  All:

Thought I might bring this up for discussion (the issue having recently made

national news), as some may not be fully aware of their rights while

shooting video in or on public lands and places. The ramifications of this

story are chilling, but not insurmountable if one knows their rights.

On March 5th of this year Anthony Graber drove his motorcycle recklessly,

until being pulled over by a Maryland State plainclothes policeman. Graber

wore a GoPro HD helmet-cam, recording his antics prior and after the police

stop. He was on a public highway, in clear daylight and the camcorder was in

plain sight (GoPros are rather bulky and VERY obvious, if you've never seen

one).

After the incident Graber posted his vid on YouTube, including scenes of his

stop by the policemen. This apparently rubbed law enforcement the wrong way,

who on April 7th showed up at Graber's door with a search and arrest warrant

for wiretapping under Maryland State law (resulting from Anthony's video

post on YT). Maryland wiretap law mandates two-party consent for electronic

recording. Police seized all Graber's computers, cameras and electronics as

purportedly containing or constituting evidence.

...Problem is Graber broke no wiretap laws!

If you'd like to discuss WHY Graber broke no wiretap laws, post accordingly.

Otherwise, lacking that interest, one gets what they get should the

wrongfully cite of wiretapping ever come up, after shooting footage in

public. ;)

I really felt compelled to shout out to this list that Michael Verdi needs your

Well, technology finally caught up and I got a notice from YT about 2 videos I
posted over near 2 years ago. I always hoped that even if I added a music track
under a bunch of dialogue it might not get detected but not so anymore. The
good news is that YT only added a iTunes and Amazon link to buy the music which
is a win win situation. Just hoping they don't pull my whole account off. Time

ax the event because he did not get to the break even # of 30 by the July 1

Effectively, Pixelodeon was Vloggercon for 2007.
It was a big and wonderful festival of web video at the AFI in LA.
Seminal moment in videoblogging.

we need a bit time to have energy for the next passionate
conference. But if it had been an overwhelming success wouldn't it
 have taken place in 2007?
  - Wasn't the vloggercon successful?
  - Did the vloggercon mean too much effort (maybe for earning no
money - I don't know the details for the organisers)?
Hopefully it's not a redundant topic - I was searching and reading
 for one hour.

No good answer. I think because they were so fun, it created a lot of
expectation for the next ones to be better. Difficult to live up to.
Also putting on events with little money takes its tool. It's several
months of full-time work. There was something special about how
 spontaneous and crazy Vloggercon was.

An ambitious mix of Europeans have put on Vlogeurope every year since
 2005: http://vlogeurope.com
Adam has put on http://vloggercue.blogspot.com/ a couple times.
 (2005/2007)
http://pixelodeon.org/ was a related event put on by this community
 in 2007.

Bill Streeter did a great job organizing
http://twitter.com/vloggercamp in 2008...but the crash of the economy
and high gas prices cancelled it.

There are other online video events that have popped up as well like
New Media Expo (http://www.blogworldexpo.com/) and NewTeeVee Live
 (http://events.newteevee.com/live/09/). Different beasts though.

Events seem to happen when they need to happen.

John -

Most likely the large majority (if not all) of that purchased music is full
copyright. Your purchase is for personal use - not any for of re-use or
public broadcast, unless you acquire additional licensing permissions,
generally in bulk via BMI and/or ASCAP.

YouTube is pulling videos that use copy-written music.

There are lots of independent artists however who would love for you to use
their music and give them on-screen credit and on-page links.

  Ok...listen. ..

You use MPEG Streamclip to convert your video BEFORE you begin editing it. NOT
after.

You use MPEG Streamclip to uncompress the MP4 files so that you can edit them.
You cant edit MP4 files. MP4 are highly compressed and if you try to edit them,
you're going to have problems.

You use your editing program to export your video.

Ok? Stop trying to edit MP4 files. Stop. Stop. STOP. STOP!!

Now...go back and reread what Gena wrote you previously. She told you what to
do. You didnt care to listen then and I'm having doubts you're going to listen
this time.

Some of the best stuff that came out of the first Navlopomo in 2007

if you've been editing on imovie 06 for 3 years
*you* might have a violent reaction to imovie 09

I think it’s weird that there’s nothing between iMovie 06 and Final
Cut Pro. iMovie 08 and 09 is way to basic, and doesn’t have a good
 enough precision.
I loved iMovie 06. Easy to use and fast. iMovie 08 and 09 works
better with family movies. At least that’s my opinion.

I've been using iMovie HD 06 (6.0.3) since 2006 with Sony FX1 (HDV,
analog tape), it's great.  I heard some complaints on this group
about later versions of iMovie being dumbed down.

