FireAnt downloads and displays my Flash videos from my (Feedburner) RSS

Speaking of Sorenson Squeeze there's also Discreet Cleaner and Cleaner
XL. Actually I guess it's Autodesk Cleaner now since the
acquistion but whatever. I'm not sure what Cleaner costs -
Cleaner XL is a bit more expensive than $99. But just pointing it
out as another industry standard compression and media conversion tool.

And for MPEG there's TMPGEnc which has gotten quite good reviews over
on DV-L although it's known for being a bit fussy/verbose as far as the
options and settings it offers. But then again if you're anal
about compression then that's a good thing, right?

Re: [videoblogging] java viewer?!

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Sullivan

One thing I have noticed when working on windows machines that needs quicktime... and using firefox. After QT is installed, firefox tends to have problems playing some QT media and wants to download updates but usually fails. This has happened to be on about 4 or 5 diff puters over past several months. Annoying as hell. Even QT7 install failed to help.
But I totally depend on Quicktime compatible media, both as a creator and as web developer.vlogdir.com can handle most media formats (within the media aggregator) but some features like the videoblog playlists require quicktime (uses quicktime SMIL)
On the Java side, i used to work with java alot years back (JMF), then stayed away from it for a while. I am now once again interested in using Java and have done so by integrating an XML based Download Manager in vlogdir. It takes an rss feed, grabs the media enclosures and adds them to a download queue that lets the user choose where to download to... and displays status w/ progress bars. Totally experimental, but I think its pretty cool. Borrows from what you get in desktop apps like fireant and itunes, minus the automation/scheduling options.
Flash is something I have always used sparingly within a site design... never a true believer in a fully flash based interface though. I have also shit on the idea of using flash video in the past.. primarily because of it's lack of ease for remixing video. But, I cannot deny it's relevance for Internet Video and the quality has been improving nicely. I also think it is very useful as a web based video preview/playback option and sites like vSocial have done an excellent job with tools their like video rolls.
So, I will be utilizing more Flash than I ever thought I would months prior. sullOn 11/9/05, Michael Shipp

[videoblogging] Opinion of members is appreciated.

2005-11-09 Thread rigngaffer1
I am looking into this company. It is viral marketing. Cell phone radio/video.

http://www.CashBackAlliance.com/index.aspx?PID=6874

Would appreciate the opinion of others. Specifically does anyone have knowledge
about
this or similar startups? Comparisons?

In addition to several concepts I have tons of content, mostly behind the scene
footage of
movie and music video productions. My main interest is positioning for future.
Create new
content (from concepts), ads and in one case a new audience. The concepts
target several
niche markets that I believe would benefit. All are upper income or have ad
budgets
already in place

Have many industry contacts, alliances, sources for original content.

Would others wait as majors adapt, or trail blaze with Word-of-Mouth?
In just the past two days ... Yahoo and TiVo. Bill Gates. Motorola, Cox
Communications,
have all made announcements concerning future of video and or cell phones and
content
distribution.

This service seems affordable compared to trying to partner with a hosting
company, web
designer / administrator, software / code writing or leasing , ISP, and all the
legal /
accounting obstacles I encountered trying to do it on my own. I hate being
late. Worse is
being on time but unable to afford the ride.

Thank you in advance.

[videoblogging] Re: Playing vlog posts as songs

2005-11-09 Thread Susan
Don't panic!! :) There's hundreds of messages here, and I don't
always keep up.

diggnation, and also I have discovered Josh Leo's and a host of other
video blogs (which, aren't necessarily only m4v's--Josh's are .mov's)
will play as songs. What I mean, is on the new video ipod, on the
main screen, you have a songs heading and a videos heading.
Obviously you can play videos under videos. But most videos also
show up under the songs heading, and you can just listen to the
audio from the song and not play the video.

This is what I'm trying to make work on my own vlog.

I've been trying to do research... it doesn't seem to be m4v specific.
Some mov's will play. A couple of Josh's would play as songs. One
of RichardShow's would, one wouldn't. It's really driving me up the
freaking wall.

Susan

Re: [videoblogging] java viewer?!

