[videoblogging] I've now implemented custom Amazon ads

2007-02-22 Thread Steve Garfield
Hello friends,

I've just implemented custom Amazon ads at the end of the videos for
my client Nina Simonds of Spices of Life.

Take a look at this video, Spices of Life - Chinese New Year: Year of
the Pig.

http://spicesoflife.com/2007/02/13/chinese-new-year-year-of-the-pig/

At the end of the video, you'll see an Amazon ad for the book that
she is reading from, in the video.

This is the perfect ad for Nina since she is also the author of the
book.

Thanks,

Thanks.. She loves it.

I should mention that this was implemented over at blip.tv and
they've now created a campaign for us where all future videos will
get a default ad.

It's sweet.

I'm looking forward to seeing this implemented on the blip.tv

Now, the trick is to get a passport issued in time. Thanks to the Americans

Re: [videoblogging] Re: viewer feedback

2007-02-22 Thread André Sala
Hi,

Just so you know, whenever someone watches a videoblog in the TVTonic
interface, there will be a prominent link to your homepage (specifically the
link URL specified for that item in your RSS).

Sincerely,

Andre Sala
TVTonic Team

On 2/9/07, J. Rhett Aultman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

It makes me feel good to hear this. I often feel like, when I just ask
people to email us or to friend us on MySpace, that I'm screaming into the
void. I know I have an audience, because FeedBurner stats show the
 subscribers.

I also, as far as I can tell, have never grown my audience through word of
mouth from one viewer to the next. Early stats on Google Analytics show
that most people who visit the website are new users who don't come from a
search engine or directory. So, we're winning viewers largely by getting
our URL directly in new hands. This all runs curiously contrary to how I
thought things would go. Yes...Freetime is still just a toddler of a
vlog, but I somehow expected the viral effect would be in stronger force.

I think part of it's content, too, though. I've noticed on LiveJournal,
friends of mine with the largest friends list are generally quite
controversial. They give people something to argue about. I'm beginning
to wonder if vlogs that don't give people a reason to regularly pound
their keyboards in discussion just don't fan out. I see similar things
 happening in text blogs.

Also, I wonder if the aggregator makes a difference. A lot of my audience
comes from TV Tonic, and I didn't see ways for people to access comments,
leave reviews, etc, using the TV Tonic software.

 --
 Rhett.
 http://www.weatherlight.com/freetime

Speaking only from my own experience, it's a very small minority of
viewers who comment and interact. On one of my shows I developed an
extremely active, interested and vocal audience who have created a
project inspired by my efforts and tangential to it. They remain a
  minority of my audience, however.

Re: [videoblogging] joost

2007-02-22 Thread Nox Dineen
I feel like Joost is lacking something.

Maybe it's a critical mass of participating community (the channel chats are
usually pretty empty), maybe it's more of the sort of content I'd watch,
maybe it's more varied types of interaction with the content. I'd like to be
able to research/buy/demo the things I'm watching instantly, without leaving
the Joost client, post clips I'm watching to my blog (admittedly, there are
copyright issues with that one).

Right now it isn't much different than sitting in front of my TV with a
laptop for web communications at the same time.

Looks great, though, I do have to give them that.

[videoblogging] Revlogging redux

2007-02-22 Thread JD Lasica
Just a quick note to let you know that we listen to the community and
put some time into tweaking our UI to make it clear whenever we revlog
a video from elsewhere on the Ourmedia home page.

Markus Sandy of Outhink's development team dove in and added some new
functionality to our editing tool suite so that whenever we point
offsite to a cool video elsewhere, we have a short bit of text
explaining what this is or why we liked it, along with changes to our
standard wording. It now says Revlogged From: and says Producer's
page rather than Member's page. (As before, we don't touch the
media or put it on our servers.)

We sent a note to United Vloggers last night telling them we featured
one of their clips, and they replied a short time later saying they
were already getting lots of inbound traffic and appreciated the
shoutout.

We'd like to do this more often in the coming weeks and months, so
that Ourmedia isn't just about media on the Internet Archive's servers
but also about highlighted socially meaningful or creative videos on
other sites as well. One idea is to give users the ability to create
channels or playlists of media regardless of where the media files
actually are hosted.

NewTeeVee may be posting something about all this in the coming days.

Thanks for the good feedback and input, everyone! And send me links to
any videos for which you'd like to get wider visibility.

co-founder, Ourmedia.org

2007-02-22 Thread Michael Verdi
What are people thinking they'd like do at another vloggercon aside from
meet and hang out (which is a given!)? What developments in the last 9
months do you want to see addressed? What wasn't addressed last time that
should have been? Basically I'm trying to steer the conversation from when
and where to why.

I did a visual ethnography of urban explorers for my grad thesis, using
photography as my primary medium. If we had Vloggercon in NY I'd be in
heaven, filming abandoned subway lines, bridge rooms, and all the beautiful,
decaying, verboten places the city is riddled with.

That said, I vote for whatever location allows maximum attendance. I am all
about meeting you guys!

