I was a PC guy a few years ago and bought a Mac Mini to get into Apple and
video production.
There's no looking back.
Although I have an iMac now, the Mac Mini did me proud.

iMovie (free with OS X) can work for your basic videos, but Final Cut Pro (or
Express) is the real powerhouse.

Ratbag ... once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

I'd address 2 issues with one purchase, if possible, as I do need
primarily to address the video issue but thought I could also get a
suitable replacement for the Canon point-n-shoot that had a coronary
last month. Maybe not possible in one lo price unit, but that's ok.

So I've looked into the Zi8 which amazon has on a special price with
xtras thrown in to cement the deal. They are also offering the CG10 at
about $124. and that looks pretty good too. Getting past newer/older

One last note about something that surprised me on the Xacti's
  external mic

  like
the VPC-HD1000/2000. You'll likely need a $2.50 converter from Radio

  Hi Julian,

I've saved the email that you wrote as a reference for the future. It
was the most considered and considerate response I got, and well, the
future rushed in the door this past weekend. Right off the bat, I'm
apologizing for this surprise email and if it's too much trouble to
answer, and it may well be, I am not offended. I do have a Skype
account w/video capability so if that's an option, I'm available at
your convenience. Here's the reason for this rushed if not frantic
  communique,

A non-profit org. where I volunteer, heard about a Training program
I've been developing. At one of their events this past weekend their
CEO requested that I run a couple of these workshops for their staff.
Although it came as a surprise, for all the right reasons I said...
Yes. Which brings this email to you.

I know I'll need a video camera as that's part of the training
regimen. The main issue is $$. I really want to do the training but
the camera need couldn't have come at a worse time financially.
Nevertheless, what is, is. So I re-read your email, below and
consolidating all the suggestions I've read, I figured that I should
wait to buy a camera with an audio-in for an xternal mic. But, that
feature raises the camera price substantially as other features are
  added also or upgraded.

The training will take place in a conference room or office. One
person at a time. Camera on a tripod, maybe 10-15' away. I will
  record
the person speaking, then plug the camera into a handy computer,
theirs, watch it and comment, then move on. That's it, no iMovie
editing, no saving on the camera. So I need some advice if you could
  be so kind.

Under the described conditions, do you recommend an xternal mic or
would the built in mic suffice, and remember this is about speaking.
Does the video format matter if I'm simply recording to view on a
computer, mac or pc, not to edit?

As a result of this request, I've been frantically investigating
alternatives on the web. I went to ebay and found a VPC-HD 1000, USED
  up for bids.

Great story David. Thanks for sharing.

Ok, I'll lead by example as I normally do, here is my video blogging story:

Hi, I'm Dave Jones from Sydney Australia. I started a niche
electronics engineering video blog in April 2009.
 http://www.eevblog.com
 and
 http://www.youtube.com/user/EEVblog

I wanted to differentiate myself from boring text blogs, and figured
it would be fun to have a regular video blog about electronics. As far
as I could tell no one else had ever attempted one, so I gave it a go
with a crusty old 320x240 webcam in my study. No script, no idea, no
name, I just did a talking head blog and reviewed a few products. I
knew the result was crap, but I posted it on my personal Youtube
channel and announced on an electronics Usenet group anyway figuring
 you have to start somewhere.
I had some positive feedback and advice from the few dozen views I
got, like ditch the study and film it in my lab. I also asked for name
 suggestions.

The 2nd one was in the lab and was greeted with more positive feedback.
I switched from the webcam to my old Canon MV700i PAL DV tape
 camcorder with internal mic.

By the 3rd or 4th episode I had a basic Wordpress blog page with
embedded Youtube videos on my personal website. Still no script, no
idea, and no name. I could not come up with a better name, so it
remained the Electronics Engineering Video Blog, or EEVblog for short.
I would later figure out that name and branding can be quite important
to get right up front! I was kind of lucky in this respect, EEVblog
now works well for me as a brand.
I also switched to a dedicated Youtube channel.

It soon became clear that it was slowly gaining in popularity, and I
experimented with various audio and video settings.
I also realised that a lot of people were finding me via Youtube
searches, and it was important to have a dedicated topic for each
episode instead of the mixed bag of stuff I had in each blog. i.e.
people didn't want to sit through 5 minutes of other stuff to get to
the topic they found on the search. That was an important change I
 thought.

