Re: Naval Combat iOS game app is free today
Hi Christopher, Thanks for the information on the accessibility of the Naval Combat Lite app. I caught this price drop on Naval Combat fairly late in the day; it was free at the time that I posted and for at least a few hours after. But I checked that it was already back to full price at the European app stores even at the time that I posted. And the reason for checking is that this app is posted under the German name of Seeschlacht in the Danish app store, which caused confusion when it was discussed at the beginning of the year. So I looked up the app in the Danish app store on my Mac before composing the AppleVis app deal alert, and noted that in the Danish store (and other European stores), the sale price was no longer available. I try to check that apps are really free at the point where you push the button to buy them before I post, so unless an app goes back to full price while I'm typing up my post, the announcements should be good, or I won't bother to post at all. And if you want sound effects you might try the free Where's my Rubber Ducky shooter game. I don't get most of these game apps, so I can only refer to the list discussions I've read. This app is reviewed on the AppleVis site, and here's the link: • Where's My Rubber Ducky by Accessibility Foundation (free): http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wheres-my-rubber-ducky/id515304336?mt=8 (You need to use headphones with this app and shoot at zombies. Disclaimer: I have no direct experience with this app). HTH. Cheers, Esther On Jul 4, 2012, at 5:40 PM, Christopher Chaltain wrote: I just went to download this app. Although it said it was free on the search results, when I double tapped it, it was still $0.99. I also saw that there was a Naval combat Lite, which just let's you play against the computer. This app is free and let's you upgrade to the paid version. It is totally accessible. I was kind of hoping for some sound effects though! :-) On 04/07/12 18:32, Esther wrote: Hi All, I just noticed that Naval Combat, an accessible, battleship-style game app for the iPhone that was discussed on the viphone list earlier this year, is free today. It usually lists for $0.99, and I read some information that the price is only for July 4, so it may be back to the regular price already for European app stores. It is still free for the U.S. App store. Here's the link to the AppleVis entry for the game, which can be played with others via the game center: http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/games/naval-combat Please note that the game is produced with both German and English localizations, and apparently in the Danish App Store the game shows up under the German name, Seeschlacht, so use the link I give below, or the one at the AppleVis site to locate the correct app. The actual game play is in English once you download the app from the Danish store, despite this confusion. Presumably the game play is in German for German app store purchasers. Here's the App Store URL: • Naval Combat by Jonas Eckhardt, Tobias Muehlbauer, Wolf Roediger GbR (free for July 4, 2012, normally $0.99) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/naval-combat/id408833350?mt=8 Note there is also a free Naval Combat Lite app, but it was last updated a year ago, and I don't think it is accessible with VoiceOver. Re: question
stephanie just move any apps you want by swiping your finger on each app to the left it will say pause for page change. and make a small noise when it changes. If you want them back on page 4 then keep doing this procedure until each app is there. remember when you move one then hit the home button so as not to deleet any apps, then repeat the above steps to get the apps where you want them. if you want to move an app up a page do the same procedure but swipe your finger to the right. Hello to our friends to the north. Most, of the apps and other topics are global. If you form a Canadian list that's fine. But, please do not leave this list? Dear Garth! Thank you very much for that audio demonstration! Finally I could do it! Have been trying for very long. Guess I was waiting for your audio demonstration. However your method seems to work just right selecting a few words or a sentence. When I try to select maybe 10 or 20 lines from an email I run into trouble. I tried selecting the lines from the Rotor. However it does not really well. Any tips for me? Thank you very much! Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?