And since iMovie 08 seems to be devoid of any of the good movie and
audio editing features that 06 had, I’m wondering what other folks
are using now if they want to have a good set of editing tools
 without going to professional software.

I need geotagging for my photos, which will then be bulk uploaded to
Flickr, with Flickr uploader.  iPhoto 09 is getting good review for
geotagging, so I'm considering upgrading to iLife '09.  Anybody have a
violent reaction to iMovie 07, 08, or 09?

 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090404003545AAOYVCP
Sorry but iMovie HD is no longer available as a download.
Apple removed it with the introduction of iLife and iMovie 09.
The links that Apple still has on its download site are only
upgrades to the original version 6 which you must have on your
 computer before it will work.
Now the only way that you might still be able to get iMovie HD is to
find someone that has an older mac and still has the iLife 06
 installation disc.
Or I have seen iLife 06 discs for sale on eBay.
Why don't you upgrade to iLife 09 and the new iMovie 09.
It has all the special effects back again.
 Regards, Zyfert

So, I can upgrade to iLife 09, install iMovie HD '06 from my discs?
 Yes, according to:

 http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28t=5089

Anybody else doing this: dual copies of iMovie HD 06 iMovie 09?

crap out with titles. So far, the work around is to use the Streamclip Mpeg app

John,
I've a feeling that iMovie imported it for editing in MPEG4 format
instead of DV. I've once written about how iMovie's MPEG4 video
editing format was bullshit, because it took very long to import and
quality was lacking (e.g. titles looked bad). My short writeup at
http://theory. isthereason. com/?p=705

Bottomline: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's way better to have
iMovie import/transcode into DV format to keep everything clean.

I'm not sure it's a question of nobody wanting to run it. I think
it's more a question of people not wanting to travel halfway across
the country/world to attend a vlogging event.

You know that I love this community, and so I'm not being negative
about it. Just being realistic about what I see as people's
priorities and interests.

Bill Streeter tried valiantly to organise Vloggercamp last year, and
there was a lot of interest from people signing up on the wiki - but
in the end people just weren't motivated enough to pay the
registration fee, let alone buy plane tickets.

Pixelodeon got quite a few people attending because it was all about
screening lots of videos in a posh venue. But even then most of the
people who attended were from the West, I think. And that was two
years ago, and things have changed in the vlogosphere and in the
economy.

The original Vloggercons and Vloggies worked because of the excitement
of vlogging being so new. I wish I'd been able to attend.

There's a small number of people here who do attend podcamps, new
media expo, etc. The people who make their living from social media
that you see on Twitter constantly tweeting about the latest social
media trends and business opportunities, and telling you how to blog
and make money from blogging. But this doesn't include the majority
of vloggers, I don't think.

And I'm not sure that most of the vloggers I know would be that into
attending a big corporate Las Vegas expo as opposed to something much
more intimate.

What does anybody else think? Maybe Jeffrey could pipe in with his
experience of organising VlogEurope?

[videoblogging] Importing Xacti vids into iMovie

2009-02-27 Thread John Coffey
For the last 3 years, I've been shooting DV footage and importing into iMovieHD
with no problems. I've been playing around with the Xacti E2 and importing into
iMovieHD as MP4 but it doen't seem to play well, especially with titles. I just
read a Tweet from @missbhavens and she too is unhappy with Xacti iMovie setup.
Is the best wat to edit this footage with the Mpeg converter (name escapes me
right now) that converts it back to DV footage before iMovie import. Or is
there a simple fix by changing the bitstream rate.
Thanks, I really want to get the hang of this for faster uploads and avoiding
the miniDV camera at times.

Well, in case anyone was wondering where our new president
 stood on
copyright laws and how best to change themlook no
 further...

Understand this is a big deal, a really big deal, this was
 they guy
who got the court to agree that putting your songs on your
 computer
and making them availible on a peer to peer
 network violated the
law, yes that was overturned but now this guy is in the
 Justice
 Department...

Change we can believe in?.time will tell...

 http://tech.yahoo.com/news/cnet/20090205/tc_cnet/83011357831015738138

Obama's DOJ pick is RIAA lawyer who killed
 Grokster

 - President Obama is continuing to fill the senior ranks of
 the U.S.
Department of Justice with the copyright industry's
 favorite lawyers.

Donald Verrilli announced Wednesday that he had been named
 associate
deputy attorney general. Verrilli is the lawyer who pulled
 the plug
on Grokster, sued Google on behalf of Viacom, and
 represented the
Recording Industry Association of America against a
 Minnesota woman
named Jammie Thomas who's accused of illicit file
 sharing.

