[ovirt-users] Re: Need help recovering ovirt engine (was: New Management VLAN for hyperconverged cluster)

2021-04-12 Thread Vincent Royer
In the beginning, I made this same mistake. I setup all my networks,
bonds, vlans, and tried to deploy the engine from cockpit. This never
worked properly. Eventually I decided to leave the networks as simple as
possible - just a static IP on a single interface for management, and same
for Gluster. Then I setup the networks the way I wanted inside the 'setup
host networks' window, and then 'sync all networks'. This worked much
better, and now it's pretty easy to add VLANs as required.

[ovirt-users] Re: Power failure makes cluster and hosted engine unusable

2021-03-30 Thread Vincent Royer
Seann,

If this happens again, try doing nothing (seriously) Each time I've had a
power failure, the engine takes a really long time to come back up. I
don't know if it's by design or what. Host logs are flooded with errors,
everything seemingly storage related. However, my Gluster setup is on fast
SSDs and gets back and running pretty much straight away. It takes maybe 5
minutes for the nodes to re-join and the volumes to show 'UP' with no
heals. However, it still takes the hosted-engine a good hour or two to
simmer down and finally start up.

Sometimes I try to help by restarting ha-broker and ha-agent, or plunking
in other random commands from the mess of documentation, but it seems to
sort itself out on its own time, regardless of my tinkering.

I wish I could get more insight into the process, but definitely, doing
nothing and waiting has been the most successful troubleshooting step I
have taken.

Cheers!

[ovirt-users] Re: Error hosted-engine: Engine status: {"reason": "bad vm status", "health": "bad", "vm": "down_unexpected", "detail": "Down"}

2021-03-08 Thread Vincent Royer
For me, what happens every few months is the Hosted Engine fills up its
/var/log, specifically the httpd folder. Once this partition is full, the
HE only runs for a few seconds before shutting down and trying a different
host. Obviously that makes no difference, so it just starts & stops over
and over until the log dir is emptied. so do a hosted_engine --vm-stop, and
then --vm-start. SSH into it and take a look at the partitions disk space.

[ovirt-users] Re: Node upgrade to 4.4

2020-09-24 Thread Vincent Royer via Users
It's a bit disheartening that HCI users don't have an easier upgrade path.

So far there's a lot of 'this might work' or' that might work', and good
luck. Certainly doesn't inspire much confidence.

Every time there is a survey asking what the pain points are, I say
"updates!!", but they seem to be getting more and more complicated.

My confusion is that those documents do not describe any gluster related
tasks for Ovirt Nodes. When I take a node down and install Ovirt Node 4.4
on it, won't all the gluster bricks on that node be lost? The part
describing "preserving local storage", that isn't anything about Gluster,

[ovirt-users] update node 4.3.5 to 4.3.6

2019-10-08 Thread Vincent Royer
Ovirt node on 4.3.5. Was installed from 4.3.5 iso and has never been updated

GUI said update available for hosts. Here's what I did:

- Global HA maintenance
- yum update and engine-upgrade-check engine-setup of hosted engine
- engine now at Version 4.3.6.7-1.el7
- put node 1/3 into maintenance (vms migrate off)
- update host in gui until it says its done
- reboot node

The node reboots but is still at 4.3.5

So I try manually:

yum update

 CentOS-fasttrack.repo CentOS-Media.repo CentOS-Sources.repo
 CentOS-Vault.repo ovirt-4.3-dependencies.repo ovirt-4.3.repo

[ovirt-users] Re: Where to configure iscsi initiator name?

2019-08-21 Thread Vincent Royer
You have to add all the initiators for each node to the iscsi LUN. At
least thats how I got it working. Then I think it's recommended to setup
multipath.

However take this with a grain because iscsi did not work well for me.

2019-08-06 Thread Vincent Royer
I also am spanned over two switches. You can use bonding, you just can't
use 802.3 mode.

I have MGMT bonded to two gig switches and storage bonded to two 10g
switches for Gluster. Each switch has its own fw/router in HA. So we can
lose either switch, either router, or any single interface or cable without
interruption.

I tried deployment of 4.3.5.1 using teams and it didn't work. I did get
into the engine using the temp url on the host, but the teams showed up as
individual nics. Any changes made, like assigning a new logical network to
the nic, failed and I lost connectivity.

Setup as a bond instead of team before deployment worked as expected, and
the bonds showed up properly in the engine.

