Re: need help, please

2022-11-12 Thread PCS

Dear Marie,

I’ve had the 'do you want to reopen' or 'do you want to recover' messages from
time to time, but the recovery has always worked for me so I’ve never had to
fix your problem. But I offer the following suggestions:

1. Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that clears the problem?
My apologies for stating the obvious, but just in case you are an ‘always on’
person and that slipped your mind.

2. If the app is really stuck and nobody else offers a better solution, I
would uninstall OpenOffice (i.e. drag it from the apps folder to the trash) and
then download and install a fresh copy of the app. (And hope that the problem
doesn’t carry through in any settings or extensions that weren’t replaced when
you replaced the app.) I’m still using ADSL internet so it takes a while to
download a new copy of an app, but it’s probably better to just do that than to
spend even more time and personal energy chasing a ‘better’ solution.

3. In the unlikely event that installing a virgin copy of OpenOffice
doesn’t fix the problem, I would try replacing OO with LibreOffice, on the
chance that might fix it.

I haven’t been down into the engine room of a Mac since OS-X replaced the
Classic OS, but simple work-arounds like these usually work for me when I have
a problem that has to be fixed and I don’t know how to fix it. It may be
equivalent to using a sledge hammer instead of precision tools, but if it works
without doing any damage, then why not use it?

Peter.

This often happens when there was a hasty shutdown or crash of the computer.
Click on the Apple icon and select Force Quit. Close any program/app other than
Finder that is running. Then look in the folder that you store files in for
files that have ~lock. in their name and delete them (probably just the problem
file). Restart your computer, start OpenOffice, and then open the file.

Make sure you let the program completely shut down before shutting down your
computer. Also get in the habit of saving your files and shutting down
OpenOffice when you are walking away from your computer for extended periods of
time.

As a courtesy to you I have sent you a copy of this message. As a courtesy to

Open Office 4.1.11 as well as 4.1.9.

"This installation package could not be opened.
Verify that the package exists and that you
can access it, or contact the application vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Watched several videos on YouTube but haven't
come across one showing me how to fix this error.

The Readme file suggested installing Java that I did.

If someone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

*Pervaiz "PK" Karim*

Ego and egotism are two things entirely. We each have an ego, as defined by
Freud - it is our thinking mind's sense of identity. Egotism, however,
is a symptom
of a fearful mind. When, through personal growth, the mind is increasingly
created by our loving source, then ego becomes transparent. The reactive
ego tends to be negative, the mindful presence to be positive.
Which is the true you?

*“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what **it
takes to sit down and listen.”* ~ Winston Churchill
Why courage to listen? Because we are opening up to alternative ideas and as
a result our precious beliefs and fixed ideas may be threatened and our ego
rightness put in question. But without genuine listening there is no chance
of real progress being made. To move ahead, we need not be afraid to speak
from the heart nor to listen generously.

*“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”* ~ Lao Tzu

*“If we want to awaken, we don't need to eradicate the ego, we simply **need
to be conscious of the deeper self as well.”* ~ Timothy Freke

Need help with cascading spreadsheet inserts

2021-10-09 Thread K Salisbury
Dear OO,
I'm using OO for creating a book to contain a collection of 8,600
dictionary entries that are in spreadsheet format. (My previous collection,
of 7,000 entries, was accepted and complimented by the President of Wolfson
College, Oxford University. It's a novel type of collection. 48-hour
Books made the finished book from the pdf I made using OO.)
*The Problem:*
I place a section of the spreadsheet on each page of the text document,
within the margins. It often happens that two or more sections of
spreadsheet will cascade into a mess, leaving several blank text pages
below them. It seems to happen if I try to adjust the position of the
spreadsheet section on the text page.

I've tried to figure out the problem, but cannot be 100% sure. Can you
kindly advise me?

.)