This follows a string of other pro-copyright industry picks
 that
Obama has made. Last month, there was Obama's selection
 last month of
a top RIAA lawyer--currently squaring off in court with
 Harvard
 University's Berkman Center--to be third-in-command at
 the Justice
 Department.

Vice President Joe Biden has long been an ally of the
 recording
industry, urging the criminal prosecutions of
 copyright-infringing
peer-to-peer users and trying to create a new federal
 felony
involving playing unauthorized music. And another senior
 Justice
Department post has gone to the top antipiracy enforcer for
 the
Business Software Alliance, a strong supporter of the
 Digital
 Millennium Copyright Act's anti-circumvention rules.

Obama's latest choice, Verrilli, is a senior litigator
 in the
Washington, D.C. offices of the Jenner Block law
 firm.

In technology circles, he's probably best known for
 arguing the
Minnesota case called Capitol v. Thomas. In that case, the
 RIAA
convinced the judge to accept jury instructions saying that

the making copyrighted sound recordings available for
 electronic
distribution on a peer-to-peer network violated the
 law, even if
 none had actually been transferred.

Verrilli won the first round, with a federal jury saying in
 October
2007 that Thomas had to pay $220,000. But then the judge
 threw out
the verdict, concluding the jury instructions he approved
 were
misleading; the RIAA is hoping to hold on to the initial
 verdict and
 is currently appealing.

One reason why this case is especially relevant to
 Verrilli's new job
is that the Justice Department intervened in the Thomas
 case on
 behalf of the RIAA.

That has already caused some tech lobbyists to wonder
 privately about
whether or not Verrilli will recuse himself from matters
 that affect
their former clients. Another example of a relevant case
 involves the
Supreme Court asking the Justice Department for input on a
 case
involving Cablevision--another lawsuit that Verrilli was
 part of on
 behalf of copyright holders.

A Jenner Block press release says that Verrilli
 led the Jenner
Block team that is pursuing a $1 billion copyright case on
 behalf of
Viacom Inc. against Google and YouTube, alleging massive
 violations
of Viacom's copyrighted motion pictures and television
 shows. Last
year, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman even called YouTube a
 rogue
 company.

The lawsuit filed in New York in March 2007 accuses YouTube

 of massive intentional copyright infringement
 and seeks more than
$1 billion in damages. Other plaintiffs include Country
 Music
 Television, Paramount Pictures Corporation, Black
 Entertainment
Television (all of which are Viacom affiliates).

From a legal perspective, Verrilli's zealous defense of
 large
copyright holders reached its apogee in the Grokster case.

MGM had sued Grokster, saying that it effectively induced
 its users
to commit copyright infringement. When the Supreme Court
 heard
arguments on March 29, 2005 in the most important copyright
 case that
decade, MGM chose Verrilli to represent its side.

The recording industry has lost 25 percent of its
 revenue since the
onslaught of these services, Verrilli told the
 justices. And that's
particularly critical, because, remember, this is really...
 a venture-
capital business. Most of the records we

Hi,

Are people interested in having a Vloggercon in 2009?

I've got an idea.

A Mashup of Conferences? June 24-27 at UMass Amherst

Bill Densmore out at UMass has reserved the campus for June 24-27 for
a conference.

'A Mashup of Conferences'
We were talking about calling it something like 'A Mashup of
Conferences' and inviting lots of people to co-host their conferences
there that weekend.

In 2006 he ran Media Giraffe conference on journalism, MGP2006.

TOPICS and GROUPS
I'd already thought of the possibility of having a Podcamp Amherst out
there.

He's going to corral the media and education people.

What do you think about getting a bunch of Social Media people to join
in?

I'd help in getting multi media/video production people...

Kind of like a pirate ship conference.

In addition to social media, video, podcasting I was also thinking
about Etsy crafts people, moped riders, and photographers, like
that... a wide range...

Also, it'd be fun to schedule hikes and social events around it too.

LOGISTICS

COSTS
Ballpark cost estimates are:

Meeting rooms: $6K
A/V: $2K

UMASS has tons of free WiFi

LODGING
Dorms would be available too for a very reasonable rate as well as hte
Campus Center Hotel.

Campus Center Hotel

FOOD
Food would be available at campus center for people to buy.

TRAVEL
Traveling to UMass

BTW, AMTRAK runs to Amherst

DC - NY - HARTFORD - AMHERST - MONTREAL

LOOKING FOR IDEAS
I'm looking for what your ideas on this might be...

Interested in organizing, sponsoring, streaming?

You can ping your feedburner feed to get it to reacquire the data. If
that doesn't work, go to your feed on the feedburner site, select
Troubleshootize , then scroll down the page to Resync Now and hit
that button.

