RE: voiceover during a call
Hi Robert, I just send a reply to Apple Accessibility about Voiceover volume during a call. I reported this to them and they replied with some suggestions, but they only consisted of the explanation about how to make sure speakerphone mode is properly activated which means they thought somehow the phone hadn't switched to speakerphone and this is why I couldn't hear Voiceover. I have no problem with my phone switching to speakerphone when I take it away from my ear. I am not sure if you have your phone in a case, but make sure you try it without case as sometimes a case can cover the proximity sensor and that is what causes your phone to switch to speakerphone. I usually do this: I dial the number I want to call and after I double tap on call I put my hand over the top part of the phone where the slot is in the glass for the earpiece. Once the phone on the other end starts ringing I remove my hand and now the proximity sensor should of course notice nothing is covering it and switch to speakerphone. However, I still have the volume issue. I have volume in my rotor settings and after a call connects I can turn up VO volume to 100% by turning the rotor to Volume and then flicking up until I get to 100%. Then I turn down the call volume to as low as it will go with the volume down button, but first of all the call volume does not seem to go lower than a certain level and Voiceover even at 100% can hardly be heard over the call volume. You can of course work around this by using a headset, but I definitely suggest you write to Apple Accessibility and report this because it seems to be one of those bugs which most iPhone 5 users and some iPhone 4S and 4 users also don't seem to have. I did a factory reset about 3 days after I updated to iOS 6 because of a few other issues and at first this seemed to be better, but after I tried to place calls where I had to enter numbers, listen to menus etc. a few times I find it really isn't much better if at all. As far as I am concerned this is one of the more inconvenient and serious bugs because one has to enter numbers or listen to menus so often and of course I also can't put the phone in speakerphone and look up other information during a call such as maybe a phone number, something in an email or another app. It would be interesting to know how many people experience this problem and while it adds to list traffic, the traffic is down significantly from what it was so maybe everybody who reads this could test this and post whether they can hear Voiceover comfortably during a call when the phone is on speakerphone or not. Before the iOS 6 update this was no problem for me on my 4S. Re: Should resetting the iPhone in IOS 6 cause loss of Voiceover
HI, This just happened to me for the first time since the upgrade to 6. i have reset before with no problems. I discovered that voiceover was turned on but triple click home was off . I had to tturn triple click home to VO before all was well again. I should say that although I do have a Braille keyboard paired to the phone, I did not have it turned on at the time, indeed, i have not used it since the upgrade. So, I don't think that the Braille keyboard is the issue. Strange that it has not happened in previous resets though. Also, I note that all my settings under VO were set back to the defaults. i had, for example, Large text turned on, but this was off after the reset. So I am thinking this is a bug relating to the triple click being automatically set to on for VO rather than anything else. not sure now, but think that when I first looked in settings/general/Accessibility/Voiceover Vo was still turned on, but it was not working, as if it had been triple clicked to off, because the voice was not only missing, but touching the screen worked in the way it does when VO is off, I.E. touching an item enabled it and double tapping did nothing. Sorry for the messy thoughts, here is my conclusion, it is a problem with the Triple Click Home being disabled after a reset. Sandy. I experience this as well, but what is interesting is the level of the volume seems to raise and lower erratically. I am not sure how I can really test this, but sometimes it seems as though perhaps VO is coming out from the speaker on the bottom of the phone (when it sounds louder) and then suddenly switches to the speaker in the earpiece. I have no idea if this is really happening, but it just seems that way. I plan to write Apple about this as well, but I wanted to try and determine if there is anything I am doing while touching the screen etc. or if there is anything I can provide that may help determine the issue first. Re: Downcast - Is there a way to import mp3 file from Dropbox into Downcast?
Yes Open the file in Dropbox app You can pause playback Now there's 3 buttons on the bottom of the screen Double Tap Add to favourites. Wait for the file to download. When it has downloaded, the Export button will no longer be dimmed. You can now double tap it and Downcast will be one of the options Finish the import in Downcast and the file will be in the list of podcasts under a podcast called Imported X Garth Http://www.iblindtech.com Sent from my iPhone On 13/10/2012, at 12:57, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. kramlinger.ke...@mayo.edu wrote: Thanks in advance. Hi All. I am having problems with my e-mails. I am posting this to two lists just in case others are having this problem. If I send e-mails from my I phone even though my present e-mail is selected, I get the message, kawal_gucuko...@icloud.com has been rejected from the server as in the from field that e-mail address is selected even though I'm using g...@me.com and when I go into the settings I see kawa...@me.com is selected and I see that is the default address. So I do not know why my other e-mail is still being used. Any ideas? This problem only started today but it was only a few days ago when I noticed that new e-mail. I am using my Mac Book Pro to send this mail as I can't send using my I phone until this has been resolved. I can get incoming mail with no problem. Thank you. RE: voiceover during a call
I experience this on my 4S as well running iOS 6. It's definitely a bug since restoring to factory defaults does not make any difference. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: 13. oktober 2012 11:56 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: voiceover during a call I experience this as well, but what is interesting is the level of the volume seems to raise and lower erratically. On Oct 13, 2012, at 4:22 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Robert, I just send a reply to Apple Accessibility about Voiceover volume during a call. Re: Ipad or mini laptop?
