[VFB] OUR Troops, Fly Fishing Related
This is Theresa and mines second year of working with Christmas For OUR Troops. http://www.westtexastroopsalute.com/christmasfot.htm Last year we sent over 600 box's to OUR Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. My personal goal this year is over 1000. In fact, it is such a goal for me that if we brake the 1000 names and APO's mark, Theresa gets to shave my beard off, (mind you, I have had this beard since I was medically released from service in 1998). I want to make that goal, or even surpass it. Stay with me, there is a reason for this post to the group. #1, if you know of anyone who is, or knows someone over there, please get me their name and apo address. If you have contact with someone over there, have them help by providing the names and apo address of those they serve with. Especially make sure they let you know who gets little or no mail. Please send names and APO's to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will get them on the data base within the hour. Just help me out by putting CFOT APO in the subject line. Help us close in on the 1000 mark. #2, when I was at sea it was always a special moment when I got mail. It was even better when there was some simple surprise in it that reminded me that someone back home was thinking of ME. I was wondering if it would be to much trouble to ask the group for something. Would it be possible for each of you to pick up an inexpensive pack of Thank You Cards, jot something down in each of them, and maybe include a fly with a toe tag with the name of the fly, and your e-mail address? This thought came to me a bit ago when I was cleaning up at the tying bench and started coming across some box's of flies from swaps, some years ago. It reminded me that a simple thing like a well tied fly can spark excitement and memories of great times. I am going through and selecting a bunch of flies from my boxes, some of the best I have ever tied. Theresa is going to get the cards and her and Amanda are going to do the same. We have absolutely no idea who is going to get a card, but have the faith that those that do, will receive something special to them, and make their day better. I know that the possibility of coming up with a 1000 cards and flies is more than likely unobtainable. But, as many as we can send is a chance to brighten someone's day. If you think you might like to participate, with any amount, small or large, of cards, or cards and flies, drop me a note off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested. I will need all cards in hand by November 29th because we make the final haul to Midland on December the 1st to sort, pack and ship the boxes. [VFB] Appology, and Comment
I apologize for causing such an UPROAR asking for prayer for a pen pal. I didn't mean to start such a ruckus on the group. It may interest you to know though, that Sgt Martin is stationed in Port Orchard Washington. He is an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. We have recently been talking about fly fishing and fly tying. He has tried fly fishing before but with not much luck as he put it. And he has never tied flies before. He thought it may be a nice change for him to learn it as a new hobby to help him stay connected to his home and family. I have been working on putting a vice and some other things together for him, passing on some of the wonderful things that folks on this list sent me and Amanda when we got back into fly tying. I must say, some of the posts hurt me very deeply. Discounting any soldier who is far from home, for whatever reason, is distasteful to me. I count it as the same thing as a mother abandoning her new born child because it was not a girl. Go figure The reason I made the post was to let others know that a new member of the Fraternal Order of Fly Fishers was injured. Nothing more. So if you don't mind, I will keep my thoughts, and prayers to myself from now on. I am the way I am because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time while serving my country. I didn't ask for it. Wasn't looking for it. And Damn Sure didn't want it when it happened. But such is life. I will ignore the whole group if it makes someone put down brave young souls, (some of whom are interested in learning to tie flies and fly fish), and reduce these kids to ridicule and disfavored. Just remember, you have the ability to chose to bitch, THEY DON'T. Nuff said, and my last comment on the subject. Enjoy the basking in your own life, paid for with the Blood of to many solders. I am working on a fly tying station for a nice young man who saves all of his allowance for fly tying supplies. I am going to include a vice, bobbin, bodkin and other tools with the station. I am also going to send some tying materials, hooks etc. Was wondering if anyone else would like to contribute something for this young man. His mom calls him a Tech Winnie but lives to tie flies. If you would like to contribute anything just send it to me with a note, For the Kid, and it will go in his box. I plan on having the station completed and reedy to ship around December the 12th. Mine was a Mudler Minnow, with a west Texas twist, from the pattern in McClain's Standard Fishing Encyclopedia. It caught my very first trout, a Brown, on the north fork of the south Platt river in Colorado about 1968. Have several of the decimated kin in my very first fly box, but the first was lost to a rock fish along that