I think I'd call it more of a difference in philosophy than a feature or flaw. A
basic tenent of the SQLian religion is that any operation which affects the database
is performed through a single interface, that being SQL. Pickians on the other hand
want to use anything that is efficient for a particular application to perform
database operation so we've got your direct read/writes as well as SQL so we can
pick/choose/combine at will.

[U2] B2B

2004-08-08 Thread Moderator
Posted for non-member (Colin Lucas (The System Works) [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
We are trying to test a secure B2B solution from within UV (version 10.0.8
on Unix variant TRU64 5.1b on an Alphaserver ES80) using XML https. The
internet connection is via a proxy server that only listens for client
connections on port 80. I have used setHTTPDefault to set the address of the
proxy server and the port to 80; amongst other things.
However, when I use submitRequest with a request handle created by a call to
createSecureRequest it is directed to port 443 (SSL) of the proxy server. I
have been able to determine this by using protocol logging and inspecting
httplog. Normal http(80) through the proxy server is not a problem.
Short of re-inventing the wheel and using the direct sockets API, can
anybody shed some light on how to stop submitRequest when seeing https,
deciding it must go to port 443 of the proxy. Unfortunately, due to some
corporate constraints, changing the ports the proxy server listens on is not
a trivial task.

Thanks,
Colin Lucas

[U2] AIX printers direct

2004-08-09 Thread Moderator
Forwarded on behalf of a non-member ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
We have approximately 600 printers that will be attached to UniVerse
10.1.2 on AIX 5.2.3. We do not want to use the Unix spooler, but want to
keep the spooled files in UniVerse so they can be managed by the SP
commands. Every time we us lp driver the file ends up in the Unix
spooler and we have lost control through the SP commands. These printers
are HP type printers connected through our network.

Does any one know of a Unix driver that will allow us to print to these
devices without going through the Unix spooler (lp)?

Thanks for you help

[U2] Over quoting

2004-09-14 Thread Moderator
To all our subscribers,
 Please try to trim excess quotes from your responses. Over quoting
is annoying to subscribers with slow connections and it inflates the
digest versions immensely. Aside from all that, a trimmed quote makes it
easier for everyone to understand which of the points encouraged you to
respond. All consideration appreciated.

[U2] UniObjects over SSL

2004-09-16 Thread Moderator
Forwarded to the list for a non-member (Jeremy Geffre
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). Jeremy, please visit
http://listserver.u2ug.org/ to subscribe.

I'm having problems getting UniObjects to connect over SSL
and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. We are on
UniData 6.03, and so far I have done the following:

1) Added the IBM security provider to the list in
java.security
2) Added the UniObject jar files and ibmjsse.jar to the
classpath
3) Created a Security Context Record and changed the files
unirpcservices and .scrfile
4)  Restarted unirpcd
5) Created a truststore and imported the CA root
certificate into it
6) Created a keystore and imported a signed certificate
into it
7) Wrote a simple class and ran it

The exception is pretty vague and states:

The connection is bad, and may be passing corrupt data =
81001
asjava.uniobjects.UniSessionException: The connection is
bad, and may be passing corrupt data
at
asjava.uniobjects.UniSession.connect(UniSession.java:323)
at UOJTestSSL.main(UOJTestSSL.java:39)

The class class I'm using is for a direct connection and
contains the following code:

import asjava.uniobjects.*;
import asjava.uniclientlibs.*;
import asjava.unirpc.*;

public class UOJTestSSL
{
  static final String u2host = ourhost;
  static final String username = username;
  static final String password = passwd;
  static final String accountpath = /path/to/account;
  static final String keyfilepath = /path/to/keyfile;
  static final String keyfilepwd = keypwd;
  static final String trustfilepath = /path/to/testtrust;
  static final String trustfilepwd = trustpwd;

  public static void main (String args[])
  {
try
{
  UniJava uJava = new UniJava();
  UniSession uSession =
uJava.openSession(UniObjectsTokens.SECURE_SESSION);
  // UniSession uSession = uJava.openSession(); **
Works with this line (non-secure) **

uSession.setHostPort(UniRPCTokens.UNIRPC_DEFAULT_PORT);
  uSession.setHostName(u2host);
  uSession.setUserName(username);
  uSession.setPassword( password );
  uSession.setAccountPath(accountpath);

  // Now we ll set locations for the keystore and
truststore and a password
for the keystore

