I TB! initiates the connection for me, i.e., when I try to send or

You can create all those operators using what's there. With the 'AND"

it whether to filter if the string is present or if it's not present
through the 'presence' option. It seemed pretty clear to me once I

which is far from clear and is undocumented, mainly the flexibility one

of the new comers who have an interest in this issue.

Tracer does make a point that this topic has been extensively discussed
on more than one occasion previously. Looking this up in the

I personally tend to agree here. Ritlabs is small. If they lose focus it
could be a bad move on their part. Supporting news reading may prove to
be distracting because once it's supported the userbase will start
requesting news-reader features/enhancements. This may very well slow down
the development/enhancement of TB! as a premiere specialist e-mail
client.

t Also its likely more a beta subject...

I tend to disagree here. TBUDL subscribers should be free to discuss
issues as this when the occasion arises, although prolonged discussions
are discouraged.

Not all fonts support all the charsets. TB! tends to use the same

character support of the sender. If your default font doesn't support
the senders charset, then TB! will automatically switch to one that does

different sizes at the same 'pitch', it may look as if the 'pitch' has

Yeah, especially when it doesn't work with the folder view window. The
folder view windows tend to be neglected. Features seem to be tested
with the preview pane only. If I turn off the message autoview, viewing
and creating memos is broken. I cannot view memos from the folder view
window in that hitting CTRLSHIFTI annoyingly brings the main TB!
window in focus with a broken, open, memo window that will not show
anything or create any memos. :-(

Also, since it's implementation, colour groups have not work
properly with folder view windows. When new messages are added to the
folder, the coloured messages change to the default colours. I have to
close and reopen the folder to get the colour coding back to what it
should be. For the ticker virtual folder, there's no colour coding at

CM I'm trying to remember ... I think Pegasus had a similar thing to

SHIFTCTRLI for TB!? It acts as a toggle switch for the memo

That is potentially dangerous especially for those who use the %To

AG Great! Figured that out finally. Now, is there any way to get the
AG cursor to start on the subject line for folders where the To: is
AG always going to be the same?

No. There was a heated discussion about a point similar to this, deep in
TBUDL history, the contention being that the cursor should placed
exactly where the user defines it in the templates, instead of appearing
in the To: field when composing new messages. There was one camp who
felt it was logical that the cursor be initially placed in the To: field
since mail is composed in an orderly manner with the user filling out
the header info in a stepwise fashion and then finally typing the
message. When presented with an argument as yours, the refute was that
the application should not assume that you've filled in all the To:
header information and that the user may have the desire to add
additional addresses. The other school thought this was a baloney
argument and that the cursor should be placed where the user specifies.
Afterall, it's the user who's in charge right? I'm of the latter school.
BTW. :-) The counter to this argument was that, yes, the cursor is
placed where you want it to after you've dealt with the headers in a
logical orderly fashion. :-)

Anyway, the whole discussion which culminated in an argument got us
nowhere. We're still at this juncture today.

My guess is that you have 'Check the selected message against this rule'

At the end, so that it doesn't interfere with the formatting of your

don't insert information in the message body at the end of the message.

One notable exception is the %quotestyle macro which should precede the

Quite a few users use the %To macro in their new message templates for

I think what you wish to do is to forward the messages as MIME

open the forward template editor. Enable the option "Use MIME standard

For the messages you wish to 'redirect', select them and hit the forward

Depends on what you call a large number. If you mean 5-10 thousand
messages ... yes. I personally have folders with message bases
containing up to 10,000 messages. They work OK, with no loss of data so
far. I've been using the same installation since initially using TB!
since March 1999. I haven't had to restore from a backup.

WB Does it have a limit to the number of messages in a folder or the

As far as I know, there's no limitation on the number of messages one
can store in a folder or the number of entries one can keep in the
address book.

I see that you're using version 1.44 and, AFAIK, the answer to that is
no. This is the same as well for the latest release, version 1.45.

