[xwiki-users] Anyone using xwiki with sql server?
My learning environment for xwiki 8.4.3 involves sql server 2012 as the data store. Apparently sql server is not officially supported by xwiki. It would be interesting to hear if any xwiki deploys out there do use sql server as the data store? If it's really rare I'll move to postgresql. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Anyone-using-xwiki-with-sql-server-tp7603072.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Oh, and a note about *why* it's ok to have the two tutorials which create an application named FAQ would be useful, if it is the case. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/The-FAQ-Tutorial-Manual-is-somewhat-out-of-date-not-sure-how-to-proceed-tp7602425p7602444.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] The FAQ Tutorial Manual is somewhat out of date, not sure how to proceed
Thanks for that. Now, since I already created a mini FAQ using the "Apps within Minutes" FAQ tutorial, do I have the risk of namespace collision if I follow the more advanced tutorial that you just edited? Or are they somehow isolated? Many new users will do the "Apps within Minutes" FAQ tutorial and next the tutorial that works with XWikiClasses...it might be worth adding a note that it's ok to have the two identially named artifacts in the wiki; or change the name of one of the tutorials if they can't co-exist as named. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/The-FAQ-Tutorial-Manual-is-somewhat-out-of-date-not-sure-how-to-proceed-tp7602425p7602442.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[xwiki-users] The FAQ Tutorial Manual is somewhat out of date, not sure how to proceed
I am attempting to follow the guidance at http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/DevGuide/FAQTutorialManual The idea of this page is to walk one through the creation of a new data type. However the page is out of date. For example on the xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/XWikiClasses page, things are not the same as the tutorial image in the "Create a new data type" section. The tutorial says one could fill out the space and class fields with "FAQ" but the 8.4.3 xwiki does not offer a space field. The most recent comment made in Nov 2016 states This example no longer works correctly in 8.4. However, it will if... After you create the WebHome (FAQs) page. Delete the FAQClass object from WebHome For a new xwiki user this kind of stuff is confusing. I am hesitant to proceed because I don't know what the missing "space" field implies and am not sure if I'll get tripped up by the FAQClass issue. I already ran the "Apps within Minutes" FAQ tutorial, so I'm concerned that I'll have a namespace collision with this new FAQ application unless I know what the space issue implies. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/The-FAQ-Tutorial-Manual-is-somewhat-out-of-date-not-sure-how-to-proceed-tp7602425.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] Install Task Manager Application 2.4.1, velocity error
I had no idea that sql server is not officially supported, bummer. I worked from http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/InstallationWAR which lists sql server in the rdbms section and has a link to the sql server page. The sql server page does list older versions, but I sure didn't expect it to be unsupported. This is frustrating because I could have just as easily used postgresql instead, or oracle, if I'd realized sql server was second tier to them as far as xwiki goes. What does "Some pull requests for this would be nice..." mean? I might post to taskman jira as you suggest. I was only installing task manager to have a look at the inner workings of an application. So I don't need it to work per se. I thought it might be simpler than the "ideas" application (for example). I suppose it is difficult to migrate xwiki from sql server to postgres? Probably easier to reinstall from scratch (I don't have a lot of content that needs to be preserved). Thanks for your input. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Install-Task-Manager-Application-2-4-1-velocity-error-tp7602410p7602424.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] Copy-Paste from Word loses images
Thanks Marius. So, I infer that at least in some circustances XWiki will accept the images embedded in a word document. Great. This is xwiki 8.4.3; using the ckeditor which comes with the war install by default. I am not sure which of the options you outline might apply here. It is probably rhe first option you mention "there's no img HTML tag because Word doesn't copy the image along with the content"; how can I test that? I find that I cannot copy paste the doc with image to another instance of word; the images are lost, just like they are in xwiki paste. That surprised me. The images are "embedded" in the word document. I don't see a source attribute at all. Do you have any idea if Word can "offer" the embedded images for copy/paste? [xwiki-users] Copy-Paste from Word loses images
I have the openoffice server configured to import from word docs and it does quite well. However a direct copy/past from word still loses the images while keeping much of the formatting. This is just how it is, correct? To preserve Word formatting and embedded images, the import process must be used? Or is there a workaround? Re: [xwiki-users] Importing a file system based set of folders with text, doc, files
I have exported using both the build in export feature, and the Large Export By Space Application. The output renders as unreadable, the encoding I guess. I have tried using notepad++ to see if I can get it to look like regular xml without success. This workstation is windows 7, server windows 2012 rs. I think notepad++ renders it as ansi, because when I ask it to convert to ansi it does not change. But all of the other 'convert' options make it even more illegible (utf-8, utf-8-bom, etc). There must be a simple way to view the exported xar in windows? I wonder if my plan to write out a xar of my existing information matrix is going to have issues with this. I would have to export in whatever format xwiki can deal with, as far as the encoding goes. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Importing-a-file-system-based-set-of-folders-with-text-doc-files-tp7602197p7602310.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Re: [xwiki-users] Is there an easy way to copy paste multiple images onto a page?
