Re: [U2] How do I get the U2 Metadata Manager to work
(Ad) XLr8Editor allows u to edit data, programs with out a refresh option, and any thing else. With our continuous compile option, you only see the real compiler errors. We have a before read option and and after write option to handle PRC. However our editor works with Git, Svn, Team Foundation and others, so U2 can play in sandbox too. Still a hassle and I would prefer if they would just get rid of that 'feature'. I also noticed that unassigned variable error that pops up for all functions including CALL that return a new variable. Some people may regard assigning a value before you use a function as good coding standard, I don't see the point, though. I haven't tried this in anger, but I recall that BDT treats all files as data files and you can edit data as well. Maybe this is a feature they could add to keep Dict files and hashed files separate so you don't have to look for the BP within 1000 data files every time. I have been using an external editor (mv developer) for several years now. I always save the program to disk, open it with ED, add a blank line somewhere and file it with FIBC. That takes care of PRC. Locking works when you open a program externally, so the only chance that someone could snatch the program ab incorporate it into another project is in that short period between saving in the external editor and opening it with ED on the UD server for the first time. Since I am the only UD programmer in the company it is virtually impossible that will ever happen. Well, and as long as you have OS.ED you can bypass PRC anyway. OK, if you NEVER EVER fix data with ED then you could probably remove it, but who would voluntarily block the only fire escape? We have a really old version of PRC (3.9) and I can't make a business case to invest in new software. There are other tools like mv.SSIS that I'd rather get first. Especially since tools like Rocket's Metadata Manager don't seem to work or I am too stupid to install them properly. I managed to get at least VSG to work on one SQL Server 2008 box, but that is a really primitive tool and I hate it. And I am still looking for a way to read data from a relational database in a Basic program. You do need to get some programs from Susan for things to work as I have it now. I'm told the latest version of PRC supports BDT. We are currently testing the new version of PRC but I haven't had an opportunity to try BDT on this version.. As far as false errors, the latest version of BDT is greatly improved. However, I have noticed couple of false errors: 1) if the numeric subroutine label does not have a : BDT doesn't recognize the label (like 99*). 2) LOCATE(J,ORIG.PH,2;XXXPOS) THEN FOUND=1 ELSE FOUND=0 , BDT will report that XXXPOS was never assigned a value. The startup of UniObjects Server the timeout is usually set to about an hour. That value can be changed to as long as you need. However, we have found that the connection is not persistant and will eventually time out. Our U2WebLink middleware for Apache Tomcat has a connection manager that checks on the connections that UniObjects that have been made with Universe or Unidata. If they are not in use, then they are checked to make sure they are working. If the connections are not working the are removed by the connection manager and re-initiated. We have clients that use both Unidata and Universe. Since U2s replication strategies are completely different and not compatible we implemented something very simple. We have a basic code wrapper that goes around every read and delete that essentially make those actions transactions. This wrapper uses Quartz open source job scheduler running under Apache Tomcat to write to the subscriber(s) system using UniObjects for Java after it has read it from the Publisher system. One of our clients is doing upwards of 10k transactions per hour. Their system in never more that a few seconds behind. They use their subscriber system to for hot/warm/cold backup. For those clients using our XLr8 product line this technology is already built-in so they get the benefit right away. Nonetheless, this technology is not expensive call us for a quote. [U2] [Ad] Free Web Developer
U2logic, a Colorado based tools and web developer, is announcing the release of its newly developed XLr8 Developer for Web programming. The XLr8 Developer is an Eclipse plug-in and part of U2logic's every growing tools available for the U2 databases. U2logic has taken an open source lightweight remote procedure call protocol called json-rpc and is used to communicate with U2 databases. The overhead for this software is minimal so that the communication with U2 database is anywhere from 30% to 700% faster than prior technology U2logic used from IBM. Json-rpc uses open source web server from Apache's Tomcat and can run on most every hardware and software platform. Currently, json-rpc is being ported to Microsoft's .Net platform. U2logic is calling this middleware U2Weblink. U2Weblink is currently available in a two user version at no cost and can be downloaded from www.u2logic.com. [U2] [ADV] New free XLr8 Editor Upgrade
We at U2logic have had a crazy month of getting out a bunch of new usable features for our free XLr8 Editor. All of those wonderful features you have been waiting for have arrived. What is new? 1) Color coding of reserved words is now available. You can pick your own colors by going to preferences and XLr8 Editor/XLr8 Basic Code Editor menu tree. 2) Cache files listing for Universe. Since we have to open every file on your Universe system to find out what file type it is, you can now cache the listing. Change this functionality in the preferences XLr8 Editor menu tree. 3) Subroutines now can be folded and unfolded. This means if you have written your code with internal subroutine calls you can close them in the editor to a single line or open them fully. When you click on the subroutine name on the outline tab, your folded subroutine with unfold. By default the XLr8 Editor unfolds all subroutines. If you have not tried our XLr8 Editor based on the Eclipse.org technology, please go to our downloads option on U2logic.com menu. I've had to apply an absolute height to my navigation section to