If you have an existing .csv file, OpenOffice assumes you want the
same settings, so doesn't ask. When you use File | Save As..., you
need to tick "Edit filter settings" at the foot of the Save As
dialogue to stimulate the dialogue you need.

I trust this helps.

The first question you need to answer is why you need to keep the
data in .csv format. If you save your document as a spreadsheet, your
problem will disappear.

I am able to get that accomplished in open office, but once I save
as a csv file again, it reverts back to the original file where they
are hidden. Can someone please help me with this?

If you have to use .csv format (and I'm yet to be convinced that you
do), the solution is simple:

o Ensure the cells containing your codes are formatted as Text.
o When saving, in the Export Text File dialogue, ensure "Quote all
text cells" is ticked.
o When reopening, in the Text Import dialogue, under "Other options",
ensure "Quoted field as text" is ticked.

I trust this helps.

Re: I need help!

2021-04-12 Thread JD
One solution is to changes the leading zeros to
upper case letter O.
Not an ideal solution, but
the problem is with the CSV formatter, which treats
zip codes as an arithmetic number, where leading zeros
have no arithmetic value, so they are omitted.

Re: French judges using OpenOffice - need help create a document template with "fields"

2020-09-08 Thread Hagar Delest

I used to use it a little bit in the past.
The trick is that the wording is rather confusing. Actually:
To create the field to be edited: Insert → Fields → Other → Variables →
Type=User field → Format=Text → Name=Give_it_a_name →
Value=what_you_want, then click Insert.
To insert the field in several places in the document: Insert → Fields →
Other → Variables → Type=Input field → Selection=The_field
created_previously → Reference=Don't_know_what_it_is_for → Insert. Do
that as many time you need the field to be repeated. It can be pasted also.

To edit the content of the field, double-click the first instance of
User field inserted.

If you need the field to be edited wherever in the document (all
instances will be updated at once), then only insert the same User field
in multiple places.

Don't know what the Reference field is really for in those dialogs (adds
a title to the input dialog but what's the point?).
When inserting the Input field, a dialog appears but it occurs only at
this time (you can change the value of the field or leave it as it is).
Double-clicking it afterwards does nothing at all.

French judges using OpenOffice - need help create a document template with "fields"

2020-09-07 Thread marketing1...@outlook.com
Dear all,

I am a French judge presiding over court hearings in Boulogne Billancourt, a
Paris’ suburb.

As many of my colleagues, I use OpenOffice to write jugements, courts’
décisions on motions, etc…

As many of my colleagues, I am struggling to create models for documents that
should be filled out using templates with « fields ».

I would be grateful if you could provide me with some advices or technical help
to do so. The document should have at its top an « instrument panel »
containing the « fields » grouped in topics.

I am available for video conference on Skype / Zoom / WhatsApp.

Sincerely yours,

Frédéric Carteron

Need help with inch bar across the top of page. The setting is at 54% and I would know how to change it to 100%. Don't know how it was changed. Thanks for your help.

Hello,

I've tried looking on Community Support Forum and am not having success.

I am running HP Windows Vista to create and edit this document in Open
Office 4.1.3. Thus far, it's been the only document I've had difficulty with.
Maybe it's important to know the document was originally created (same computer
and OO version) april 28, 2016 and has been saved and added to since that date.
Recently, within the past week or so, I opened the document, added an entry,
then I believe closed and saved the document. I unplugged the computer to move
it to another room. When I attempted to open the document (which was
approximately 14 pages in length??), it now shows up as row upon row of
###. And a message box comes up asking for ASCII Filter Options. No matter
what I seem to put in (I'm in United States, Massachusetts) it still comes up
with #.

On the Community Support page posts from maybe 2016, it said to try
opening a new blank document and then choose Insert file. Still . I've
tried to cut a portion of the into a new OO document but that doesn't fix
the problem either.

I've uninstalled the 4.1.3 version. I attempted to install the 4.1.7?
version but I don't know if this is correct or what operating system to choose.
Should I just look for the 4.1.3 version and try reinstalling that - hoping
that will fix my ### document problem??

