[U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Wjhonson

Running Universe 11.1.9 Information flavor on top of Windows

A process which has been running for months, has suddenly decided that it has a
Fatal Error !

When I debug it further, I get this symptom.

In a Universe BASIC program, I can OPEN the file (a type 1 directory)
I can SELECT the elements in the file (perfect)
I can READNEXT each element (perfect so far)

When I try to READ one of these items (windows files) I get in the ON ERROR
clause the error set to 40070

What has occurred? Who has messed with what? How do I fix it?

Thanks.

Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Woodward, Bob
Check your directories, specifically any TMP/TEMP directories, for a
maximum number of entries. HD Root directories, savedlists, ph,
anything that would have temporary files created in them. This caught
me once before and it took forever to stumble on the idea that windows
does seem to have a maximum number of files condition. If you can
delete a handful of temp files in a directory and the read starts to
work, that's the one you need to be looking at.

Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Wjhonson

Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No :)

Here's an update.
IF I open one of these in notepad, and just add an extra char to the end and
then file it, the last modified date now appears for that file, but none of
the other ones of course.

And doing that, makes it so, in TCL, I can now EDit that particular record, but
none of the other records, which still cause the fatal abort.

So that's odd. But at least, I can go through and edit every single bleeping
entry in the directory, file it, and make it editable again in Universe. WHY
this has occurred, and WHETHER it's going to continue with new entries, is
still an open question

Running Universe 11.1.9 Information flavor on top of Windows

A process which has been running for months, has suddenly decided that it has a
Fatal Error !

When I debug it further, I get this symptom.

In a Universe BASIC program, I can OPEN the file (a type 1 directory) I can
SELECT the elements in the file (perfect) I can READNEXT each element (perfect
so far)

When I try to READ one of these items (windows files) I get in the ON ERROR
clause the error set to 40070

What has occurred? Who has messed with what? How do I fix it?

Thanks.

Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Bruce Decker

Can you:

SELECT filename WITH @ID = offending_key

If not, then it might be control chars or corruption in the key.
I've seen it before where the READNEXT can grab what it 'thinks' is the
key but if it contains some funky char, when you try to READ using that
key, the READ fails.

Another test:

SELECT filename
ED filename

If you can ED or AE all of them when stacked but can't when you specify
the key, it might be garbage in the key that's difficult to see.

You can sometimes READNEXT id then CRT OCONV( id, \MXOC\) to see the key
in hex and that might lead you to the issue.

Also if keys are written containing @AM, it will create multiple entries
in the select stack where each part of the key becomes it's own element
in the select stack. When you look at the list, it seems right but when
processing in basic, it's not quite right.

Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Wjhonson

Bruce you cannot ED any of it when stacked.

So the SELECT finds all 115 records. Great.
Then when you try to ED off that select, it immediately bombs with a fatal
error.
Even if I delete the first key in the select or the first twelve keys, it
doesn't help. Each record fails.

In fact, the error first occurred when a user was trying to read a record deep
down the list.
I just didn't realize right away, that every record has the same symptom

To me it seems to be something wrong in the Windows setup of the entries, not
in Universe.
Something in Windows has screwed up the header data of the file perhaps which
would explain why the Last Modified Date column is completely blank.

2014-05-06 Thread Woodward, Bob
This sounds like it's back to permissions. If it was UNIX, then I'd say
the owner/user for the records(files) was deleted from the system and
then editing them assigns a new, valid, owner. You said you're on
windows, though.

Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No :)

Here's an update.
IF I open one of these in notepad, and just add an extra char to the end
and then file it, the last modified date now appears for that file,
but none of the other ones of course.

And doing that, makes it so, in TCL, I can now EDit that particular
record, but none of the other records, which still cause the fatal
abort.

So that's odd. But at least, I can go through and edit every single
bleeping entry in the directory, file it, and make it editable again in
Universe. WHY this has occurred, and WHETHER it's going to continue
with new entries, is still an open question

Re: [U2] [Universe] [Windows]

2014-05-06 Thread Peter Cheney
I'd have to agree that it is likely going to be permissions.
While I do not have UV on Windows on AIX if I create a record in a type 1 file
and then change the ownership to something that I cannot read I get the
following:
ED PCTMP EDTEST
Program ED: pc = 6952, Fatal error has occured.
[~] $

CT PCTMP EDTEST
Program COPYP: pc = 1A46, Fatal error has occured.
[~] $

Perhaps the error you're getting is a windows equivalent of the above or
something?

The permissions on my file during this test were:
[PCTMP] $ ls -l EDTEST
-rw---1 root other 56 May 07 08:03 EDTEST
[PCTMP] $

So I'd be looking at the permissions of the parent folder as well as its
contents.

Re: [U2] Universe Windows reading a Virtual Tape File

2008-08-18 Thread Dave Taylor

Curt,

The only virtual save and restore processes on Universe are uvbackup and
uvrestore, and they work only with eachother and only with existing Universe
accounts.

We have two tools that you can use, however, to accomplish your goal.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss these.

And remember, there are no dumb questions.