get it to render the border correctly. I don't know what else has changed, but obviously the rendering engine is different. We have been installing software for years on Universe/Unidata platforms. We have had trouble remembering what pieces need to be installed when or what did we forget to install on this update. Well folks, we at U2logic, have released a free installation plug-in that runs under the Eclipse platform. This installer helps the programmer/staffer create the script needed for the patch or the full release of the software. The XLr8Installer then copies all of the data, dictionaries, and programs to an XML script. This script is then used to install at a local machine or a machine over the internet via UniObjects. If you are using our XLr8 Editor, you will automatically receive this update. I saw a posting yesterday that XLr8 for Eclipse was free. Then I read on their website that it's free to XLr8 users under current maintenance agreements. As I understand it XLr8 runs over RedBack. So buying XLr8 means buying RedBack plus the development tool plus session licenses - if you're concerned about pricey you really need to take another look at the numbers for the various products in this industry. XLr8 for Eclipse is free and no longer requires RedBack. The Web site has been updated to that fact. Therefore, there is no tool cost, no session license cost, and no charge per Web transaction as other products are charging. Per the u2Logic web page, XLr8 runs on Microsoft's IIS (Ver. 5 or 6) using ASP programs for the front end but that conflicts with your pre-requisite for not running on a Microsoft server. DesignBais uses the exact same technology, costs less for the base product, and doesn't need the additional (pricey) RedBack to provide session management. If any of these points are causing you to reconsider your options, please feel free to drop me a note and we can talk about what's available in this market and how various products may or may not suit your needs. XLr8 can run under IIS or Apache Tomcat, producing HTML/JavaScript code that is not rendered on the fly by IIS or Tomcat making it 3 to 7 times faster than anything out in the U2 market. Reading, writing, deleting, and subroutine calls are handled by AJAX and are fast or faster than telnet screens. But unlike DesignBais, which you represent by the way, this product can be modified, enhanced, added to by anything you find on the internet. The code produced by XLr8 is open and runs on either IE or Firefox. Again, something DesignBais has not been able to say. So how does U2logic do it. Well, if you have been using our free U2Editor since December of last year you would know. We at U2logic have done it again. We have upgraded our Free U2Editor. We have added the ability to change colors. The best feature, however, is that the U2Editor has RESIZING built in. Just right click on the file and you can view the file statistics that Unidata/Universe create. Or right click to bring up the resizing wizard. Why pay for fast when you can have free. RE: [U2] - Java - AJAX
We at U2logic have been using AJAX a long time. We call it by its call sign of XMLHTTP. It concepts behind are simple. You can use your Unidata/Universe subroutines from the web and it threads a process from JavaScript. This means the Web screen does not refresh. No longer are Web screens step children to telnet processes. We can call routines before and after prompts just like we do on green screen technology. We update totals, verify code files, check inventory, remove inventory, and update data all without the user noticing any time delay. We have even taken on the huge task of converting SB+ applications to the Web. We have conversion processes that read through all of the forms, processes, and menus. An XLr8 conversion process converts all them to either basic code or ASP/JavaScript/HTML. That means at the end of the day you no longer are tied to SB+ archaic looking screens, they are Web enabled. If you are trying to code this manually it can be time consuming. We would know we have over 1500 web forms developed for our software and our custom software for our clients. That is why we developed XLr8. It creates the code for the ASP/JSP programs that has all of the necessary calls to backend to reuse that business logic that U2 clients have developed over the years. This is why we our clients barely realize they are running Unidata/Universe. This is where you have to be in today's world. We are competing against applications from Microsoft, Oracle, and such. We better look and feel like we are the best. [U2] [AD] Free U2Editor for Universe and Unidata
U2logic is announcing release 1.0.8 of the free U2Editor. We have the fixed some bugs and added many new features. The list below details those changes: 1) Added preferences for formatting basic code. 2) Fixed delete so that it removes items from the server and projects, unlinks items from projects and refreshes the tree correctly. 3) Fixed a couple of problem with the compile and format that was caused by the new project features. 4) Add a new basic program wizard. 5) Made the project a drop down when linking a basic program to a project. 6) There is now the ability to create a project and associate a list of files with it. 7) Delete an item from a file is now working. 8) Delete of an account has been implemented. 9) Added dynamic discovery of account for UniVerse servers. We have documentation for the new project feature on our web site at www.u2logic.com. Click on the download menu option and click on documentation for U2Eclipse Projects. We appreciate all the feedback we have been getting. We are working hard to put in many of the features that have been suggested. Keep the comments coming. [U2] Free Editor
For too many years in the U2 Community, we have been laboring with a single line editor. Whether it was ED or the improved AE we have been pretty much stuck in the 70's and 80's. Others have produced a lot of full-screen editors, but they take a telnet license for every session. We have a solution for those who need to edit from multiple accounts, machines and databases simultaneously in one editor environment. U2Editor works on workstations such as Windows, Linux, Hp-UX, AIX, Solaris, and Mac OS X. U2Editor is built on open source development tool called Eclipse as a plug-in. By using the Eclipse platform for the open source community, U2Editor can be updated automatically or manually via the web using Eclipse Update. Those using U2Editor will always have the most up-to-date copy of the software. U2Editor is available today for downloading at www.u2logic.com. RE: [U2] MvInternet - IBM Licensing Requirement