What Richard says is 100% correct. We sell clothing labels (actually they can be washed in the dishwasher too, so you can also use them to make talking food containers as well). http://pages.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/item.fcgi?itemKey=1922500809store=%2Fstores%2Fdigiteyes You scan these with your phone and when it says 'record', you speak aloud whatever you want recorded about the item. When you scan the label a second time, you hear your recording. The recording is on the phone, so you can erase it and re-record as many times as you want. I have tupperware containers where I stuck a label on with hot melt glue and they have probably been through the dishwasher a 100 times. Each time, I record a different title spaghetti, left from July 3 2012 or whatever. If you want the paper audio labels, you can buy them from us and we will mail them to you: http://pages.digit-eyes.com/cgi-bin/item.fcgi?itemKey=1922500808store=%2Fstores%2Fdigiteyes Cordially Nancy Miracle On Wednesday, July 4, 2012 8:44:15 AM UTC-7, Sandra E. It is not necessary to have this app installed in order for the feature to work. Hi Raul Like you, Voxie was the first recorder I used, that is after the free voice recorder. I liked it a lot but found it very difficult to organize my many recordings. I'm curious, have you used List Recorder? Once I started using that I never looked back. It is completely voice over friendly designed for the visually impaired from the ground up and the organizational capabilities and recording options are extensive. It even has extensive note taking capability. As a professional working in a fast paced job I'd be lost without it! Another thing I can do is send text messages out which also originate from my Google Voice number. So, using the native messages app, or my favorite one Bite SMS, I can text just like everyo0ne else and it's all through Google Voice number. This means that I can hide my real cell phone number. I said one reason, but I thought of another. Themes. I love that I can theme my phone. In fact, just to throw people off, lately I've had the Windows XP theme on my iPhone. It makes the home screen look like a windows xp desktop, and it plays the xp logon sound when I unlock and the log off sound when I lock the phone. On the screen instead of slide to unlock, it shows slide to log in. I have many more tweaks, but themes and Google Voice are my 2 main reasons. -- Raul A. Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies
Hi, I have only used List Recorder free version and that was back when it first came out. Since Voxie Pro has been meeting my recording needs I admit that I haven't looked at others very seriously. I understand the Voice Over compatibility in List Recorder, but quite honestly Voxie is very Voice Over friendly as well. It also has recording categories so you can organize them into whatever you want. Like all apps, there are a few things about Voxie I don't like, but the express recording and the recording quality and the settings and built-in web server so you can download your recordings without iTunes is a huge plus for me. I'm not against giving List Recorder another go, but since Voxie Pro was $2.99 for me and has met my needs I haven't been really much interested in paying more for something which might do the same. -- Raul A. Moderator's gentle reminder about subject lines
Hiya all. For those of you in the U.S. I hope you had a great 4th of July celebrating the country's birthday. For those outside of the U.S. who might also celebrate it, I hope it was good as well. For those who don't celebrate the US. birthday, I still hope you had a great day. Yesterday we spent it getting a swimming pool for the family. I think the maintenance is going to cost more than the pool. Oh, now onto the reason for this post? See? I wrote about subject lines and I'm not even talking about subject lines. I'm sure it can be quite annoying to some when you open a message with topic X and it discusses Y. So, the reason I'm posting this is to remind people to make your subject lines meaningful to the message. For example I recently saw a couple of threads called question and hi. Those are generic threads. I mean, isn't the list to ask questions? So, by that definition, should all subjects be question? Oh no, here goes my sarcasm again. In any case, since there are over 1300 members on the list, and since many members are subscribed to many other lists, it's highly important to make your subject lines descriptive. This way, members who browse by subject only can answer your question if it's clear what you are writing about. When I don't moderate a list, I usually skip the help or question subject topics and realize