I'd say yes, I blow away nodes and reinstall them often, as workarounds for
various upgrade failures.

If you spend more than 20 mins troubleshooting it's more time efficient to
just start over.

Running Node 4.2.8, should the kernel parameter be enough, or do I need to

[ovirt-users] Re: Huge Pages

2019-02-15 Thread Vincent Royer
Thanks, I saw that article and it is a hit helpful, but still I don't see
how I can tell how many huge pages and of which size my host supports in
the first place.

Do all hosts support a certain number, is this calculated by available RAM?

How do I know what size and amount to specify in the kernel command line?

[ovirt-users] Huge Pages

2019-02-14 Thread Vincent Royer
How do I know how many huge pages my hosts can support?

cat /proc/meminfo | grep Huge
 AnonHugePages: 17684480 kB
HugePages_Total: 0
HugePages_Free:0
HugePages_Rsvd:0
HugePages_Surp:0

And once I know, I set the kernel parameters here, and reboot the host,
correct?

And then I assume I assign them to the VM here? How do I decide how many
huge pages and what size a particular VM can benefit from?

[ovirt-users] Re: update to 4.2.8 fails

2019-02-14 Thread Vincent Royer
Greg,

The first thing on the list in your link is to check what repos are enabled
with yum repolist, but makes no mention of what repos *should *be enabled
on node-ng, nor what to do about it if you have the wrong ones. I've never
had an Ovirt update go the way it was "supposed" to go, despite having a
bunch of documentation at hand. Usually I end up blowing away the hosts
and starting with a fresh ISO.

The page you linked makes no mention of the command Edward mentioned that
got things working for me:

yum update ovirt-node-ng-image-update

All the instructions I can find just say to run yum update, but that
resulted in a bunch of dependency errors for me, on a normal 4.2.6 node
install that I haven't touched since installation. Why? If I'm following
the instructions, shouldn't it work?

running this command in the upgrade guide:

Gives me "This system is not registered with an entitlement server". Is
that an outdated instruction? Does it apply to the particular update I'm
trying to apply? No way to tell...

What would really help is a clear separation between commands intended for
centos/RHEL and commands intended for Node. As an outsider, it's very
difficult to know. Every chapter, where there is any difference in
procedure, the documents should be split with RHEL on one side and NODE on
the other.

The documentation would also benefit from tags like dates and versions that
they apply to. "Valid for Ovirt 4.2.6 to 4.2.8 as of Feb 2, 2019".Then
the documents should be tested and the dates/versions adjusted, or the docs
adjusted, as needed.

Ovirt is awesome. But the docs are the project's worst enemy.

[ovirt-users] Re: Network Setup after ovirt node Install and before add node to cluster

2018-12-09 Thread Vincent Royer
This happened to me too.

The NIC doesn't come "up" on the first boot, even though it was initiated
during the setup. DHCP or static makes no difference to this situation.
iirc I used nmtui to bring the interface up and verify the hostname. Can't
do it in cockpit without the interface being up...

Once you're in the engine you can initialize and add the rest of the
required nics.

I'm not sure if this is as designed or a bug, but it last happened to me on
4.2.5, and was the same process on my 3 hosts.

[ovirt-users] Re: Can't install windows guest

2018-11-17 Thread Vincent Royer
you have to mount the CD drive with the virtuio drivers during the setup
process.

get to the screen to select disks. do a "change cd" and mount the virtio
ISO. then you have to go "have disk" in setup and add the drivers. Once
the drivers are installed, you have to refresh the list before it will show
the disks. once the disk is showing up then you do a change CD again back
to the installation .iso.

[ovirt-users] Migrating to Gluster HCI - Export/Import

2018-10-09 Thread Vincent Royer
I'm upgrading from 2 host w/ attached storage to 3-host HCI w/Gluster.
What is the procedure for this? Is export domain depreciated?

1. Shut down and export all VMs - Do I use export domain? Or is the
"Backup Domain" the newer method?

2. Detach domains from cluster and wipe hosts

3. Build HCI cluster, setup gluster bricks/vols

4. Attach backup domain and import VMs

Thanks!

[ovirt-users] Re: master domain wont activate

2018-10-06 Thread Vincent Royer
Oliver, one more thing about iscsi. Today the engine was running healthy
with one host, and the master domain on iscsi. 6 VMs were running on that
host alongside the HE. I reinstalled the second host with a node image, and
initiated it through the engine using "add host". I chose "none" as the
deploy/undeploy option for HE. As soon as the host came up, I lost
connection to the HE.

