Hello,

Has anyone on this LIST had any experience with either of these Apps
(EVI Vlingo) on either the iPhone 4 OR iPhone 4S with IOS 6?

RE: vo talking during phone calls

2012-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi David, Len and others,

My 4S which does have the volume issue during a call also has the issue with
VO reading out the call duration. What happens for me is that often when I
answer a call on my headset everything is fine. If the call is longer,
after 2 or so minutes the screen will lock and Voiceover will say Screen
Locked. Then maybe 20 or 30 seconds later it will start announcing the call
duration about every 20 or so seconds even if I had previously moved focus
away from that during the same phone call.

Sieghard

David,

I have enough troubleshooting experience to have done the below as you
describe. And, VO still ends up on the time. I am not being highly
critical of Apple nor the phone, just stating an observation that I have
duplicated many times as have several others I know who are equally careful.
This has been true both in 5.1.1 and 6.0 with my 4S.

VO to another field either by touching a different area on the

 the touch-screen always remains active.

To silence VO, you can either do a three-finger double-tap to mute

Just remember to use the same gesture when you are finished with
your call to get VO talking again.

RE: Apps EVI Vlingo

2012-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin,

I used to use Dragon Dictation on my iPhone 4 and it worked OK except it was
a bit inconvenient to open the app, dicatate text, then copy and paste it or
send it to email etc. I know Evi is supposed to have some functionality
similar to SIRI, but you mention a 4S, so why not just use SIRI which I
think is far superior as it is fully integrated into the OS and all apps.

Re: an informal review of the Motorola S11-HD Bluetooth headphones

2012-10-28 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Raul,

Thanks for this description. They really sound like a very good product. I've
just bought plantronics m50 which are still in the post. May be I will get
another pair like yours too if the Plantronics m50 are not satisfactory.
On 28 Oct 2012, at 03:49, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote:

Hey all. After many hours of doing research on the net, reading reviews on
Amazon, and reading messages on this list, I ended up purchasing something
totally different. In short, I was out with my family because my wife and
daughter were shopping for a dress because she's going to her first school
dance next week. *my life is over*. Oh, I'm getting off track... Seriously,
so we went to Best Buy because I wanted to see if they have any of the
headphones I've been reading about, but also because I'm a geek and just like
going to Best Buy even though I normally don't buy from there.

In short, after asking about various headsets and all that, the rep told me
about the new ones they just got in from Motorola. The S11-HD. I had read on
Amazon the reviews of the S8 and S10 and they seemed ok, but hadn't jumped
out at me. However upon doing a quick web check while I was there, I saw they
were supposed to retail for $129. Best buy had them for $59. I figured that
since I'd be paying around $40 or $50 from Amazon to get the others I was
looking for, I might as well snag myself one of these since they seemed to be
half off. Later the rep confirmed that they had the wrong price, but since
she said $59, and since that's what was shown on the display, she got the
manager to override the price and sold it to me for that plus tax. So, $64
later I walked out with my new Bluetooth headphones. These are awesome. For
starters they come with extra ear buds so in case the default attached ones
are not to your ear's liking, you can switch them out. The specs claim a
range of up to 150 feet. Although I'm a bit skeptical of that, I can confirm
that walking around my house while the iPhone was charging in my bedroom
didn't cause the music to drop out, turn into static or anything like that.
The phone call I was on also stayed clear. I was able to cause interference
by closing the doors to my bedroom and walking into the garage across the
house and also closing the door behind me. Still though, that is awesome!
Pairing them was a snap, when you power them on, a pleasant female voice
walks you through the steps and the pairing mode was automagically enabled.
So all I did was go into the iPhone's Bluetooth device section and they were
there. I connected them and wasn't asked for a pin, but the nice girl inside
the headphones informed me that if a pin was asked of me, the code is .
Once paired, she informed me that the pairing was successful and then told me
how much talk time I had. The iPhone shows the battery status of the
headphones as well, so that's a neat little feature. While the girls went for
more shopping and later when we ate dinner at the mall, visited more clothing
stores, and played at the ATT store, I wore them and didn't feel
uncomfortable. I can push the ear bud tips all the way in my ear to seal off
outside noise, or I can leave them just outside my ear and that way I can
hear people and things around me. Even if the phone locked and went to sleep,
I was still able to hear the occasional sounds my phone makes if I get a push
notification. I was able to easily receive and make calls, and I was easily
able to start and stop the music. There is more I can write about this new
purchase, but these are the basics.