Thank you,
Mary Lippoth

An OpenOffice file showing ### is utterly corrupt and there will be no usable
information in it.  Use the information below to attempt to find a complete or
partial copy, or revert to a backup copy.

The file is damaged beyond repair, possibly due to disconnection from the
remote location because of connection failure before the file was fully
transmitted, or over hasty power off of your computer or closure of laptop lid,
before the file housekeeping had been transmitted

As soon as possible try the methods in this tutorial

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038

for detailed instructions on how to

a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the
file.

b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was
when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;

c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which
have since been deleted;

d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and
then deleted.  This may recover your file as it was when you last opened or you
last saved it.

It would be cool if someone can jump in who speaks Cambodian ...

No such beast, I think: the official language of Cambodian is Khmer.

... or can point me to a Cambodian Resource how to handle the gatekeeper.

o Go to Google Translate (e.g. https://translate.google.com/ ).
o Paste in the left panel the URL http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290 .
o In the right panel, select Khmer as the language.
o Click on the identical URL in the right panel.
o Follow the instructions in the last section (headed "How to open an
app that hasn't been notarized or is from an unidentified developer"
in the English version).

Or persuade your correspondent to do this.

The images will still be in English, of course, but they should be
close enough to whatever he is seeing to be helpful.

I trust this helps.

I already posted the link to the English forum with the article. (we had a wiki

It sounds as if your text is in a table, which is a format of cells
in columns and rows - yes, in appearance much like a spreadsheet. Put

I trust this helps.

Need help!

2019-02-05 Thread Ben Levitan LLC

I use OpenOffice exclusively for my business and really need some help. It's
so unstable on Window 10 that I'm ready to give up. I've reloaded it a number
of times but still very flaky. I do a lot of documents with 10 or so figures
(JPG or similar) and that is a big problem. OO often inserts the figures 100's
of times in the same spot. When we do "Accept Changes" the system often
crashes. Doing it one by seems to work. The documents are about 60 pages long.

I am at wits end and need to have someone look at these documents and tell me
what's wrong? Is there somewhere I can get paid support?

OpenOffice has only a record of the last 10 recent documents.
You find this under the File menu. If you moved documents with the file
explorer OpenOffice has no idea where to find it.

Lucky you should be able with the search option from your Operating System.

Good choice, but as far as I know printers don’t keep a record of what they
have printed.

Need Help with Calc =LARGE( ) Function

2018-03-09 Thread Vince@GMAIL

AOO415m1(Build:9789)  -  Rev. 1817496
2017-12-11 17:25  on WIN10-64 Desktop

_

Hi:

I am working with the data set shown below, at bottom.

Cells E4:T4 contain the names of 13 players.  Cells E32:T43 contain the
score numerical data of interest. I used the =LARGE($E$32:$T$43;1) thru
=LARGE($E$32:$T$43;9) to calculate the nine highest scores within the
score data of interest, and obtained the following results:

__
_POSITION_ _HIGHEST SCORES__Player Name_
1 233
2 222
3 194
4 188
5 185
6 179
7 176
8 174
9 184

I need to correlate the player's name with the HIGHEST SCORE, and fill
in the Player Name column.  E.g., Position 1 shows a score of 233 (in
cell F13) and that was by player whose name is Bob M. (in cell F4).

Is there a Calc function that will "look up" the appropriate name in Row
4 for each of the remaining HIGHEST SCORES and display in the Player
Name column?

There is no telephone support for OpenOffice - it is a free program, and
support is from volunteers,

I have been using open office now for several years. I really like the program.
It is great.

Recently (about 2 weeks now) it is giving me problems. I downloaded 4.1.2 to
upgrade to a newer version. I have downloaded and uninstalled this program 4
times now. I follow the instructions correctly. When I go to use it the program
will state that it is not responding. I have gone back to 4.1.1 and downloaded
it now several times. Again it states that it is not responding. It states that
the document is recovered and to push next to report it or to cancel to skip
that process. I have done it both ways and it still states that the program is
not responding. Could you please help me to fix this problem.