same river a few days later. Very fond memories. Thanks for helping me remember. My first fly (I'll have to post a picture of it) was a Mickey Finn Streamer w/ Peacock tied over the top. I still have it displayed in a case in our front room. People once and awhile will ask about it. It was the first fly that a beginner fly tying kit instructed me to tie. Morning Iain, She has been working on the paperwork, essays and especially her grades for it. She got a 97 on an English paper a few weeks back and I thought we were going to have to call the paramedics. We went down last weekend for the meeting and she had a 40 minute interview with professors who were part of the decision. There were 47 students that made the cut, and only 5 got the full ride honors scholarship. Yep, she has worked hard for it, even though she already has a full ride from the VA, she wanted to do it on her own. She has been working with her VA counselor and wants to save that for her masters and doctorate in Micro Biology specializing in nerve repair and regeneration for paralyzed vets. This is a bit OT, but I needed to thank everyone who has helped with names and APO's for our 2009 Christmas for OUR Troops. We have surpassed our goal this year of 1500 troops served, and continue to add names and APO's. Sorry for being lat on this, Christmas for OUR Troops has had me up to ears in running. But, OUR Troops are the winners. The most memorable of the Rivers I have fished is the North Fork of the South Platt river near Hartselle Colorado. It was the very first Trout stream I got to fish as a kid. After that we add the Pecos River, San Juan, Rio Ruidoso, Tularosa Creek, the Rio Bonito, all in New Mexico. Now I have tried another technique. You start with making a rope... and I mean a tight rope... and I mean a very tight rope... and I mean a TOO tight rope. Then you cut that rope from the bobbin and tie it in at the breaking point. Then you make another one, lmost too tight. Now you have two ropes, one on the thread to your bobbin and one hanging freely... and you can start your parallel weave!! LOL It's tricky but possible. And by having one of the strands(ropes) connected to your bobbin, this is a parallel weave that you can practice without having to cut the thread first... which became another one of those chills I've been having. You can do this with other materials too... just tried with antron and it worked like a charm. This works best if you use monofilament for the core (or wire), and things get tight and friction fights you. You may have a 3 long rope that you can compress 30-50%, and it will look way buggier, with better segments, and more dense. It will also feel more life-like to a fish. The VC stays flexible and makes everything go clear, exposing what's under the JR. The fly turns out much softer and lighter than head cements, epoxy, or UV body cover. After the eyes are tied down, the hook is wrapped with pearl flash tinsel, then a short piece of JR is tied to the bottom (abdomen only). Then make an ultra-fine rope of ice-dub, 2 colors, gap-wrapped, finished off at a thicker thorax in front of the short belly JR. Then tie a long piece of JR to the top( head-2-tail). I use mono thread so the thread is no longer a factor in color- it goes clear with the VC and JR. Keep the wraps in the same location to pull down the segments in the JR. Once everything is tied, pick out the front legs (just a few) and then soak the fly in thinned VC to get full penetration to the hook. This will make the fly go clear and hi-lite the underwraps of ice-dub thoughout the clear areas. It also makes the fly sink fast and is very durable. The dry/emerger version is similar, but tied longer on an emerger hook and sporting a parachute wing (wingers) and hackle. The body is suspended below the surface so the clear aspect of the abdomen is effective. The thorax is not tied transparent, but fuzzy ice-dub. I met 2 guides in Green River on the trip last week, and I gave them about two dozen roped flies of all sorts, and extended body worms and transparent flies. They liked them all and were excited about fishing them- especially the clear flies. They loved the rope-dub segments and share-bought a DVD. Well folks, it happened again last week. We had a big boomer and the computer went down. I lost all my VFB stuff, all my recipes and patterns as well as photos. Don O, do you still have the photos and recipes for the clear stretchy stuff you made the soft bodies with? Also, what was the adhesive you used and what did you thin it with? Sad at a loss of such a wealth of info I had on everything from tying flies to rod building and making furled leaders. Much of which will never be able to be replaced. Those of you who read my book will remember Steve as the stay-at-home-Dad. Valerie was walking down the parking lot to the grocery, when a lady hit her from behind. Val had been bent down to pick up her cellphone that she dropped, when the lady's son dropped his sippy cup and she reached back to retrieve it. Wham! Valerie literally got 'rear-ended' Val's friend Karen tried to push Val away and ended up breaking her middle finger. Thank God it wasn't lunch hour for the lot would have been full of people going into the pizza parlor, right next to the grocery. The upshot is that valerie's right leg is a mess from ankle to knee. all kinds of pins and rods, one rod even on the exterior of her leg. She'll recover, but it'll be at least three months