When it came back up some 20 mins later, all VMs were down, my previously
good host was down, and the new host was up, with hosted engine running on
it. It's as if the new host kicked the old host off the master storage
domain.

Any insight into why my Windows server iscsi setup would be behaving this
way? I have MPIO enabled on it and both hosts show "connected" as
initiators.

I rebooted the original host, and eventually both hosts did come up and
properly connected to iscsi at the same time, and both are able to run
VMs.

Can I expect this sort of instability from my iscsi setup? I'm starting to
completely lose faith in Windows Server's ability to host Ovirt storage
domains.

Thanks!

What's the storage type of your Hosted Engine Domain ?

To remove a domain, you have to put it first into maintenance, then the
(Master) status automatically switch to another domain.
If you really want to determine with destination for master domain you got,
two domains are correct,
but it's not importend where the master lives, expect the "to be removed"
domain.

Storage -> Storage Domains -> Open (your domain) -> DataCenter ->
Centername -> Right Click -> Maintenance

Now you have two Options: Detach or Destroy

Detach: OVF-FILES and Disks are not really physical removed and can't
imported later to another DC.

Storage -> Storage Domains -> Open (your domain) -> DataCenter ->
Centername -> Right Click -> Detach

Detroy: Storage would be blanked, OVF-Store Disks, thats what you want
here.

Warning migrate your all your disks first!

Storage -> Storage Domains -> Open (your domain) -> DotDotDot menu ->
Detroy

2018-10-05 Thread Vincent Royer
Right now the HE domain is old (NFS). I have created a new one (iSCSI),
nothing on it yet.

The master domain is old (NFS) but all my disks are migrated to the new one
(iSCSI).

I don't really care which of the iSCSI domains becomes the master. Just
want off of NFS.

2018-10-05 Thread Vincent Royer
thanks,

I'm trying to move away from NFS due to the poor vw performance and
problems I had with it. Hence wanting to move the master domain and HE
domains over to iscsi domains. I have now an export domain, an ISO domain,
and HostedEngine domain. From my reading, to switch master, you need to
have only 2 data domains, then put the old one into maint and it will
switch to the new one. Only then can you remove the old one... is that
not correct?

I gained access to that article by creating a dev account, didn't realize
it was free ;)

2018-10-05 Thread Vincent Royer
Alright, some combination of messing around got me mostly back up and
running here. Iscsi is working reliably, VMs are running on the new iscsi
domain. the old NFS domain is empty save a couple of OVF_STORE disks.

The procedure now, as I understand it, is to shut down all vms, put all
storage domains into maintenance except the old NFS and new SCSI domain,
then push the NFS one into maintenance, which *should* promote the ISCSI
domain to master. After that, I'll try to move the HE storage to iscsi
too, although it would be very helpful to have access to this document
<https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2998291> for that procedure.

thanks for your assistance!

Ok, getting somewhere here.

did a rpcinfo -p and found no nfs entries in portmap.

systemctl stop nfs
systemctl start nfs

Suddenly shares are mounted and datacenter is up again.

was able to add export domain over NFS.

Why would nfs shit the bed?

still can't seem to get iscsi mounted properly now, and that's where all
the disks are located :/

[ovirt-users] Re: master domain wont activate

2018-10-04 Thread Vincent Royer
Thanks for your help Oliver,

To give you some background here:

Host 1 on Ovirt 4.2 attached to NFS storage
Host 2 I upgraded to Ovirt 4.2.5 and then 4.2.6, since then it has had
troubles with NFS due to this bug
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1595549. The host was up and
could run the hosted engine, but could not migrate any VMs to it.

I decided to switch from NFS to ISCSI so that I could stay on current
releases. So I began the work of attaching iscsi domain.

The iscsi domain attached, and I transferred most of the disks to it. Then
it started melting down saying that Host 1 could not mount it, and the
whole DC went down.

Current status is data center "non responsive". Keeps trying
"Reconstructing master domain on Data Center" over and over again but
always fails. Master domain status is "inactive". Clicking activate
fails. The new ISCSI domain, I put in maintenance until I figure the rest
out. I can't add or remove any other domains, Ovirt says I need to attach
the master first.