of course that I might have missed a chance to answer something, or missed out on some great information. To those of you who still answer questions even if the subject is vague or generic, my hat's off to you. That takes extra time. So, all I'm asking is that you stop and think before you send. Sometimes what I do is write my message first and then go and fill in the subject. I find that after writing my problem or question down, it's most fresh in my mind and then I can come up with a better subject line. This way it's not so generic. And it doesn't even have to be a long subject. Good examples are help with Voxie pro or what is a good grilling app or moving apps across the screen or creating folders. Thanks, and everyone, please enjoy the 5th of July. -- Raul A. Gallegos - VIPhone Moderator The best job I ever had was at a bank, I was bringing home $5,000 a month... but then they caught me. Re: Moderator's gentle reminder about subject lines
Raul, I have to admit that I am more likely to delete messages and entire threads with subject lines such as question etc. The reason is because there is sufficient traffic on the list and plowing through a large volume of messages will be much more efficient with meaningful subject lines. Also, with a clear subject line you are more likely to attract readers and perhaps get answers more quickly or information to the readers more quickly. Thank you all who provide helpful subject lines and thanks Raul for bringing this topic up. I think these tips help to make the list a much more efficient forum for all. Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies
Hi Raul I suspected from your comments that you were not familiar with the current full version of List Recorder. And, if the apps you have are meeting your needs there is no reason to upgrade them. For example if Red laser baar code free reader meets your needs why bother with Digit-Eyes or the Looktell Recognizer. If the free ibill app reads money for you why bother with a $9.99 app like Looktell Money reader. On the other hand sometimes using apps specifically designed to work with Voice Over and the visually impaired population provide excellent quality for the few extra dollars. It is interesting how some features in a app make it work better for one person and make it more challenging for another. I found it confusing to use the FTP method of Voxie to transfer recordings. were in List Recorder I some times use Dropbox, sometimes use email, and sometimes iTunes file share. It depends on if I'm transferring one recording, many recordings, or backing up the entire contents of List Recorder. Voxie served me well for a few months and is a great value. Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies
Heyya Eric: I will be beginning some classes on Monday will need an application for recording those said classes. I asked this question the other day on a list somewhere. I'm subscribed to so many these days. How long may the recordings in list recorder be? If between classes can I upload them/ transfer them to drop box, somewhere else start again? Thanks so much in advance for any help or answers you're able to give me. Looks like I need to spend some time listening to the afore mentioned podcasts. - Original Message - From: Eric Caron ecar...@comcast.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2012 15:15 Subject: Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies Hi Raul I suspected from your comments that you were not familiar with the current full version of List Recorder. Excuse!! App Name Given + Company
Hello List, I hope this email will not block me from this list. This will be the last time I will post any free apps. I have given the name and the company that produced this app correctly. If you are just darn lazy to look it up in the app store, then there is nothing else to say. I thought I was doing a good deed by giving those that are interested a heads up on the apps that have been discussed here and that others may want to download that are free or are little cost. The app that has been most helpful for me to review apps on a daily basis is Store News, so just put this in the search field on the app store on the phone and it will be listed for one to add to their apps to review the free or low cost app on their own. I value this list and have grown substantially, but I will respond to those who I can offer my assistance personally to their emails because there is a tremendous amount of traffic on this list to be caught up with this nonsense. Thanks for listening and I hope one will take my advice and add the Store News app to their phone and take the time to review it on their own. Re: DigitEyes or another bar code reader?
