Bluetooth On/Off with SIRI
Hi Avnish, SIRI can open apps, but at this point you cannot turn Bluetooth or WiFi on and off using SIRI, at least not officially. However, there is a work-around which would involve you buying an app for $0.99 called Bluetooth X by CXI Gaming. This is Bluetooth one word and then a space and then the letter x. When I originally downloaded this app back in June it was called BluetoothC but I think they must have renamed it and I am actually amazed Apple hasn't pulled it off the app store since they usually don't allow such apps. Anyhow, now with SIRI's ability to open apps, I am able to simply say Bluetooth and bingo, the Bluetooth app launches and if you set up the Quick Mode under Settings and Bluetooth and by that I mean the entry for the Bluetooth app, not the system Bluetooth, then just launching the app will turn on Bluetooth, launch the app again and it will turn it off. I used to have this app on my home screen, but now I can tuck it away into my Utility folder or somewhere out of the way since I can launch it with SIRI. Oh, and I did check just now and the app was on the app store and my above described search term will pull it up. Once again, it's from CXI Gaming and it costs 99 Cents, the version I had on my iPhone before I upgraded to iOS 6 works perfectly well after the upgrade so I assume it would do so as well if you buy and install it now. Changing rotor is dots 2 3 chord or dots 5 6 chord. Single finger vertical flick is up and down arrows if your display has arrows. Hi. I also like this new keyboard behavior. I'm glad that it pretty much does the same thing as Fleksy where you just tap on a letter and it types it. Hi, I'm confused. The IOS keyboard with Voiceover has had that overall ability since IOS 4. Its just that now, you touch type includes shift, delete, more numbers, etc. Fleksy is more about its capability to predict text. Hi David, You bring up a valid concern that I started to have as I kept playing with the whiz wheels last night. I found that if I moved them a hair's breadth, I could mostly move down one line, but this would not work if I moved down one full click. Unfortunately, I use programs at work that work with braille but not at all with speech, so even though I have a PMA, having my unit serviced is nod an option. I was planning to wait until I went on vacation to have it cleaned to at least minimize the work downtime a bit. So if it really is failing, unfortunately, it will have to wait for now. Still, none of this changes the fact that we no longer have dedicated functions to move up and down by line. Having to go into the rotor to affect a navigation key's function is a bad design, in my opinion. Mark, First, why would you not use Maps over the Treker? What are the most significant difference or feature prevents you from using Maps over that device? Second, why do you say that the Maps app could not have the level of POIs that the ATT Navigator app has? The one thing that everyone has to remember is as time progresses, APple will no doubt improve and enhance the Maps application. Hello, After I upgraded my iPhone 4 today, I noticed my screen curtain was not working. Three-finger triple-tap caused VO to announce off and on status, but the screen remained bright. Wonderful, I thought, such a basic VO bug. So, I decided I would investigate when I got home this evening. Before I could, I received a call. Two-finger double-tap would not disconnect the call. What was going on. I turned my iPhone off to disconnect the call. It took a significantly longer time to start back up after shut down. When it came on again, the screen curtain was working fine. Also, double-tap properly ends calls again. I suggest you turn your iPhone off and then on again. I bet it will clear up your VO sluggishness. Always had good success with All Football Radio as well. Usually there are several stations listed for a game. So, if 1 is not working, a conflict, etc. You can usually find another which does have the game. The only team feed I've not been able to get this season is the Denver Broncos feed. However, I'm not the biggest NFL fan. So, I am not as particular as to which announcers I listen to when listening to a game as I am with baseball. So, if the Broncos were playing, I wouldn't mind listening to the other teams announcers. I've had a couple issues with College games though. For instance, the Vanderbilt stations which have been listed, haven't had anything on them at all. Not even any music. So, that seems to be some sort of streaming issue. Well, you could do it over 3G if you have a computer. Because the update is 599 MB, you cannot upgrade directly over 3G. Note that there is some risk if you tether your iPhone and use a computer with iTunes. What I meant to say in my last message was, I agree, but it is a poor design of the braille display, not of iOS. All the screen-readers take advantage of the arrow keys / arrow pointer sticks / arrow buttons that almost every other braille display keyboard combo has, including FS's old PACMate. FS really has no excuse for such a poor design choice that requires special coding to work around, especially considering the Focus Blue is a relatively new braille display. Losing focus in email with replying to messages Hello everybody: I have noticed that VoiceOver loses the focus when I reply to a message. Hi, I think great is a relative term. haha. Its been my experience that, you truly do get what you pay for with headphones. Since these are $30 headphones, say, $20 and an extra $10 for the Apple name, it will just be middle of the road. I just think they will be way more comfortable. The old headphones were terrible so, I can't wait to ditch them and use the ear pods. At least until I get back my Shure 215s. BTW, the ear pods are wired. I also heard a piece on PRI's (public radio international) Marketplace about this issue. In the rush to unseat Googlemaps, Apple has offered us a maps app that doesn't have bus, subway, or other public transit information, a major component of Googlemaps. I wonder if it has pedestrian mode? My question is “Is it safe to install IOS 6 on an ATT factory unlocked phone? I was told when I bought my 3GS 32GB phone from a seller on Ebay that having a factory unlocked phone would allow me to update it, but I want to make sure before doing something that will mess up the factory unlock. One