  System.setProperty(javax.net.ssl.trustStore,
trustfilepath);
  System.setProperty(javax.net.ssl.keyStore,
keyfilepath);
  System.setProperty(javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword,
keyfilepwd);

System.setProperty(javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword,
trustfilepwd);

  uSession.setSSLDescriptor(null);

  uSession.connect();

  // Instantiate a command object and set the command
  UniCommand uvc = uSession.command ();
  uvc.setCommand (COUNT PERSON WITH FIRST.NAME =
'Jeremy');

  // Execute the command
  uvc.exec();

  // Print the response
  System.out.println (uvc.response ());

  // Disconnect from the Database
  uSession.disconnect();
}
catch (UniSessionException e)
{
  System.out.println ( e.getMessage() +  =  +
e.getErrorCode() );
  e.printStackTrace();
}
catch (UniCommandException e)
{
  System.out.println ( e.getMessage() +  =  +
e.getErrorCode() );
}
  }
}

Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.
If someone has a simple working class that uses SSL, I
would appreciate getting a copy. Thanks,

[U2] Clarification - Free as in Liberty - Free as in Beer

2004-10-05 Thread Moderator
All,
 A concern has been raised that the Charter discussion, and the U2UG
as a whole, have accidentally blurred the line between the e-mail lists
and the user group. Hopefully, this will help:

The list has been a labor of love, first by Mike, then by Clif, and
now by a team which includes myself and Larry Hiscock. As per our
promise to Clif, the list is and will remain Free as in Liberty / Free
as in Beer. This means that you don't have to belong to the U2UG to
post on the list. You don't have to pay dues to post on the list. You
don't have to share confidential information like phone number, street
address, or favorite color in order to join the lists. You don't even
have to contribute. Most list members are lurkers, neither asking nor
answering questions. I, myself, lurked for six months before I felt I
could even contribute occasional posts.

The U2UG is a different labor of love. It started on U2-Community
(part of the confusion) when Dawn found some like minded people
(including Clif - another part of the confusion) and presented a simple
idea: while the list is powerful because it has a free format, a user
group could offer a focused format for the times when that is more
effective (like planning events, coordinating with IBM on enhancements,
and other more organized activities).

The U2UG does have stewardship of the lists. We (U2UG) don't own
them, we (everyone on u2-users u2-community) own them. All U2UG offers
is the infrastructure to keep them running. And U2UG can only offer that
due to Larry Hiscock's unselfishly providing free hosting for the lists.

While I have your attention, I should also point out the IBM does
not own the lists. They are glad we are here and several of their people
contribute posts. However, the lists exist solely because we (everyone
on u2-users u2-community) see a value to them.

[U2] List Problems

2004-11-03 Thread Moderator
All,

 The lists seem to have settled in nicely. We aren't seeing much in
the way of complaints. If you do have a problem, please contact the
moderation team [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that we can work to
resolve it.
 Most of the problems we do see have to do with spam filters which
block your ability to see the list traffic. So, if you are seeing this,
you are probably okay - until you company updates, changes, or tweaks
the filtering. In that event, please let us know if the list appears to
go silent for you. Ideally, give us a second e-mail when you contact us,
in case our mails to you are also blocked.

[U2] Generic Pick Spooler for Universe on NT?

Does anyone know of a generic Pick Spooler for Universe on NT that is
available for sharing or for purchase?

This would enable generic Pick software (R83, AP, D3, R91, Mentor Pro, mvBase,
C. Itoh, etc., etc.) to run on Universe using their native print-enabling
verbs with little or no modification.

If you don't know of one, do you have any interest in one, in the event that I
am forced to write one?

David,
What I do is subscribe to both the list and the digest. That way I can
skim and delete the individual messages as they come in (from the list),
still have all the content if I need it later (from the digest). To
control bandwidth, I have them going to two different names, so I can
opt to not pull the e-mail with the separate posts if I don't have time
or speed to spare for it.
As moderator I can't delete-without-reading, but you could. I know it's
not the answer you proposed, but I find it a workable solution.
What has me more curious is your comment about the online indexing being
insufficient. What would you like to see done differently?

We are contractually bound to work though our valued business

do appreciate your loyalty, we really do. However, your contracts are
with
your Master VAR. We happily assist our Master VARs and direct partners
with
technical information. They in turn provide that information to you
in the
form of technical support and training (if they offer it).