Sandy, I demonstrated digit-eyes for a workshop at the Canadian hellen keller centre a couple of weeks ago and I have to say, it was pretty chronic. It found all the products we swiped although we couldn't get extended information for anything we identified. That may be to do with the package we bought. I didn't handle that so I don't know which one it is. We were using IPad 3 on a stand. We had to be careful about positioning. The lighting in the room was such that it caused glare in the camera lens and thus failure to recognize the image of the code. I've been seriously impressed with the support and development that's gone on in the last 4 or 5 months. There are now two hand-held barcode reader extensions tested for use with digit-eyes. The CHKC bought the kdc300 or whatever it is, I always get those letters at the beginning messed up. Anyhow, that is a rocking little unit for anyone who can't use the camera for various reasons. I have red laser on my droid and my ITouch and it's OK. It's free which is nice. the interface is mostly accessible. It's fast enough at looking up codes. Unfortunately it's not very good at identifying barcodes for products outside the US and since most of the world population including myself doesn't actually live in the US, that's a bit of a liability. If we get a port of digit-eyes for android, I'd buy it the day it comes out. I think it's a very exciting product. I haven't any tips at this stage, I must confess that I haven't tried to select that much in one go before. I will play around with it though and see if I come across anything that could help. Re: Voxie or List Recorder - Was using iPhone for studies
hi Sean Paul In List Recorder there is no limit to the recording length. Only your device memory will limit the recording time. YOu could certainly send the recording to dropbox or email it between classes. List recorder lets you easily organize your recordings so it might be easier to make a new recording for each class you have in a day then transfer them as you need later on. You could create for example a list for Psychology and place all your recordings in that list. Then make another list for your Biology class and keep those recording ings in that list. You can also easily move recordings around within List Recorder so you can update and change how you organize things. Hope this info helps. Re: Excuse!! App Name Given + Company
Eileen, I hope you will keep posting these notices to the list. I find them very useful. I tend to agree with you though that people should become comfortable using searches to get more information. The issue may be compounded in the App Store since there are so many apps and so many have similar names, but someone could take a look first, and if it's that confusing, they could ask for some more clarification. For my part, I'll post a link or more information if I have it handy, but if not, I assume anyone else can use the search tab in the App Store or Google just the same as I can. Interestingly enough, this same issue came up on another list where someone got indignant because someone answered a question and mentioned an application without providing a link. I pretty much repeated what I said above, which is if I have the name of the application and the link I'll post it, but if I have to go to Google myself then the person who wants to know where to get the application or what it does then they can use Google just as easily as I can. IMHO, none of us are paid to participate on these lists, and I appreciate any information I can get. I also worry that if the standard operating procedure becomes only post a message if you can provide a link and a description of the app then people will just stop posting useful tid bits of information. Not because they don't want to but just because everyone is busy, so they'll wait until they have time to collect more info, and then it'll be too late. Re: Jail breaking
Greetings from Chicago. I have never owned a cell phone before and really learned the benefit of one when I was in a suburb and asked folks for directions a few times. no one could answer my questions directly. they all turned to their smart phones! I realized I could have the same thing in my hand that was fully accessible. I learned about the Straight Talk service and discovered that iPhone service is now more affordable than high speed Internet access was when I first subscribed more than 10 years ago. to use Straight Talk or most of the other prepaid services, it is necesssary to unlock the phone. Unlocking usually requires jail breaking, I understand. Even if it doesn't I would eventually jailbreak anyway for the added flexability. A friend told me that unlocked and jail broken phones are unstable with Voice Over. He said the places where one gestures or taps to initiate actions can move or change. These shifting locations he said can make it difficult for a blind person to use an unlocked phone. For this reason, he urges blind people to use contract service only. has anyone else experienced this with unlocked or jailbroken phones? Is voice Over less responsive and precise in unlocked or jail broken configurations than an out of the box phone from a contract provider? I appreciate all the contributions people have made in the few days I have been on the list. I have learned so much already. I can't wait to get started on this adventure in independence. Re: Weather alerts on your phone
Anything delivered over the network may be subject to a delay. I used Imap radio in the past and it also was subject to delays as well. In fact I happen to have the radio on and received over-the-air notifications more quickly than from Imap radio. This is not a negative to the value the app has, but simply pointing out that text or otherwise may be subject to delays as well. Re: Jail breaking
