I am still happy with TB as JS is but fully expect this feature to be added at some point. To JS me, the whole essence of TB cries for this type of manipulative JS power to be given to mail power users. The issue is the ability to modify something someone wrote in a way they never intended. One should NOT be able to modify a message without indicating PLAINLY that the original writer's message has been changed. The inability to easily do so is good for the 'sanctity' of the original poster's intentions. You can try using the MAPI interface to get access to parts of Exchange, but I'm not sure that Public Folders are included in that functionality. And you'd have to install Outlook anyway, to get the right MAPI version. Speaking of which, Microsoft changes MAPI almost on a whim - it is notorious amongst Windows programmers for being both buggy AND something of a moving target. NNTP would strip all the form information, so any custom folders would become useless. And it would require The Bat! to get newsreading capabilities. And HTTP would require Ritlabs to build a web browser - I'd rather they stuck to developing their already excellent mail client, myself. :-) PS At that time it didn't seem possible, has anything changed ?? Not really, and I doubt that it will - for the reasons stated above. By the way, this isn't an official answer - but as I have some experience with Exchange Server, I thought I'd chip in with my views and knowledge on the subject. I'll part with an opinion - Public Folders are probably something Microsoft wishes they could drop. They only put the feature in to Exchange Server to try and compete with Lotus Notes/Domino, and soon found that the architecture of Public Folders (and Exchange on the whole) was rather inadequate for that purpose. They've made several changes to Public Folders over the years (most notably in forms design and distribution), each of which has required companies to re-work any solutions they created with them. As a result, few companies use public folders beyond basic discussion facilities - which could easily be handled by other means. Most Exchange professionals I've ever dealt with dislike Public Folders, but it's a feature that MS have to continue offering because of all the hoopla they made when it first came out. Congratulations - you're dealing with a Microsoft Mistake every day! :-) -- Best regards, Philipmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v1.62i on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 3 Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: A way to modify _incoming_ mail
Hi Spike, Friday, February 28, 2003, 4:33:24 PM, you wrote: The issue is the ability to modify something someone wrote in a way they never intended. I would say that this is not always the case. In most cases I want to modify incoming message the reason is that the message is already modified and I just want to `restore' it to the state it was before that modification. Why was it modified in the first place? The most frequent source of such modifications -- for me -- is some kinds of mail filtering proxies and/or applications. Take, for example, perfect in all other aspects, despammed.com service. This is a SPAM filtering mail forwarding service. It adds `[despammed]' tag to the subject of any mail which have passed through that system. Well, actually that means that when I receive the message it is no identical to the `original' one. Why do you think an author of the message would mind if I'll strip that `[despammed]' tag? Of course if that would be the only despammed.com who adds its own tags, the problem would ceased to exist since I could contact despammed.com developers and ask them to provide an option to turn that behavior off. But this is so common to mail-lists, forum mail engines etc. to supply all kinds of the tags, that it is rather impractical to insist on modifying all of them. I think it is much more productive to adjust my own mail software for that purpose. Of course if it is possible to hack The Bat! up so that for every mail satisfying given criteria it would: 1) Export the message to external file. 2) Invoke the script provided passing the file exported. 3) Import the modified (or should I rather say `restored') mail back, replacing the `original' message. Well, I don't see any difference then except for some extra steps required compared to accomplishing the same task with imaginary built-in support. -- Pavel Kuznetsov Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: A way to modify _incoming_ mail
Oh no, I can't help myself... I hope you are wrong about the feature being added. You will never convince me of a legitimate reason to modify incoming messages. E-Mail is frequently used as evidence in court cases. TF But only if sender's mid and receiver's mid show the same message, TF isn't it? I can modify any message by exporting/editing/importing it. I do not believe any E-mail client should have that function, without a big red flag printed across the message. TF I am all for that red flag, or a small icon indicating that the TF message was edited, which I don't have in the current version. ;-) Surely an answer (if there is to be one) is to add, rather than modify? If each stored message was given _extra_ fields: Subject(modified) and Body(modified), these could then be assigned to the default view by those who want them. These fields by default would only be pointers to the original fields unless modified via macros or manual edit. Just a thought, I'll shut up now. -- Nick Using TheBat!: v1.61 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