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Sullivan

for me, it was strictly a firefox related issue... eventually, i get it working but each time, i am not even sure which step that i took resolved it :-/ this occurred even with embedded player plugin so it is not fast start related.
i think it is either codec related or mime type related and somehow firefox thinks it needs to update quicktime (maybe it truly does?) but then fails and directs you to the quicktime download page... which is useless since QT is already installed. within QT player, when choosing to check for updates, it sais QT is updated. so i really dont know and hate to spend another minute troubleshooting it.
i brought it up because it happened to me again this week on a new puter at work. sullOn 11/9/05, Christopher Weagel

Are you aware of the problem IE has in not immediately playing QT files if they are not embedded in an html file, even with the fast start.I think Josh wrote about this. It starts downloading the file but looks like the browser is doing nothing.
Or so I'm told.I'm also told that iTunes will install QT on windows when it installs. The videos don't even play through that?Videoblogging is just one endless headache.

[videoblogging] Re: YouTube - WTF?

2005-11-09 Thread Bill Streeter
I'm aware of Soernson squeeze, I have the lite version, and I've
used it on other projects. But the over arching factor in me using
YouTube rather than encoding my own flash movies is the fact that
it's free (I will probably get the upgrade to sorenson squeeze
eventually--but still it's $99) it's encoding and uploading in one
step and it's free hosting and bandwidth... at least for the time
being, it all works for me at the moment. I'm not saying I LOVE
YouTube, I just find it to be a good stop-gap solution for the time
being.

I have found that if I set my feedburner feed to only pick up video
enclosures that it ignores the flash files for feed distrobution. So
like I said before I can serve the Quicktime to my subscribers and
flash for browsers and the non-QuickTime users. Seems to be a good
solution.

Now what I would really like to do in the future is write or find an
apple script that will encode 2 versions of every project (Quicktime
and flash video) and upload them for me. Once I can figure that out
then I'll give up on YouTube.

Re: [videoblogging] java viewer?!

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Shipp

I can't recall having that kind of problem with Quicktime. Most of my
recent projects that involved Quicktime/SMIL/Firefox on Windows have
done fine. Sometimes better than the results on the Mac.

Like you, I work with Java a lot and have done a bunch of JMF work.
I've also done some Quicktime For Java work as well. I'd be
interested in seeing Quicktime's installation share (web, stand alone)
increase in order to use QTJ a lot more (very robust API, now that
Apple has bothered to actually fix it).

Flash is what it is. Currently ubiquitous as far as browsers so it's
not going anywhere. However, I'd love to see what AJAX does on the web
front. I can imagine doing some cool stuff without the need for Flash.
And if I need media within AJAX, it would seem to be easier to use a
standard plug-in (Real, QT, WM) with _javascript_ integration than
Flash. I've talked with other developers about this before but haven't
seen much yet (and I haven't had the time either).

But I totally depend on Quicktime
compatible media, both as a creator and as web developer.
  vlogdir.com can handle most media
formats (within the media aggregator) but some features like the
videoblog playlists require quicktime (uses quicktime SMIL)

On the Java side, i used to
work with java alot years back (JMF), then stayed away from it for a
while. I am now once again interested in using Java and have done so
by integrating an XML based Download Manager in vlogdir. It takes an
rss feed, grabs the media enclosures and adds them to a download queue
that lets the user choose where to download to... and displays status
w/ progress bars. Totally experimental, but I think its pretty cool.
Borrows from what you get in desktop apps like fireant and itunes,
minus the automation/scheduling options.

  Flash is something I have
always used sparingly within a site design... never a true believer in
a fully flash based interface though. I have also shit on the idea of
using flash video in the past.. primarily because of it's lack of ease
for remixing video. But, I cannot deny it's relevance for Internet
Video and the quality has been improving nicely. I also think it is
very useful as a web based video preview/playback option and sites like
vSocial have done an excellent job with tools their like video rolls.
So, I will be utilizing more Flash than I ever thought I would months
prior.

Exactly. This is not about computer screens vs. sheets of newsprint.
It's about the social structure of journalism vs. direct, first-hand

[videoblogging] Re: Does iTunes indicate somehow which videos will play in the iPod?

2005-11-09 Thread Steve Watkins
A good question, and an area Apple need to improve. Theres no easy way
to tell.

I havent automatically transferred any podcasts to video ipod, I drag
the video files (either from itunes library of file straight from
elsewhere on hard disk) onto the name of the ipod in itunes.

If it says 'copying' when I do this, then the file is compatible, if
its not compatible then nothing happens, no error message, the file
just doesnt get copied.

I assume that when setting itunes to automatically sync podcasts, the
same will apply, and it will simply ignore any files that arent
compatible. The behaviour is identical whether the files are mov, mp4
or m4v.

As for settings, the only options really are the podcast ones,
specifying whether all podcasts get synced, or just specific ones you
tick, or none (manual).