Hi, That is correct, although there is currently no unofficial unlock for the 4S, so jailbreaking won't help. I'll also echo what Raul has already said about your friend; there simply is no way that he is talking from experience because that just doesn't happen. In contrast, everyone? contributing in this topic has at some point jailbroken their device, so in theory, the information offered will be much more accurate. My accessibility experiences concerning jailbreaking have infact all been positive. Up until around 1.5 years ago, Cydia, the jailbroken app store was completely inaccessible. A couple of us emailed the developer and it was made completely accessible in the next version. An app that some of us use called voice activator used to crash when vo was turned on. Once I found this out, I emailed the developer and from memory a fixed version was released the next day. Cheers, Ben. RE: Jail breaking
Hi Kelly, I've found 1 JB app that has issues with scrolling but I've also seen a few apps from the Appstore with bad accessibility implementation. So the short answer is, no problem with VO, Cydia etc. I find the JB community pretty VO-aware. You either ran into someone who is a bit of a nervous nelly or who is misinformed or who has overreacted to one bad experience or perhaps there was a hardware problem. App conflicts can happen, some sighted folks have had a recent conflict between Anavo Extend and some other apps, can't remember the particular situation right off. So Jailbreak away, and restore if you don't see any benefits. Re: Moderator's gentle reminder about subject lines
A gentle reminder from a gentlemen. Sent from my Verizon iPhone! On Jul 5, 2012, at 2:37 PM, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hiya all. SpeedDots Otter Box Defender Question
Hi all, I got my new Otter Box case along with a SpeedDots overlay and was quite perplexed. There didn't seem to be any logic to where the dots were. Then, after conferring with a friend who has a similar setup, the answer became clear: the Apple Store genius who had put on the SpeedDots overlay had put it on upside down. Is this something I can redo, or do I pretty much need to buy another one at this point? Thanks for any suggestions. Re: Dish receivers 922, 722 and hopper/joey and streaming with i devices
I used to have a 922 and a 612. I was very disappointed to see the watch on tv feature disappear with the hopper. Sure wish we could get them to put it back. If I had known that the watch on tv feature was not available on the hopper, I probably wouldn't have switched. Sent from my iPhone On Jul 3, 2012, at 7:59 AM, Rick Alfaro rick.alf...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. I currently have the Hopper along with 2 Joeys. I also have a SlingBox adapter plugged into one of the USB ports on the Hopper. You can get the adapter for $30 from Dish. My experience with streaming has been ok for the most part. If you get the free Dish app for your iDevice, you can stream stuff on your DVR or watch live TV. Unfortunately, the part of the app that actually displays the video on your device has a bunch of unlabeled buttons so you really have to poke around to figure some of them out. The one big issue I have with this is that if you have a Hopper, the “watch on TV” option is no longer available. This option allows you to find something in the program guide and when you click on watch you can choose to watch it on your tv and not stream so it’s sort of like an accessible remote control allowing you to have it change the channel on your DVR to watch real time. This feature is there if you own a 722k or 922. Not sure why they decided to not make it available with the Hopper. I have spoken to them and also emailed them with no real responses so not sure if it will ever be added back again for the Hoppers. The Hopper has 3 tuners but it has the Prime Time Any Time feature. This feature when enabled, uses 1 tuner and automatically records all 4 major networks between 7pm and 11pm. It’s a fantastic feature. The DVR itself of course isn’t accessible but you do have the ability to view the program guide through the app where you can schedule recordings along with the ability to stream previous recordings. Again, it’s stream only which isn’t the case with the 722 and 922, or so owners of those boxes have told me. Hope this helps somewhat. Feel free to contact me off list if you have any more questions or we can do Skype as well if you want. I recall reading on here that some other dish users had issues with the Hopper receivers and streaming to their iPhones/iPads. I currently have two dvrs for four tbs and my understanding is that with the Hopper, you can have up to six tvs hooked up where as with the other 922 and 722 boxes, it’s only two tv connections with only the 922 receiver having slingbox capabilities. Can anyone speak as to the accessibility with any of these receivers and streaming to an iPad or iPhone or exicuting any of the dvr recording features online and so on? I don’t have an Apple TV, but will most likely be getting one later in the year. I would be upgrading from a couple of 625 receivers one of which is mine. I was thinking about buying a netgear usb adaptor to insert into the receiver that I own to catch my wireless router, but I’ve read conflicting reports online that this particular dvr device is not Internet capable outside of being hooked up directly to a landline which I do not have. I would appreciate any feedback or observations on any of the above. If I do decide to upgrade and sign on for two more years, I’d like to get the right receiver.
