I'm wondering why one would want a single trash can? Just for

Hi Krister,

KE I'm beginning to get curious about this spamcop thang. Is it a service
KE you'll have to pay for?

No, it's a free reporting service although there are some things you
get with a paid account. Personally, I've never seen that reporting to
Spamcop does much. Most of the big spammers are on Verio, Exodus or
some Asian ISP. Verio Exodus are spam-tolerant don't do anything
other than wag their fingers at their customers and say take that
name off your list. 2 months later it's back on. The Asian spamhauses
of course just keep pumping their crap out no matter what. Click to
remove is another term for Click to verify.

I have seen some small time spammers get TOSd through SpamCop and I'm
sure their blacklist is worthwhile but it's not going to reduce your
spam if you report things to them. IMHO.

resending folder list question

2002-08-14 Thread Alaeddin Muntasser

Hello Peter,
Have you had checked 'Leave message base intact' when deleting folders
shown as 'Common folders'? If not: it's quite reasonable their
 disappeared.

I choose the leave messages intact and deleted the common folders.
Unfortunately it deleted my personal folders as well.

Only empty folders are duplicated? No other?

All folders are duplicated actually.

If it disappears from account too again (albeit I don't know any single
reason why it should), try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L at once when
finished with deleting all 'outside account' folders.
This should recover the folders to be shown in accounts.

This did not work either. Only sent mails and trash folder remained. after
restarting TheBat the folders were duplicated in the common folders and were
also empty.

I would agree with this (as a paying user of SpamCop). It is probably
helpful to report things to SpamCop so that open relays and proxies get
identified, but I found that I had far more success at terminating
spammer's accounts when I did the investigating and reporting myself.

I now have a set of Kill filters that I use alongside Selective
Download, so around 40 messages a day are being deleted on the server,
and the remaining 1 or 2 I report via SpamCop.

There are a range of services offered by spamcop (see www.spamcop.net for
details). There is a free no frills reportting service which just allows you to
report spam. If you like it enough, and wish to support it, there is a paid
reporting service which gives you presidence over non-paid users. Spamcop also
offers other services such as mail addresses which come pre-filtered for you.
Take a look at the website, and see what the author offers.

By this do you mean Continuing processing with other filters on the
Options tab of the Sorting Office window? The reason I ask is really
one of trying to understand what you are doing. In other words maybe I
can do it better. From what I understand of TB's filters they really are
all in combination to a degree because precedent is set from the highest
to lowest on the list of filters created.

jr Where we part company is that anyone who is
jr $KNOWN$ that *doesn't* belong in a subject, list
jr or personal folder ends up in $KNOWN$ or Inbox,

I probably should read the Spam threads in more detail. I just set up
Marck's SpamCop filter in Active Manual only mode, so anything in
my Inbox is reviewed for Spam. If Spam Ctrl+Alt+S to generate message to
SpamCop. From some of the Spam threads I've read people create filters
on certain characters in the subject to filter to trash. IIRC they
also use certain domain names to identify spam, and filter to trash.

I don't get much spam. This is probably because in newsgroups I use a
dead end email address, and because most of the mail lists that I belong
you are required to be a member and have rules against spam. Either
these are the reasons, or I'm just lucky.

AntiVirus: Cannot unpack message (wrong MIME format?)

This would suggest a problem at the other end. They appear to have a
mail scanner running in conjunction with qmail, and it is unable to
read into the MIME format. As for why it cannot read text/plain, I
have no idea, maybe a bad installation, or a corrupt scanning service.
If the problem persists, try saving the message as unix .msg
somewhere, opening it up, and deleting the mime headers:

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

MIME-Version isn't really needed unless you are encoding anything, and
text/plain and 7bit are assumed unless otherwise specified according
to some document somewhere (I think a W3C doc or an RFC somewhere).

Once you have deleted it, import it back into TB!, and then send it,
see if that helps.

Re: One trash can?

2002-08-14 Thread jan rifkinson

Hi Greg.