Here in the North America, we have some Master VARs, but generally we
work
with partners directly. In other regions, they may sell more through
distributors and/or Master VARs. It has been this way for a very long
time.

Work with your Master VAR and they'll work with us.

[U2] Source code question

2005-06-04 Thread Moderator

POSTED ON BEHALF A NON-MEMBER
Hello guru's

I've got question about source code.
If I compile on 2 different machines and 2 different OS ex. HP-UX and AIX but
on the same Universe versions the same source code (any basic code) did they
work the same ? Maybe there are some system specific basic funcions which
working different on different OS's.
Conclusion : If I have source aplication ( all in UV Basic ) after migrating(compiling) on another OS there could be some changes between this two applications ex. different calculations, time representations etc.??

Hi all,

New to the list; I've browsed the archives but cannot find anything
relating to specifically the problem I am having, so if anyone can
offer assistance it would be much appreciated.

Crystal Reports XI trying to access Universe 10.1.7 using the ODBC
drivers IBM UniVerse ODBC driver version 4.00.01.7084

The report reads the dictionary - that is, it produces a list of field
names and data types. It will not browse data when a field is
selected: it returns an empty dialogue box. Previewing the report
generates an error as follows:

Failed to retrieve data from the database.
Details: HY000:[IBM][UVODBC][1401032]Error ID: 46
Severity:ERROR
Facility: DBCAPERR - UCI Error.

Unexpected filename. Token was VENDOR. Scanned command
was FROM VENDOR VENDOR. [Database Vendor Code:

Where VENDOR is the name of the file being accessed.

Does anyone have this particular configuration working? Can
anyone suggest why it might not be working?

Thanks in advance for all assistance.

[U2] DATABASE write problem

2005-07-19 Thread Moderator
POSTED FOR NON-MEMBER Anmol Chandrakant Khopade
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am facing a problem wherein a WRITE operation to a type 19 file is failing
in some cases.

The call to STATUS() function within the ON ERROR clause returns error 40019.

Strangely this problem does not occur for all the writes operations, but
approximately 100 times (out of 60K write operations). The record id contains
the current time, so it doesn't seem to be an issue of 2 concurrent writes
using the same record id. A point to note that this file has read and writes
happening simulatneously i.e. A process keeps writing records, while the other
process keeps on polling this file to read the records.

Any pointers to the below points will be highly appreciated

1. Documentation where the error number can be looked up (40019 in this case)
2. If anyone has encountered a similar problem with write operation on a type
19 files, and has a solution, it would really help.

Thanks in advance

Warm regards

Anmol

Universe 10.1.4 on linux. A LISTU shows X users logged on, but the SYSTEM(35)

there a way to reset that number so it is accurate? Users keep trying to logon

[U2] UniVerse I-descriptor Help

2007-03-26 Thread Moderator
REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER: Laure Hansen [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I'm trying to avoid having to write a subroutine to, basically, always
round up the result of a division between a multi-value field and a
single-value one, in an I-descriptor (UV 10.1).

My MV field is named CONS, my single value one is names UNITS, the
formula is CONS / REUSE(UNITS). The result will obviously be a multi-value.

If the result is an integer, I want it as is. When it's not, I want it
rounded up to the nearest integer. The data must be examined value by
value. CONS and UNITS both are integers.

Thanks in advance!

[U2] IBM UniObjects.Net

2007-03-28 Thread Moderator

REPOSTED FOR NONMEMBER: Peter Wezenaar [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A couple of questions:

1) Is Uniobjects.Net for .Net a paid product like Redback or is it free to
those who have Universe installed.

2) If my universe machine is a unix machine, does that change the licensing
model. I seem to remember at one point it came with the windows version
of UV, but needed to pay if you ran Universe on a Unix machine.

Any help on above would be greatly appreciated.

REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am trying to figure out how I can lock a UniData file (one that is in
the process of being update) so that a 'list' command executed from a
uniobject call will wait until the lock on the file is released before
retrieving the data. I was able to lock a file from within a UniBasic
program using the 'FILELOCK' command but this only stops a user from
updating the file, the user can still access the file with 'list'
command. The operating systems that I am working with are UniData 6.0,

[U2] [UV] - Distributed Files

Hi,
I'm looking at implementing Universe distributed files. We are moving a UV app
from TRU64 to LINUX on Intel, and unfortunately that means we will lose the
luxury of 64bit files. I've got the files converted to distributed files no
problem, but I'm trying to get my head round file sizing. Do I need to
maintain the file sizing against the DF header file, or against each of the
part files defined within the DEFINE.DF ommand?