I do legal, accounting and resume typing for people. I really like this program

Users of Windows are less likely to look at help files than users of Mac
OS X, and users of Linux are more likely to look at help files.

I'll grant that that data is a decade old, and that help-file habits for
desktop usage might have changed since then. However, I'd hypothesize
that any change is towards what happens on mobile devices --- the user

Perhaps changing the fourth step on:
http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/faq/installing/ooo.html to include
specific instructions on opening AOO for the first time. Someone in a
hurry/panic may not have the patience to read all the way down:

Yes, understanding how Gatekeeper works is important for a Mac user to know but
we should be making it easier for users of AOO to use AOO.

But surely this is unnecessarily complicated advice? Read the Apple

There is no point in going through the complicated process of

How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from

Mary Ann;

Without more particulars as to what is happening it is difficult to
offer definitive advise; however this sounds like a known problem. The
following from the Release Notes for version 4.0.1 gives the solution to
this issue.
On recent versions of Mac OS X it might happen, especially after a
Force quit, that the following error message appears: Restore
Windows - The application OpenOffice.org was forced to quit while
trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its
windows again?. If you cannot get rid of it: Option-click the Go
menu; choose Library from the menu to open the folder in the

 file org.openoffice.script.savedState.

OpenOffice is not a company, no offices, no phone. Is a community and a
project, you are free to use it, test it and distribute it.

You can also hire support from companies that do professional support for
it. They do have a phone number:
http://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html

We would need more information in order to determine when and how does the
Freeze happens. It could be a third party application interrupting on the
closing process. Please give us the version of OpenOffice that you are
using, the current one is 4.1.1.

As OpenOffice on Windows is a 32 bit application, you must install a 32 bit
Java (flagged as 586 on Java.com) and select it in OpenOffice /Tools /Options
/OpenOffice(.org) /Java.

The best selection is Java 1.7 - 1.8 will work, but needs file tweaking of
which I have no detailed knowledge.

I do seem to recall visiting the Java website and doing an update; but did not
reselect within AOO, which at present shows only one JRE listed. However, when
first getting this Win8 machine, DELL Tech Support did walk me through

I am in need of some help. I went to the forum site and registered. I wanted

This is my problem. Could you tell me where to find help.

I have Open Office version 3.4.0 (April 2011) and my Mac has OS X Yosemite
10.10.1

I mostly used the write feature. I tried to quit Open Office but keep getting
this window. “The last time you opened Ooo -dev it unexpectedly quit
while reopening windows.” Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If
you choose to reopen windows you have
to open and position the window yourself. Don’t Open / Reopen. “

No matter which button I select I can not close the box. If I manually shut
the machine off the same box reappears. I can not print, copy,
save, etc. in Open Office. I can not even delete the program because it says
the program is still open. Tried to download a new version but it will not
work … maybe it will not override the old program.

I tried looking at the forums and its seems that others have the same problem.
They have a solution but I can not figure what they are
referring to or talking about. I am not a techie so I need step by step help
with specific instructions.

Hoping someone out there in Open Office Land can help me.

No matter which button I select I can not close the box. If I manually shut

save, etc. in Open Office.

I'm not at all sure what you are suggesting here. OpenOffice is
neither a gun nor an engine, so it won't commonly misfire. And if
software does go wrong, you can hardly predict what it will do.

We all know that if OpenOffice thinks it has the appropriate
dictionary installed, a corrupted user profile can prevent it
operating correctly and make it flag all words as misspelled. (And
the original questioner confirmed that this was his problem and
solution, in fact.) But that's a language *match*, not a mismatch. In
the case of a mismatch - surely where there is no dictionary to
match the declared language? - nothing is flagged. Even though one
could expect it to, simply not having the correct dictionary
installed does not create this error. Unless you've seen reports of
behaviour the rest of us haven't, that is ...