It does not matter that who built the multiplex software or how it works only RedBack is allowed by contract to do multiplexing. All of the scenarios would require more licenses except those using RedBack. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dave S Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 6:18 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: RE: [U2] MvInternet - IBM Licensing Requirement I have seen and used multiplexing software where you specify the number of licenses (ports) to be used. If you assign 10 ports for example, then the 11th user has to wait until a port is freed up. Ideally the requests only take up a few seconds, so the 11th user does not have to wait that long. Under a multiplexing setup, utilizing client-server 100% you might be able to purchase fewer licenses then under a non client server setup. You could have 1,000 actual users for example only consume 200 concurrent licenses at one time with a client-server setup. I have used other software packages (Saleslogix) that require each and every unique user to have a license. Think of this scenario. You have a Web site that is accessed by over 100 users at a give time. You would have to have at least $44,000 worth of licenses to handle that load versus just around 6 to 10 web shares with RedBack. RE: [U2] RedBack and Named Common
We are real familiar with this situation. SB+ uses an extensive Common block and we have developed techniques to maintain that common block no matter what responder the application uses. Our program XLr8 maintains the information so that you application backend code will be able to run with none or little modification. The one exception is, of course, locking. Redback does not support persistent locking and either does XLr8. I am not 100% certain on this point. However if you cant guarantee returning to the same connection then the answer is _effectivly_ the same, that is you gain nothing by putting information into named common. If your named common did nothing else other than have the list of 'opened files' that were common amongst your application, I think that would behave - where you get into trouble is in the case of lock and persistence since you may not/will not return to the same connection, and in the mean time, even if you did, the same session may have/will have served other users. So, variables in memory that pertain to a given session would not serve much use in Named Common. And this is the overriding problem. Whilst we do use named common to reduce the amount of file open's performed we also stack a lot of _user specific_ information up there including, user name, user ID and terminal number(location) for auditing purposes. NB this is not the Universe id's it is actually related to the application so I cant get around it using system variables and the like ;-( So bottom line is I guess that I have to rework our code so that we reinitialize common on every call rather that only at the beginning. RE: [U2] Redback Startup
We have been using Redback for over 4 years now. The learning curve is not that easy for Unidata/Universe programmers. The paradigm switch to coding in ASP/JavaScript/HTML is not that hard, but the debugging can be quite overwhelming. I would recommend at least two or three days training on Redback. We have found the learning curve to be at least 4 to 8 weeks. As an IBM VAR we offer on-site and local training for our customers and clients. Our IBM certified staff have the real world experience creating web software. We are not just trainers, but we are programmers that can teach. Additionally, we sell a tool, called XLr8, which uses Redback to create the code and therefore minimizes the amount of effort and knowledge needed. Our tool creates the ASP/JSP code to run your page along with the HTML/JavaScript automatically. We have a new enhancement for XLr8 that helps the SB+ programmers convert their applications to the web. I am new to the Unidata arena, and from what I am seeing, there is a lot to be learned to use it effectively. Our accounting system is built on Unidata (v 6.0). I have very little in the way of documentation, due to the fact, that the software company wants you to go through them to get anything done. This is a very expensive proposition to say the least. I am wondering what type of getting started with Unidata information is out there. If y'all have suggestions on resources that I can learn Unibasic that would be great. Thanks for the help. Re: [U2] Resizing All Files in a System
There is an inexpensive tool from U2logic that resizes files using wIntegrate as the front end called U2ReSizer. You can find them at www.u2logic.com. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 2004 7:17 AM Subject: [U2] Resizing All Files in a System Is there a way to semi-automagically resize all the files in a UniData account/system? When we used Pick D3, we could run a process which would store the mod to use on restore in the file definition item. If we did a full system file save and restore, the files would be recreated with the new and improved mod. We use to do this on a fairly regular basis, but since changing to UniData, we haven't really addressed this. I know I can use guide to get suggested resizing, and that I can use memresize to actually resize an individual file, but is there a way to do this system wide? We are considering migrating to a newer machine, and since we would have a system with no users on it for a while, it seems to be the best time to implement a massive update. Pointers to the correct manual would be appreciated, or a brief summary. I'm certain that this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it in the archives. --Tom Pellitieri Century Equipment Toledo, Ohio --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
