[Touch-packages] [Bug 1729192] Re: Shutdown needs often longer than usual

2017-11-16 Thread Sworddragon
I have extended the test a bit by instead of testing if a manual
irqbalance shutdown is fast or slow I have tested if the system shutdown
is also delayed if irqbalance is manually shutdown before a system
shutdown. I have made a few system shutdowns with and without irqbalance
running and in the cases where irqbalance was running the most times the
system shutdown was delayed with systemd blaming the irqbalance job on
the console while without irqbalance running the system shutdown was
always fast.

I have tested this now multiple times by stopping and starting it again

Based on the above this might be true. So is it a known issue that
systemd prints wrong things? I think this is an issue that should be
actually fixed before tinkering around on every shutdow delay issue
(also [1] blames that [2] isn't reliable enough so it would eventually
also make sense to wait for [1]'s implementation).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1729086] [NEW] Upgrading fontconfig-config causes fonts to look aliased

2017-10-31 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 dev and upgrading fontconfig-config to version
2.12.6-0ubuntu1 changed its dependencies from "fonts-dejavu-core | ttf-
bitstream-vera | fonts-freefont-ttf | gsfonts-x11, ucf (>= 0.29)" to
"ucf (>= 0.29), fonts-dejavu-core | ttf-bitstream-vera | fonts-
liberation | fonts-freefont" which caused at default fonts-dejavu-core
being additionally installed.

My system has also ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed which utilizes
custom rules to emulate the sharp looking fonts behavior Windows systems
had. But installing fonts-dejavu-core alone causes this sharp look to
get aliased again in the most places. A workaround for fontconfig-config
is to install fonts-liberation as it seems to not break the sharp look.

I can't tell exactly which of the 3 possible packages is the main cause for
this issue:
- Is that the installation of fonts-dejavu-core alone breaks the look a bug?
- Needs ttf-mscorefonts-installer an update to take over priority or such?
- Or is it possible that fontconfig-config could also technically support
ttf-mscorefonts-installer as additional fonts dependency choice?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681190] Re: I/O errors on disc from optical drive can block raising the network

2017-04-17 Thread Sworddragon
Difficult to tell as I'm normally always using the packaged systemd from
the official Ubuntu repository but as I'm on the development version of
Ubuntu it should be more or less recent. Otherwise I have to wait until
a version >= the current git lands into the repository to test it.

Also the damaged disc has already been disposed of but since I'm
overwriting often discs one of them will get damaged earlier or later
again.

The boot is still delayed even with systemd 232-21ubuntu2 on Ubuntu
17.04 dev if something causes the network not to get up (for example as
it is happening here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1681190 ). Also
the time the job does now wait (as shown) seems to be 5 minutes and 2

minutes then).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1164694] Re: Sound does not switch automatically to the HDMI port

2017-03-12 Thread Sworddragon
If possible it could make sense to provide udev rules/systemd jobs for
each action (keep, replicate and move) and for each output (audio,
video, different ports, etc.) so that the user could easily
disable/enable them to change the default behavior.

figured out that $TERM is not set at default anymore and maybe it
makes sense to set it at default again.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1624965] [NEW] console respawn is sometimes slow and sometimes fast

2016-09-18 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev with systemd 231-6 and I'm noticing that login into
the console and than logout does show the lines
[ OK ] Stopped Getty on tty1.
[ OK ] Started Getty on tty1.
and the console needs then a few seconds to respawn. But if I login into my
desktop (and even if I logout then immediately) all works fine again as the
console respawns immediately after a logout.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1624681] [NEW] "Important" control field is a bit confusing

2016-09-17 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev and noticing that the package init seems to
be the only one with the "Important" control field which seems to be a
bit curious:

- On removing a package with apt that has the "Important" field set to "yes" it
seems to show the same warning like removing a package that has the "Essential"
field set to "yes". Even the same term "essential" is used instead of
"important" (maybe this should be changed?).
- "man deb-control" does not know this field and removing a package with dpkg
that has the "Important" field set to "yes" does not throw an error while
removing a package that has the "Essential" field set to "yes" does.
- I'm wondering what the difference between the "Essential" and "Important"
field for apt is. I can't find any information about it and can't also find the
manpage that documents the custom control fields that apt but not dpkg knows
(does such a manpage exist?).
- I'm also wondering why init uses this control field instead of the
"Essential" control field as this would additionally prevent removing it by
accident with dpkg.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1623198] [NEW] Masking and then disabling dbus.service causes the system to freeze

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1623194] [NEW] Permanent I/O from kworker since migrated to systemd

2016-09-13 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev and after upgrading from upstart to systemd
(231-6) I'm noticing that if the system is on idle (even if only booted
to the login screen) there are permanent I/O activities on my hard disk
drive. On making a look with inotifywait this happens by permanently
accessing files in /home/.ecryptfs/sworddragon/.Private (but no I/O

look with iotop the only I/O activities are comming from kworker (and
sometimes jbd2) at this time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1596327] [NEW] bash does not recache a path if the file gets missing