That's interesting...I just tried it again and at first it seemed that the issue was solved. Several pasted images were added to the page, each with it's own distinct name. I was copy/pasting from saved files. I made some additional experiments and discovered how it was that I saw that image replacement behavior. In my original tests I was taking a screenshot, and pasting the image in directly from the buffer. In each case the image was named "image.png" and effectively the second copy/paste overwrote the first image. The screen capture software offers the image in each case with the name image.png. So it's not really an issue with xwiki. My legacy patterns which I hope to replace in part with xwiki involve pasting images into word documents as I'm documenting a process. Word does not retain the image as a file per se; it absorbs the file, and so there is no assigned file name, or chance of file name conflict. xwiki does save the image as a file and has no mechanism (that I know of) for detecting that the two images are different and then saving the two images as separate files. If there is an add in that might mitigate this issue that would be ideal, but I might guess there is not. I may be able to defeat the brain dead clipboard paste name of image.pgn, and that would solve things very well. Thank you for your input...since you reported, and I confirmed, that pasting multiple images can work, I had to look again at why it wasn't working in my test. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Is-there-an-easy-way-to-copy-paste-multiple-images-onto-a-page-tp7602229p7602259.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] What does "Version 8.4.3 is installed as dependency" mean?
Re connecting openoffice and xwiki, Google finds https://network.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/DocXE51En/OfficeImporter and a similar page for 4.x; I can't find anything in the 8.x docs; probably missed it (google seems to have missed it too). The closest is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP_N5U_GIJY which is for xwiki 7. Is the config for 7.x close enough to 8.x so that I can follow that guidance? In the video there is mention of an option to manage internally or externally #-# [Since 1.9M2] #-# Type of the openoffice server instance used by officeimporter component. #-# 0 - Internally managed server instance. (Default) #-# 1 - Externally managed (local) server instance. # openoffice.serverType=0 Does option 0 mean that xwiki will expose openoffice configuration, as far as it pertains to xwiki? And would option 1 mean that the admin (probably an expert) would configure the relevant aspects of openoffice from "outside" xwiki? Even more basic - as far as open office goes, I install oo, and configure it to run as a service? Thanks for making what must have seemed to be the most obvious reply of the recent period . Since it seemed to me to be not installed, I couldn't interpret "is installed" as "is installed" Now that you made it clear that it is bundled with 8.4.3, I see that I missed a critical item of information on the office importer application page: "The Office Importer requires a back-end Open Office server for its operations." I don't have exposure to open office for a long time now. I will check out getting open office server set up and hopefully that will help. Re: [xwiki-users] Need help configuring xwiki for sql server; possible documentation error
Hi and thanks for the reply. For someone like myself who is very inexperienced with configuring java and tomcat, it'd have been useful if there was a statement on the tomcat setup page here something like this: "Make sure you give enough memory to Java. The default memory settings for tomcat are too low to install or run xwiki without issues. Recommended settings are min 512 and max 1024" or something of that order. "Make sure you give enough memory to Java” was noteworthy, I wondered about it, but it didn't clue me in to the fact that out of the box tomcat defaults to way too low. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Need-help-configuring-xwiki-for-sql-server-possible-documentation-error-tp7602211p7602231.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
[xwiki-users] What does "Version 8.4.3 is installed as dependency" mean?