Before you do that, you may as well check to see if feedburner sees
your feed properly. The problem could be that your site isn't feeding
feedburner or feedburner isn't feeding iTunes.

If it's not a feedburner problem, you can also ping iTunes to force it
to reacquire your feedburner feed.

 Hey John,

 2 things:

 1) Your feedburner feed is not showing any enclosures for
 your video
files, which is why iTunes is empty. And I see that your
 posts don't
have any rel=enclosure anywhere in the source
 code. You need to
add rel=enclosure to the link to your mov files.
 I'm surprised
that you've ever had enclosures iTunes files
 without a
rel=enclosure in your links, but perhaps
 they've been overlooking
it and they've just tightened up on their enclosure
 generation
 procedure.

So your link to, for example:
 a
 href=http://www.jchtv.com/vlog/pirates.mov;
 type=video/quicktime
should have a rel=enclosure in it, so that
 Feedburner knows to make
 that file into an enclosure.
 a
 href=http://www.jchtv.com/vlog/pirates.mov;
 type=video/
 quicktime rel=enclosure
(i haven't copied all the vpip instructions you've
 got in there as
well, because it'd fill up several lines here, but you
 get the
picture - just add the rel=enclosure to
 what's already there.

Then you need to make sure that Feedburner is set to make
 enclosures
for podcasting, in your Feedburner settings. Then resync
 again.

And you may need to turn off the vpip feed generator
 plugin, if
you've got that Activated. Caused havoc with my
 enclosures last year
 - might be fixed now, but try turning it off if it still
 doesn't work.

If you STILL haven't got enclosures, email Feedburner
 directly or
leave a new post on the forum and ask them to reset your
 enclosures.
I know that's something that they don't allow
 people to do manually -
you have to request it. But I think the
 rel=enclosure deal should
 fix it.

 2) Looking at your feed made me realised I'm not
 subscribed to it. I
 am now!

 it was just

It seems like WordPress 2.6 broke a lot of plugins. I know
 that people
using PodPress that updated to WP 2.6 had problems posting
 new podcast
episodes afterward, and last I looked were eagerly awaiting
 a PodPress
 update to fix the problem.

The new WordPress update schedule has really gotten on my
 nerves in
terms of having to update multiple sites every month. But
 that's got
to be nothing to the nightmare created for plugin
 developers. Can't
just write something and count on it to keep working. Got
 to keep up
with WordPress development on a monthly basis, or more
 frequently to
stay ahead and not have your stuff broken.

Anyway, you may be right about there being a correlation
 between a new
version of WordPress and a new problem. You're right,
 vPIP 1.13i was
released in July to maintain compatibility with WordPress
 2.6.

So here's the deal...
The Canon HV20 really does shoot in 24P - it just does it in a weird
way. The stuttering you are seeing is partly because that's what 24P
looks like compared to 60i and partly because you have to do a reverse
telecine to put the progressive frames back in order. Here's my
shorthand notes on how to do it:

Ok, it seems that FCP (at least v 5.1.4) doesn't support the 24p mode
of this camera. There is a way to make it work but it's a pain in the
ass and you probably don't want to do it unless you're a little crazy
like me. Here's how it goes:

I had to make my own easy setup in FCP that looks like this:

Sequence Preset - take the HDV 1080p24 preset, duplicate it and change
the compressor to Apple Intermediate Codec. Helps to give it a snappy
name like AIC 1080p24

Capture Preset - HDV - Apple Intermediate Codec

Device Control Preset - HDV Firewire Basic

The crappy part (at least I think so - maybe not a problem for you) is
that you can't log capture - it just lets you name your clip and it
starts recording. So it's kind of like iMovie here.

Then once you've captured your clips (if you stopped and started
recording on the tape you must make a new clip), you have to open them
in QT Pro and figure out the pulldown cadence, ie, interlaced frame,
interlaced frame, progressive frame, progressive frame, progressive
frame.
There are these possibilities:
p-p-i-i-p
p-i-i-p-p
i-p-p-p-i
p-p-p-i-i
i-i-p-p-p

If you find that the clip is that last one, i-i-p-p-p, then you have
to remove those beginning interlaced frames by using the arrow keys to
move through those first frames till you hit the first progressive
frame, then hit 'o' then apple x and then save. Now this clip is
p-p-p-i-i.

Ok then open up Cinema Tools. and open a clip. The go to the Clip menu
and select Reverse Telecine. Here are the settings
Capture Mode: F1-F2
File: New (smaller)
Conform to:
24.0
Standard upper/lower (checked)
Fields:
p-p-i-i-p = AA
p-i-i-p-p = BB
i-p-p-p-i = BC
p-p-p-i-i = CD

Style 1 on the drop down.
Click Ok to start the process.

