Re: GPS Apps Stand-A-Lone GPS Units

2012-08-10 Thread Pete Nalda
Ok, this is coming from a partial, but car routes are so fun. I use
mapquest4mobile in car mode to impress my iphone owning sighted friends, and
know where I am with all the signs I can't read. I think it also be useful to
totals, as if needed for helping their sighted drivers, as said here.

On Aug 9, 2012, at 10:12 PM, Christopher Chaltain wrote:

I'm not sure car routes aren't important to us. My sighted wife does all
of the driving, and she used to, and probably still does, use a GPS
device. Since I started using MapQuest though, she prefers to let me do
the navigating while she's doing the driving. I think there's a lot less
tension in the car now since we started doing this!

Also, if I'm asking someone for a ride, I don't expect them to always
know where i need to go. Unless they're going there as well, I think
it's my responsibility to know where I need to go, the address of where
I'm going and the directions on how to get there.

you're not driving, and have a sighted person doing that part, and they can
 read the signs. LOL!

 Eileen,

I am so glad you brought that up. Ever since my very first Trekker about 5
years ago, I have been saying that a GPS is a good mobility tool and nothing
else. As well as helping you, it can also get you killed if you pay more
attention to it than to your orientation and mobility. You must never pay
so much attention to the device that you forget to pay attention to what you
are doing. If I am about to cross a street and the GPS talks while I am
reading my traffic, I ignore it and make my crossing as I have been trained
to do and just stop and press the repeat button on the other side. It also
seems to me like too many people think that the GPS will go and place your
hand on the door knob. I am lucky to get within 10 metres of a target and
use my dog's and my ability to do the rest.

Subject: GPS Apps Stand-A-Lone GPS Units

 Hi,

I have been following this thread and I am concern that individuals are
relying too much on GPS apps or stand-a-lone GPS units. We must remember
that GPS is only a tool and it doesn't replace our orientation and mobility
skills. It's to give us information and the information is only as good as
the databases that the GPS apps or separate units have access to. This past
weekend I was up in San Francisco and all three GPS products were having
issues in giving precise information. At one point, all of them stated to
turn left where there was a No Left Turn sign (car route mode). I
understand that the choices we make regarding which GPS apps one will use is
a personal matter, and individual GPS apps should not be knocked. This can
give a misconception to those who haven't purchased a GPS app for their
phone. As one of the other posts stated, it will all change when the iPhone5
will be available regarding the purchasing of GPS apps. I just hope that
Apple gets it right the first time. Now!! I will probably be cut down for
this, but it is the Sendero GPS on my Apex that I eventually turn on to get
more precise information and options that are not available on my GPS apps
on the phone. At least I have lots of options to get the info that I need
when I am out-and-about. However, these options do not replace my ability to
 travel with the white cane.

 Thanks for listening.

Totally agree.
The addition of direct touch was very welcome. The lack of it confused me when
the app as was released. I guess they couldn't wait for all features before
getting the app out. Also, I worked out an issue I was having with the app. It
seemed to me that voice over would do silent and the app would stop working..
The problem was my phones case, it was hanging to close to the sensor.

Absolutely love the app now.

If you run some sort of Malware removal tool such as malwareBytes (you can
download and install it on the Ninite site,) the calls will stop in a matter
of a day or two.
They've gotten your info from your computer.
Giving the number out while nice is not helpful, as there are several
variations of this number. This was also published in an article from
Microsoft as well as some other techy related sites, notifying folks about
this very scam.
But the important piece of all, is that you have malware.
My partner was getting similar calls, sometimes three and four times a day.
He ran anti-malware tools on his computer, and they stopped calling. I've
spoken personally with similar individuals who have reported the same
scenarios with similar results after removing the Malware.

Hi,

What a wonderful job. All you need now is to sell it to Apple so they can
integrate it in the new IOS. After all, that’s what they did with SIRI.