You talk about a language detection routine as if this sets the
language for text, but surely it limits itself to the languages it
offers in the Status Bar and the menus? Since it doesn't itself set
the language, it cannot affect any flagging of supposedly misspelled words.

What's wrong apparently is that there must be bug in the software.
This complaint seems to surface about once a week or so. Why don't
you file a bug report with OpenOffice. Then send another one to

We can do better than just say just there must be a bug. Clearly
something has gone wrong and it may be considered a bug in the
application that this happens. But it is well understood that this
situation occurs when the OpenOffice user profile becomes corrupt -
for whatever reason - and there are simple ways to correct the problem.

By all means submit bug reports, but in order to be of any help you
would probably need to determine what documents or what specific
actions in OpenOffice were likely to cause profile corruption. When
you do so, and can explain this in your bug reports, I'm sure many
people will be delighted. Good luck!

For what it's worth, this is surely not true? If OpenOffice correctly
determines that no spelling dictionary is installed for the marked
language of any text, then it will not be able to check the text and
should (and generally will) fail to mark anything as misspelled. (You
can confirm this very easily by the simple test of marking some text
- anything will do - as being in a language for which you do not have
a spelling dictionary installed.) That's a different problem from the
one described here (where everything, not nothing, is marked as
wrong) - which is likely to be caused by corruption of the user profile.

As an initial troubleshooting step, reset your OpenOffice user profile see:

http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?p=58403

This will reset all your preferences to default (rename or copy the
current profile before it.

What error message do you get? If you get ASCII filter message, your file is
damaged; being passworded, forget it. If you get password prompt, remember that
passwords are case sensitive so try variations on what you remember. OO
passwords are nearly unbreakable - it may take days/weeks of your computer time.

template with table - need help

2014-07-03 Thread Julian Thomas
I've created a template consisting of a table (5 rows 2 columns). Each cell
contains 3 frames - two of which are constant for all rows and one of which is
for entry of variable information.

How can I use this for a multipage document and have my fixed information
replicated after the first page?

(Ideally I'd like to use the template as a label template for mail merge, but
can't figure out how to do this).

I think you could try this: open a new document. Define a new page style and on
it place your table, with the frames anchored in the header or footer; save
this file as a one page file. Each time you want a table of that sort, make a
copy of this file, insert the data in your table and use /File /Insert to
insert the filled in single page file. Because subsequent files using that
Page Style will echo the header/footer information the frames need only be
filled in on the first occurrence of the table page.

Re: template with table - need help

2014-07-03 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi Julian,

Have you tried the Label wizard from File New Labels? You need not
use the predefined labels but you can generate your own layout in the
tab Format and save it there with an own identifier.

Mail merge works so, that only one page is designed, but the mail merge
printing will generate as much pages as needed for all selected records.

Put you fixed parts directly into this page and get the variable parts
from a database.

If you struggle with the wizard, do not hesitate to ask here.

Kind regards
Regina

All you have to do is to create a header (or footer) in your page
style and then to insert all the frames into the header. Note that
all this does is to anchor the frames in the header: they can still
be positioned (possibly by dragging) wherever you need them on the
page. Since the frames are anchored in the header, they will
automatically reappear, along with their content, on each page. The
header itself does not need to encroach on your page text area, as
you can adjust some combination of the header height, the header
spacing, and the top margin of the page to remove its effect on the
final appearance.

When you move to a new page, either by natural text flow or by
inserting a manual page break (with no change of page style), the
frames will all reappear on your new page. You can create an
identical table around them or you can choose to copy the first page
to the second, amending the variable text as necessary. To avoid
needing to delete or replace the variable text, you could choose to
copy the first page to a second (and so on, similarly), before you
added the variable text to the first (and each) page.

I trust this helps.