Hi. It really depends on the tasks that you want to accomplish. If you're just taking notes, checking email, web browsing, etc, I'd just go with an iPad paired with a bluetooth keyboard for speed typing. If however, you're doing more advanced word processing, spreadsheets, etc, I'd go with a smaller laptop. These tasks can be more time wasting than productive on an iPad in my opinion. I'm in college now, and for some classes I'll just take my iPad for note taking and email. However, when I'm going to my accounting class for example, I'll take my MacBook Air so I can use Excel in virtual Windows. Hope this helps you make you're decision. Matthew Campbell. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
I'm wondering the same thing. I'm used to a 40-cell braillelite 40 which is still plugging away but unfortunately won't work with anything on the Mac except Terminal. I see the low prices of some of these 12, 14, 18 and even 20-cell displays and wonder if I wouldn't be frustrated. I also see the trend toward everything being dependent on the computer or smart device instead of being able to use it as a stand-alone also and while I see the benefits I wonder if I will be happy with something that forces me to always have to have two devices of some kind together. Yet it's not like I can really picture me affording a stand-alone unit with maybe an sd card slot so I'm not limited by the braille device's storage. so I'm trying to reconcile myself to being glad to buy a device that will work with phone and computer. I think I can do that but I'm not sure I can convince myself that a device with so few cells, even at an almost affordable cost, will be worth it. I also would like to hear from people who habitually have used 32 and 40 cell displays as to whether they really find the displays with fewer cells satisfying for purposes of reading and web browsing. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
I read a lot of books on my IPod, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to use something like a 12-cell display. I have a preference for Braille books over audio. I can definitely understand a use for a small display with Idevices, (portability, reading with light email and web browsing, and writing practice with Braille beginners) but personally, this wouldn't be my choice. I haven't actually checked out the small ones, so I can't evaluate them yet. If I get a chance, I may do so one of these days. I use my Focus 40 Blue with both my Mac and IPod, and I switch back and forth constantly by either locking the screen on my Ipod, or unloading VO on my Mac. I am very satisfied with this arrangement for my own purposes. Sorry it was late. I like the look and feel of the 14. Even though the A.P.H one smaller its also bulky. The 14 is newer and it's oblong like a dollar and thinner. Other than that I'm learning how to use a braille device and always wanted portable verses a bigger device even though the larger displays gives more information from the screen at one time. RE: Braille Displays For iPhone
That is not a glitch with the RefreshaBraille, that is the way it is with all braille displays and the iPhone. If you pause for more than about a half a second, and you are using contracted braille, the symbol you last typed will expand to its uncontracted meaning. So, if you are writing a name like Johnston, and you pause a little too long before writing the n that follows the h, you will get johavenston. The h will have back translated to have. That will happen with every braille input device used with the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. You just have to get used to it and not pause in the wrong place. RE: Email address in iMessage
Hi Kawal, iMessage requires your Apple Id to work, but you don't have to add any email addresses which means iMessages are only delivered to your mobile number. As far as I know nobody can send an iMessage to the email that is your Apple Id unless you add that email in Settings Messages. I am not sure what you mean exactly by the sentence in your message: What it is, I want to not associate an e-mail address with I message but when I do that, any messages I wish to send to an I message user, they will send at normal Text MS message even though I message is on. You say you don't want to associate an email with iMessage, but you also say when I do that which I understand but when I do associate an email with iMessage. As far as receiving messages, any messages sent by somebody who uses iOS 5 or 6 and who has iMessage enabled will be send/received as an iMessage whether they send it to your mobile phone number or an email which you associated with iMessage. As I said, I am a bit unclear what exactly you mean so maybe you can explain further. I personally like to send/receive iMessages if it's possible because even though I have an unlimited texting plan iMessages have advantages, e.g. the 160 character limit does not apply, you know when my message was received and I can see if somebody is replying. Re: Email address in iMessage
Hello Sieghard. I too like sending I messages to people who have I messaging capability. What I'm trying to say is, if I send I messages using my I phone without associating an e-mail address, so I use my mobile number to send rather than my Mac, I am unable to send as I messages and so the normal text messaging will be used. If I want to send an I message using my phone, I have to associate let's say my e-mail that I'm sending from. Before, when using IOS5 when I message started, I could send I messages to people without having to associate my e-mail address (this was always done using my mobile). The Mac did not even have I messaging capability. So what has gone wrong here, I don't know. All I want to do is sending I messages using my I phone using my mobile number but I don't want to associate an e-mail address with it i.e. my present e-mail address. I hope all this makes sense. RE: Ipad or mini laptop?