I would like to see an ‘t in the suggestions as well as the ‘s for words

Subject: Fleksy is now free to try

Hello all

A major update of Fleksy hit the App Store today, featuring the most
important of our users':

§ Fleksy is now free to try. The free version will not allow you to copy or
use the text, but will give everyone the ability to try out Fleksy before
purchasing the full version. If you have already purchased the full version
previously, you will automatically be upgraded to the full version.

§ You no longer have to switch VoiceOver off to type. Please note, you have
to first tap once anywhere on the screen before typing, in order to activate
the keyboard. This is the way Direct Touch works.

§ When you launch Fleksy, it is now already in typing mode. You can use the
keyboard area to type. To bring up the Fleksy menu, press and hold at the
top of the screen, above the keyboard area.

§ We have re-ordered the app menus based on popular feedback.

§ You can now remove words from the dictionary. You remove words the same
way you add them: type them in manual entry mode, and then, after swiping
right, swipe up to remove from the dictionary.

§ The previous version of Fleksy prevented you from adding certain words in
the dictionary – this has now been fixed.

§ There is now an easy way to add apostrophes to nouns. After writing a
word, swipe right for period and you will find the (apostrophe s) shortcut
in the suggestions.

§ We have reorganized how Fleksy formats emails. The word “Fleksy” is not
added to the subject line any more. We have also included an option for
using the first line of your text as the subject of outgoing e-mails. We
know that a lot of participants of this forum had asked for this feature.

§ Fleksy now supports the Screen Curtain feature when enabled.

§ Fleksy now speaks in the same language locale as your iPhone if you use
the UK or Australian English voice.

§ Your user dictionary is now stored in iCloud on enabled devices. This
means it will automatically be updated across your devices and stay in sync.

§ The instructions are now stored within Fleksy, so you can access them
when you are offline or outside a network cover area.

§ There is now a “spell words” setting. This spells the last word entered
after you have typed it.

§ We have updated the Twitter button to point to our new Twitter handle:
@fleksy.

§ We have added the underscore to the list of symbols.

§ And, finally, Fleksy now notifies you it is ready when loading is
completed.

The update is free for all Fleksy users, and all previous purchasers are
automatically upgraded to the full version.

For everyone else, Fleksy is now free to download and try. You need to
purchase the full version if you want to use the text you type.

More information is at
http://fleksy.com/2012/08/09/fleksy-major-update-now-free-to-try/

To downloaded, visit our http://fleksy.com/app App Store page.

And as always, we welcome all feedback to feedb...@fleksy.com

Thanks,

Ioannis

RE: The new Fleksy.

2012-08-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chuck,

I assume you typed your message using Fleksy since your subject line is also
duplicated as the first line of your message. In the new version you can
turn this off in the settings. There is a heading called Email and the
first item after that is Include subject in body, it's a simple toggle, if
it's on double tap it and it changes to off and vice versa. I personally
like it set to off because I don't see a point in repeating my subject line
in the message body, it's not as if this is something I do if I write an
email in Outlook or that it is a standard practice.

The second item under email is the Signature, edit field and here of
course you can delete the default Typed with Fleksy signature if you wish,
replace it with a different one or leave it blank so you only get the
signature you set in your mail settings.

Regards,
Sieghard

  Hi all,

I just got a call from someone who said he was in Jackson, California. He
said he is from the Windows technical team, and he called me because I am the
windows registered user. He said there is an Internet protocol that sends the
information to them. I was told there are lots of viruses on my computer that
need to be deleted as soon as possible, and that my computer was sending out
lots of error reports. He said they wanted no personal information from my
computer, and that the work would be done free of charge because the company
wants to help. .

I called back and got another person. They both had foreign accents.

Here is the telephone number in case any of you get the call. (209) 257-3232.

  GOD BLESS,

For the high speed scrubbing, have you tried using the slider controls
for the amount of time elapsed and time remaining in a chapter, or the
time elapsed in the whole book/part? Just a thought.

 error.