What Verdi sed. I agree with Michael Verdi. After all, this forum can
be used to iron difficulties with feeds and stuff. So convenient and
in your own time too. I found the video archive of Vloggercon 06 to be
very helpful as well. Link: http://www.vloggercon.com/?page_id=208

Yes I would hang out if it's in NYC or Boston.

Re: [videoblogging] Vloggercon? (was Re: Tuesday FlashMeeting)

2007-02-22 Thread Irina
i think this question is easy to answer

from my end, during vloggercon i was still using a borrowed camera to make
getv. since then, i have a full time job vloggins and have been able to
offer
several vloggers some money for their efforts thru my job.

we had the vloggies -- is this good or bad for the community? how has this
affected
everyone's vlogging?

for my own part, i'm getting LOTS of requests from companies to help them
start a vlog or at least make a video they can get online.

That's very cool.

You've just taken it from 'they're taking my stuff' to 'how can I get

I have not thoroughly investigated Ourmedia (soper slow cel

Just a quick note to let you know that we listen to the community and
put some time into tweaking our UI to make it clear whenever we revlog

I'm not against doing another one. I just hadn't seen anyone say why they
wanted to have another one other than we had one last year so let's have
one this year plus it'll be fun to hang out.

I agree that it should be much easier to have it be much less yahoo-group
centric which should make it pretty interesting.

Heath, I'm with you. I like what NetworkTV is doing for finding videoblogs,
but some type of a standard way to find things, perhaps tags, would be cool.
I like that there are blog search engines. I'd love to see a video search
engine. I guess there's Truveo.

That would be 2 trips to NY state in less than a year for me. I think
I'll fly there for this though.

If it's a sure deal, then I am definitely going to be there this year.

But really you should come to see my friend Brian Walsh's product

 Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that there is another SF Video 2.0
Meetup happening this Monday at 7pm. It is a casual meetup where Bay
Area companies (usually start-ups) and content creators get together
and showcase whatever it is they are working on. Presenters have a
projector and a screen and usually speak for 15-20 min and then do a
QA session after. oh, and this time we have a bigger room at the CNET
HQ so we can hold lots of people.

  This Monday the presenters include:

  Jaman
  vod:pod
  Castfire
  Webshots

So come! And please let us know if you are working on anything you'd
  like to showcase. Thanks...

I mostly want a reason to go to the US.

In my own selfish world - and that's all that matters on the internet -
I'd like to see less making money, more creation. And I don't care for red

I also would like to point out that it doesn't have to be named Vloggercon.

PS. The video vertigo summit last year was very valuable. Tacking on such

RE: [videoblogging] Vloggercon? (was Re: Tuesday FlashMeeting)

2007-02-22 Thread Mike Hudack
I'd be happy to do the same as last year, although with a much larger
list given that the space has grown so much. I've got a few agenda
points and I'm sure that the community as a whole does to. Top of my
list is standards around advertising, but we've also got all the old
chestnuts about interoperability, the shortcomings of MediaRSS, adoption
of MediaRSS, and on and on.

The real question is one of size: last year's Vertigo meeting was just
too large and too short to get things really done. We shouldn't shrink
it, but we should go longer and split people into working groups. Maybe
2-3 days at NYU ITP?

+1 - I especially like the idea of working groups. A 2 day vloggercon and
a 2-3 day video vertigo would make for an insane, but awesome week.

Add OpenID to the agenda. It seems to grow exponentially, but I don't know

Yeah, more 'how', less 'why' this time.

Great idea Randy, I'd love to see a session on RSS, how, why future,
etc. (another tie-in to vertigo?) I think a big problem with RSS is the
speed of the adoption of changes/advancements. Education via these
types of sessions would increase awareness and the more people know and
understand it, the bigger the creative pool will be.

The 'town-hall' style of the sessions last year did kick ass. It would
be cool to have folks from companies that consume and produce rss there
to talk with those attending, a big brain-storm/education thing.

I love the idea of including some working/study groups that might be
able to actually issue a white paper or two from the conference, as
there will be press attention anyway - let's use it to further the
standards for our sector and also open the dialog between sponsors and
producers.

Count me in to help organize a study group on Sponsors Independent
Producers: Working Together.

I think there are plenty of reasons to have another one. For one how
much has changed in just 9 months. It has exploded...that and the
fact is that you still need as human beings to connect with other
people outside your sphere of influance.

Personaly I would just like to meet other vloggers face to faceI
have been doing this for a year now and still have not yet had the
opportunity to meet anyone. There is much to celebrate I think...

I know you and Jay keep saying that you dont see a reason to have

yet, but I still disagree...and that's coming from someone who put a
lot of work into the last one; I understand what an undertaking it
is
to create a two-day event (if it'll even be a two-day event next
time). There is much to discuss. And even more to celebrate!

One thing I kept fighting against last time is how Yahoo-centric it
was; today it will be much easier to bring in perspectives from all
over the web. From the youtubers to Corporate (like NPR and NYT)
those who go it alone. This is the main reason why I want to do it.
I'm selfish: I just want to talk to these other folks and all they
need is a reason to come over.