It should be fairly easy to do with PowerPro. I'll try it later or during the weekend. Allie was kind enough to write a filter for my needs and he gave me some side tips as well how to incorporate PowerPro into the mix. This was some time ago. But I'll dig up a link to the original in the archives if I get the chance. I didn't want to get too specific as my needs for editing incoming messages likely differ from others'. But here goes just so you understand why I'd edit a message at all. I receive many messages per month dealing with content I have to further process. As I do process this content, I like to edit the subject line (numbering and date of completion) for organizational purposes. Occasionally, I also have to refer to the originals. I can do this quickly after organizing the original messages sequentially and by date. The way I accomplish this admittedly small yet important task is to drag the original into the Outbox, double-click it, edit the subject note the original date of receipt, save it, and finally drag it back into its proper folder. It's not a particular difficult process and works fine. But it is a nuisance when dealing with multiples. Other than that, on occasion, I may take a personal message and rename the subject in the same manner. In fact, I have done this with the TB lists before to save a copy of someone's RegEx template idea for later reference. Of course I'd leave the original intact within one of the TB folders here in case I needed to reply or quote it some time in the future. -- Best regards, James [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.stamp-co.com The Bat! v.1.63 Beta/7 Windows XP build 2600 AMD Athlon 1Ghz 1.0 Gb RAM Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: upgrade from 1.51 to 1.62i
Thomas- I went from version 1.53 to 1.62 and had to move the folders myself. I remember an earlier upgrade where the files were modified automatically as part of the process, but I misremember the versions. You may well be right about some intermediate version taking care of moving the files - I usually hold off upgrading until there's some compelling reason to do so, so I haven't paid much attention to minor (and some major) versions. The only reason I'm using beta4 now is so I can do some development work on antispam filters. TF I thought there was always this MAIL folder, but I may be wrong. I TF never noticed anything when I upgraded, so I believe there was one TF version in between that automatically moved the messages. Have you any TF idea when the new folder structure started? The version introducing it TF must have an internal conversion tool, so Alexander should upgrade TF from 1.51 to that version, and then from that version to 1.62i, and TF everything will be automatic. -Mark Wieder Using The Bat! v1.63 Beta/4 on Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2 -- Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Please reply to the message you're reacting to and not to another message in the same thread. The more I read your response, it looks like a remark caused by your own message, not mine. With TB's threading options it's possible to follow a thread correctly, so please use it as intended. -- Groetjes, Roelof Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

MJ I'm still curious to know if other users have found some kind of MJ workaround, or if perhaps the TB people are working on a fix. What other applications do you have running on your system? Have you tried shutting down all other apps, including anti-virus agents, firewall software, windowblinds or any other shell enhancing software, and then trying to exit TB!? Re: Ritlabs download
Hello Thomas, Friday, February 28, 2003, 9:14:26 PM, you wrote: Later, I tried downloading with Sleipnir, and it got the whole file. TF I don't know what is Sleipnir, Sleipnir is a Chinese Web browser. Very cool looking. Colourful, though busy interface. TF but it does seem like there was a TF problem with IE, don't you think? Yeah. I just supposed there's probably technical knowledge around here to suggest what type of thing might happen. I certainly downloaded TB successfully with IE before. What type of event can a download manager keep track of that IE can't? Does IE simply take what it receives from the web server? Or is it doing some poor management or error correction, and failing to report that? Since it happened several times, error correction doesn't make much sense though. -- Best regards, Adam Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: distaster strikes :-(
Hello Marck, Friday, February 28, 2003, 5:47:25 PM, you wrote: JF Yesterday I got into some problems with my Bat: I suddenly have to submit JF username and password. No matter what username I type in, the answer is JF always 'user xyx does not exist'. JF No idea why my Bat all of a sudden requires me to log on. Who JF can help me out? MDP First, either your account (or one of the others) has been relegated MDP to User or a password has been assigned to it. I work alone on my PC, nobody ever touches it. I didn't change the settings. 'All of a sudden' it happened. :-( Not a very good answer, but at least an honest one MDP If any of your accounts is a User then you will have to log in to MDP the account you want to use at the start. The Username it wants is MDP actually the name of the account. If you can type that and get in MDP you can modify the settings in the Network and Administration. MDP If a password has been assigned and you don't know what it it, you MDP will have to sacrifice the account configuration settings and delete MDP (or rename) the ACCOUNT.CFG to get in. You will then have to MDP recreate the account settings from scratch - not so happy :-(. Quite. :-( I have 5 accounts. If I open one of my lesser accounts that way, would I be able to change the settings? Or do I really have to mess up my main account? -- Best regards, Josmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