I hope the fix for the Audio not available error is really fixed, it didn't
happen a lot to me and mostly getting out of the app, taking it out of the
app switcher and getting back in fixed the problem, but it would be nice if
I don't have to do this any more. I guess it's time for another email and
phone call to them asking them to fix Voiceover so that deleting titles
works better and I'd also like to see better accessibility of the high
 speed
scrubbing. I like the way it's done in the music app where a flick up or
down if you are on the Playback Position control advances or goes back by
approx. 10% of the length of the currently playing title, e.g. if your
current chapter is 1 hour long a flick would jump forward or backward by
approx. 6 minutes. It's very easy to find a particular place this way and
then by using the 30 second jump option..Progress .

 Happy listening,

 Sieghard

Hi Ioannis

Loving the new Fleksy update so far. This app just gets more user friendly
everyday! I think your approach regarding allowing people to try the app for
free but not be able to use text they have typed is a really good idea.

I am impressed how you have managed to incorporate pretty much all the
feedback I have seen so far regarding suggestions for improvements and can’t
wait to see what other updates will come out in the coming months.

interested to know which gesture you use because none I have tried and which
works in any other application like the music app, Downcast etc. works.
Audible did add a Playback Position control, but all you can do is flick up
or down and jump by 30 second increments which in the case of jumping back
is the same as using the Jump Back button. If you are not an Audible app
user, please reply to me directly, I don't think there have to be further
messages cluttering the list unless they provide information everybody can
use.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Fleksy is now free to try

2012-08-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

You delete by swiping left. If you are typing the slow way, i.e. by touching
and holding the screen until you hear the letter spoken, swiping left will
erase each letter you typed this way one at a time. If you are typing the
fast way by touching approximately where you think the letter should be and
by doing the pattern, then a swipe left will undo what you typed since the
last word, e.g. if you want to type Hello Peter and you typed Hello
correctly and it read it back and then you realize you started out wrong for
peter, you swipe left once and there is a little swish sound which means
you can start over. If you typed Peter and it doesn't come up and is not in
the list of suggestions, just do a swipe left after you reach the end of the
suggestions and, if for example the last word in the suggestions was other
Fleksy would make the swish sound and say deleted other. Now you can give
it another try.

As for capitalization, you have to find the letter you want to capitalize
the slow way, then once Voiceover announces the letter lift your finger
and do a 1-finger swipe up from the bottom towards the top, sometimes and I
think it's mostly if you have typed nothing else yet, Voiceover just repeats
the letter and you have to swipe up a second time before it will capitalize
it. You said in your message I have tried moving my finger up on the
screen so I believe you may slide your finger up after you find the letter
without lifting it first, you have to do a definite swipe or flick up not a
slow slide.

I just tried this by typing iPhone the slow way, I find the I then lift
my finger, then I find the p, lift my finger and then a single swipe up
will say capital p. If, however, I type the word Phone as my first word
and do it the slow way, I have to swipe up twice after I find the p
because the first time I swipe up it just says p and the second time it
says capital p.

If you hear what you just typed, i.e. if the text is read back to you, you
are touching too high because this reading back of what you typed is
triggered by covering up the proximity sensor and it is right at the very
top and just to the left of the slot in the glass where your earpiece Is. If
you do want Fleksy to read back what you typed you can either raise the
phone to your ear or you can just hover your hand or palm over the top of
the phone, you don't have to actually touch the screen to trigger this.

As for activating the menu once you are done typing, try and touch the
screen at the level of where the volume up and down buttons are. In fact,
you could put a finger over top of them so you feel both the volume up and
down, then lift that finger move right just a bit (you don't have to be in
the middle of the screen) and plop it down on the screen just to the right
of where the volume buttons are, hold for half a second or so and you should
hear the dong followed immediately by Voiceover saying Alert followed by
the text you typed, as soon as you hear the dong you can lift your finger
off the screen, if it is a long message you can touch the screen once with 2
fingers to stop Voiceover from continueing to read. Now you can swipe right
and find the option you want, Copy and Clear, email, message etc. If you
want to continue and add more text, double tap on the Cancel button just
above the Home Key, it is the last option in the menu, but quickly found by
putting your finger on the Home Key and sliding up just a bit.

