it's not addressed directly to me, then it MUST be spam. :)

You can very likely add some general spam filters for spam messages
addressed to you based on subject content.

I would also recommend that you make use of the spamcop service
http://spamcop.net. After a few months of use, incoming spam has
dropped from five per day to one or two per week. When spammers
realize that your address is one of those responsible for getting them
kicked off their current ISP, they soon take it off the list!

Message list highlight - Newbie

2002-05-13 Thread John Harned

TB! seems to properly order messages in folder message
lists, but the highlight doesn't automatically go to the top
of the order selected. Also, when I move from folder to
folder it seems that if there is more than one page of
messages, the list is always scrolled well down into the
list. Is there some way to force the highlight to go to the
top of the order which has been selected? I'm using 1.60c.

Thanks, John

Re: All the meail in my inbox has disappeared!

2002-05-13 Thread Dean

I can say I just had this happen to me. I did not delete, however I was in
the process of saving attachments, posts, to my cd. I was also going to
copy the entire bat program and had therefore just copied/exported the Rit
entries from the registry.

I rebooted after I was all done and wanted to get my regular programs
established in a clean start. I started up the bat and whoosh gone was the
TBI of the Inbox. The TBB was there with 27 mgs but the TBI showed only
2 megs. I did what was mentioned by Roelof and had to reboot again. I
still didn't have anything showing up in the inbox - Until I started
looking through all of the other folders, which seemed to load very slowly.
I then went back to the main inbox and after a slow start everything
 re-appeared.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused a problem was; I went
looking at other mail as the message center was downloading. For some
reason I run into The program freezing and now this empty Inbox occurrence.

Do want to thank Roelof for the suggestion, was perfect timing for this to
come up;)

Since all of your messages that were deleted (or filtered to other
folders) should have become visible too, you should delete them again
and select from the menu: Folder - Compress all folders.
That diminishes the size of your inbox and prevent the problem from
occurring again.
Might your inbox still be excessively big, I'd suggest that you start
archiving the messages into different folders and afterwards compress
your inbox again. I don't know what's the actual limit for the folder
contents in TB, but I have found for myself that large folders take
lot more time to be opened than smaller ones. I use 5000 msg's (or 20
MB, whatever comes first) as a useful limit.

At least some options work with most lists I'm subscribed to. It
mainly depends on the list owner and the software used, which headers

I would be reluctant to change drivers, for the same reason as above.
I wonder if the mouse wheel button problem started at the same time as
when the size of the scrollbar had a problem being proportional to the
length of a message.

It may well have. All I know is that v1.5x does not have the problem,
while all 1.6x versions do. From where I sit all 1.6x versions are buggy,
and reverting back to the 1.5x versions is just not an option for me. I do
though like to follow TB's development and see what happens. Who knows...
one day RITLabs may fix the bug. ;o)

 Krister,
While you are reading this msg go to specials|Mailinglist and you will
find its not grayed out anymore.
This function is only available if the right list headers are present in
an email, which is the case with all the emails in this list and some
 other lsit as well.
I think its a neat function.

If TB is the 'only' Program that is affected... and only the 1.6x versions,
as 1.5x does not have that problem... then in my estimation it 'is' TB and
not my System. I have never had any problems relating to scrolling in any

Plainly wrong.
Have a look at 'Account' / 'Properties' / 'Options' / 'Mark message as read
only when it is open in a separate window' ... is it checked? If so the
message will never get marked as read in preview pane and therefore the
filter will never be applied.
If not, the message will be marked read (after timeout set in account
options) and on focus change _away from message_ the read-filters will be
checked and applied if necessary.

I'm working this way the whole day on my administrative mails I get from
several servers and it works for sure.

RMR> even if it mark the message as read.

Read-filters will _never_ get applied when the message is manually marked
read _AND_ in above mentioned account settings a time out is given for
automatically 'mark read'.
If this time out is off the filters will be applied immediately if you set
the message to 'read' (e.g. via +M)

So ... all in all a really complex thing of several conditions and
possibilities, but nevertheless working as expected :-)

You have to highlight a message coming from a mailing-list before going
into this menu. This feature will read the "mailing list management
informations" that are contained in the header of the message. Those are
informations that the mailing list server adds to the headers of each
posted message and that actually gives the addresses to subscribe,
unsubscribe, or post a message to the concerned list. It's a pretty nice
feature that automates the dealing with mailing lists...

> 2: What does the "smartBat" do?

I still have no clue about that... I think it's a kind of "always on"
memo or something, but I don't know why it's contained in TB...