Both hosts are "UP". Host 1 health is "bad" Host 2 health is "ok", and
it is running HE. Host 1 (the 4.2 host) says "this host needs to be
reinstalled". But the reinstall option is grayed out.

I am weary about updating host1, because of the NFS storage bug... I fear
it won't ever be able to attach the old domain again.

If I try mounting the NFS shares in cockpit from either node, they say
"mount.nfs: Remote I/O error". However on another blank centos machine
sitting on the same network, I can mount the shares normally.

[ovirt-users] master domain wont activate

2018-10-03 Thread Vincent Royer
I was attempting to migrate from nfs to iscsi storage domains. I have
reached a state where I can no longer activate the old master storage
domain, and thus no others will activate either.

I'm ready to give up on the installation and just move to an HCI deployment
instead. Wipe all the hosts clean and start again.

My plan was to create and use an export domain, then wipe the nodes and set
them up HCI where I could re-import. But without being able to activate a
master domain, I can't create the export domain.

I'm not sure why it can't find the master anymore, as nothing has happened
to the NFS storage, but the error in vdsm says it just can't find it:

[ovirt-users] ISCSI domain won't attach

2018-10-02 Thread Vincent Royer
I setup an iscsi domain in hopes of moving away from NFS. I created a new
logical network for this on a storage vlan. both hosts and storage server
grabbed a good IP on this vlan.

ISCSI Domain connected ok and I started moving disks over from the NFS
domain. Transfers were completing so I let it do its thing.

This morning, after the transfers completed, three things occurred in
quick succession:

1. Affinity Rules Enforcement Manager started.
2. Invalid status on Data Center. Setting status to Non Responsive.
3. Storage Pool Manager runs on Host brian.xxx.net (Address: brian.xxx.net),
Data Center.
4. Storage Domain domiscsi was deactivated by system because it's not
visible by any of the hosts.

Try to attach it again and it fails. Have another coffee and try to attach
again to get logs, and this time it attaches just fine.

domain disconnected vdsm log: https://pastebin.com/pfGerEE5

Successful attach operation vdsm log: https://pastebin.com/c0U07QXg

host Brian can't seem to keep the storage domain
https://pastebin.com/ySAqiqA3

both hosts seem to have connected sessions when looking from the storage
server:

Seems like it might be one problematic host, because engine keeps trying to
reboot it to get it to reconnect to the storage domain. Maybe after a few
tries it just deems the domain is bad. Not sure!

Any help is appreciated!

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt attach serial port on VM

2018-09-26 Thread Vincent Royer
Use a serial to IP converter.

I connect many ovirt VMs to USB and serial devices using IP interfaces.
They work very well and are far more flexible, as you can change which VM
the devices are connected to on the fly.

[ovirt-users] Migrating to HCI

2018-08-27 Thread Vincent Royer
I have 2 hosts using NFS storage

I want to migrate to HCI and add a third host. Have added the 10Gbe cards
and drives to the 3 target hosts and setup a separate physical network for
storage.

Can I:

- deploy a single-node HCI to host 3
- export the VMs to an NFS export domain
- Import the VMs to the HCI node
- wipe the first 2 hosts and re-deploy them to the HCI DC

Is there a guide for this?

or should I just export the VMs, blow away all the nodes, and deploy as a
3-node HCI using the wizards? I'm hoping to minimize downtime of the VMs
to under one day.

Indeed the Storage domains are via NFS served by Windows Server 2016.

the workaround says "use NFSV3", I'm afraid this will break my existing
installation. For now, all my VMs are running on one host that is still on
4.2.0.

2018-08-07 Thread Vincent Royer
Would be great to get some help with this, no VMs will start on a freshly
installed 4.2.5 node (not upgraded, installed fresh from new ISO)

I created a new VM from Centos 7 template imported from Glance repository.
It won't start, although it starts fine on my 4.2.0 host.

Error upon starting VM, error was similar to this bugzilla
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1595549>, so I commented there
with my logs.

So far the only VM that will run on the 4.2.5 host is the hosted engine.

[ovirt-users] Update to 4.2.5, Cant start VMs

2018-08-05 Thread Vincent Royer
I updated the engine, and one of my nodes to 4.2.5. I'm attempting to
re-start the VMs that were pinned to it, and migrate another VM to it so
that I can update my other node.