Thanks

[U2] [UD] BSELECT @SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE anomaly

2007-06-22 Thread Moderator

REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER ADDRESS: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'd looking for feedback on @SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE as returned from BSELECT of a
multivalue attribute.

Run the following basic code in the UniData demo account:

CMD = 'BSELECT CUSTOMER TAPES_RENTED'
CRT CMD
EXECUTE CMD
CRT '@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE = ':@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE
CLEARSELECT

When I run it, I get:

BSELECT CUSTOMER TAPES_RENTED

36 records selected to list 0.

@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE = 29

Note that 29 is the number of records in CUSTOMER; 36 is then number of
items in the returned active select list.

The questions: Is there any way a program could depend on
@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE being incorrect some of the time? Would anyone want
@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE to be the number records polled and not number of
items in the returned list, even if the number of items returned is 0?

   Tom Pellitieri has noted that the digest often shows e-mails out of

[U2] Phantoms not working

2007-06-28 Thread Moderator
REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER ADDRESS: DMeerholz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Anyone got any ideas what the problem here could be?
I installed uniVerse on a FedoracCore 6 box the other day, got everything
working fine... I thought, until i realised today that the phantoms aren't
running.

I have a little BP program TEST.XXX, only code in it is PRINT 1,
compiled and cataloged.
PHANTOM TEST.XXX

This is the output in the PH file.

LIST.ITEM PH LIKE ...XXX... 03:43:59pm  28 Jun 2007  PAGE1
001 Unable to execute the operating system file bin/uv.
002 [ENOENT] No such file or directory

1st I thought I just need to add the /usr/ibm/uv path to my global paths for
linux, but checked another box and it wasnt part of the paths.
Then I thought permissions, but permissions on the file are exactly the same a
the working box.
I then tried making a little script that would send it straight to /usr/ibm/uv
and execute bin/uv like it seemed it was trying to do... I
placed this in the account that I was running the program, but then the phantom
basically starts a session for you... PH output...

LIST.ITEM PH LIKE ...XXX... 03:43:52pm  28 Jun 2007  PAGE1

So thats not it either...

Anyone got any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks.

 That's one for Accuterm - Accuterm supports connectivity to U2 rather than vice-versa.

 Try using Dynamic Connect - if that works then the problem is with the Accuterm software, possibly with the DL software version included in this case.

 If DC does not work on a straight telnet outside SSH and you have a valid database license for DL then either you have a (very old) version; the version of DC is out of step with the database; or you have something else getting in the way.

 Device Licensing exchanges tokens between client and server using credentials obtained from the client (see SYSTEM(51)). If this information is being denied or trashed in some way then that would explain it to some extent.

 If DC works direct and not via SSH compare SYSTEM(51) between the two. I have assumed that you are using the correct DL shell if you are on Unix .. uv, uvsh and udt will not cut it.

 If however DC does not work within SSH - and it *does* work outside SSH then you have an issue with something SSH is doing. This may not be an easy one to resolve.

 Of course there is always SSL (included with the U2 clients and int he databases), Default port 992 I recall.

What I was told is that IBM (one person) changed their mind - their main
concern was not allocating enough of a SAN to the DB application and sharing
with lots of other applications and complaining about I/O speed.

Brian,

There are at least three more: /.uvhome , /.unishared
and the spool directory /etc/spool/uv, although you may place that
anywhere via the configuration in uv.

Hi,
Are there any NFA users out there that can help me with an issue?
I 'd like to copy 10 files from our production server to our test server. The
problem is that NFA doesn't allow me to use the ECL command COPY. I don't want
to run through every file copying record by record since that will take some
time and it's not a neat solution. We are also implementing RFS so we can't use
unix copy. Does anyone have a way to solve this I'd be glad.

One thing everyone should remember when using find is that it is best to
specify the exact directory that you want it to work on.

cd /ud/production/_PH_
find . -mtime +90 -exec rm {} \;

That works fine if you are manually typing it in and have confirmed that you
are in the proper directory.