Good luck,

Sieghard

I find the best way to capitalize a letter is to find the letter, lift your
finger and them swipe down. It will announce the letter as capitalized..

To get to the send menu's simply tap end hold about one inch from the top of

Contractions like can't, don't, won't, etc. Are automatically typed with the
apostrophe..

Hope this helps,.

Hi.
Download the Dropbox app on your iPad, which you can find by searching
for Dropbox in the App Store. Then, log in to your account once
installed and you'll have all your files on your iPad that you do on
your Windows machine in Dropbox.
If you only want some stuff in both places, consider creating a
separate Dropbox account for your iPad. you'll need to use a different
email though. Then, just share a folder specifically between your PC
and Dropbox. However, remember that the actual files in your Dropbox
folders do not take up space on your iPad.

 Hi,

I have been following this thread and I am concern that individuals

remember that GPS is only a tool and it doesn't replace our
orientation and mobility skills. It's to give us information and the
information is only as good as the databases that the GPS apps or

precise information. At one point, all of them stated to turn left
where there was a No Left Turn sign (car route mode). I understand
that the choices we make regarding which GPS apps one will use is a
personal matter, and individual GPS apps should not be knocked. This
can give a misconception to those who haven't purchased a GPS app for
their phone. As one of the other posts stated, it will all change when
the iPhone5 will be available regarding the purchasing of GPS apps. I
just hope that Apple gets it right the first time. Now!! I will
probably be cut down for this, but it is the Sendero GPS on my Apex
that I eventually turn on to get more precise information and options

lots of options to get the info that I need when I am out-and-about.
However, these options do not replace my ability to travel with the white

Re: GPS Apps Stand-A-Lone GPS Units

2012-08-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. How would you use what?
Which application or device are you asking about?

When I'm in a car, I go to my MapQuest app, which I downloaded from the
App Store. I think it's listed as MapQuest by AoL in the App Store. I
found it easily enough by just searching on MapQuest. It doesn't
download any maps, so you'll need to be leveraging you're data plan if
you're in your car.

I don't use it enough to tell you exactly how to use it off the top of
my head, but basically you tell it to use your current location as the
starting point and then you enter your destination, either by address or
business name. I think you click the start button or maybe it's labeled
start navigation and then you'll hear the turn by turn directions
announced. You can move MapQuest to the background and still hear the
directions. By default, it'll assume you're driving, but if your
destination is close enough, it'll ask you if you want walking
directions instead.

There are a lot of other GPS options besides MapQuest, but this is the
app I've decided I like for now.

Also, if I'm asking someone for a ride, I don't expect them to always

it's my responsibility to know where I need to go, the address of where
I'm going and the directions on how to get there.

RE: Fleksy is now free to try

2012-08-10 Thread Regina Alvarado
You know? I was thinking the same. There should be a simple clear button
and the copy/clear. However, for now, you can erase your practice by just
running your finger to the left and not picking it up. Eventually you will
erase what you have written. BTW, it makes a sound as if you were rewinding
an audible file or a tape, (now gosh what is a tape I hear from the younger
folks).

It would be nice if there could be a clear button added to the choices
of options in the menu. I know there is a copy and clear button, but
what if I am practicing and just want to clear what I have written? I
could have used this option earlier today when practicing in the
updated app. I know that there may be a concern of having too many
options there, but if you do it right, or even offer a button leading
to a submenu of choices, the options could be easily managed. I really
like the addition of apostraphey S in the list of items under the
period. Very handy.

Re: Fleksy is now free to try

2012-08-10 Thread jeremy
I completely agree. It's not so bad if you've only got a few words,
slide left and hold to mass delete words but if you've got a decent
amount of text, this would be nice. I mentioned this to the gf, sense
she's the one that purchased fleksy for me and she said I was being to
picky and complaining. LOL
All the same though, her and I are both super happy with the update for
sure.
Only thing that would make it even better would be if we could have it
implemented into an actual keyboard you could use for all edit boxes,
but, unless apple decides to start allowing keyboards in the appstore,
it's a no go, I figure.

Take care.