The latest beta does support this via the %Comments macro. For
further information and beta discussions you'd have to join our beta

There's also another little app built for The Bat! called X-Ray, which
you could use to insert additional header lines.

JP For the computer challenged amongst us (present company excepted of
JP course g), can you post a copy of these filters? Thanks.

Kind of an impractical request but let me see if my illustration will
make you better understand. For one to understand and implement this
method, it needs to be realised that when a message is filtered, it
isn't subject to subsequent filtering by filter rules that are after the
rule which matched the message (unless you enable the 'continue
processing with other filters' switch).

This is how my filtering looks schematically:

- PGPKey request filter

- Discussion list filters here.

- Filter rules for messages from friends

- Filter rules for messages from family

- Filter rules for messages from news and other promo sites to which I
  have subscribed.

All that's left to be filtered are messages addressed directly to me
that are from individuals or groups for which I haven't created filters
and messages being BCC'd to me.

Let's continue with the filtering:

- I now create a non-specific filter rule to match messages with 'To:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in the headers. By now, 98-99% of the messages left
  are spam.

Last but not least:

- I create a non-specific filter rule to match *any* message and move
them to the spam folder. I use the filter string 'e' since the letter
'e' appears in all messages. One could simply make the filter delete
the message but this may lead to an occasional legitimate message that
has been BCC'd to you being lost.

TB! however has per-folder settings to purge folders which is nice. I
have my spam folder set to keep messages no longer than a week.

Font offer

Hi,

For you guys out there who may be running high resolutions I have a font
for you.

I'm presently running at a 1600x1200 resolution using large fonts and at
size 11, Lucida Sans Typ is great since it's nicely anti-aliased at this
size. If you're using lower screen resolutions, you may have to use a
prohibitively high font size to take advantage of anti-aliasing (font
smoothing). The font looks pretty crappy to me when not smoothed but you
may try it anyway if you like and make your own decision. :-)

Note however, that although Lucida Sans Typ is a fixed width font it
will not appear in the list of fixed width fonts. A registry hack works
beautifully. "Simply" change the following value to Lucida Sans Typ
after installing the font:

HKCU/Software/RIT/The Bat/Editor/Font

(For those who may not realize, you need to close TB! before doing this
and then restart it afterwards).

You may download the font here:

http://www.geocities.com/acmartin.geo/lucida.zip

Not with TB!. All I'm using that's from the program is the great tagline

remember the name of the file. It uses a non-standard extension but it's
a text file. There are not many files to the app so you can go through
the likely ones. It may have been tag.trt or something so.

Just convert the name to a .txt extension, and point TB!'s %Cookie macro
to it.

KR Do you know of any way to incorporate the specific-date feature into
KR TB cookies?

I'm not sure what you mean. If you simply mean inserting the date, TB!
already does this with the %date macro. TB!'s template macros does
everything this app does and more making it redundant and this is why I
uninstalled it. I only scrapped it, taking the tagline file and modified
it, deleting the taglines I disliked and adding ones I found elsewhere.

ML suggest you to save those messages (in Becky) as .eml or .msg files

ML them as such.

It could be that the blank line between the kludges and the message body
is not there and the message body is assumed to be a part of the
kludges. If you toggle the message header display and see the message
body then this is likely what has occurred. Opening the exported file in
a text editor and inserting the blank line may be all that's needed.

Purging will delete the old messages as you define in your folder

Purging is usually done automatically upon exiting TB! but if you're one

I do, however, agree with Paula that using folder templates has it's

ML Oh, you may think TB hasn't "fully" implemented html mail viewing,
ML judging by the fact that many graphics in html mail are not
ML displayed. It's a matter of security and privacy concerns (have you
ML read news reports about how spammer could use linked graphics to
ML trace your online activities?). It's a developer's choice, and a
ML fine choice it is, IMHO! (Graphics embedded in the mail are
ML displayed just fine, as you should have known.)

I have quite a few HTML messages here that were sent with the graphics
included. They displayed beautifully.