At 10:51 AM on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 you [GS]
wrote the following about One trash can?:

jr My filters are in combination so that they
jr filter out folks I know by inclusion in my AB
jr [...]

GS By this do you mean Continuing processing
GS with other filters on the Options tab of the
GS Sorting Office window? [...] trying to
GS understand what you are doing. In other words
GS maybe I can do it better.

Let's hope so. I'm always up for something
  better. To answer your question[s]:

Only in 2 cases do I use 'continue filtering'.

The first thing on my filter list is a filter
that identifies my own outgoing msgs that come
back to me, i.e. from a list server. These are
filtered to a specific color so I ignore them
visually, then TB! continues processing they
are dropped into their appropriate group folder.

Following that are all my specific filters for
Mail lists, personal, etc. These filters
identify those msgs drop them in their
appropriate folders, i.e. TBUDL -- TB! folder,
  etc.

Following that is my $KNOWN$ filter which
identifies everything in my AB [I keep only one
w a lot of groups as I find that more convenient
than multiple ABs]. This is 2nd time I use
continue processing. So, for example, if I get
a msg from someone who does not have a folder,
it passes thru the first 2 levels gets picked
up by $KNOWN$ where it stays. $KNOWN$, Inbox, Hi
Priority personal msgs are sent to the ticker
  for my attention.

Following that are my spam filters which
identify most junk send them to the common
trash basket. If a piece of spam ends up in my
Inbox I shoot that off to SPAM COP manually via
a filter I constructed. Otherwise I found myself
spending too much time sending off all my daily
  spam msgs to SPAM COP.

I identify these spam filters in 2 ways:

First - Those msgs that aren't addressed to me
[remember all list msgs known msgs have been
  filtered already].

Second - by gen'l subject matter. Ex: gambling,
sex, travel, earn, etc. Then I use alternative
words that apply to those subjects as they came
in to me before I had all these filters. Pretty
soon I have a small dictionary of typical words
for each subject. All of them go to the common
  trash can.

In options, under the Message List, I set
Display time for today's msgs for t [time].
Current week as set ddd,t [day time]. Anything
beyond that is d mmm yy, t day, month, yr,
time. In this way its very easy to identify
today's spam review it -- or at worst,
  yeterday today's spam list.

Last but not least, I have one other filter
which just sits in the list for people I don't
want to talk to which auto sends a reply that
tells that I don't want to talk to them, that I
haven't read their email that it has been
deleted -- all of which is true. Currently it is
  only one name in it.

And finally there is the anti-virus plug in that
hopefully filters *all* virii to the quarantine
folder where I delete it, immediately followed
  by a compress purge folder.

GS From what I understand of TB's filters
GS they really are all in combination to a degree
GS because precedent is set from the highest to
GS lowest on the list of filters created.

Yes, this is correct that's what I've tried to
  do.

  HTH

Bug with Exclusion in Filter?

2002-08-14 Thread Jonathan Angliss

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi All,

I've been working with a filter recently that adds contacts from a
list to an address book group so that if they reply off list, I can
reply to them, and use the same template as that used on the list (I
like consistency). The problem is, I need to exclude my own email
address otherwise things go rather odd when I try replying to myself
on the list (ie when I correct myself). What was suggested (by Marck
I think) is that I create a special group, and in the filter specify
the user mustn't exist in that group, if they are not, then add them
to the address book (if they are mailing to the list). The problem is
this, to make this work, I decided to add an address book item to the
exclusions group, and add to that item all my addresses/aliases. But
as soon as I added multiple addresses in my item, the filter
completely ignored the entry. Here is the details:

BeginFilter
Name: TheBat Address List
Active: 1
Source: \\Certiflex Dimension\Inbox
Target: \\Certiflex Dimension\Inbox
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AltSet:1: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AltSet:2: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Actions: faAddAddress,faoContinueProcessing,faoAdvAddressOut,faoAdvNoGroups
AddGroups: TB Lists
AddAddrItems: afiFrom,
DelAddrItems: afiFrom,
NoAddrGroups: Exemptions
EndFilter