When I try to start the VMs that were pinned to the host, I get:

VM Tuning3 is down with error. Exit message: XML error: Multiple 'scsi'
> controllers with index '0'.

To fix this I tried to detach the disk and re-attach it, no luck.

When I try to migrate a running VM to this host, I get:

Host Letty has network interface which exceeded the defined threshold [95%]
> (bond0: transmit rate[0%], receive rate [97%])

The host I'm migrating FROM gets a similar error, and the VM does not
migrate. I tried the different migration policies without any luck.

I did successfully migrate the Hosted Engine to the new host, no errors.

Thanks for any advice!

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt reports using Grafana

2018-05-18 Thread Vincent Royer
Yes I agree, because the database contains so many version specific
pointers, all of them will stop working when you upgrade. So that's no good!

If you ever get something decent working with Grafana, I'd be very
interested. I'm still not happy with the integration with the engine
history database, I was never really able to get predictable output from
it, and spent way too many hours messing around with it.

Nodes are still on 4.2 because I can't seem to upgrade them (not getting
any replies to my other thread about this)

After the power failure, these mounts were missing on one of my nodes. I

[ovirt-users] Node health bad after power outage

2018-04-07 Thread Vincent Royer
Suffered a long power outage that outlasted our huge UPS, so both my nodes
went down.

Upon return, the nodes came back up but engine did not start because the
storage server takes longer to boot than the nodes do, so the NFS mounts
didn't reconnect.

I manually re-entered the mounts using cockpit, rebooted the nodes and the
engine came back up along with all VMs.

Now in cockpit under Node Status, It says Health: bad, and these messages:

Everything seems to be working fine though.

2018-04-05 Thread Vincent Royer
Well good, we can at least bounce ideas off each other, and I'm sure we'll
get some good advice sooner or later! Best way to get good ideas on the
internet is to post bad ones and wait ;)

In the performance and sizing guide PDF, they make this statement:

*Standard servers with 4:2 erasure coding and JBOD bricks provide superior
value in terms of throughput *
*per server cost.*

I don't know enough about erasure coding to know if that applies, but all
the graphs that involve JBOD in that document look pretty good to me.

What do you know about ZFS? Seems to be popular to use it in combination
with Gluster.

Jayme,

I'm doing a very similar build, the only difference really is I am using
SSDs instead of HDDs. I have similar questions as you regarding expected
performance. Have you considered JBOD + NFS? Putting a Gluster Replica 3
on top of RAID 10 arrays sounds very safe, but my gosh the capacity takes a
massive hit. Am I correct in saying you will only get 4TB total usable
capacity out of 24TB worth of disks? The cost per TB in that sort of
scenario is immense.

My plan is two 2TB SSDs per server in JBOD with a caching raid card, with
replica 3. I would end up with the same 4TB total capacity using 12TB of
SSDs.

I think Replica 3 is safe enough that you could forgo the RAID 10. But I'm
talking from zero experience... Would love others to chime in with their
opinions on both these setups.

[ovirt-users] Cannot update Node 4.2 to 4.2.2

2018-04-04 Thread Vincent Royer
Trying to update my nodes to 4.2.2, having a hard time.

I updated the engine, no problems. Migrated VMs off host 1 and put it into
maintenance. I do a "check upgrade" in the GUI, it finds an update, but
fails to install.

Drop to CLI and try to do it manually

yum update -y

I get lots of dependency errors for missing packages. A quick google
shows that I may have the incorrect RPMs installed, and should only have
the ovirt-node-ng-image and appliance rpms. So I try to install only those.

So I think I have the right rpms now

But now when I do a yum update it says there are no packages marked for
update.

How to fix this? Is there anything I have done wrong that I shouldn't do
on my other hosts?

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt engine HA

2018-04-02 Thread Vincent Royer
Same thing, the engine in this case is "self-hosted", as in, it runs in a
VM hosted on the cluster that it is managing. I am a beginner here, but
from my understanding, each node is always checking on the health of the
engine VM. If the engine is missing (ie, the host running it has gone
down), then another available, healthy host will spawn up the engine and
you will regain access.

In my experience this has worked very reliably. I have 2 hosts, both are
"able" to run the engine VM. If I take one host down, I am not able to
load the engine GUI. But if I wait a few minutes, then I regain access,
and see that the engine is now running on the remaining healthy host.

If your node running self-hosted engine crashes, the hosted engine will be
started up on another node. It just takes a few minutes for this all to
happen, but it works reliably in my experience.