 Cheers.

Re: RTF DropBox editor

2012-10-28 Thread Esther
Hi Jane and Others,

Jane asked:
Is ther a good ERTF file editor for the DropBox to install on an iPod?
What is it, if there is sucha thing?

I've just come across an app that might be usable for editing Dropbox
RTF files for the iPad, but there's no version for the iPhone or iPod
Touch. It's called Textilus Word Processor and the developer is
knowtilus. Here's the URL at the iTunes app store:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textilus-word-processor/id537818639?mt=8

I found this because it just went on sale today for $0.99, and I
haven't had a chance to play around with this much yet. The way this
works when you create or edit a document is that there's an extended
keyboard with an extra row of buttons above the top row of letters.
The buttons on the top left of the keyboard are for alignment, bold,
italic, underline, special characters, other commands, and tabs (which
weirdly gets announced as capital A). Then at the top center is a
Magic Cursor button that you have to use the double tap and hold
gesture to bring up, which does actions like select all or move to the
start or end of the document. On the top right are the buttons for
font type and size.

The top row buttons let you handle formatting and special characters.
For example, Other Commands lets you select options like title,
subtitle, heading 1, heading 2, ordered list, or unordered list in
addition to subscripting, superscripting, and the default body style.
Special Chars lets you insert web links, date time, as well as
several classes of special symbols, such as bullets, currency, arrows,
punctuation, math symbols, etc. These lists are pretty extensive, and
there are more symbols than VoiceOver on the iOS device will read,
especially in categories like pictographs, arrow variations, or some
of the math symbols, but most special character options are announced.
There's also a recently used category of special characters.

One feature I wasn't able to change with VoiceOver was the line
spacing. Double tapping the Helvetica button brings up a Text
Style pop up menu, but the size and line spacing of the font don't
get announced here. Font size is announced and can get changed with
buttons to the right, either by choosing common font sizes, or by
increasing or decreasing the current font size with buttons.

Dropbox linking can be set up using the App menu toolbar button on
the My Documents titlebar. There's a document that appears in your
list of documents named How it works? when you link with Dropbox.
It explains that it creates an Apps/Textilus folder under your
Dropbox, and that only documents placed ther will sync and show up in
the Textilus app. You can place RTF, .TXT, .DOC, or .DOCX documents in
this folder. Empty folders in this location will be removed from the
document picker and unlinked.

Textilus also supports syncing with Scrivener, which is a Mac writing
application that also now has a Windows version. (The Mac version of
Scrivener is very accessible, but I don't know about the Windows
version. However, there are free trial downloads of both from the
Literature and Latte developer's site.) Maybe some Windows iPad users
can try this app out and report back.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Robert,

Apple would not sell you Apple Care for this device because it is beyond the
one-year period in which you typically could have purchased the APple Care

1. Call Apple's accessibility line at (877) 204-3930 and perhaps they can

2. Do a little searching on Google because it is possible someone has

Re: move by line in ibooks?

I have asked about this before, so hopefully this is coming although why PDF

books we buy. I had asked accessibility@apple for this feature, and I urge
others to do the same. Maybe they will hear us if enough people ask.

button on the headset chord to activate Siri, and voice-dial a number /
contact, you will have eliminated all possibilities of touching the screen

addressed, however I would venture a guess, coming from a training point
of view, that more often than not, it's the person who accidentally
touches the timer. A good way it's been done, and it's happened to me is
when I was putting the phone next to my ear, my lobe touched the screen
in just the right place. I guess I have really big ears. Sure enough,
the timer started telling me all the length of the call. A simple touch
to somewhere else solved that problem.

another field either by touching a different area on the screen, or
using a right or left flick. If you have headphones on, the

To silence VO, you can either do a three-finger double-tap to mute

Just remember to use the same gesture when you are finished with your

Seriously,
so we went to Best Buy because I wanted to see if they have any of the
headphones I've been reading about, but also because I'm a geek and just
like going to Best Buy even though I normally don't buy from there.