I am so glad you brought that up. Ever since my very first Trekker
about 5 years ago, I have been saying that a GPS is a good mobility
tool and nothing else. As well as helping you, it can also get you
killed if you pay more attention to it than to your orientation and
mobility. You must never pay so much attention to the device that you
forget to pay attention to what you are doing. If I am about to cross
a street and the GPS talks while I am reading my traffic, I ignore it
and make my crossing as I have been trained to do and just stop and
press the repeat button on the other side. It also seems to me like
too many people think that the GPS will go and place your hand on the
door knob. I am lucky to get within 10 metres of a target and use my

 Hi,

I have been following this thread and I am concern that individuals
are relying too much on GPS apps or stand-a-lone GPS units. We must
remember that GPS is only a tool and it doesn't replace our
orientation and mobility skills. It's to give us information and the
information is only as good as the databases that the GPS apps or
separate units have access to. This past weekend I was up in San
Francisco and all three GPS products were having issues in giving
precise information.
Now!! I will
probably be cut down for this, but it is the Sendero GPS on my Apex
that I eventually turn on to get more precise information and options
that are not available on my GPS apps on the phone. At least I have
lots of options to get the info that I need when I am out-and-about.
However, these options do not replace my ability to travel with the white
cane.

 Thanks for listening.

Hi,
Unless I'm mistaken, there's no select all function in mail messages list.
To emulate this, you'd tap edit button, then select individual emails

volume of certain apps question.

2012-08-10 Thread Chris Judd

Hey all,

I was wondering, is there a setting in the iPhone, where I can adjust the
volume of certain apps?
There are times, where I have to turn up the volume in skype for example,
and I have to use the volume controls, and the people that I am talking to,
can hear me pushing the knobs up, and down.

Let me know if this can be accomplished.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: The new Fleksy.

2012-08-10 Thread Chuck Dean
There is a trial version of Fleksy that is free.
It allows you to try the key board to see if it will work for you. But
anything you type cannot be saved, copied ,or emailed.
So the free version is only good for evaluation.
To actually use Fleksy, you will need to buy the app.

I'm not sure car routes aren't important to us. My sighted wife does all of
the driving, and she used to, and probably still does, use a GPS device.
Since I started using MapQuest though, she prefers to let me do the
navigating while she's doing the driving. I think there's a lot less tension
in the car now since we started doing this!

Also, if I'm asking someone for a ride, I don't expect them to always know
where i need to go. Unless they're going there as well, I think it's my
responsibility to know where I need to go, the address of where I'm going
and the directions on how to get there.

killed if you pay more attention to it than to your orientation and
mobility. You must never pay so much attention to the device that you
forget to pay attention to what you are doing. If I am about to cross
a street and the GPS talks while I am reading my traffic, I ignore it
and make my crossing as I have been trained to do and just stop and

Now!! I will
probably be cut down for this, but it is the Sendero GPS on my Apex
that I eventually turn on to get more precise information and options
that are not available on my GPS apps on the phone. At least I have
lots of options to get the info that I need when I am out-and-about.
However, these options do not replace my ability to travel with the white
cane.

 Thanks for listening.

 Eileen

I'm just curious, are there any other mailing lists out there for blind
users of the iPhone? I guess I'm looking for something with a bit less
traffic and something that's a bit more on topic. I don't own, and I'm
not interested in, any stand alone GPS devices or any other Apple
products. I also have plenty of other sources to hear and be warned
about different scams. I don't begrudge people talking about whatever
they want to on this list, it isn't my list after all, I'm just
wondering if there's anything out there that might be a more efficient
use of my time. This is a great list, with a lot of smart people on it
who provide tons of great information and a pair of really great
moderators. The iPhone traffic alone though makes it a pretty high
traffic list.

I'm not sure about the last part of your question, but to use it in a car
you'd:
1. Type in the destination you're riding to in the search field, which
then brings up a go button. Tap that, and at the top of the screen, in
the middle is where you select voice navigation.