Re: [ovirt-users] Which hardware are you using for oVirt

2018-03-31 Thread Vincent Royer
Lots of great hardware knowledge in this thread! I'm also making the move
to 10Gb.

I'm adding a 3rd host to my deployment and moving to Glusterfs on 3 nodes,
from my current NFS share on a separate storage server.

Each of the 3 nodes has dual E5-2640 V4s with128Gb ram. I have some
hardware choices I would love some advice about:

- Should I use Intel X520-DA2 or X710-DA2 nics for the storage network? No
significant price difference. The hosts are running oVirt Node 4.2. I
hope to use them in bridge mode so that I don't need a 10Gbe switch. I do
have a single 10Gbe port left on my router.

- the hosts have 12Gbps 520i SAS cards, should I spec 6 or 12 Gbps SSD
drives? Here there is a large price difference, also large difference
between Enterprise performance, Enterprise mainstream, and Enterprise
entry. I'm not sure how to estimate the value of those different options
in a Glusterfs deployment.

The workload is pretty I/O intensive with fairly small read/write
operations (under 128Kb) on windows VMs.

Any obvious weak links with this plan?

[ovirt-users] Resilient Storage for Ovirt

2018-03-23 Thread Vincent Royer
Hi,

I have a 2 node cluster with Hosted Engine attached to a storage Domain
(NFS share) served by WS2016. I run about a dozen VMs.

I need to improve availability / resilience of the storage domain, and also
the I/O performance.

Anytime we need to reboot the Windows Server, its a nightmare for the
cluster, we have to put it all into maintenance and take it down. When the
Storage server crashes (has happened once) or Windows decides to install an
update and reboot (has happened once), the storage domain obviously goes
down and sometimes the hosts have a difficult time re-connecting.

I can afford a second bare metal server and am looking for input in the
best way to provide a highly available storage domain. Ideally I'd like to
be able to reboot either storage server without disrupting Ovirt. Should I
be looking at clustering with Windows Server, or moving to a different OS?

I currently run the Storage in RAID10 (spinning discs) and have the option
of adding CacheCade to the array w/ SSD. Would that help I/O for small
random R/W?

What are the suggested options for this scenario?

Thanks

well this is frustrating. I added the read only user, but still can't
connect.

ok thanks, I did see it there but assumed that was a temp file. I updated
it according to the instructions, but I still get the same error.

hostovirt_engine_history grafana ::0/0   md5

did a systemctl restart postgresql.service and I get "Unit not found". So
I did systemctl restart ovirt-engine.service...

and the error I get when accessing from 172.16.30.10 is:

[ovirt-users] Postgresql read only user difficulties

2018-03-17 Thread Vincent Royer
Hi,

I followed these instructions on Ovirt self hosted engine 4.2.1:

https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/data-warehouse/Allowing_Read_Only_Access_to_the_History_Database/

when connecting to the db from an external host I receive this error:

pq: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "", user "", database
"ovirt_engine_history", SSL off

I looked in the normal place for pg_hba.conf but the file does not exist,
/data does not exist in /var/lib/pgsql

Do i need to run engine-setup again to configure this?

Thank you!

Re: [ovirt-users] Installing Windows - no virtio-win.vfd as floppy option

2018-02-22 Thread Vincent Royer
Sure, feel free to reach out, I just did a big windows deployment and there
were lots of hurdles to overcome, but it does work well in the end. I used
the console during windows install, but I was doing it remotely, in an RDP
session with a server on-site. So the mouse control was all out of whack,
I had to keyboard through the setup. Once windows is installed and joined
to the domain, you can RDP into it and it's much more bearable to operate
than the console method.

Re: [ovirt-users] Confused by logical networks

2018-02-22 Thread Vincent Royer
I had similar confusion, and trying to assign static IPs was just not
working for me.

Here is how I got it to work:

#1 you absolutely require a DNS server you can add entries to. I tried to
go without, and it just does not work.

For me, management network is on vlan 10, so each host grabs a 172.16.10.xx
address. The oVirt engine (self hosted) also grabs an address in this
subnet. I look in the DHCP leases and turn those into static assignments in
the router, but left the config on the hosts to DHCP. Add those IPs to
your DNS so that you can reach each host, and the engine, at
hostname.domain.net (or whatever your fully qualified domain name is for
each)

Now, set your VM network to DHCP on a different, specific VLAN. Set that
vlan up in your router with a small DHCP pool, only big enough for the VMs
you want to run. Make sure you allow that vlan through to the switchports
connected to the nic you are using for your VMs.