This behaviour isnt particularily intuitive, and definately needs to
improve. Ideally we need either itunes to use a different icon next to
ipod-compatible podcasts, or maybe apple will make itunes
automatically convert files to an ipod format in the future.

diggnation, and also I have discovered Josh Leo's and a host of other

will play as songs.

One

I actually got my question answered on The DV Show podcast!

Listen to the most recent podcast episode--my question was the
first
thing they talked about. Pretty interesting all the stuff he
found
out. And it looks like for my post to work, I am going to have to
break down and buy QuickTime Pro, though I wish I didn't have to
 just
for this one little feature.

Unless someone else knows of a free program that makes .m4v
files?
Seems they all convert out of it, but not in to it.

[videoblogging] Re: The Monolith Project (a must read for those interested in digital copyright issues)

2005-11-09 Thread anonperson1969
That's one of the coolest ideas I've come across in a long time. But
the argument breaks down a bit when talking about derivative
works. While the resulting Mono file may have nothing in common
with the original copyrighted file, it's creation is predicated BY
the copyrighted file... so the Mono file created by mixing Britney
with the Basis file, would not exist if it weren't for the
copyrighted Britney file. Plus, the fact that you could still
extract Britney from the Mono file is very clearly infringment.

But what if you could extract a totally separate file? Such as, you
use the Britney-based Mono file, and were able to extract only
the 1s and 0s that corresponded to a George Clinton song.

Either way, the idea is really just an encryption method. But the
philosphy is interesting.

[videoblogging] webcam delays?

2005-11-09 Thread Brett Gaylor
I'm trying to use a webcam to record videoblogs - I have a Creative
Webcam Live installed on a Pentium II PC using WinXP. I notice that
there is a lag between the sound and video - the video is a couple of
frames behind the sound. Is this normal? What can be done to reduce
this? Is it better/worse with certain webcams?

Thanks!

I noticed this too. I went out and got what I thought was a sweet
webcam ... and I couldnt for the life of me get the audio and video to
sync up. It was great for applications where such things wouldnt be
noticed (like IM video chat or something) ... but sucked for vlogs.

I have had this issue with 2 web cams although they were both from Creative.

It may be better with some software packages than others. what
software are you using to capture?

Thanks!

Is anyone automatically transfering videos to their ipods? How do you
use it?

Peter

Subscribe to an iTunes podcast feed ;)

[videoblogging] Re: Does iTunes indicate somehow which videos will play in the iPod?

2005-11-09 Thread Steve Watkins
It depends if they are in itunes as podcasts or just part of the main
library or playlists.

In itunes there are options to automatically transfer all or selected
podcasts to the ipod. If you have a video ipod then an additional
settings tab appears for that device, which enables you to
automatically transfer itunes library videos/video playlists.

I just tried this stuff for myself, for the first time with video.
Itunes does actually tell you if it encountered incompatible videos
that couldnt be transferred, and gives the uer a link to this webpage
to learn more:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301461-en

Unfortnately it dosnt list every video that failed to transfer, so its
still not perfect, but better than nothing.

money, they will be dwarfed by the thousands who aren't pursuing
riches. For them, the original allure of podcasting remains: creating
their own show, even if only for a few close friends.

None of those work. They are all the wrong video format and the wrong
audio format.

mpeg4 video (or h264) and AAC audio is the starting point for
compatibility, and then theres more devil in the detail but I'll leave

[videoblogging] Compression techniques - file size ratios

2005-11-09 Thread Will
After numerous attempts of trying different compression settings an codecs - I
ended up
with a with a 19.8 mb file that was 5 minutes long. This works out to about
4mb/minute. I
was wondering if this is a common size for a file this long? Is there any stats
out there on
what kind of compression ratios vodcasters are using?

My final version was compressed using 3ivx - dual pass. I had orginally had
the size down to
11 mb using h.264 with the same quality but I discovered that only QT 7 could
play this -
which ruled out a lot users.

BTW - any windows users that couldn't see the inaugural version of tiny tube
because of the
QT7 can now view it.

I've seen the term quicktime SMIL in a few posts. Unless Apple changed
something for qt7, qt uses just the structural part of SMIL not the
appearance part. SMIL is processed first. I've read warnings that a lot
of SMIL could delay the start of a movie until SMIL processing is
finished. I hope this helps some of the troubleshooting out there.