Tagas are great in bursts IMO, but I am all over the map sometimes

I'd fly to NY, even from London. But I said that about the 2nd day
of VlogEurope, then got drunk at my brother-in-law's wedding on
Saturday and missed my 6am flight. So.

Probably not of interest to many others, but I would be interested in
talking about how video can/will become more internally linkable
within the videos themselves - hypervideo, I guess: clickable
hotspots, frames, subtitles, overlays - how to make this happen with
free tools, and syndicatable with those internal links intact.
Possible with QT now, but v complicated and not free. An extension
of clickable ad technology, surely, but infinitely more powerful.

Also about the future of consumption methods - vlogs on TV for
general public, via Windows Media Centre, Apple TV etc. Until it
becomes as easy as watching TV/picking up emails/Googling, my Real
Life friends still won't watch vlogs themselves, even after I
recommend great vlogs of yours to them. It's too much effort, and
the idea of subscribing baffles them. At some point hopefully it
will become easier for the general public to surf vlogs from their
sofa, but maybe we should predict and prepare more for that change,
so the Sofa Space isn't completely owned by corporate providers again.

I'm sure most people would agree that it would be good to be less
Yahoo-centric, but how? What type of people different to the
thousands of Yahoo subscribers, and what would attract them to
attending? Other than booze?

Rupert

Yeah, more 'how', less 'why' this time.

Great idea Randy, I'd love to see a session on RSS, how, why future,
etc. (another tie-in to vertigo?) I think a big problem with RSS is the
speed of the adoption of changes/advancements. Education via these
types of sessions would increase awareness and the more people know and
understand it, the bigger the creative pool will be.

The 'town-hall' style of the sessions last year did kick ass. It would
be cool to have folks from companies that consume and produce rss there
to talk with those attending, a big brain-storm/education thing.

Much longer Video Vertigo time could be a lot of fun. Particularly if it
were done in a Bar Camp/sleepover setting. We might even get some code
done!

I just ate with Professor Van Every, Jay, Ryanne, and Markus. We
admitted Panel Fatigue, and wanted more time simply hanging out, less
time sitting around doing panels. Some of us remember the legendary
Vloggercue, which Adam Quirk hosted on his rooftop. No panels, but
there was a projector, and demos were given.

Why do we have such self-hatred? Even if attendance were strictly

we want 5000 new people attending that are unfamiliar with the culture

lot of work into the last one; I understand what an undertaking it is
to create a two-day event (if it'll even be a two-day event next

we started talking about the last Vloggercon in December when Josh Leo
brought it up.
we put it on in June.

its healthy that we all start talking about what we want to do.
Vloggercon is us.
i understand that we all want to get together and hang out.
you know I'm about that.
why dont we rent a big campground for a week...run workshops...make
video together...bonfires!
why does it have to be a conference with panels?

forget 2 days.
lets meet for a whole week...
I want to meet everyone's family and kids.
let's talk about an idea and have a whole week to mull it over.

No, it was never in Ohio, but such suggestion was
floated a few
 months
ago. Our European friends would prefer easier access,
and since
our community sort of stretches between the West Coast

Europe, New
 York

for! Can I
get

I leterally have tears in my eyes (maybe it is just lack of sleep).
Either way, I am relieved, excited, proud, whtever that we have the
first version of this out -

http://labs. http://labs.divx.com/LatestOSXDrDivX divx.com/LatestOSXDrDivX

Other than the labs link above, this is the first place this is posted.

hey all
i like the talk about having workshops and meet ups and hangouts
better than sessions or panels.

maybe we have tracts of things happening
i can't get into the vertigo stuff because that's just not my thing
so i'd love to have meet ups or whatever of people die hard into content and
editing
and artsy stuff too.
i mean we're all into similar things. some lean more towards tech, some lean
towards art (some in the middle)
so i'd like to make sure the content creators have some room to hang
and create.

i want to hang out with the editors.
EDITORS y'all.
are you going editing stir crazy like i am?
ok ok

yeah i think it would be cool to hang out for a week.
hells yeah
is it possible?
i hope so.
i think that would rock.
i want to hang out
and watch stuff
and talk
and be in video love.
ok.

i video love you all.

I brought up the ohio vloggercon idea, but sadly it wasn't well received.

Why do we have such self-hatred?
Um, gosh, I didn't suggest reaching out beyond the list through any
self-hatred, or Yahoo Group hatred. Quite the reverse. I hoped that
the rest of my post should have suggested that.

 Even if attendance were strictly
limited to members of this list, it would be a fabulous gathering.

Agreed

Do we want 5000 new people attending that are unfamiliar with the
culture
which we've created here over the past few years? If there is a time
for reaching out to new people, is this it?

Well, from my point of view, I immediately thought that would be cool
- but maybe I've read it all wrong, because I've never been to this
kind of thing before. But then how do you define 'new people' and
how do you select people who are 'familiar' with the culture you've
been developing here for a few years?

 Are you flying across the
Atlantic Ocean to meet people you've been watching and corresponding
with for months, or absolute strangers?

Um, both, definitely. But that's just my view - I wouldn't want to
force dilution of the core against anyone's will.