For me, the VMs are on vlan 30, so the subnet is 172.16.30.xx. Each VM
boots up, makes a DHCP request on vlan 30, and is assigned an address.
Then again go into your router and make this a static entry, leaving the
config in the VM to DHCP. Once you install the agent in the VM, the IP
will show up in the engine GUI. Then you can assign an FQDN to each vm's
IP I'm your DNS server.

Set up this way, I can migrate the VM to whichever host, and still access
it over RDP by it's FQDN.

I also have dual NICs but I set mine up as a team (bridge) instead of one
for MGMT and one for VMs. That way, I can also unplug anyone Ethernet
cable from any machine, and nothing happens, both the MGMT and VM network
keep ticking away happily. I have each NIC plugged into a separate switch
chassis, to gain redundancy on the switches.

Hope some part of this helps you!

[ovirt-users] Virt-viewer not working over VPN

2018-02-09 Thread Vincent Royer
Hi, I asked this on the virt-viewer list, but it appears to be dead, so my
apologies if this isn't the right place for this question.

When I access my vm's locally using virt-viewer on windows clients,
everything works fine, spice or vnc.

When I access the same vm's remotely over a site-to-site VPN (setup between
the two firewalls), it fails with an error: unable to connect to libvirt
with uri: [none]. Similarly I cannot connect in a browser-based vnc
session (cannot connect to host).

I can resolve the DNS of the server from my remote client (domain override
in the firewall pointing to the DNS server locally) and everything else I
do seems completely unaware of the vpn link (SSH, RDP, etc). For example
connecting to https://ovirt-enginr.mydomain.com works as expected. The
only function not working remotely is virt-viewer.

Any clues would be appreciated!

Re: [ovirt-users] NetworkManager with oVirt version 4.2.0

2018-02-04 Thread Vincent Royer
I had these types of issues as well my first time around, and after a
failed engine install I haven't been able to get things cleaned up, so I
will have to start over. I created a bonded interface on the host before
the engine setup. but once I created my first VM and assigned bond0 to it,
the engine became inaccessible the moment the VM got an IP from the
router.

What is the preferred way to setup bonded interfaces? In Cockpit or nmcli
before hosted engine setup? Or proceed with only one interface then add
the other in engine?

Is it possible, for example, to setup bonded interfaces with a static
management IP on vlan 50 to access the engine, and let the other VMs grab
DHCP IPs on vlan 10?

It looks like an old howto, we will need to update or remove it.

For the interfaces to be owned by oVirt, you will need to add the host to
Engine.
So I would just configure everything up to the VLAN (slaves, bond, VLAN)
with NetworkManager prior to adding it to Engine. The bridge should be
created when you add the host.
(assuming the VLAN you mentioned is your management interface and its ip is
the one used by Engine)

No (for 4.1 and 4.2)

Do I need to manage the networking using (nmtui) NetworkManager?

You better use cockpit or nmcli to configure the node before you add it to
Engine.

Re: [ovirt-users] Windows 10 floppy not found during setup

2018-02-03 Thread Vincent Royer
Thanks I tried it and it did in fact work. Just threw me off because all
the instructions say to load the floppy.

My windows install got right up to the point where it was loading the NICs,
and then it all came crashing down. I expected the VMs and the engine to
be able to share the same NIC, but I suppose it doesn't work that way.

[ovirt-users] Windows 10 floppy not found during setup

2018-02-03 Thread Vincent Royer
I am trying to install Windows 10 on Ovirt 4.2

I pushed the virtio-win iso and vfd files to my ISO domain. I created the
VM and loaded the CD rom with the windows install ISO and in the "run once"
settings I chose the virtio-win selection as a floppy. However when
entering windows setup, there is no drive to install to, and no floppy
shows up in the usual place to install the drivers.

the installation did succeed when selecting "IDE" as the target disk
instead of the virtio or virtio-SCSI options.

Is there any way to install the drivers after the fact and then change the
disk mode from IDE to virtio?

Is the method on this page
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/virtual-machines/create-a-windows-7-virtual-machine/

still relevant? Looks like they suggest swapping the CD disk once the
windows setup has begun.

Thanks!