Then back in FCP import your new 24p clips and stick them on your new
AIC 1080p24 sequence!

Exporting once you're done editing

Now for some reason exporting using quicktime conversion to apple tv
or ipod get's all messed up. So instead, export as a QuickTime Movie
(it can be a reference movie if you want) and then open that up with
QuickTime Pro. Then export for Apple TV and iPod and you will be
amazed. BTW, the Apple TV export will be at 1280 X 720!

We need 35 people to register to make this happen. We
 don't have
nearly that number yet--I think maybe 10 so far. So if you
 guys think
we should I can extend the registration by about a week.
 People can
even register after that too, but we need at least 35 to
 commit at
least a month in advance because we aren't taking any
 sponsorship
money for this. Everything will be paid for from the
 registration
funds, and we're operating pretty much at cost. At this
 point I don't
see it happening unless we get about 25 more people to sign
 up. Don't
get me wrong, I really want to do this. But I can't
 afford to hire the
chef and pay for the camp if no one shows up.

We can still make it happen if you want, but I need you
 help getting
the word out and getting people signed up soon.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Re: [videoblogging] Wordpress vs Blogger for Vloggers

2008-03-27 Thread John Coffey
Heath, I second the book that Mr Verdi is suggesting,
Head Start HTML CSS. I'm half way thru it but take in
a little bit each day. Besides, don't you want your
own domain name and not one owned by blogger?
John
--- Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hey Heath,
I don't know if this helps anything at all but here
 my experience. I
started blogging with blogger just over 5 years ago
 (wow I found blog
posts with video from Mar 2003). Previously I had
 taught myself web
design in the late 90s using programs like
 Dreamweaver to create crazy
nested tables. Blogger's template tags and css were
 totally confusing
to me. Luckily I was able to use dreamweaver to edit
 (mangle?) my
blogger template and make it look the way I wanted.
 Then in 2005 when
I switched to Wordpress I was, like you, completely
 lost for about a
week. I learned that messing with the php stuff made
 my blog break so
I stopped doing that and stuck to selecting a theme
 that I liked and
switching out images with new ones given the same
 name. I also saw
that there were a bunch of colors and fonts listed
 in the styles.css
file and I could change those without causing too
 much trouble. Little
by little with trial and error I started to
 understand how things
worked - html to build the structure, css to control
 the layout, php
to talk to the database. That alone got my pretty
 far but the one
thing that really made a difference for me (besides
 lots and lots of
time sticking with it) was reading Head First HTML
 with CSS XHTML -
 http://tinyurl.com/3a6n6v
After a few days working though that book I could
 suddenly see
things in HTML and CSS - they didn't look like just
 a bunch of code.
That's when using a text editor to create designs
 became preferred and
easier to use than the things that try to hide it
 all from you.
So I guess I'm saying that I feel your pain Heath.
 Don't get
discouraged because it's hard after just a few days.
 It took me a few
years to feel like I had some sort of clue. Now,
 about Wordpress being
more difficult to use that Blogger... Yes it is. Can
 it be as easy as
Blogger? Probably not without giving up some of the
 flexibility that
it designed for. In the big scheme of things is
 Wordpress fairly easy
for what it provides? Heck yeah! Themes, plugins and
 widgets are easy
and powerful ways to customize it and fairly easy to
 use once you get
 the hang of it.

 Hope that helps,

 Verdi

One solution is to find 1,000 True Fans. While some artists have
discovered this path without calling it that, I think it is worth
trying to formalize. The gist of 1,000 True Fans can be stated
simply:

A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer,
craftsperson,
performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author - in other
words, anyone producing works of art - needs to acquire only 1,000
True Fans to make a living.

A True Fan is defined as someone who will purchase anything and
everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to see you sing.
They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your
stuff
even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google
Alert
set for your name. They bookmark the eBay page where your out-of-
print editions show up. They come to your openings. They have you
sign their copies. They buy the t-shirt, and the mug, and the hat.
They can't wait till you issue your next work. They are true fans.

Re: [videoblogging] Photoshop hints for Flickr newbie

2008-02-06 Thread John Coffey
Wow, thanks for taking the time Irene for giving me such a great roadmap for my
pics. I'm gonna save and print this and start scanning away!
  JC

Irene Duma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Hi John,

If you¹re spending all that time scanning them, which takes time, I¹d
suggest scanning at print resolution, which is 300 dpi. You never know when
you might need something going to print. You can always downconvert for web
later. But you can¹t take web ready art and make it print ready.