2016-06-26 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubutu 16.10 dev with bash 4.3-15ubuntu1 and I'm noticing that
bash caches the path of a command if the current bash instance
successfully finds it in the $PATH environment variable. But after this
caching happened if the file gets missing but reappears at another
location bash claims just that the file is in the old path missing. I
think in this case bash should withdraw the related cache entry and
search again in the $PATH environment variable.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1594971] [NEW] Inconsistent usage of options in similar applications

2016-06-21 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev with coreutils 8.25-2ubuntu2 and I'm noticing
that df and du are using the same options for the same actions but df

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1594312] [NEW] Enhancing the information about unmet dependencies

2016-06-20 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev with apt 1.3~exp2ubuntu1 and on installing
packages if they have unmet dependencies I'm getting output like this:

root@ubuntu:~# apt-get install winehq-devel
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 winehq-devel : Depends: wine-devel (= 1.9.12~ubuntu16.04.1)

This information is not extremely useful and maybe it can be enhanced. For

what reason (for example in this case libidn11 and some *heimdal packages had a
multiarch version mismatch).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1416768] Re: Fontconfig error output due to malformed conf file

2016-06-06 Thread Sworddragon
This ticket ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70258 )
claims that Steam uses its own fontconfig runtime which is too old which
causes this errors. Also on executing "fc-cache -v | grep -i err"
nothing is shown anymore so could it be that all is fine now with that
configuration file and only Steam does cause its own issue here?

Above output is produced, eg by steam when running a game.

The fontconfig error lines can be verified with "fc-cache -v | grep -i
  err".

The offending section is around original lines 70, 78:

  false

  1.0

matrix

  pixelsizefixupfactor 0
  0 pixelsizefixupfactor

size
pixelsizefixupfactor

Note that the element has 2 child elements when it
should only have 1. Removal of the second
"pixelsizefixupfactor" solves the error. After this
removal neither fc-cache nor steam report an "Fontconfig error:".

The documentation for fonts.conf, eg http://linux.die.net/man/5/fonts-
conf, suggests that the element should hold 4
  elements:

  >
  >
  >This element holds the four elements of an affine transformation.

But it appears not to produce an error when only 2 elements are
present (and does produce an error here when there are 4, for me).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1585589] Re: drop upstart-sysv

2016-05-25 Thread Sworddragon
In that case would it not be possibly better to move Upstart from main
to universe and keep the optional upstart-sysv dependency in init? This
way users can continue to use (and theoretically develop) Upstart while
the maintainers of main don't need to maintain Upstart anymore.

So Upstart gets completely removed or is it really just the init-part
(upstart-sysv) that gets removed so that Upstart continues to work in
16.10+ besides systemd to run legacy jobs? Otherwise I have to migrate a
few custom jobs to systemd before Ubuntu 16.10 gets released in october.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1585589] [NEW] init does leave no choice between upstart and systemd anymore

2016-05-25 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev with init 1.33ubuntu2 and I'm noticing that
it does now pre-depend on "systemd-sysv" instead of "systemd-sysv |
upstart-sysv". Since init is essential and upstart-sysv conflicts with
systemd-sysv this means it is not possible to install Upstart in a sane
way anymore.

In case Upstart is not supported anymore maybe all related packages
should be removed from the yakkety repository then (since Upstart can't
be installed anymore with apt for the reasons above) to avoid confusion.

** Affects: init-system-helpers (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1582015] [NEW] Moving the daily apt timeout after the APT::Periodic::Enable check

2016-05-15 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.10 dev with apt 1.3~exp1 and I'm noticing that
/etc/cron.daily/apt-compat does set the random timeout and keeping the
related processes that time open before the check for
APT::Periodic::Enable is done in /usr/lib/apt/apt.systemd.daily. Since
the timeout exists to prevent all the users to stress the servers at the
same time but an user might have disabled the periodic job with
APT::Periodic::Enable I think it would be better if setting the timeout
would be moved from /etc/cron.daily/apt-compat to
/usr/lib/apt/apt.systemd.daily at a suitable place somewhere after the
APT::Periodic::Enable check.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1572220] [NEW] Autocompletion of quoted directories with spaces does cause the / to be out of the quotes

2016-04-19 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

autocompleting a directory name (by pressing tab) that is quoted (no
matter if there is only a beginning quote or already an ending quote)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1571849] [NEW] Making the output "total" from ls more self-explanatory

2016-04-18 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 with coreutils 8.25-2ubuntu2 and for example on
executing "ls -al" on an empty directory I'm getting as output in the
first line "total 8" with 2 following lines containing the listings for

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1571363] [NEW] Installing with recommended packages does not query down anymore on already installed dependencies