thing that Navigator does offer, however, is an amazing points of interest list that I doubt the Maps app can offer. The great thing about iOS is that there is something for everyone. With the old Nokia phones, I recall feeling a short vibration when the phone restarted. It would be handy to have this happen with the iPhone, in addition to the audible tones. Chris. Thanks for this suggestion. I did try it and also had a look around on the net. The problem with using gmail to store my notes is that I can only create them from my IPhone. I'd like to be able to create notes on either pC and then have it sync automatically with my IPhone. I also looked at the ICloud website and while the buttons are readable, they don't seem to do an awful lot when you press enter on them because I thought this might be a good solution to my problem. It seems like Apple releases two phones that are built alike and then changes the physical phone. There was the 3 then the 3g. Then came the 4 followed by the 4s. Hi Shawn, The new keyboard behavior is nothing like Flexy, You can't have had any success with it at all so far but it's definitely (next to Siri) the biggest thing since slice bread or even apples. It deserves many more tries and seems to give on average about a 3-fold increase in speed for most of us. My update was pretty successful, got an error message about it failing to install the update for some reason though. At least it worked the second time. I tried to use the turn by turn directions yersterday. It would announce how far away from my house I was, until I got close to my destination. Then it told me that my destination was 250 feet on the right. I didn't see anything useful in between. I only went 4 tenths of a mile, but I think I need to play with it a bit more. Hi Shawn, Remember that the keyboard used in Flexy is much taller. Next, the most common mistake is waiting for the letter to be spoken. Holding your finger on any letter that long can totally muck up their neat predictive algorithm. Hello David, I definitely appreciate your comments and suggestions. I think FS has done a great job designing the Focus. It's just the new key mapping that has been the game changer for me. You suggested using the right rocker bar to pan up and down by line. This is how both rocker bars used to work in iOS. However, with this new update, the left rocker bar does a three finger flick up or down, and the right rocker bar does a three finger swipe left and right. There are also two panning buttons, but they pan by display length and not by line. Depending on what you're trying to do, this is a very tedious alternative. So as of now, with my whiz wheels flying all over the place, and with the whiz wheels tied to the rotor on top of that, iOS navigation with the Focus has become clunky. On another note to Annie, I don't personally use reverse panning, but would love to see it implemented for those who do. Maybe it could be a setting under the Braille support section of the VO control panel. We all have different reading styles, and I think they should be supported, whenever possible. This is a feature upon which I insist when traveling alone, in unfamiliar areas. As to your second question, in my opinion, Apple is not in the business of Map making and, while they may offer very good solutions, I suspect that A T T Wireless, with its vast nationwide telephone infrastructure has more resources dedicated to maintaining POI updated listings. Hi, Like others on the list, I was a member of the 96% club, but after a bit, while I was on a call on my land line, the update finished up and the phone announced that it was about to restart. Naturally, speech went away and all activity appeared to stop, at least audibly. While I waited, and waited... and waited some more, I took the opportunity to install the latest iTunes on my laptop. When that was done, I unplugged and reconnected the phone, and iTunes told me that the phone was at IOS 6.0. Somehow I got speech back on the phone but I really can't say exactly how that happened. When it did, there was an iPhone icon in the center of the screen and another one at the bottom, which, when I found it, was spoken in some sort of foreign language that sounded vaguely Asian but I couldn't say if it was Chinese or Korean; I really have no idea. I tapped the iPhone icon and was told to enter my Apple ID password so that I could set up iCloud and iMessage. Once I did this, and dealt with the obligatory license agreement and yadayadayada, lo and behold, my Home screen appeared and I breathed a sigh of relief. So all appears to be well, and my first impression is that my iPhone 4 seems to be a bit snappier in its response, but time will tell. Just wanted to recount my experience with the update. Last night I tried to update my phone. But after being plugged into itunes for like three hours, I got a message saying the update could not be done because the firnware was incompatible. What's that about? Anybody have any suggestions? iOS6 Oddity with Voice Over volume following a call
Hi All, Since updating to iOS 6 on my iPHone 4S, when ending a call that I instigated, Voice Over seems to be off, in fact, its volume has been reduced to 0%… Has anyone else experienced this at all…? My resolution to date, has simply been, following the call, and the seemingly now dead iPhone, to simply tap the screen anywhere and press and hold the physical volume up key. I also have experienced the same issue, although not every time, when using Siri and the Dictate button within SMS / iMessage etc. Any thoughts? After Bob's note yesterday I tried this and find fleksy operates about the same speed as before the upgrade. I intentionally typed as fast as I could and it had no trouble keeping up. not sure what's going on. No problems moving or deleting apps. I moved a couple of folders in fact from one screen to another and moved some apps both within folders and outside folders. Regardless of whether I initiate or answer a call, when the call ends, either via a double-tap on my part or the other party disconnecting, VoiceOver acts just as it should, or rather, as it always has. Do I need plugged-in phone to update?
I want to update this morning. Do I need to have the charger on the phone during the update? I still do not have a proper iTunes on computer that makes any sense so will be updating through the air.