Make some backups of these scans, burn to CD or DVD, call them your
masters, and keep them safe.

Now you can prep for web. Make a copy of your scans. Web-ready art needs 72
dpi. And yes, Flickr will resize for you. It also allows for different size
viewings, so I think putting up pics bigger than 600px wide is smart.
Depends also what you are doing this for. Are you putting them up with
creative commons licensing for others to use? Knowing why you are putting
them up online may help you decide what size is best. There are lots of
pros up there. Maybe you can see what they are doing, or ask them.

Ok, back to prepping for web. Remember jpeg is lossy compression, so do not
do your corrections to jpegs. It reapplies the compression and degrades the
photo. Do them to .psd files. Save to jpeg at very end only.

You may want to colour correct your pics. Depends on your scanner, they vary
in how well they portray colours.

In Photoshop, you can colour correct your pics. Easiest is with levels.

You can do ImageAdjustments auto levels

Or

Image Imagelevels.

I usually do the second one. Adjust this so that the blacks are true black,
and the white is true white. Slide the little arrows in to touch where the
³peaks² start. Makes a world of difference.

After scanning you may want to do a Filter sharpenunsharp mask. That can
sharpen it up, make less blurry.

Then you want to Save for web. Quality 70 % is usually good enough.

You can automate these tasks (not levels or unsharp mask, those are done
individually according to each pic¹s needs.)

But Auto levels and then Save to Web could be automated.

First you record an Action: Windowaction. Basically you do your optimizing
to one photo, and record the steps you take.

Then you Batch it. Fileautomatebatch. You can apply your Action to all the
pics you have in a folder. That will automate the process, and help you save
time.

For your blog, you might want to make an action that resizes them to 600px.
But start from the best quality to do this. Meaning don¹t do this to a jpeg
you have all ready optimized for the web. Lossy compression is a a bummer
that way.

There are lots of tutorials on the web on how to do this.

Hope that helps.

[videoblogging] Video card needed for HD FCP or iMovie

won't import into iMovie either.

My Specs G5 dual 2.0 ghz, 4 g Ram, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

Do I need a new video card or easier work around.

[videoblogging] Show in A Box...hicupp? Problems copy paste from Blip

I'm having problems with Show in A Box retaining wrong

post it into my Vlogsplosiion Media grid, and press

(Eg.

It saves into the grid like my posts that work
correctly but when I hit Flash on my site,
www.jchtv.com it does nothing, and when I hover the
mouse over the Flash link it shows a URL that is
different and ends in .swf
This only happened on videos that I tried to edit
today and had no problems with the dozen shows I
upgraded. Is there a reason Wordpress is not seeing
changes I make to the Vlogsplosion grid? Problem posts
are 9/18/2006 and older. Thanks John

Hey Patrick, good luck with surgery. I work in a
hospital and the 2 things I would be concerned about
would be theft and privacy policy of the hosptial.
It's not uncommon for a patient to go for a test and

tripod I just bought from Radio Shack, my iRiver
 with my cliptie mic
(The latter for better audio quality and the iRiver
 alone to capture
PT sessions and because I'll no doubt need it for
 other things related
to my surgery anyway), and a decent supply of
 batteries to last me the
entire time I'm in the hospital (Which they're
 talking would be
overnight, but you know how overly-optimistic
 doctors like to make
 things sound).

Question is has ANYONE ever tried this AS A PATIENT?
  Now mind you,
I'm NOT talking about violating someone else's right
 to privacy here.
I mean it's not like I'm gonna be recording while
 someone is talking
to their doctor or nurse or whatever as that would
 CERTAINLY be a
privacy issue. But WHAT IF I'm put in MY OWN room
 where the bed I'll
be in IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE ROOM?

If need be, I'll forego the tripod and hold the cam
 in my hand.

Of course, I won't be able to edit and upload till I
 get home, but at
least it'll give me something to do after I catch up
 with all the
email you guys post to the list. :)

BTWAs things stand now - Pre-Op for my lap band
 now appears to be
set for Dec. 6th with the surgery itself a week
 later.

 Thoughts comments anyone?

 Cheers :D

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Advice on how to get to 100-250k views a day (quickly)?

2007-11-13 Thread John Coffey

Wow, Andrew comes out bitch slapping! Let's book this
on Jerry Springer!

Speaking of Jason, he's most known for:

 1. Stealing the idea and the people from Gizmodo to
 make the
 identical knock off- Engagdget
 2. Not paying employees fair wages.
 3. Trying to steal Amanda from Rocketboom (only one
 day after news
 broke)
 4. Trying to steal top posters from Digg for
 Netscape
 2. Killing Netscape by making it into a Diggclone
 and then getting
 fired from AOL
 3. Building a site called Mahalo which is suffering
 badly and no one
 likes.