2. Listen to to the directions as you're driving
3. Upon arriving at your destination, tap menu, then clear map, so it
won't keep talking

Also, if I'm asking someone for a ride, I don't expect them to always

Hi,

I have been following this thread and I am concern that individuals are
relying too much on GPS apps or stand-a-lone GPS units. We must
remember

that GPS is only a tool and it doesn't replace our orientation and

mobility

skills. It's to give us information and the information is only as good

as

the databases that the GPS apps or separate units have access to. This

past
weekend I was up in San Francisco and all three GPS products were
having
issues in giving precise information. At one point, all of them stated
to

turn left where there was a No Left Turn sign (car route mode). I
understand that the choices we make regarding which GPS apps one will
use

is

a personal matter, and individual GPS apps should not be knocked. This

can

give a misconception to those who haven't purchased a GPS app for their
phone. As one of the other posts stated, it will all change when the

iPhone5
will be available regarding the purchasing of GPS apps. I

Re: Talking charger for Apple, microUSB and any USB device

2012-08-10 Thread Todd Bernhard
Mary,

The Peak from myCharge.com is MUCH better than the PowerBank from Speed
Dots. Here are some of the reasons.

1) It charges an iPad. Most battery packs don't provide the 2.1 Amps
required.

2) The cables are built-in so you don't have to worry about remembering or
losing the adaptors. They have Apple 30 pin and micro USB, plus a USB port.

3) The device can recharge via USB or using the built-in 2-prong plug and a
regular wall outlet, which is faster and very convenient.

Most importantly, it talks and tells you battery status.

It is expensive at almost $100, but it's a premium product. There is a
cheaper version, with half the battery life, for $80.

Re: volume of certain apps question.

2012-08-10 Thread David Chittenden
No, and a solution would actually be quite complex.

On a regular phone, if you want to block certain sounds from going over the
phone line, you would place your hand over the mouthpiece to muffle and distort
the sounds, or you would press a mute button if the phone has it.

The iPhone has a digitally controlled mute feature which, when you are using
speakerphone and VO, mutes the mic for the exact length of time that speech or
feedback sounds are occurring. In most cases, these tiny mutes are not noticed
by the person on the other end. When sound is going to the earpiece or headset,
this is not a problem because, of course, the channels are separated. Note that
standard speakerphones have sound meters which set the box in transmit or
receive mode. They do not do both simultaneously. In fact, at the absence of
sound meeting the minimum threshold, they either wait in transmit or receive
mode (depending on the phone and how it was programmed by its manufacturer). I
have seen both set-ups, and prefer the speakerphones which default to receiving
mode.

Now, what you are asking for is even more complex and would require a sound
analysis buffer be placed between the mic and the transmission of the signal.
This buffer would need to analyse the sound wave forms and drop those forms
that match the sounds of your fingers manipulating controls. This would take up
system resources and add delay to transmission.

Another possibility is to have the mic threshold set to a less sensitive value
and disengage it when that value is not maintained. Of course, you then
introduce the brief delay it takes to re-engage the mic stream when noise above
that threshold is detected, and if you add a buffer, you run in to the system
resources problem and the over-all delay in conversation.

Finally, you can map out the specific frequencies of fingers effecting controls
and permanently block those frequencies. Now, you have the problem of dead
zones in the sound scape. If a person's voice inflection happens to move in to
that specific frequency range, the listener will not hear anything. By the way,
this has happened to me in the past. Old analog phone lines were quite limited
on their frequency range, and anything outside this range was chopped. In fact,
if you make a Skype-out phone call, and then make a Skype to Skype call to the
same party, the Skype to Skype call will sound much clearer because Skype
allows a much broader frequency range than analog.

iPhone and automated numeric response prompts

2012-08-10 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

With an iPhone, how does one go about entering numeric keypad responses
to navigate within an automated system?

I've heard one can use a comma after the phone number. The comma
introduces a pause; several commas produce a longer pause.