I soon got complaints that I didn't have my own domain name, so I got
eevblog.com and moved the Wordpress account over. At this point I had
a name, a brand, a slogan (An off-the-cuff video blog about
electronics..), and a silly photo people recognising the blog by.

I came to realise how important sound was to a blog, so a I bought a
cheap $50 2nd hand DV tape camcorder which had an external mic input
and got a $30 shotgun mic. This got rid of the tape noise and improved
the blog a lot, made it much more watchable.
I was still shooting in 640x480 and experimenting with widescreen. I
was using VideoStudio X2 edit software and was limited to the 10minute
Youtube limit. Many of my blogs were in two parts because of this.
Lots of heavy editing required to fit inside 10 minutes sometimes!

I was not advertising the blog in any way but it seemed to just keep
growing with people finding me by Google or Youtube searches.

Somewhere along the line I added some Adsense text ads and they
started to work like they had on my other web sites at the time.

I also added a user BBS style forum and that has really taken off.
Almost 1200 members, over 7000 posts and 600 topics. The EEVblog has
really turned into a quite a decent user community.

By Blog #42 I switched to a Sanyo Xacti HD-1010 camcorder and started
to shoot in HD as Youtube now supported HD content.
This blog was a turning point because it went semi-viral with 40,000
hits in a day or two via Boing Boing, and then Youtube emailed me an
offer to become a Partner. That took a month or so, and then I had ads
on my Youtube videos, and no more 10 minute limitation.

Editing HD was much slower than SD, but I persisted (and discussed
this on this group) and it is now working pretty well, I edit directly
on the 1280x720 MP4 files from the Xacti camera. I have since switched
to VideoStudio X3 edit software and render in 1280x720 MPEG2 which I
then convert to 1280x720 MP4 with Handbrake which is uploaded to
Youtube. Somewhere along the line I got the PodPress plugin for
Wordpress and started producing at first a 320x240 podcast version but
then switched to a 480x272 16:9 widescreen version.
I came to realise how important it was to get listed in iTunes and
have a podcast version and an RSS feed (via Google Feedburner). About
a 1/3rd of my audience now watch via the podcast version. The rest of
my audience are split about 50/50 between Youtube subscribers and my
 Wordpess blog.
I also do an MP3 version for my drive time blogs that many like to
listen to instead of watching the video.

I experimented with a live show and Ustream, and once I get over a few
technical hurdles, that might be a regular fixture too. I had at least
70 people tune in to my first live chat session, not

There is the ability in Final Cut to create slugs between beats. It does

That's what I use. Very handy so you can simply replace the slugs with video,

I've recreated the 1970 slide presentation into a 12 minute video using the
original narration visitors would have received. Most of the slides were shot
in the early '60s.

Now what? Should I add a minute to the start (or end) of the video explaining
what it is? Should I just add it in the notes? Do I put my Mike Moon 5 second
trailer at the end? Sorta wrap it in Mike Moon'ism?

Since then, Corby's Distillery has expanded into a huge company with offices
world wide.

Now what? Can I turn this into a financial opportunity? Who and how to
approach? I just hate to blow a chance at making money, if I can. :)

I thank you in advance with any suggestions you might have.

I'd use your existing accounts and create a new blog specifically for your new
interests.

I have my blip account that has 800+ videos with a small handful sent to other

I like everything going through one service, like blip, so I can monitor the
activity.

So perhaps a bizarre question. How many different video hosting accounts do

I have a couple of different accounts on Blip and Youtube and one on Vimeo,
but mostly all of my videos, (video blogging, bike rides, business research
tools, etc) go under two primary accounts. http://libraryvoice.blip.tv/ and
http://www.youtube.com/user/cfboeninger . As you can see, my two accounts
basically serve as a catch-all repository for all of my videos. I also have
another Blip account that just hosts family videos. My videos are posted on
 3-4 different blogs.