before she'll be able to get around again. The VFB came to Jody's aid when she was fighting cncer, i.e. Jody's Rainbow Angels and Steve from a severe brain injury. Both have fully recovered and I know without a doubt that the VFB's prayers played a huge part in both their recovery. Denny, long time no hear, or see. Today has been a good day for VFB. Old and new friends showing up and lots of memories sparked. I for one need to get back to the bench soon. Right now there is no air conditioning in the family room so it is totally unbearable most of the time. Do combine my fly fishing with my Appleseed Rifle instruction when I can. Nothing like a couple of 8 rainbows in the skillet after a great day of shooting and history. Just wish it could be more often. Many of the board members do not know me. I have been around forever (yep, one of the older guys). I do own Conranch Hackle and have tied and fly fished for over 66 years. Still learnin. I like to tie in a red tag on a lot of my dry flies. I'm not sure if the fish like it but I do. I manage to catch more than my share. The past two seasons I have been fishing more nymphs soft hackle flies. I do not wade well any more so fish my high Mtn Kettle lakes from a toon, for all of the different specie of trout. Added a new pair of Apollo Bio Pro fins and love them. Might be a bit pricey but they work for me. It is good to be back. 'Juice bugs' are just a style of fly that I've tied for 30 years, starting with Swannundaze. With new materials came new applications- Vinyl, Sof-tex, Jelly-rope, etc., Now UV as the latest improvement. The goal is to make a bug that looks 'juicy', that is, it looks like you can just 'squish it' and the juice will get all over your fingers. If you have some old Swannundaze, you could use that, or clear D-rib, or clear Larva-lace, or... I've even used strips of heavy mono to make a clear shell, and surgical tubing for salt shrimp. The one goal of any effort would be to create transparency. I don't like epoxy because of the smell and weight and yellowing and the time to dry (drying wheels) and the mess and fuss with mixing, the waste, and... On the simple side, just a scud rope-dubbed with reflective or synthetic dubbing, segmented, with a good coat of UV on the top side will make a juice-bug. Let it cure and pick out some legs and you'll have a scud like a lot of them look in my box, because that's just what I did. A 30-second fly to tie and doing a group with the UV doesn't take long. A second coat of UV and the results are amazing. A bare hook wrapped with pearl strip and then jelly-roped on the top, and then soaked with vinyl and then covered on the top with UV looks really cool- pearlescent-transparent. The thinned vinyl is to penetrate all your materials and make a solid fly, allowing the materials below to come to the surface as special effect colors. Then the UV coat gives transparent depth and allows all the undercolors to do even more amazing things. But after a few of these simple ones you may get adventuresome. Using the juice-bug tutorial as a basis lends for some experimentation. Nice thing is that everything comes out cool and fishable and gives you more ideas. So everyone's entries may be a hodge-podge of experiments gone well. I have a 100 or so in my boxes and have given away that many. I went back to old boxes and took out discard flies and treated them with the UV, glitter, and markers, and got some amazing new fishing flies. You'll find that markers and glitters are easy to use and give great results. You may hit on the simplest combo that the fish just can't resist. For panfish, I would do a pink ice-dub segmented scud with opal glitter in the UV- just a tad- would be killer. Chuck's pink panfish producer was rope-dubbed pink ice-dub. Just remember, it's a fun swap intended to let tiers play with techniques, especially Jelly-rope and UV goop. Lots of leaves and small branches everywhere, a coouple of garden trellis fell over, one or two dead trees bit the dust but so far no major damage, just a lot of cleaning up to do. As some may have noted over the last while I have been a bit distant on my daily flooding of you with my e-mails and political views. There is a reason. As some of you may know, most don't, since about last June our daughter Amanda has had some medical problems with her female parts. During Christmas brake she alluded to the fact she may have cancer. That caused her mom and me to push for answers to many questions, and meet a stone wall of non answers. The more questions we ask, the less contact and answers we got. Last night we were hit with a bomb shell. Having not heard from Amanda in a couple of days, after many attempts, Theresa called a couple of her room mates at school, got no answers but left messages. One called her back fairly late. It appears that her friends and room mates thought Theresa and I were some kind of Monsters because we were not there for Amanda. It appears that Amanda found out last July that she had Ovarian Cancer, and it has now moved to her liver, and with all appearances, her brain. She lever told us about the first part, let alone the progression, and we don't know why. Needless to say, Theresa and I are at a loss of understanding, and have more questions than answers now as to why she never told us anything. Amanda does not know that we now know what is going on. Her roommate invited Theresa down to stay in her room and talk to Amanda with support from her friends. Spring break starts Friday and we are going to start today to try to get the funds together so she can go. If you would, please pray that we can get answers andwill know what to do and what to say. To say that we are at a loss of understanding would be an understatement. I thought I should let you know because many of you know and love our daughter and should know what is going on. [VFB] Update on Amanda