The MacBook Air is a computer, the iPad is a tablet. You can connect USB devices to the Macbook Air, you cannot connect USB devices to the iPad--that includes external memory sticks, printers, CD drives, etc. You can get a lot more memory installed in a MacBookAir. I believe the smallest MacBook Air is 11 inches. Being a laptop, it has a physical keyboard built-in. I believe they start at around $1,100.00 and go up from there depending on memory etc. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Ramy Moustafa Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2012 10:52 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Ipad or mini laptop? Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
I think a lot of it will come down to two factors as I see it. First how much panning bothers you. I have an 18 cell display and I think 24 would be maybe a little better and certainly 32 or 40 would be the best. However, the other factor is portability and ease of typing. THe Refreshabraille I have is 18 cells and that is probably as few cells as I could live with, but it is very portable and easy to type on. That is why I chose that display and not to mention it was the most affordable display at the time that would work with the iOS devices to my knowledge. On Oct 13, 2012, at 10:55 AM, Cheryl Ann Homiak cahom...@gmail.com wrote: I'm wondering the same thing. Re: iPhone 5
I have to admit that looking at Sprints offerings I am rather impressed. FOr my wife and I it would cost me only a couple more dollars to get twice the level of service. No make that three times the service. I could get unlimited data, text, and 1,500 minutes of babble time (evenings start at 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) both iPhones for $120. That is before a 15% discount via my employer. Either way I'd come out ahead. Only thing is I'd have to figure out their coverage area. And with ATT and the games they seem to want to play on iPhone subscribers, it is making the decision a lot easier when my contract expires with ATT. RE: Email address in iMessage
Hi Kawal, Well, this one is beyond me. If I go to the Messages app and start a text message for example to one of my employees who has an iPhone as well, the message automatically goes as an iMessage. I just had a look at the Messages settings and if you go into where it says Send and Receive, 2 addresses button you do have various options. By the way, I just used 2 addresses as an example, if you had your mobile number and 1 email address associated iwith iMessages, it would say 2 addresses. Anyhow, in this area you do have a heading Start new conversations from and here my mobile number along with the email addresses I have associated are listed. In my case my mobile number says selected and I assume that I could select one of my email addresses and then it would show as the default from address. Maybe check to see if your mobile number is selected here. RE: Ipad or mini laptop?
Hi, If you want a very small Windows laptop, there are quite a few that are around, or possibly less than, 10 inches. Acer and Asus I believe both make Netbook computers that are quite small. They are not going to have the battery life of an MacBook Air or an iPad. You can write text documents very easily on the iPad. Technically, you can write Word documents with Pages, but personally the effort you have to go to to deal with all the work around to me is not worth it. You can search the archives of this list to find lots of comments about word processing, or even go to www.applevis.com and read about the various text editing apps that have been recommended for the Apple devices. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
Hi all. As someone who has used both the Focus 14 and the Refreshabraille 18, but who has my own personal preferences, here are my thoughts. I'm replying to several messages at once here btw. One of the advantages of the RB is the fact that you have 4 more cells to work with. That may not sound like a big deal to some, but when you're reading books and long emails such as the one I'm typing now, it can become a factor. It certainly was for me, a braille reader who uses braille about 95% of the time to access my iDevices. However, there are some pluses to the Focus 14. I like the keyboard slightly better, as I don't have to press so hard on the keys, the lower price is nice, and, that awful USB plug present on the Refreshabraille 18 is not an issue on the 14. I can expand on what I mean by the USB plug comment if anyone wants. And, finally, there is another option that has not been brought up here as of yet. The Perkins Mini is a 16 cells display which has basic note taking capabilities and is compatible with iOS 6. It's good for reading books and you're not dependent on a connected device for everything. The memory used is a micro SD card. However, I personally do not like the keyboard, but that could be just me. Essentially, you have the keyboard above the display, the display itself which is set at a lower hight than the display, and then spacebars on the other side of the display, meaning that they're quite a ways from the keyboard. Some people have indicated that they become used to the keyboard, but it was not comfortable for me. The price of the Perkins Mini is $1549, which is more than the Focus 14 and less than the RB 18. After reading all this, you're probably wondering my preference. I'm not sure, since my preferences don't necissarily line up with anyone elses. You have the info now, and I'm willing to answer more questions as I can, but I never feel it's right to place too much on the recommendation of another without having all the facts. What works for me, may not work for you. Hope this helps, Scott On 10/13/12, Cheryl Ann Homiak cahom...@gmail.com wrote: Sorry, I'm using my linux mail and forgot to include messages. My phone number is selected here, in the receive, and next to that my Icloud ID which is kawa...@me.com. One of these days, I'm going to get a 24 cell if funds permit! For those of you that don't know, the Essys has a notetaker function independent of anything along with a small card which you can put in another device for more memory. Kawal. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