I have an idea for a new show format that I would like to do that would have
a more consistent theme than my potpouri of current videos. Is is worth
creating a new account for the show, or just upload the videos to my
existing accounts and embed them on a destination blog page? I just wonder
how many people stick to a show page on Blip or Youtube, or if they
watch/subscribe to the shows on the destination website page/blog. Any
thoughts on this? If you look at the help pages on Blip, what I have is
currently not a show per se, but a hodge podge of videos. I'm not looking
to quit my day job, but the idea of having an account tied to a specific
show does sound appealing. However, managing multiple accounts does create
some problems, as your content winds up being all over the place and hard to
keep up with what's where. I suppose I could just use my existing accounts
and point people to the destination website in the video description. Any
 advice from the pros?

 Thanks in advance,

Originally (2006) I produced videos 320x240 @15fps. I was more conscious 4

Since then I've settled in on 480x272 as my standard output rez (16:9).
If I have 4:3 video I'll normally output to 480x360.

I use vpip on my wordpress site to add the videos.
Over the years, I've since gone back, left the original video @ 320x240, but I
have it displayed on the site at 480x360. It looks no worse than some of the
stuff I see on YT.

While I have my pants down telling all my dirty secrets, I've shoot everything
over the past couple years in HD. I don't output in HD, just the original
content is in HD. That way, I have more options down the road.

HD on the web? Meh. My old iMac 1.8ghz which has just enough juice to

Actually if you use older camera technology and go above 320x240 then you are
at risk of running into interlacing issues. This isnt a problem if your
editing encoding software can deinterlace and you understand the issue, but
certainly when vloggers first started experimenting with 640x480 I saw no end
of stuff that looked worse than 320x240 because they hadnt deinterlaced so
there were bad comb artefacts when camera or people moved.

The vast majority of vlogs that I watch dont really lose anything by being
320x240. There are certain types of content that I love watching at higher
resolutions, but even with a pretty fast broadband connection I dont like to
wait long - many of the popular video hosts are not delivering content to me
at anything like the speed that my broadband can handle.

I do like video hosts that enable the viewer to switch between HD and non-HD
versions of the video very easily.

critical. I produce a 480x272 podcast version of my show for just such
reasons, but I'm not silly enough to film at that resolution or only

I'm not necessarily talking about HD here, as there is still has quite

Of course if it required an expensive converter of some sort I'd

Also, I am making the vid-pod in my studio using the iSight on the

[videoblogging] Re: Videogame commentary :: as :: Broadcast sports commentary

2010-01-11 Thread mgmoon
Hey Kevin,

I've created a couple/few commentaried video game videos over the years. The
videos I've created were geared towards friends and family to introduce them to
whatever game I might be playing.
Halo: http://mikemoon.net/vlog/2008/11/13/danger-canyon-run/
L4D2: http://mikemoon.net/vlog/2009/12/29/left-for-dead-too/
I have also created a video which included team conversations from Teamspeak
that help capture a moment in time that we can look/listen back and remember
our old comrades.

I sorta like Seananners overlay, but I find it kinda distracting too. I don't
need to see the narrators picture throughout the gameplay. Is the extra
information, as in kills and assists being calculated from within the game?
Data output?

Word is that the next round of nextgen games may include direct uploads to
Youtube from within the games.
I see a lot of music video style clips from gameplay too.

I'd love to see the ability to have multi-camera views being able to be video
captured. Just think how good the story could be told if FPS (First Person
Shooters) had access to overhead or 4th person angles. Many racing car games
replay the race in beautiful remapped 3D. It'd be great if FPS and other game
types also gave you the ability to watch the replay from multiple angles.

Yes, video games and vlogging do cross paths and I think once we see game
players embracing the video production tools, we'll see a Renaissance of video
game vlogs and the stories they tell.

 Hello,
Not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, but being in
the social realm of video, perhaps this might interest some of you.

Being a fan of play-by-play videogame commentary, I've noticed Youtube
user SeaNanners doing something pretty fascinating:

TITLE: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Gameplay Videos / Modern
Warfare 2: SeaNanners - 3rd Person Demolition: Nuke Without
 Killstreaks (MW2 Gameplay)
 SOURCE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHlUA022jOk

If you're a fan of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, what you see
on-screen are details you'd always want to know when watching someone
play a round. It's one of the more elaborate and clever ways of
showing highlighting key information outside of a player's HUD.

In the larger sense, I've been observing how videogames commentary
would mirror that of broadcast sporting events... complete with
on-screen templates showing scores and other vital statistics. While
such video game commentary tends to be taken more seriously in places
like South Korea and Germany, I'm intrigued to see America's take on
the adaptation from videogame participation (for a few players) to
spectatorship (for a mass of 'passive' viewers). There's room for
 creativity here.