ML You may argue that TB should give users a choice to take the chance
ML and go fetch linked graphics anyway. The counter arguments would be
ML equally strong, however, if not stronger. For starters, enabling
ML that choice could be a support nightmare for RIT, which has very
ML limited human resources. Judging from the number of brave souls who
ML continue to use Outlook despite all those security concerns, the
ML potential of such nightmare is indeed very high. Second, as others
ML have pointed out, launching your favorite browser to view the
ML message is just one click away.

Indeed. Well said. :-)

ML HTML is an ever-evolving thing. Given the myriad of standards and
ML proprietary-yet-popular extensions out there with which even
ML dedicated (and much larger) browser developers (Opera software and
ML such) have problems keeping up, TB's html viewing implementation has
ML to stop somewhere. For me (and many Bat users, I believe), TB's
ML current implementation is good enough.

This is a very valid point. Netscape Mail and OE will fetch images via
links in HTML messages via their browser partners rendering engines.
Eudora, AFAIK, uses the rendering engine of IE (correct me if I'm wrong
here). The problem with using IE as a rendering engine is that the user
needs to have IE installed.

ML Lastly, there is the issue of html mail editing/sending. Should TB
ML try to be a html editor? I don't think so. Again, this is a matter
ML of resource management. It's no small feat trying to incorporate a
ML html editor. Given the fact that there are many such programs out
ML there, I see no reason for RIT trying to be another also-run. With
ML the newest MAPI support in beta, you can easily send html mail from
ML your browser or MAPI-enabled editor, and that should be enough.

The users accustomed to a monolithic approach may frown at this point
though it's a very good one. By monolithic, I mean that the application,
an e-mail client in this instance, is self contained and able to do most
if not all things e-mail related. This is in contrast to the modular
approach where specialised independent apps are used in conjunction with
the e-mail client to produce a similar effect, though usually a more
robust and user definable one.

MDP Boy, have you! Templates may be defined individually for every folder
MDP and for every recipient in the address book. I achieve the best
MDP results (IMHO and for my purposes) by exclusively using Address Book
MDP templates for groups of people (Family, Friends, Contacts, etc.) and
MDP individuals since templates can be defined at all of these levels.

I'd also like to add that there are two aspects about quick templates
that you may not realize. For each quick template, you can define a
handle-name (qt handle) and then to apply it to a message, instead of
going through the menus, you may simply type qthandleCTRLSpaceBar.

Additionally, instead of highlighting the old template, you may also use
the %CLEAR macro in your quick template. What this will do is erase
everything in the message body and then apply the quick template.

So for example, I've personally defined a template for software tech
support with the handle name 'ts'. Whenever I wish to send a message for
tech support, I click on the browser mailto: link which will generate a
message addressed to tech support. I then type in the message body
'tsCTRLSpaceBar' where the default template is completely erased and
replaced with the tech support one automagically. :-)

As far as I can tell, you cannot do this. Each account has it's own set
of filters. But you have touched on a good point here in that it's very
likely that one would want kill-filters to act globally.

There's no easy way to copy single or multiple filter rules to other

You have to first exit TB!, make the registry change, and then restart
TB!. Note however, that TB!'s editor cannot use a variable width font
even if you force it to via the registry hack. Everything looks like
gibberish. I'm quite sure that it has to do with the free caret
interface. You'll notice that with the editor, you may place your cursor
anywhere in the editor window and start typing. The character positions
seem to be already mapped out in a grid type fashion. A fixed width font
makes this possible.

DH Can anybody tell me how humans survived so long without all this -

E-mail has little to do with survival. It has more to do with a
convenient way of corresponding. Although, mind you, society is getting
sophisticated to the point where e-mail is considered a need for
'survival' as things are now. :-)

If you wish to include basic text in your mail then fine. No one is
stopping you. If you wish mail coming your way to only be in basic text,
then fine, let it be known and/or set up your filters. If others wish to
enrich what they send, which is similar to using decorated paper in
snail mail, spraying perfume on letters and envelopes, as in snail mail
etc., why belittle it or shed it in such a negative light? People walk
around with and own all sorts of gadgetry, do all sorts of things,
present papers, and do lectures with the aid of visual enhancements
which aren't really 'needed' as you put it. May as well do away with
PowerPoint and it's ilk eh, since all you really need is some plain text
on a white background to get your point across? But then again (to use
your line of argument), you're there and they can listen to you, so why
bother with the visual aid at all? It's not about need all the time. It
can be about presentation and or style.