I wanted to import a word document to see how it does. I have xwiki 8.4.3. The Office Importer Application needs to be installed, as far as I can tell. Next to it's name it says 8.3, and in the header it has "Version 8.4.3 is installed as dependency". It does not have the blue Install button; instead it says "Downgrade". Dependencies listed are xwiki platform - office - importer 8.3 and then "version 8.4.3 is provided" xwiki commons - component - api and then "version 8.4.3 is provided" I have not found anything in the docs that explain what this means, although I expect the info is there somewhere. Does it mean that I have to downgrade my installation to 8.3 in order to get this extension to install? But another extension "File Manager Application" does have the blue install button; and it has many dependencies on apparently older extensions like velocity macro 5.4.4. I can't make sense of it. I've searched quite a bit and haven't found anything relevant. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/What-does-Version-8-4-3-is-installed-as-dependency-mean-tp7602230.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Finally, success. Almost for certain the issue was lack of memory for tomcat. With min 512 and max 1024 xwiki is running normally. I am using the jtds driver. Here is the jtds section on the sql server config page: jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://:1433/XWiki;tds=8.0;lastupdatecount=true xwiki xwiki net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver org.hibernate.dialect.SQLServerDialect com.xpn.xwiki.store.DBCPConnectionProvider 2 2 There may be a couple of issues with this template. Near the bottom was the parse error The element type "server-url" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "" Either the tag was put in there in error or the expectation was that the clever xwiki installer would see that as a placeholder and do something with it. I swapped in localhost, and it solved that issue. It might be worth adjusting the docs? Note I am running on the default port for sql server. After this I got errors. I compared the sql server config page with the examples (mysql, postgres etc) in the hibernate file and made two more changes. The first line loses the jtds so jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433/XWiki;tds=8.0;lastupdatecount=true and I added two mappings at the end (all other example dbs show these) I was still getting error number 11007. I can't mine the error detail to get to a next step. It's close - the xwiki initialization seems to get into the 90% range before bombing out. Re: [xwiki-users] Installing XWiki 8.4.3 using windows exe
Thanks Thomas. So Jetty and Tomcat are both Java EE Servers, that explains it. Does it mean I should run the uninstaller for the xwiki exe? Probably. And now I recall that a good while ago I did read that the standalone isn't particularly meant for production use. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Installing-XWiki-8-4-3-using-windows-exe-tp7602199p7602202.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
[xwiki-users] Installing XWiki 8.4.3 using windows exe
I'm not very good with java so I'm probably missing something very obvious. The install in on windows 2012 r2. tomcat is running on port 8080. When I browse to 8080 I see the tomcat success page. The XWiki 8.4.3 installer seemed to go ok. I created the database and user (sql server), edited the hibernate xml. When I run the "start xwiki" the dos windows does ok for a bit and then starts showing some failures like 2016-12-26 18:38:15.451:WARN:oejuc.AbstractLifeCycle:main: FAILED ServerConnecto r@205b73d8{HTTP/1.1}{0.0.0.0:8080}: java.net.BindException: Address already in u se: bind java.net.BindException: Address already in use: bind at sun.nio.ch.Net.bind0(Native Method) viewing xwiki just show this: HTTP Status 404 - /xwiki/bin/view/Main/ type Status report message /xwiki/bin/view/Main/ description The requested resource is not available. Apache Tomcat/8.0.30 Does this mean that tomcat is using 8080 for something already and xwiki can't take it over? I could change the port that xwiki will run on; but will wait for input. BTW, as far as I can tell the install docs on xwiki.org do not include any info on a windows exe type install. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Installing-XWiki-8-4-3-using-windows-exe-tp7602199.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[xwiki-users] Importing a file system based set of folders with text, doc, files
I know xwiki can import various kinds of data one at a time per http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/Imports. Here is my more complex scenario. We have been adding text files, or doc files, to a windows file system set of folders. The normal pattern has been something like this: *-dir root* --*dir acronis backup* ---*dir 20150101 install on server01* text file somename.txt ---*dir 20150520 update to version x.x* text file re.txt image screenshot01.png --*dir backblaze* ---*dir 20140105 install and configure* txt file re.txt etc So, there are topic areas at the highest level (acronis, backblaze) and normally under them folders named for the date (20150101) with a title (install on server01). Inside the folder is a mix of text files, word documents, and images. I would use the top level folder as a category or topic area inside xwiki. I would use the date as a data point on the wiki entry, to make sure I can sort by date of occurrance. The text or word files are often named re.txt. Sometimes they have a more distinctive name, but mostly the file name is not a viable name for a wiki entry. The second part of the folder name would be better for that. So, no one needs to parse all the details of our existing folder/file hive. I realize there is no way that any wiki system can simply import and translate that into something that would be presentable inside the wiki. I expect to write some code (non-php, I'd probably use vb) that traverses the hive that we have, and writes elements of what it finds into an xml file or something else that can otherwise be pulled into xwiki. the text and doc files would be converted into pages and the images...I'm not familiar enough with xwiki to know if it'd be best to leave those files in place on the disk and simply references them in the related wiki entry, or better to move them into the wiki system somehow. I could even write the wiki entries directly into the database. xwiki has an api, possibly that would be useful for this purpose? Probably an issue that has been encountered many times in the past. I'd appreciate any tips and or pointers to articles about this. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Importing-a-file-system-based-set-of-folders-with-text-doc-files-tp7602197.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] Which input syntax to choose?