But a dangerous problem arises if you are running the find command in a script
or you neglect to verify what directory you are in. The . tells find to start
searching in the current directory.

For example:

#!/bin/ksh

cd /ud/production/_PH_
find . -mtime +90 -exec rm {} \;

The above script works perfectly until the directory structure is changed or a
drive mount fails to mount. What happens then is that the cd line fails but the
find command is still active in the script. Then the find command then starts
executing in whatever directory the script is running in. If it is a cron job
run by root then the active directory is: /

The find command will then go through the entire disk happily deleting any file
older than 90 days and before you know it, you have a lot of extra drive space.

To stop that from happening always specify what directory that you want find to
start looking in, don't use the ., instead type it in like this:

find /ud/production/_PH_ -mtime +90 -exec rm{} \;

Sure, it is a little bit more typing but in the long run it will save you a lot
of extra work restoring files.

Here is how I script my routines to purge old files:

#!/bin/ksh
if cd /ud/production/_PH_
then
 find /ud/production/_PH_ -mtime +90 -exec rm {} \;
else
 echo Directory is missing
fi

If the /ud/production/_PH_ directory is missing or unmounted the script does
nothing more than print Directory is missing, it skips the find command
altogether. The find command specifically states what directory to work in also.

REPOSTED FOR NON-MEMBER ADDRESS: MACK ANDREW, MR [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all

I am setting up a new UV production server. UV 10.1.18 on Windows Server
2003, INFORMATION flavour. Access is via QVTTerm. On the existing prod
server, when you enter your enterprise login ID at the server login, UV
up cases the login ID and presents it to the UV.LOGINS file. However, on
the new server it is changing the login ID to lower case. Since all our
apps expect upper case, this is very frustrating.

For example, on the existing server I login as auser14 and a Who at TCL
shows KIWI\AUSER14. UV.LOGINS is:

Record Key :AUSER14
001 DOMAIN:KIWI
002 LOCAL  :
003 DOMAIN.ACCOUNT   :D:\DATA\USERS
004 LOCAL.ACCOUNT  :
005 DESC   :Andrew Mack
End of record

On the new server. I login as auser14 and a Who at TCL shows
KIWI\auser14. If I login as AUSER14, a Who at TCL shows KIWI\auser14. I
have to have UV.LOGINS records in both AUSER14 and auser14 otherwise it
falls over with the error Unable to find user account information in
the UV.LOGINS file.

Could someone please advise what setting determines the case that UV
works with?

Thank you

Jeff,
   [AD] brackets [AD\] are required, even when just trying to be
helpful, once you start touting the usage and features of a commercial
product.

We have just completed a new release of FAST, release 6. It has a
feature that will help your situation. Our expert mode executable,
fastbatch, has a new option -acct xxx -- xxx can be an account
pathname or the name of a list of accounts. FAST will, at run time,
create a dynamic list of all hashed files in the account(s) and process
them. This allows you to run the Gather Statistics and Type Analysis
processes and make sure any new files are picked up. Then after
reviewing the FAST recommendations you can either resize according to
FAST's recommendations or override / modify as you wish.

I think that had Jeff initiated the discussion of FAST as a solution
to the original problem, the need to delineate the discussion as an
advertisement would, indeed, be obvious. However, as the original
poster mentioned having FAST, I took Jeff's comments as helping the
originator make use of tools they already had, rather than encouraging
the purchase of a commercial product.

Having said that, the nature of this list will often include such grey
areas, and I think it advisable for posters to consider the various
ways their comments can be interpreted, and act accordingly.

I am new to .NET and uniobjects for .net and have been given the task of
writing a web based program that can pull data out of our universe
database. I am running AIX 5.2 Universe 10.1.7. My question is to make
sure I'm using session's and files appropriately.

1st - Is there anyway to implement something like connection pooling in
a C# .NET 2005 web application?? So far I have read that it only works
in a windows application. I want to have some way of calling a
connection to the DB once, perform many read operations and then close
the session. I don't have enough licenses, to maintain an open session
for each user that accesses my program.

2nd - After I read a file, is there anything I need to do (like closing
the file)? If not, when do I need to close the file?

jj,

SCR is the Security Context Record used by the udtelnetd process. It
should be listed in the udteletd.conf file in the unishared directory.
Check out the docs on Configuring SSL for Telnet in the Administering
UniData on UNIX manual. That can probably give you better guidance
than can I!  ;-)