2016-04-17 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 with apt 1.2.10ubuntu1 and on installing with
recommended packages for example by using the option "--install-
recommends" normally apt installs the recommended packages of the
specified package and the recommended packages of the dependencies at
any level. But at the latter I'm noticing if such a dependency was
already installed without installing its recommended packages apt will
not query anymore down to the recommended packages of this dependency.
This behavior does also break packages that provide only possibly too
minimal dependencies and relying more that the user also installs the
recommended packages like in this case:

Here is the requested output:

Executing "dpkg-reconfigure systemd" does now also not show the error anymore.
But if I'm not wrong I remember to had this for a short time in the past too
and shortly after this the error appeared again. I think I should wait at least
until I upgrade systemd to a new version again and see if this error doesn't
appear there anymore too.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1569475] [NEW] Directly upgrading a package shows that the dependencies are getting installed and upgraded if already installed

2016-04-12 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 dev with apt 1.2.9 and on upgrading a package
directly with "apt-get install" apt shows that the dependencies get
installed and upgraded if they are already installed while this looks a
bit confusing (I think showing that they get upgraded is enough). Here
is an example output:

root@ubuntu:~# apt-get install console-setup
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

The following additional packages will be installed:
  console-setup-linux keyboard-configuration
The following packages will be upgraded:

Need to get 1.759 kB of archives.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1559646] [NEW] Separating languages into more packages

2016-03-20 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 dev with libc6 2.23-0ubuntu1 and language-pack-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1174911] Re: pgrep does at default not always match the input of the user against the process name

2016-03-20 Thread Sworddragon
Edit2: On thinking about this a bit more the difference between using -f
or not is the matching against the process name only and matching
against the full command line (process name + arguments). Theoretically
matching against the process name only could also be done if pgrep would
use /proc/_pid_/cmdline instead and just cut its content before the
first argument. That would all keep as it is but the character limit
would be eliminated. Or is there a special reason why pgrep does get the
process name from /proc/_pid_/stat?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1174911] Re: pgrep cuts process names

2016-03-20 Thread Sworddragon
This is indeed useful information you have found but makes the bug not
invalid as this means pgreps matching behavior is defect as demonstrated
in the startpost. If pgrep matches against cut process names it should
also internally cut the input of the user (or automatically switch to
/proc/_pid_/cmdline if pgrep notices that the input of the user is too
long and could never return a match).

unexpected $PATH on a terminal with my user:

  sworddragon@ubuntu:~$ echo $PATH

On the console all is fine and for root on the console and a terminal all is
fine too. /etc/environment contains
"PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games""
and I couldn't figure out why only my user on a terminal gets the wrong path.

> If so did you check that the package actually is there on your disk?

Yes, it does partly exist after executing and aborting the first
command.

> I tried to reinstall vim-tiny which was in my cache and saw the following:

This bug is about that "apt-get download" does not use the (partly)
cache of a previously "apt-get install". "apt-get install" alone does
indeed work for me like in your example.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1524196] Re: Error on fetching several lists

2016-02-22 Thread Sworddragon
At the debian bugtracker is also a bugreport about this:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=807948
It turned out that the user had manually set up /tmp which caused it to have
the wrong permissions. I have not manually set up /tmp but on looking at it it
has the permissions 0755 for root:root. Setting the permissions to 0777 does
solve this issue. Since this installation is a bit old maybe it was just a
migration issue. Maybe on installing apt a script should check if the
permissions of /tmp are correct?

The error message appears after the line "systemctl enable tmp.mount".
Manually calling this command does also show the error:

root@ubuntu:~# systemctl enable tmp.mount
Operation failed: No such file or directory

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1530368] [NEW] Creating an alternative for x-cursor-theme

2015-12-31 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 dev with hicolor-icon-theme 0.15-0ubuntu1 and
lxde-icon-theme 0.5.1-1 and a recent change of adwaita-icon-theme has
caused it now to install an alternative for it. On my system this is now
the only alternative for x-cursor-theme causing it to overwrite some
cursor icons in applications where I would expect to see LXDE ones. A
solution would be that hicolor-icon-theme and lxde-icon-theme would also
install an alternative so that the user can easily change this.

** Affects: hicolor-icon-theme (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

** Affects: lxde-icon-theme (Ubuntu)

** Also affects: lxde-icon-theme (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1524196] [NEW] Error on fetching several lists

2015-12-08 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 dev with apt 1.1.4 and on executing "apt-get update" I'm
seeing several times errors like "Err:10 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
xenial-updates InReleaseCouldn't create
tempfiles for splitting up
/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_xenial-updates_InRelease
Could not execute 'apt-key' to verify signature (is gnupg installed?)" which
results that these lists are not available. Downgrading to apt 1.0.10.2ubuntu1
from Ubuntu 15.10 solves this issue.