OK, thanks that's the info I was looking for. I kind of guessed that the mulitple input syntaxes would be most useful when importing pages from another type of wiki. When I configure the test server I'll use xwiki 2.1 syntax and see how it goes. -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Which-input-syntax-to-choose-tp7602190p7602195.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
[xwiki-users] Which input syntax to choose?
I would like input on which input syntax might be best to use. I am not habituated to any syntax, only light exposure to mediawiki and wikis in general. I would value a syntax which is simple and terse. xwiki has gone out of it's way to support many input syntaxes. The safe choice for portability (of skillset and pages) would seem to be mediawiki. But I might guess that the xwiki syntax was developed in order to better utilize the special features of xwiki, and so in xwiki, xwiki syntax would have to be the best and the default syntax. If one chooses xwiki syntax, is there a way to convert/export to mediawiki syntax if needed? -- View this message in context: http://xwiki.475771.n2.nabble.com/Which-input-syntax-to-choose-tp7602190.html Sent from the XWiki- Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Re: [xwiki-users] Can one copy/paste images directly into the page editor?

Re: [xwiki-users] No luck with xwiki-enterprise-installer-windows-4.2 on windows 7
Adding java to the path did the trick. I guess it would be worth adding a message about this to the start routine, if java is not found. Every time that I started xwiki via the provided shortcut, I'd just see the cmd window open and close in a blink. There was no time to read anything like a fail message, if the console provided one. Yeah, oops re that bat file name. D:\XWiki Enterprise 4.2start_xwiki.bat 'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. [xwiki-users] No luck with xwiki-enterprise-installer-windows-4.2 on windows 7
I have installed xwiki for testing on a windows 7 box using xwiki-enterprise-installer-windows-4.2.exe. The installation is very simple, but I can't get to xwiki after starting the server. The default port is 8080 and just in case there was a conflict I changed it to 8084 (in the start bat file, it's now set JETTY_PORT=8084). Still no luck after restarting via the desktop icons. For example using firefox to http://localhost:8084/xwiki I get Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:8084. Not so amusingly, I just found a very similar thread here that I started in Nov 2012 the first time I wanted to try out xwiki. Can one copy/paste images directly into the page editor? I am testing with the xwiki.org sandbox. It seemed to work, ie the image appeared in the wysiwyg editor. [xwiki-users] Installation on windows 7 completes but xwiki is not on 8080
I have downloaded and installed standalone xwiki ent 4.2, it seemed to go well. I installed to d:\XWiki Enterprise 4.2, didn't use the default program files path the installer suggested (and I read later at http://www.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Products/InstallationGuide that the prog files dir is not good, the installer should be changed???) I double click the start xwiki icon on my desktop. Nothing seems to happen. I nav to http://localhost:8080/xwiki/ and see that firefox can't establish a connection. I rarely mess with java, and so I am not sure if I have a A Servlet Container supporting Servlet 2.4 which would be tomcat or something of that order. Some other software I have installed uses tomcat, but I'm not sure if it's running by default. Would the installer have warned me if tomcat etc was not installed? xwiki looks pretty neat, I am looking forward to testing it out. Thanks Marius. The log showed that it did successfully start. But the path the log showed was http://myserver:8080, and that path does resolve as xwiki.