Not just based on these few examples which have been
 extremely
destructive to the world, but also based on his
 regular,
stereotypical activity of attacking people instead
 of their work, I
just want to throw out that Jason's only means of
 being popular is
exactly this: taking and causing conflict.

Look no further than Ann Coulter. It works great for
 her. If they
can't do it based on their own good ideas and they
 cant do it while
collaborating with others, at least they can do it
 by shitting all
 over everyone.

Usually a good post has a lot of conversation but
 doesn't cause
others to speak out so negatively at the author.
 This is likely the
reason why there have been SO MANY bad reactions to
 Jason's post:
When one lives their life so selfishly while
 attacking and being
brutal, its destructive to everyone around because
 it causes damage
and rubs off on the rest off.

My original answer to the original thread was likely
 not considered.
The best way to grow your audience is not by
 spamming everyone. Its
by improving your show. At this point Jason, you
 really shouldn't be
asking any other questions until you get that one
 worked out. You got
Veronica, she's great. You should be paying Veronica
 more, you need
to invest in some better equipment and get some
 production help. How
 can you improve the show?

We ask ourselves this question every single day and
 it continues to
receive the most concern out of every thing we do.

Oh boy... I probably shouldn't even respond to
 something so libelous.
However, this is so false I've got to correct it.

  1. Stealing the idea and the people from Gizmodo
 to make the
  identical knock off- Engagdget

 False.

I didn't steal the idea because the idea was Peter
 Rojas'. Nick Denton
back Peter's idea first in the form of Gizmodo, we
 (the weblogs, Inc
team) backed it second in the form of Engadget.

For background, I offered Peter Rojas equity in
 Weblogs, Inc. and he
gladly left his ~$1,200 a month job with Nick Denton
 at Gizmodo. Nick
Denton promised Peter equity and never gave it him,
 we did. We
invested our own money into Engadget which
 quickly--thanks to Peter
and his team--grew to 3x the size of the incumbent
 Gizmodo.

We sold Weblogs, Inc. (and without getting into
 exact details) Peter
 became a millionaire over night.

  2. Not paying employees fair wages.

 False.

What are you basing this on? We paid hundreds of
 folks at Weblogs,
Inc. per month well over six figures for years. We
 paid the best rates
in the blogging business (better than or as good as
 Denton depending
on the time). When AOL bought Weblogs, Inc. we hired
 around 20-30
 folks full-time.

  3. Trying to steal Amanda from Rocketboom (only
 one day after news
  broke)

 False.

How could we steal her if she left? She was a free
 agent and looking
for work. AOL really wanted to hire her so we made
 her an offer (a
very nice large offer). She took another large offer
 from ABC's.

Are people not allowed to make offers? Would you
 rather talented folks
not get offers when they've achieved success? After
 working for you
should Amanda never work again? I'm confused.

  4. Trying to steal top posters from Digg for
 Netscape

 False.

We offered the top posters from digg pay for work
 they had previously
not been paid for. We paid ~40 of them to work on
 Netscape/Propeller
doing things like putting in high-quality stories,
 taking our false
stories and spam, and cleaning up the mess that is
 social news
sometimes. It was a really good idea and Propeller
 is the second
largest social news site in the world.

  2. Killing Netscape by making it into a Diggclone
 and then getting
  fired from AOL

 False.

Jon Miller the CEO of AOL was fired and I left in
 solidarity within 24
 hours. That's how I do I'm loyal. I started
 working with a fairly
well known venture capital firm with ten days of
 that.

Netscape was being shutdown when folks at AOL asked
 me what I'd do
with it. I said I would build an editorialized
 version of digg where
the news was fact-checked. We did, it worked. The
 only reason they
moved it to it's own domain--from what I've been
 told--is that it is
more valuable with a new name (i.e. in terms of a
 sale) and that
redirecting Netscape's audience to AOL.com is highly
 profitable
because AOL.COM is the most profitable part of the
 empire (and social
news sites have a harder time making money).

  3. Building a site called Mahalo which is
 suffering badly and no one
  likes.

The 1.5 million uniques who've come in the last 30
 days (our fifth
month) might disagree with you. :-)

In terms of Veronica you can be sure she has a much
 better deal than
the one she had at CNET. You can also be sure she
 has much more
 resources behind her than ever.

Good luck with that second show.

If you want more views, put it across the board on multiple servers and hosts.
You'd be

You may also experiment with short sweet and sexy promos. Across the board.