But not all automated systems are one layer deep, and some require a
fair degree of interactivity within the system before one knows which is
the desired numeric response, or series of responses.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Yep, so for the cost of an iPhone and a couple gps apps, you get a dedicated
gps solution running on obsolete hardware and the privilege of paying more per

I, on the other hand, pay less upfront cost for a much more versitile device
with no annual payments if I am happy with just annual updates. The increased

 Eileen,

I am so glad you brought that up. Ever since my very first Trekker
about 5 years ago, I have been saying that a GPS is a good mobility
tool and nothing else. As well as helping you, it can also get you
killed if you pay more attention to it than to your orientation and
mobility. You must never pay so much attention to the device that you
forget to pay attention to what you are doing. If I am about to cross
a street and the GPS talks while I am reading my traffic, I ignore it
and make my crossing as I have been trained to do and just stop and
press the repeat button on the other side. It also seems to me like
too many people think that the GPS will go and place your hand on the
door knob. I am lucky to get within 10 metres of a target and use my
dog's and my ability to do the rest.

Subject: GPS Apps Stand-A-Lone GPS Units

Now!! I will
probably be cut down for this, but it is the Sendero GPS on my Apex
that I eventually turn on to get more precise information and options
that are not available on my GPS apps on the phone. At least I have
lots of options to get the info that I need when I am out-and-about.
However, these options do not replace my ability to travel with the white
 cane.

 Thanks for listening.

 Eileen

RE: iPhone and automated numeric response prompts

2012-08-10 Thread Michelle McQuigge
You have been well-informed about the comma, and I have recently tested the
system on a teleconference line that demands a password, then a menu option
to verify my choice. It worked flawlessly. You can hear the numbers being
entered, and they sound very natural. No menu option was activated until the
automated prompts had been allowed to run on for a second or two. In my
case, I had to call the number in question once or twice to figure out
precisely what menu options to pre-program. Here's what I did:

1. In my contact for the number in question, I entered the phone number for
the teleconference line as usual. The numeric keypad used to enter phone
numbers features a shift key. Once I'd entered the phone number, I
double-tapped that shift key to pull up other options.
2. Certain punctuation marks appeared in place of the numbers. I did not
enter a space, but simply entered comma immediately after the teleconference
number.
3. In my example, I followed this comma with the teleconference password,
plus the pound symbol to expedite the menu.
 4. I then entered another comma, then the number 1 (which was the menu
choice to verify the password I had provided).

It was that straight-forward. Please let me know if I misunderstood your
question, confused you even further or need to provide any clarification.

Best,
Michelle

Hi,

With an iPhone, how does one go about entering numeric keypad responses to
navigate within an automated system?

I've heard one can use a comma after the phone number. The comma introduces
a pause; several commas produce a longer pause.

But not all automated systems are one layer deep, and some require a fair
degree of interactivity within the system before one knows which is the
desired numeric response, or series of responses.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

iMessages VS text messages

2012-08-10 Thread Vicky Collins
Are text messages delivered more reliably than iMessages? For,
sometimes, when I've sent an iMessage to my sister, she has told
me she didn't get it till a few hours later, although she
normally gets them pretty quickly after I have sent them.

On the other hand, though, my brother tells me that he doesn't
get the iMessages I send around seven in the morning when he is
away from home, until he gets back home after five in the
afternoon. But, when I turned off the iMessage feature and just
sent him a text message today, he got it right away, around the
seven in the morning. Oh, I can normally receive his iMessages
just after they are sent.

You'll need another app for editing. Also I don't know of any apps which will
allow accessible editing of Word docs. If you want to edit on the IOS device,
you can use rich text with some apps but you are best to go for plain text an
than there are hundreds of apps which will sync with dropbox and allow
accessible editing. My personal fav is Elements but there are a few free ones
as well.

Fleksy

2012-08-10 Thread Tara Prakash
Does the app allow you to undo changes if you deleted words by mistake?

  sieghard,
I did it, I Got it to just capitalize the g in the word got. Thank you so
much for the help! I will now try to bring up the send screen following your
advice. Thanks so much.