In short, after asking about various headsets and all that, the rep told
me about the new ones they just got in from Motorola. The S11-HD. I had read
on Amazon the reviews of the S8 and S10 and they seemed ok, but hadn't
jumped out at me. However upon doing a quick web check while I was there, I
saw they were supposed to retail for $129. Best buy had them for $59. I
figured that since I'd be paying around $40 or $50 from Amazon to get the
others I was looking for, I might as well snag myself one of these since
they seemed to be half off. Later the rep confirmed that they had the wrong
price, but since she said $59, and since that's what was shown on the
display, she got the manager to override the price and sold it to me for
that plus tax. So, $64 later I walked out with my new Bluetooth headphones.
These are awesome. For starters they come with extra ear buds so in case the
default attached ones are not to your ear's liking, you can switch them out.
The specs claim a range of up to 150 feet. Although I'm a bit skeptical of
that, I can confirm that walking around my house while the iPhone was
charging in my bedroom didn't cause the music to drop out, turn into static
or anything like that. The phone call I was on also stayed clear. I was able
to cause interference by closing the doors to my bedroom and walking into
the garage across the house and also closing the door behind me. Still
though, that is awesome! Pairing them was a snap, when you power them on, a
pleasant female voice walks you through the steps and the pairing mode was
automagically enabled. So all I did was go into the iPhone's Bluetooth
device section and they were there. I connected them and wasn't asked for a
pin, but the nice girl inside the headphones informed me that if a pin was
asked of me, the code is . Once paired, she informed me that the pairing
was successful and then told me how much talk time I had. The iPhone shows
the battery status of the headphones as well, so that's a neat little
feature. While the girls went for more shopping and later when we ate dinner
at the mall, visited more clothing stores, and played at the ATT store, I
wore them and didn't feel uncomfortable. I can push the ear bud tips all the
way in my ear to seal off outside noise, or I can leave them just outside my
ear and that way I can hear people and things around me. Even if the phone
locked and went to sleep, I was still able to hear the occasional sounds my
phone makes if I get a push notification. I was able to easily receive and
make calls, and I was easily able to start and stop the music. There is more
I can write about this new purchase, but these are the basics.

 Cheers.

OT: Saving a Favorite in TuneIn's Web-based Application

2012-10-28 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

Like others on this list, I am delighted with the TuneIn Pro iPhone
app. My question is not about that app but about the TuneIn Web-based
or desktop application.

When I first created my TuneIn account, I could search for a radio
station and then
easily save it as a favorite using a link or button labeled something
like Add to
Favorites. Recently, though, I have noticed that the site has
apparently changed,
and my screen reader is no longer seeing the link. It is visible to
the sighted user
as a heart-shaped graphic with the text of save. This likely points
to an accessibility problem introduced by the TuneIn folks. Can
anyone corroborate my experience?

Thank you very much for all help.

Craig

As a follow-up to the recent thread on RTF editors that synchronize with

color visor

2012-10-28 Thread Larry Smith
I purchased the colorvisor yesterday. Unfortunately, I can't get it to work
properly. For the most part, it seem to think that everything is black. Every
now and then, it may say several other colors. However, the other colors
including saying black, is spoken when the camera is pointed at the same item.
Is anyone using this app with much success?

RE: color visor

2012-10-28 Thread Richard Turner
My first day with the update was very impressive. Since then it has been a
bit less impressive, but still better than most.

A couple tips:
Keep the camera a few inches away from the thing you want to know the color
of.
Hold it still and let it settle on one or two colors. It should get down to
saying just one or two similar colors.
If not, turn on the torch, which is a button that takes a bit of flicking to
find. I have noticed that florescent office lights seem to give worse
readings than regular room lights.

HTH,
Richard

Hi all,
I know there's several classic country music stations in TuneIn radio, however,
is there a specific decade country music station? For example, like 1980s
country 1970s country et cetera.
Thanks, Shane.

Re: DirecTV app problem

2012-10-28 Thread Kevin Barry

Mine still works fine.
I dont' know what to suggest as this is a one-way stream going
directly from the DTV website over the satellite link to your DVR.