Sorry folks I have not updated everyone on Amanda, Things have been Interesting around here to say the least. She refuses to, and demands that everyone that talks to her not us the C, (Cancer), word at all in addressing her. She refuses to talk to us at all about it. Her comment is, I'm Fine, don't bully me. She has said that she will refuse the Chemical, Cut and Burn approach to it. Dad has started a never ending search for information, and alternatives. Thanks to those that gave me input and links to information. The hard part will be presenting any information to Amanda, and getting here to at least look at it and consider it. For me, many late nights and early mornings spent researching and downloading information, reading it, and printing a bunch of it out to put into note books so I am not tied to the computer all the time and I can go out to the medicine wheel garden we are making for quiet and solitude. Best I can do now. Theresa was heading down there to see her yesterday, but got shut down and turned back because Amanda said she did not have time to talk to her mom, or me right now. She says she is busy studying for the MCAT test and doesn't have time for US right now. Theresa was heeding down there today and again, curt, don't bother me texts turned her around again. She has Promised to come down Thursday and go back Sunday, so we put some money in her account for her travel. One thing that really has us concerned is that She doesn't like to drive or make road trips anymore, For anyone that knows her, she used to love to travel, there was no distance to far for her and her friends to go. This is beyond a 180, it is totally out of character for her and has her mom and me not only concerned, but incredibly worried. We do know that she had to get All New Clothes, she went from a size 5/6 to a 1/0 between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Needless to say, that was a shock to us at Christmas, so she had to tell us a bit, There is a possibility was all she would say. I am going to turn it over to Theresa and let her fill you in on what she knows. She tells me, but for some reason I am having a hard time comprehending what has happened, and the only way I adjust to it is to find something to try and keep my hands and mind busy. Theresa cries a lot, I tend to hold it in until I cant anymore and have to go to the north side of the property so I can ell a bit and cry it out. A dad should never have the opportunity to outlive his daughter. I haven't given up, but it is hard for me when I don't have answers to needed questions. Here is Theresa, I need to take a brake for a bit. BTW, I can not tell you all how much your prayers and well wishes are felt and appreciated. jimi has covered much of it.she and I were texting pretty heavy yesterday-I got a little irritated at her and kind of cornered her somewhat. She says mom it's not as bad as everyone thinks.the docs aren't concerned about the spots on the liver and the brain.I am going to have surgery and I will let you know when I am going to the doc next.Of course I was caught off guard with this and I didn't ask her what the surgery was going to be on. so we continued texting and all and I I said Amanda can you put me on your hippa so I will no what's going onshe in no uncertain terms said she doesn't want me on itok..What am I to think? [VFB] Update on Amanda
Well according to Amanda about her surgery Friday, It went well, Eh, I'm really sleepy and a little nauseous. Sore as all Get out but good. They got everything out and it looks clear I think. I have another appointment to go over the lab results in a couple of weeks. I had one incision in my belly button, another lower and they went in where I had the appendix surgery long ago.. Those are quotes from text messages from her over the last 3 days. Her mom and I are finally breathing normal, (have been holding our breath off and on since thanksgiving), because she said that apparently she is cancer free now. However, we still have to wait for the labs and then we have a couple more questions for her. I have 2 days at the VA this week for my surgical procedures so Theresa and I will hold back anything we can after that so we can try to keep a reserve ready in case we have to make a flying trip down to see her. Theresa and myself, on behalf of Amanda and ourselves want to thank everyone for the prayers for her. God has worked through experienced hands and the initial prognosis at this time is good. We will endeavor to keep everyone posted on her progress, and again, thank you everyone for your prayers and other help through this time. Every DAY until we get answers. Demand that the answer, it is proven that she waved her 5 amendment claim by making a statement. Demand from Issa that if she refuses that the Sergeant of Arms place her under arrest for contempt, call an immediate contempt vote in the house and lock her lying socialist ass up till she does talk. The only way congress will act is if WE THE People force them to do their jobs. No Deals, NO QUARTER.