(I've snipped out the parts I thought were unnecessary such as
replytemplate, so this is my snipped down filter). I realise my
filters are a little odd, and match on a header (return-path) that
some people don't use, but it is working fine, and I've not had any
mismatches. Now for my Address book item for me:

Name: Jonathan Angliss
Groups: Exemptions
Addresses: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[snipped some more as I think you get the idea]

Now if I remove all but the top item, the filter works fine, but if I
have the other items, the filter breaks, and it adds me to the TB
Lists group. Would this be a bug or a feature of the program? And
do I need to go ahead and create several address book items for all my
addresses?

ctrl+alt+shift+L problem

I lost some folders during account/ISP changes. I tried to do a
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L to recover them but that sequence actually locked my

since my system had been running for a while so I tried again. Same
results. When locked the caps lock light, scroll lock light and power
light on my keyboard blink in sequence. I checked my system for any
other programs that may set up system-wide key macros and there are
none. The best I can figure this sequence is controlled by system
hardware.

Go to the Shortcut Editor
(AltF12 or View - Edit shortcuts)
In the section 'Folder pane pop-up' you'll find the hotkey for 'Find
Lost Folders' here you can alter the hotkey.

I don't know why I don't see this possibility in the pop-up screen of
the folder pane

Removable drive

2002-08-14 Thread Wayne Black

Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 6:31 PM (Pacific ST) GMT -0800

Greetings TheBat! Users,

Is it true that version 2.x of TheBat will have all files needed in
the main directory? In other words, no need for a registry file? If
this is the case it would be possible to install and run TheBat from a
removable drive such as a USB key drive. Think of it... your email
program and all messages in your pocket. Just plug it in at a friends
house, at work or at home. Any computer with a USB port which is most
of them less than three to five years old.

It would be great security too since TheBat would not even reside on
your computer. Take a look at http://www.usbkeydrive.com and tell me
if this would be possible and how practical it would be.

I think of this because of the new PocoMail Portable Edition. I hope
it will work with v2 of TheBat.

Oh, you filter on the bounce addresses. Another smart idea I haven't
seen before. :-)

JA Now for my Address book item for me:

JA Addresses: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

JA[EMAIL PROTECTED]

JA Now if I remove all but the top item, the filter works fine, but if I
JA have the other items, the filter breaks,

Let's see. If the filter works if only the first address is in your
addressbook, the filter conditions and actions should be correct. The
function check whether in AB seems to choke on multiple addresses in
the same AB entry.

But what is this:

JA AddAddrItems: afiFrom,
JA DelAddrItems: afiFrom,

Are you adding and deleting the From address to/from the filter at the
same time? Or am I reading this wrong?

I have not heard this, and frankly, I doubt it. The registry keys that
TB uses are located in HK_Current_User and the very reason for this
is that many people use TB on the same computer with someone else, and
they use different ID's. So they most likely have different settings
in their TB and use the advantages of HKCU to its full extent.

WB It would be great security too since TheBat would not even reside on
WB your computer.

I am not sure about this. If all someone needs is to take away the USB
drive, and can then plug it in any computer, it doesn't sound secure
to me. I feel much safer having depend TB on my PC, over which I have
more physical control than over a portable drive. The bad boy has to
either sit on my own chair (he who doth that is doomed), carry the
computer away (less likely than carrying a USB drive) or gain access
through the internet (hacking / trojans etc) which I hope to prevent.

No, I think it would be a lot less security if TB resided completely
on a USB drive. Unless you lock the drive into a safe, right there
with your diamond rings and the cash money the IRS doesn't know about.

Hello Cricket,

Thank you for your answer, it's just not exactly what I was looking for
(Sudib's was).
To give you some background information:
I receive a message from a friend from his work and want automaticaly reply
to his privat mail address. So,
Message in:

Now I have set in my address-book a specific Reply template for this

Message out:

I already thanked Sudip yesterday (in an off-list message) for giving me the
answer I was looking for. The answer he gave me is working fine.

Again, thanks.
Kind regards,
Erik
