Re: [TCP] Hello

2007-02-06 Thread Gordon McLean
Having been off mailing lists for a couple of years, I joined here on
starting a new job (and yeah, I re-joined that other list too). It's taken
me a couple of weeks but yesterday took the biscuit.

I am a technical writer. I know, some, grammar. I am still learning (aren't
we all) but frankly I could lose less sleep than worry about what pedantic
pronouns are and how I mustn't ever use them or I'm a bad bad writer.
Pedantic, deictic, whatever!

Poor Lauren though, does she warrant an invite to here?? ;-)

In future I'll be aiming questions HERE, where everyone seems so much nicer,
and slightly MORE based in the real world. (I said slightly).

SYNTAX/SEMANTICS: a pronoun whose reference must be fixed through the
context of the utterance. EXAMPLE: the purported referents of you and me

A *what* pronoun? 8-|

You realize, don't you Tom and Al, that I'm going to have to go digging
through boxes to find my college grammar book to find if that term was
in there. It doesn't ring a bell. Does that make me not a writer?

anaphoric pronoun

SEMANTICS: a pronoun which 'refers back' to another constituent in the
sentence. EXAMPLE: if his in John loves his mother has the same
referent as John, it is an anaphoric pronoun. Pronouns which are not
anaphoric pronouns are called deictic pronouns.

 Deixis

GENERAL: The phenomenon that elements in a language may have a reference
which is dependent on the immediate context of their utterance. EXAMPLE:
personal pronouns (I , you, he, etc.), demonstratives (this, that,
etc.), spatial expressions like here and there, temporal expressions
like yesterday and now, and tense (past, present) are deictic
expressions. Another word for deixis is indexicality.

Ah, that could be it. I didn't take any classes in linguistics or
language history (or at least not any that I recall).

I think the grammar class was called Style and Usage, and it was based
on the Little, Brown Handbook. The class was one of the hardest that I

As of May 4th this year, I will have earned a Master's Degree in
Technical Writing. I have never heard the term, either!

I just looked it up, though.

deictic pronoun

SYNTAX/SEMANTICS: a pronoun whose reference must be fixed through the
context of the utterance. EXAMPLE: the purported referents of you and me
in You will get to know me better, are the speaker and the
addressee(s) of this utterance. Deictic pronouns are often opposed to
anaphoric pronouns. See Deixis.

anaphoric pronoun

Re: [TCP] Hello

2006-11-14 Thread John Posada
In the last few years, I've specialized in managing
the development of proposals and RFP responses; I must
be one of the only people in the world who really enjoys
that work, and now I head up the proposal and
business strategy practice for a rapidly growing managed service
 provider in New York City.

I LOVED doing proposals...it was my first technical writing contract
gig, did it for 18 months at Bell Communications Research. Didn't
touch anything under 5 mil and did one over 100 million dollars. With
16+ years of sales prior to technical writing, I was a natural.

Unfortunately, after Bellcore, I got into other writing and then when
I applied for proposal gigs, everyone I spoke to seems to think that
I was tainted for some reason and couldn't get considered, even when
I showed them my award certificates (I had the highest close rate of
the group), letters of recommendation, and samples.

Oh, well..their loss.

I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never
actually known what the question is.

of tech writing, my hobbies include writing, reading, vocabulary, linguistics...
Yes, I like words. I've been accused of being a poet, songwriter, and even
filker (I'm still in denial). I have other hobbies of the arts-and-crafts sort,
but I won't burden you with those (this time).

Re: [TCP] Hello

2006-11-14 Thread Maciolek, Gretchen

Greetings all,

Prepare yourself for more than you ever wanted to know
about a newbie tech writer. As of mid-August, I am the first and
only tech writer at the company I work for. My positionwas
created due tofairly
rapidcompanygrowth necessitating a more formalized
documentation strategy; or a documentation strategy at all, for that
matter. The developers at my company have created a host of
proprietary tools to support and maintain websites for 79 local TV news stations
accross the country.(As a personal
side note,I generally have a rather strongaversion to local TV
news.) Our company alsosupported the NBC Olympics websites for the Winter
games this past winter as well as the '04 Summer Games in
Athens.

Besides the fact that the company needed a tech writer,
my switch from programming to tech writing was also a ploy on my part to be able
to take a jobwith me when my family and I moved from Minnesota to
Pennsylvania this summer so my husband can attend seminary. I nowwork from
home in Pennsylvania for a company in Minnesotaand Ialsostay home with my two
wonderful children ages 3 and 1 while my husband is at
seminary.

I
don't really know what I'm doing as far as tech writing goes, but so far I seem
to be faking it well enough. I have no writing mentor in my current postion, so
I lurk on tech writing distribution lists, read your blogs, and try to read what
I can about writing when I have time. Since I am the only tech writer at my
company, it's a releif that I'm also the first because nobody really has any
expectations for me. Most of what I write is used internally and nobody really
cares what gets done when, they are just happy to have somebody writing
something and organizing what has already been written. Actually, because the
company has a very fast-paced environment and everyone is very busy,I get
very little feedback - sowho
knows, maybenobody even really cares about what I'm doing, but I'm having
fun, I'm learning, and I'm getting
paid!

I
have been in college seemingly forever. I started out at a military academy
(West Point) and after two years decided that the Army was not the life for
me. I have been
floundering around ever since acquiring credits in various degree programs at
various schools.I also got married
and had a couple kids which slowed things down a bit on the educational
front.I am currently 3 credits and a senior paper away from a B.A.
in Art History from the University of Minnesota(though I practically have enough
creditsfor2 B.A. degrees now). I also have an Associates
Degree in Multimedia and Web Design. I hope to finish my degree as soon as
possible, but taking care of two young kids and working full time keeps a person
busy! Maybe graduate school is in my future, but for the next 3 years, the focus
for our family is getting my husband through seminary.

You may not hear from me much, but know that I am lurking and
appreciating yourknowledge and
experience!