I had an 18 cell Braillenote many years ago and was able to read books and other long documents rapidly on it. When I switched to a 32 cell Braillnote it took some getting used to because I had all of those extra cells. I would not want to go any smaller than 18 cell for reading because you might only get one or two words on each line. I plan to purchase a Focus 40 Blue in the near future. That decision was made because of the excellent discussion on this group. On 10/13/12, Kawal Gucukoglu kawa...@me.com wrote: I am sorry to ask, what is the Perkins Mini? I've not heard of it. The small PC's do not have speech or screen enlarging capabilities and I don't think the free screen readers have the capabilities of ones you purchase. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
Hi. The Perkins mini is bluetooth compatible and is a 16 cell display distributed by Perkins here in the US. I think it's also being sold under the name Seka Mini in other parts of the world. It has a built in notetaker and a few other functions, much like the Braille Edge, but it has its differences, some of which I listed in my last email. Scott On 10/13/12, Marianne Denning maria...@denningweb.com wrote: I had an 18 cell Braillenote many years ago and was able to read books and other long documents rapidly on it. If I were going for a smaller braille display such as a 24 cell, I'd choose the Essys as I have the 40, which I'd like to use with my Mac and not my I phone. One of these days, I'm going to get a 24 cell if funds permit! For those of you that don't know, the Essys has a notetaker function independent of anything along with a small card which you can put in another device for more memory. Kawal. On 13 Oct 2012, at 20:24, Scott Davert scottslistm...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all. Re: voiceover during a call
it is the case that is causing the problem. The case was on my 3gs *** character is found in how you treat people who can't do anything for you. web page http://www.wrighthere.net - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2012 2:22 AM Subject: RE: voiceover during a call Hi Robert, I just send a reply to Apple Accessibility about Voiceover volume during a call. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
It is a glitch when using any braille display with grade 2 translation. I use a 40-cell at work and have gotten so used to the 14 now that sometimes the 40 almost seems like too much. hard to explain but it's so small and just a neat little device. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
Thanks so much Scott. This was a really good explanation of the three and a helpful discussion of the pros and cons. I hadn't realized that the Perkins mini had sd card capability. On Sat, 13 Oct 2012, Scott Davert wrote: Hi all. Hi, If you go to the top of the screen, you can double tap on the calendars button. RE: Braille Displays For iPhone
If the glitch you are talking about is the fact that if you don't input Braille in grade 2 mode fast enough the entry gets back translated this is not a function of your Braille display but rather a function of the I device Braille translator. For whatever reason the powers that be at Apple who I can't imagine are blind Braille users, decided that if you wait a second or so without entering anything on your Braille display you must be done and want the entry to be back translated. Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
Hi All, When come to braille displays, it is all about personal prefference i think. Either you want something that you can read more than a text, an email, or you wnt something portable that you can take with you wherever you go. If you want something portable, anything with 12 up to 20 cells is good enough. But, if you want something more, like reading a book or a long document or something, you may found that you need a 32cells or more. It comes down to what you want to do, and what you need it for, do you travel a lot, etc etc at the end of the day. Hi Kawal, I think you may just not have seen this because your Apple Id was always required for iMessage to work just as it is required for Facetime to work. iMessages are sent through Apple's servers and your Apple Id is necessary for them to be routed correctly. This has nothing to do with you adding an email address, you could have an email different from your Apple Id added which means somebody with an iPod Touch or an iPad which does not have a phone number can send you an iMessage to your email address, but still you always do have to have your Apple Id entered and this has been the case from day 1 when iMessage became available as a new iOS 5 feature. I personally like to send/receive iMessages if it's possible because even though I have an unlimited texting plan iMessages have advantages, e.g. the 160 character limit does not apply, you know when my message was received and I can see if somebody is

Thanks for the recommendations. Scott, I actually subscribed to Marco's magazine when it was released. I think it's a good venture and he definitely works to make his apps accessible. - Original Message - From: Scott Davert scottslistm...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2012 5:58 PM Subject: Re: Accessible-iOS Access World/Afb site Also, the New York Times, if you read that, is done through News Stand. Help with Swipe Sounds
Is there a way to mute the clicking sound that the IPhone makes while swiping without having to use the mute button? I thought you were able to do it by just turning down the volume until the sound went away but that doesn't seem to work in os6. Any help would be appreciated. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