Also, that argument about why not include everything else is rather weak
one. It's a universal template for skeptics resistance to any form of
change or introduction of new ideas. Ideas that aim to enhance what's
already presently in use. "When will it stop?" they say. One thing will
lead to another. shrug

IMO, there is a place for composing mail in rich text or sending HTML
mail. However, it simply shouldn't be routine and is at present being
very much abused. Abused because HTML mail comes at a cost. A cost that
most who use it do not recognize. There's the bandwidth cost that is not
appreciated when one analyses things on an individualised basis. The
cost on bandwidth is appreciated when one considers the amount of extra
megabytes being carried across networks when millions use HTML e-mail
unnecessarily. The other cost is that you are forcing the reader at the
other end to read the message as you are seeing it. E-mail has
exonerated me from having to read poor penmanship and fonts that I
dislike. I can read messages with my own fonts and background colour.
The recipients cannot read HTML e-mail with their own settings. You
should consider each time you're sending an HTML formatted message if
you really think it's important or meaningful that the recipient see the
message the way that you're seeing it, i.e., with the same font's, font
sizes etc.

I got some HTML e-mail Christmas greetings and birthday greetings which
I found to be rather nice. if you have other tools or ways to enhance
your communication then by all means I don't see the problem with using
it *appropriately*. The problem here is with appropriate use. The way
HTML support is implemented in most of the commonly used e-mail clients,
encourages inappropriate use of HTML e-mail. *That* is my grouse against
it. It's actually inappropriate in most situations in which e-mail is
exchanged. IMO, a default setting to compose mail in HTML format should
not have been provided in a general purpose e-mail client.

I personally do like the free caret interface myself. Also, for me,

adjustment and giving and taking. The end result has been that the
shortcomings for me do not exceed the good points. If TB! were to
support an external editor, I would still use this one.

Be that as it may, I strongly disagree with the free caret interface not
being made optional. If the developers intent was to implement an editor
that does basic things in a non-standard fashion they should either make
these non standard behaviours optional or implement the facility to use
an optional/external editor seamlessly.

It would seem that many potential users have been turned off by the
editor and this is a really unfortunate thing because it's really
unnecessary. Editing is one of the core parts of e-mail management and
the user should be able to exercise some flexibility and control.

I have no personal problems with your query. But with respect to
variable width fonts, it can really create problems with formatting of
the sender not being properly appreciated by the recipient. Variable
width fonts do look better but their use is sender centric so to speak.
What I mean is that the sender admires their message format but the
recipient fails to see what there is to admire because they are using a
different font.

Take for instance. As seen above, I underlined one of your words. If I
had used a variable width font, it really wouldn't make sense doing it
because you wouldn't see it as such at your end.

Copy and paste the text to an editor that supports variable width fonts
and look at it with various variable width fonts to see what I'm getting
at.

I agree that it's a pity that fixed width fonts are generally ugly but
they are better to use for plain text based correspondences. I have
found happiness with 'Lucida Sans Typ' at size 10 using large fonts at a
1600x1200 resolution. I never really felt happy with look until now so
I know what you mean. :-)

like it, turn it off and your tabbing will be fixed at 8 characters. :-)

Anyway, this editor grouse is a really old one and very much has a lot
to do with the fact that slated features for version 2 of TB! include
editor support for variable width fonts and support for the use of an
external editor and or an alternative integrated editor.

Hehe. But remember that the tickers text properties is configurable. You
can choose whatever font and size to use, even a variable width font.