Sex is what attracts attention the most, the hook is something that you have an
instinct

Then, as a daily show, you are a service, liek Rocketboom, more than a brand

What I enjoyed with The Late Nite Mash experiment was a surprise to me...coming

All the best with your show.

Rupert, excellent lesson. Gonna print this!
  JJC

Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Schlomo,

Feedburner will make an enclosure for the first video file it sees a
link to, unless it sees a rel=enclosure element.

So when you used to just link to your mov file, it'd turn that into
an enclosure that iTunes could see.

But now you're copying the Blip copy paste code. And that contains
two links to Flash files with rel=enclosures in them. So
Feedburner sees that and turns the flv file into the only enclosure
for that post, and so iTunes ignores it. If you also had a
rel=enclosure in your Quicktime link at the bottom, Feedburner is
smart enough to prioritise the mov file over the flv file.

So what you need to do is add a rel=enclosure to your Quicktime
link. Then Resync your feed totally (the nuclear option) in the
Troubleshooting section of Feedburner and you'll be fine. It will
prioritize your mov rel=enclosure over the two flv rel=enclosures
in the Blip player code. Though you could just delete those, just to
be sure.

Actually, there's something else you should be aware of. If you copy
paste your code immediately, before Blip's had time to do the Flash
conversion, the Copy Paste code that they give you links to the
original file (Quicktime mov or whatever), with a rel=enclosure.
This is what you have on Rabbits and Weddings, which is the only
other mov file that's an enclosure in your feed.

But if you wait until the Flash conversion is done before copying
pasting, you get only the flv files in the Player code, with
rel=enclosure in the links, and that's what screws you up.

What Blip should really do is either get rid of the rel=enclosure
attached to flv files, which hardly anybody wants, or just STOP
changing the copy paste code after it's done conversions. It
should keep the original file in the copy paste code. It'd still
play in a Flash player when clicked, because of a magic little script
Blip puts in there that tells it to play the flv file if one is
available. And it would stop you having to manually code a link to
your mov file with a rel=enclosure.

thanks vloggers for supporting me from the beginning. My original
intention was only to keep it going for a year. I've decided to keep

would anyone want to come to my own website, when they have these nice
 options?

A lot of bloggers are dealing with these issues.
for many people, sticking with a social network makes a lot of sense.
Obviously, if you're work is good and you particpate in the community,
people will get to know you.

A couple reasons why other people like to maintain their own site:
--A blog is an artform in itself. I want to be able to design it
anyway I want...with all the functionality I want.
--i want my own URL.
--i expect the current popular social media nettwork to be unpopular
in 5 years. It may be almost impossible to pull out old posts from
that site.
--I'm documenting my life and want to make sure I own my information.
--i want to sell ads on my own site and not deal with someone else's
terms of service.

I see many vloggers finding the happy medium.
They upload to Youtube or wherever.but then archive the videos on
their own blog that has their own look. Best of both worlds.

David, if you shut down your site, I will be forced to delete the link to your
dead site. Please don't make me work at it anymore than I have to. I'm lazy
enough.

  Hey Daryl,

I couldnt agree more with you.

I am at the point where I will probably shutting my site down and not
bothering any more. I've spent a massive amount of time trying to
promote my site to no avail. I think it's time to stop banging my head
against the wall now.

I think these social media sites are great and I do spend a fair
amount of time on them myself. True. The user population on social
media sites can tend to be, umm, odd. There are good people there
though. You just have to wade through mess of the others sometimes.

And in my opinion, so far Facebbook and myspace looks like a nice
place for a new emerging culture to vent all of their sexual
frustration. Doesn't anyone value real content anymore? Or is everyone
 just trying to get laid?

People do not talk this way in public, but when they hide behind a
fictitious user name, they spew out all kinds of perverted stuff.

Is it just my bad experience so far... are you guys and gals having a
 better experience than mine?

Can we show a little backbone?

Re: [videoblogging] New Version of iMovie

2007-08-07 Thread John Coffey
Well I guess my 1 month boycott of uploading to Youtube might have to end.

Steve Garfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just took a quick look at the new
iMovie that was announced today.

Info here:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/

Totally new interface to make making movies easier.

One thing I noticed was this:

The YouTube connection.

Is your YouTube™ audience clamoring for more? Send your movie
directly to your YouTube™ account from iMovie so others can enjoy it,
rate it, and leave comments for the director.

We've been asking Apple for this feature for years. Actually, we've
been asking for a BlogThis! feature to allow posting to any blog, but
sending directly to YouTube makes it so easy for people to get
started with videoblogging.

Since I've been using iMovie a lot more recently, I'll be interested
in trying this out at the Apple Store to see if it can speed up my
workflow. Redoing the iMovie application can only be a good thing.