Have any of you seen interesting video game commentary formats such as
 the one I showed above?

Perhaps more videogames should allow players to export their gameplay
 as Youtube videos.
(Halo 3 did have built-in video replayer of sorts... but doesn't
 output as video)

[videoblogging] Re: Nominate us for a Streamy

2010-01-05 Thread mgmoon
Thank you very much Rupert for the nod. It is very much appreciated.

Content, content, content. I miss the days of going to my favourite vloggers
only to find they've stopped posting videos. I've personally challenged myself
to keep the videos rolling.

@Rupert/Clintus Glad to see you have discovered 12sec videos. Even with 12
seconds, you are still capturing moments in time. Just think of the enjoyment
when your daughter (or son) is showing your grandchildren videos of when they
were kids. Magic moments saved for life.

I don't have an interesting life of world travel, but I continue to post vlogs
from my backyard and Cabana (750 vlogs since April'06). I've found the
videoblogging group as a great source for content ideas and challenges;
NaVloPoMo, Semanal and Drunk-Underwear-Karaoke. I urge everyone to just keep
shooting videos... you'll be the big winner in the end.

As Irina said, there are very few that can make money in this vlogging hobby.
I'm discovering that having years of video memories is worth more then any
financial compensation.

With that said, I'd love nothing more then an opportunity to get outta of the
backyard and head to LA. I could represent the voice of an average Joe Vlogger.
With a cheap camcorder and free processes (freevlog.org FTW), anyone can
capture their own video diary/scrapbook to keep and share forever.

I'm stealing Clintus' saying... Vlog on bitches.

Thank you Rupert.

Here we are, 13 days into NaVloPoMo (a video per day).
For those still posting videos - WAY TO GO!

If you haven't been able to keep up, I think you have a couple options.
1) Keep posting - 20 or so outta 30 ain't bad.
2) Why not follow along with NaBloPoMo's alternate plan and post comments each
day to those that are continuing to post a video per day. NaVloPoMo is like a
marathon, the longer we go, the tougher it gets. The NaVloPoMo runners can use
your moral support. Help cheer us along by leaving a comment. It really does
help.

The American composer, conductor, and pianist, Leonard Bernstein said, To
achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time.

It's that sentiment, and the idea that sometimes everyone needs a creative kick
in the ass that are the foundations of National Vlog Posting Month – an online

Of course, if you want to go ahead and do one video a day every day in

But in addition, I thought maybe instead of 30 people all trying to

Some of the best stuff that came out of the first Navlopomo in 2007

So... How about this? You choose a day in November - and on that day,

[videoblogging] Wordpress Assistance

I have a wee Wordpress challenge I'm trying to get my head around.

In Admin, under Reading I can tell WordPress how many posts I want to show on
the Front page. This option applies to all the pages... ie, search results, tag
lookups etc.
Originally I had it set to 10 posts per page. This works out great for all the
search results, but I only want _one_ article on the index page.

I did see there was a plugin to do this... but it was sorta shady, so I passed.
I'm thinking there must be a way to accomplish this.

It looks like the original CQS stopped working with WP 2.3 when WordPress

So, I haven't tried it, but the old CQS did *exactly* what we were after, no

[videoblogging] Re: Video Archives, the best way to show them?

2009-09-23 Thread mgmoon
Instead of thinking of one page to draw your followers to all of your videos,
what if the search through the archives could be done randomly or by chance?
Think of your site being a smaller version of YouTube. They come for one video,
but you offer several more to go along with it.

This is what I envision:
 ___ __
| |__|
| MIKE'S |__|
|___|__|
|__|__|__|__|__|
|__|__|__|__|__|
|__|__|__|__|__|
|__|__|__|__|__|

You have your featured video on your page.
1) Below it would be thumbnail links to related videos; other videos that share
the same tags or category as the featured entry.
2) Your page border to the right might have thumbnail links to your most
popular videos.
3) Perhaps above that you could have random selection from all your videos.
4) Perhaps there are thumbnail links to videos you did 2 or 3 years ago on this
date.