  Hi Reggie,

You delete by swiping left. If you are typing the slow way, i.e. by touching
and holding the screen until you hear the letter spoken, swiping left will
erase each letter you typed this way one at a time. If you are typing the fast
way by touching approximately where you think the letter should be and by doing
the pattern, then a swipe left will undo what you typed since the last word,
e.g. if you want to type “Hello Peter” and you typed Hello correctly and it
read it back and then you realize you started out wrong for “peter”, you swipe
left once and there is a little swish sound which means you can start over. If
you typed Peter and it doesn’t come up and is not in the list of suggestions,
just do a swipe left after you reach the end of the suggestions and, if for
example the last word in the suggestions was “other” Fleksy would make the
swish sound and say “deleted other”. Now you can give it another try.

As for capitalization, you have to find the letter you want to capitalize the
“slow way”, then once Voiceover announces the letter lift your finger and do a
1-finger swipe up from the bottom towards the top, sometimes and I think it’s
mostly if you have typed nothing else yet, Voiceover just repeats the letter
and you have to swipe up a second time before it will capitalize it. You said
in your message “I have tried moving my finger up on the screen” so I believe
you may slide your finger up after you find the letter without lifting it
first, you have to do a definite swipe or flick up not a slow slide.

I just tried this by typing “iPhone” the slow way, I find the “I” then lift
my finger, then I find the “p”, lift my finger and then a single swipe up will
say “capital p”. If, however, I type the word “Phone” as my first word and do
it the slow way, I have to swipe up twice after I find the “p” because the
first time I swipe up it just says “p” and the second time it says “capital p”.

If you hear what you just typed, i.e. if the text is read back to you, you
are touching too high because this reading back of what you typed is triggered
by covering up the proximity sensor and it is right at the very top and just to
the left of the slot in the glass where your earpiece Is. If you do want Fleksy
to read back what you typed you can either raise the phone to your ear or you
can just hover your hand or palm over the top of the phone, you don’t have to
actually touch the screen to trigger this.

As for activating the menu once you are done typing, try and touch the screen
at the level of where the volume up and down buttons are. In fact, you could
put a finger over top of them so you feel both the volume up and down, then
lift that finger move right just a bit (you don’t have to be in the middle of
the screen) and plop it down on the screen just to the right of where the
volume buttons are, hold for half a second or so and you should hear the dong
followed immediately by Voiceover saying “Alert” followed by the text you
typed, as soon as you hear the dong you can lift your finger off the screen, if
it is a long message you can touch the screen once with 2 fingers to stop
Voiceover from continueing to read. Now you can swipe right and find the option
you want, Copy and Clear, email, message etc. If you want to continue and add
more text, double tap on the “Cancel” button just above the Home Key, it is the
last option in the menu, but quickly found by putting your finger on the Home
Key and sliding up just a bit.

  Good luck,

  Sieghard

Re: Fleksy is now free to try

2012-08-10 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi Katey ,
yes, I put Fleksy on my iPad. I am a terrible typist on a regular key
board, and usually start out touch typing, and slowly revert to the hunt
and peck method.
With Fleksy my hunt and peck has increased in speed about 50%.

Considering how well this app works on all my devices, I am beginning to
believe that this app was created just for me!

 Hello All,

I must say I *really* like the latest update of Fleksey. I find that I'm
even faster now that we don't have to keep doing the tripple click each
time we want to use the app and then I especially like the copy clear
button at the top of the menus.

This incredible app continues to improve with each new update! I'm glad
that they have a free version for those who may want to try before they buy
if especially if they don't know anyone who has the app.

Has anyone put it on their iPad yet? I'm considering putting it on here
to see how it does, but I do have a bluetooth keyboard case so I do always
have a hardware keyboard for times such as now when I want to type a lot of
text, otherwise I use the on screen one just fine.

 thanks for reading.

I agree Chuck. Just use the copy and clear button. I prefer not to have
the interface crowded with additional unnecessary buttons, especially at
the top of the list of options.

Also, you can clear the text by swiping left and holding until you hear

On the other hand, though, my brother tells me that he doesn't get the

Yes, I put Fleksy on my iPad. I am basically a hunt and peck typist, so