[videoblogging] Draft Results of the Monash University Podcasters and Videobloggers Survey Relea

2005-11-09 Thread Peter Chen
Draft Results of the Monash University Podcasters and Videobloggers
Survey Released for Comment

Go to: http://peterchen.members.grokthis.net/research

Abstract
Based on a survey of 366 podcasters and videobloggers, this paper
examines these emerging cultural practices from aspect of production,
with specific interest in producer motivations, production methods,
the relationship between formats, and audience numbers. The
exploratory research findings – largely limited to English language
producers – illustrates a number of interesting features about this
area of activity. These include:
• Podcasts and videoblogs exhibit many similarities in terms of their
content and production, and therefore can be conceptualized in similar
ways, with some notable exceptions,
• The research identified a relatively limited demographic range of
producers (dominated by educated men from North America in their
mid-thirties). Overall, there is a significant disparity in
participation by women in the production of both podcasts and videoblogs,
• Surprisingly, a significant number of podcasts and videoblogs are
undertaken for explicitly commercial or quasi-commercial purposes, but
with an emphasis on advertising over other revenue models,
• Most shows are produced with some reference to third party input and
the inclusion of third party content,
• The use of guests or experts is relatively common in many shows (as
opposed to associated website commentary and discussion) demonstrates
a clear gatekeeper role by producers more akin to television and
radio production than the associated phenomena of blogging, and
• There appears to be opportunities for the providers of supporting
technologies (production software, hosting and directory services, and
media clients) to further support show producers through increasing
the ease of production, better audience metrics, and peering options.
In addition, a number of interesting relationships between audience
size and show characteristics are examined. Some key findings include:
• Episode frequency exerts a strong influence on audience size, with
the release of daily episodes demonstrating the highest average
audience size. Presently, most shows are produced on a weekly basis,
• There are few specific production-side determinants on popularity
(including production time per episode), with the exception of
collaborative shows, where there is a significant positive correlation
between the number of staff or collaborators and show popularity, and
• There appears to be an emerging negative relationship within the
podcasting production community between the prevalence of shows in
some genres and lower average audience sizes. While this relationship
is not significant, it may indicate that the market in some genres is
saturating and further efforts need to be undertaken to expand the
overall size of the market.
In the final discussion, some additional comments are provided on
issues of copyright and other legal concerns, policy considerations to
address gender inequality, and questions associated with definitional
inspecificity.

For now it is just for files less than 20MB.

quicktime SMIL as in using quicktime extensions within the SMIL XML format.SMIL with video does work best if it's lite, as you say. It helps to add preload for next video so there is no delay.

[videoblogging] New Mefeedia out today

2005-11-09 Thread petertheman
Hi all,
just now, we launched the new Mefeedia.

If you had Instant Archive problems of posts not showing up, check it
now. Let me know if you still have the same problem. You may also want
to have a look at your feeds details page, lotsa new stats there.

If you have a video iPod, try entering your new video queue RSS feed
to iTunes or ANT to synch it up with your Mefeedia queue.

And for other stuff, have a browse around. Lotsa new funky stuff there.

In a few weeks the next version of Mefeedia will come out, I still
don't think it's good enough. Meanwhile, enjoy this one, let me know
if you find any problems!

Props to Devlon for lotsa help with lotsa parts.

Oh, and we have reviews of blogs. Write a review of your favourite
vlogs, I'm sure the vloggers will apreciate it, and it'll help others
find good vlogs. I decided against doing a star rating system (thanks
Ryanne!) because videoblogging is not about popularity... what 1
person thinks is great is boring to the next. But reviews are useful I
think though. They're moderated..

And feel free to blog about the new site :)

Cheers,
Peter

The sort of stuff you WON'T SEE ON MTV! yeah. that's the idea.

Anyway, would love feedback from this group as you guys helped us pull
the bits and pieces together.

Cheerz.

Markus,
there were 2 probs with the Instant Archive. 1 is that some posts just
didn't show up. That should be fixed. The other is that some posts
have the grey thumbnail coming image. That will slowly catch up over
the next weeks and months (it's been catching up since we moved to the
new server a few weeks ago).

Re: [videoblogging] Free video converter to Flash format to test

2005-11-09 Thread Chris Baudry

Hi Ted:

FLV is not a format usedby most of video players, so when you click on the file at the end of the conversion process, it may not be automatically played.

So either you candownload a specific codec that will allow you video player to play the file, or... something easieris touseone of the many freeFLV video players like RIVA FLV PLAYER 1.2 that you can download at:
http://www.rivavx.com(click on their product button). After you download and installtheir player, the video will be played when you open the file.