The good news is this could be closer then you think to being a reality. Now
this solution isn't going to work with the vlogger that has 10 videos, but for
those of us that have accumulated lots of content over the years, it should
work out well.

How could I even show that on a page? 400 and counting thumbnails? Would a

I think before any solution can be created we as vloggers have to answer
these questions first. Or am I just smoking crack?

I also had a tough time getting my head around this at first.
At Blip, Dashboard, Players.
Add a new player. Add whatever buttons etc. Save it.
Now go back to the list of players and you'll see the Embed at the bottom.
Click on embed, select Playlist, select your playlist and copy the embedded
code. Paste away in WordPress or where ever.

On the main page, I used the Video Sidebar Widget that works with Blip.tv
videos (plus a slew of others). Ideally, I'd like for there to be no buttons on
the bottom of the player for this one on the main page, but haven't got that
figured out yet.

Firstly, pause your video before taking the screen shot. If you try

Secondly, if you hold down the ALT key, and then hit the Print Screen

Hope it helps...

[videoblogging] Re: Freevlog 3

2006-04-17 Thread mgmoon
Good job Michael and Ryanne.
The previous site helped me get started into vlogging, while the new
site will start me thinking.
I found myself inspired by your first tutorial, nicely done.
Wow, posting a couple times a week? That's great.

Best of luck!

 Hey ya'll,

the main focus. There we'll posting a couple of times a week with new
tutorials, interviews and things to help people make kick-ass content.
Please go by and check it out. Feedback appreciated.
 Thanks,

I followed the very easy instructions at http://www.freevlog.org/ and
it took me less then 5 minutes to have an RSS feed.
Does it work? Well, that's hard to say so far, but it sure was easy.

[videoblogging] Ulead Video9 audio import prob

2006-04-13 Thread mgmoon
I've just started vlogging ... http://moon.blogspot.com/ and I
have a weird situation with Ulead Video9 audio import.
The program is cutting off the last second or so of the clip.
In Windows Media player the clip is 6 seconds long.
When i import it, or even preview it, it's truncated the last bit and
is only 4.8 seconds long.\
I've cleared out my temp directory, tried renaming the clip so nothing
is cached, but no go.
I had to redo my intro in MovieMaker to have all the audio play.
Any ideas?
(If you listen to the eerie chimes of my into, hear how it just cuts
off at the end?
I've made sure to upgrade to the latest version, but to no avail.

Thank you in advance,

Mike

[videoblogging] Re: another FAQ from a newbie

2006-04-13 Thread mgmoon
I picked up a very inexpensive ($80us) used Vivitar DVR-310 with a
1gig memory card. This Digital Video Recorder (DVR) stores the video
on SD memory cards. The unit is very small (fits in a shirt pocket)
and also has a built in 3mb camera and mp3 player.
It can tape video in 640x480 or 320x240 res.
It sucks in low lighting, but I'll make due.

I guess my point is, you can vlog for CHEAP.
Heck, you could get a webcam for $10 and vlog from your computer if
you wanted.

If I find that I really get into this vlogging, then I'll see about
upgrading my camcorder. For now... I'm happy.

I bought mine used, but I think you can get them new from the $120 mark.
Search for VIVITAR DVR-310 should get you a few places. I see some on
eBay, but those listed are in stores and seem more expensive then
dealing with an online retailer.

[videoblogging] Re: another FAQ from a newbie

2006-04-13 Thread mgmoon
I think it's a brilliant idea.
As you said, real world with a checklist.
Does it fit in a purse?
How's the battery life?
Is it easy to get your files from the device.
Can you easily control the camera when looking at it from the front?

Sounds quite handy for the new vlogger-wannabes who are undecided or a
place to find other people that own the same equipment as you.

Sounds like a good place...

This is most definitely a FAQ. I love reading the responses (and
now I'm
looking again at that Panasonic GS150), but I'm wondering if we
might also
collaboratively build a wiki page where we list what hardware we
use, how
we like it, pros, cons, etc. Not full-on reviews, but a simple
overview of
 real world use.

We could build out this page:

 http://www.voxmedia.org/wiki/Videoblogging_Hardware

Then create sub pages that are camera models (like the Panasonic
GS150) and
those of us that use it could add our thoughts and links for example
 output.

Just an idea. And if this has already been done (it sounds familiar!),
 please disregard!