I'm still in the process of converting a D3 application to Universe and

Re: [U2] Universe Windows reading a Virtual Tape File

2008-08-18 Thread Ed Clark
Not a dumb question. I've seen threads on here before about this. I
think the bottom line is that universe on windows has no way to deal
with virtual tape, but universe on unix/linux does. So if you have
access to universe on unix, load your t-dumps there and then use
uvbackup to save/restore to the windows machine.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall that universe can import a d3
file-save, and maybe the program that does that can read from a file.

As another alternative, If what you have is t-dumps, the t-dump
format is almost trivially simple. You could write a basic program
using OPENSEQ/READBLK to read from the virtual tape file and load the
data--your own t-load program.

Has anyone ever seen a virtual tape driver for windows? In the same
way that you can create a virtual disk in ram, has anyone ever seen a
program that creates a virtual tape from a disk file?

Ron:

I was able to restore a D3 account (from Linux) onto a UniVerse on Windows
machine (my Thinkpad). In order to accomplish this you need to know the secret
IBM/U2 handshake. Fortunately, a VAR told me what that secret handshake was
and I got it done. I emailed Curt the instructions for this secret handshake
so he should be able to properly restore a D3 account onto his UniVerse on
Windows machine.

Colin Alfke told me how to do the same thing with UniData and I was able to
upgrade our clients from D3 to UniData by doing an account restore.

[U2] UniVerse/Windows and VMWare {Unclassified}

2005-10-11 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
Folks,

We are considering a server consolidation exercise, particularly for our
Development and Test environments, using VMWare to provide several
'virtual server' environments on a single physical box. One part of
this proposal is that my UniVerse Development server will become a
virtual server image on a box shared with up to three other virtual
servers.
This development server is currently running UV 10.0.15 on Windows
Server 2003, and will soon (I hope) be upgraded to 10.1.11.

I have no worries at all about hardware capacity, our dual P-III/933 1GB
RAM system hardly ever gets very busy (unless we accidentally code a
hard loop!), and the replacement system will certainly way outperform
that with a couple of dual-core Opterons or Xeons, masses of RAM and a
bunch of 15000rpm disks.
What I am a little concerned about is whether UV will 'play nicely with
the other children'

Has anyone got any experience with running UniVerse under VMWare?
Are there any traps to beware of, or do you have any tips you could pass
along?

Thanks in advance

RE: [U2] UniVerse/Windows and VMWare {Unclassified}

2005-10-11 Thread Stuart . Boydell
   Michael ,

Yes is the answer, we've be trialling UV (10.1.12)/VMware and also
with SUSE/Xen. Both of which work/play with UV just fine (so far).

We are setting up 'single' user development environments for each
developer and a floating number of test environments. We currently
have 3 of these running simultaneously but figure we will stretch that
out to about 15 on our hardware platform.

Xen is interesting but as yet doesn't overtly support Windows. VMware
is probably simpler to manage and at this point has more configuration
   options.

Also note that Microsoft are rejigging their licencing for virtual
images of their OSs to make licencing more practical

   Subject: [U2] UniVerse/Windows and VMWare {Unclassified}

 Folks,
We are considering a server consolidation exercise, particularly
 for our
Development and Test environments, using VMWare to provide several
'virtual server' environments on a single physical box. One part of
this proposal is that my UniVerse Development server will become a
virtual server image on a box shared with up to three other virtual
 servers.
This development server is currently running UV 10.0.15 on Windows
Server 2003, and will soon (I hope) be upgraded to 10.1.11.
I have no worries at all about hardware capacity, our dual
 P-III/933 1GB
RAM system hardly ever gets very busy (unless we accidentally code
 a
hard loop!), and the replacement system will certainly way
 outperform
that with a couple of dual-core Opterons or Xeons, masses of RAM
 and a
 bunch of 15000rpm disks.
What I am a little concerned about is whether UV will 'play nicely
 with
 the other children'
Has anyone got any experience with running UniVerse under VMWare?
Are there any traps to beware of, or do you have any tips you could
 pass
 along?
 Thanks in advance
 Mike

2004-12-23 Thread Anthony Dzikiewicz
I know Ive been thru this before. I get the RPC service not running message
in the uniadmin application. I looked in services and unirpc has been
started. Something has to be tweaked and I forget what. I should mention
that I am running Universe PE. The client isn't going to buy the real thing
until the solution is sure to work. Don't know if this matters, but I
thought Id mention it.

We use a Function Key for this We tell users to, say, F12 at the

Seems to work...

Sorry, no

I am also wondering how to change the login prompt for the Universe

UniAdmin, under Network Services, Telnet
On Parameters tab, change the Logon Banner test box.
All users on the box get the same message.

Also UniAdmin, Network Services, Telnet,
1) Parameters tab
Under User Policy, check UV Account
2) Users tab, Add User
In User Name put login ID
In User Description put user name (!)
   Click Domains Add
In Domain box put your Windows Domain name
In Account, put full path to the account you want them to log in to

Yes, with no problems (at least on Unix). You might try VT100?

 Last, when you log into
Universe on windows it always asks what directory (or account) you would

You will always get this prompt when the user is administrator (or has
admin rights). Try using a Non-admin User ID.