Hi there,

Perhaps someone has some information they can give me.

problem and that the program I wanted to record couldn't be
scheduled. It didn't give me any more information regarding the
problem, so I'd have no idea what to do to fix it. Does anyone know
what could be wrong or what I could do? Nothing changed with my

Audible, Read2Go, and Learning Ally Question

2012-10-28 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have put these three apps onto my phone. My question: I have books from
these three organizations already on my hard drive, and I do know about
copying folders to the automatically add to ITunes folder. So, can I use the
books I already have on my hard drive, or must I redownload them with the apps

proper app to read a given book?

Thanks in advance for any information.

RE: Audible, Read2Go, and Learning Ally Question

2012-10-28 Thread Richard Turner
You cannot use the automatically add to iTunes with Bookshare or Learning
Ally, I'm not sure about Audible, but it would be worth a try.
With Bookshare, you may find it faster and easier to just down load them
into the app.

With Learning Ally, you can use the file share feature of iTunes to move the
zipped book to your iPhone, but depending on how many books that is, again,
you may be better off down loading them into the app from your Learning Ally
Bookshelf, but that can be rather lengthy.

For future down loads from Audible, you can set the audible Manager to
automatically add them to iTunes.

HTH,
Richard

using iphone and braille display for reading text without having to change pages

2012-10-28 Thread Cheryl Ann Homiak

Today I took my iPhone and braille display to try to sing with everybody
and follow along in the Scripture passages at church. I had typed
everything onto
my computer and sent it to Pages on my iPhone. It worked reasonably well.
The only problem I had was that sometimes I would change pages and either
I would have blank display for a while or the right page didn't come up. I
am not using sppeech for this, just my iPhone and Refreshabraille 18. Is
there an app I can use or a way that I can use pages so that I'm not
having to change pages. Usually it seems that about 3 of my pages show up
on the screen or at least can be panned on my display. Then I have to
scroll using 3456chord and 1456-chord. If another page doesn't come up
pretty quickly, I'm left behind with only an 18-cell braille disply. Is
there an app that will let me just keep panning from one end of a file to
the other? I did like that I could try to go to different pages in case
something happened out of sequence but I don't like being stuck trying to
get the display to show the next page. I need to be able to just keep
panning from beginning to end of the file without having to do a scroll
command. Would Notes or Plaintext work for this; I know there have been
issues using Notes for longer files but would that matter as much since
I'm muting speech? If I can get this perfected it will save me from having
to carry around a backpack with a song notebook and a couple of Bible
volumes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: VOCwKeyer is out!

2012-10-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tess, Katey and others,

It seems that on a regular bases somebody will always post a message about
an app and simply mention some obscure app name and then 5 people ask what
it is. Yes, it is easy to look it up and especially with a name like
Vocwkeyer a google search will give you the information you want in the
first search result and without even going into the details. This took me
all of 8 seconds or so, but of course on the other hand if somebody posts
about an app and you know people will probably ask and maybe some are just
not very good at doing searches, why not just at least put a brief
description if not copy and paste the app store description. For example, it
could have been Vocwkeyer is out - now enter text on your iOS device using
morse code. Anyhow, for those who couldn't find it or didn't find the time
to find it, here is the description:

VoCwKeyer
Do you know the Morse Code or do you like to learn it? Do you get boring to
use the virtual keyboard on you mobile device? Would you like to have fun
typing
in CW and get rid in the same time to waste minutes over an untouchable
keyboard? Well, we think our app feet you and your needs!
With an extreme sharp and professional keyer under your fingers, one pad for
dash and the other for dots. Voiceover is totally supported by the app and,
upon your choice will read or not the character you've typed. The text you
produce is readable, editable in a field and it could be automatically send
to sms/iMessage App, to Mail or to the system clipboard from which you can
paste anywhere you like. You're going to have a complete control over the
speed
in Word per Minutes, the CW audio feedback in kHz, and the Character/Word
separator time in milliseconds. Moreover you may use the Iambic mode.
The App provides also a special characters to give commands directly in
Morse code, like Copy this text into the clipboard and opens the SMS app.
Isn't it great?

As for whether it's great depends on you, I don't think it's so great, but
it's probably fun for those who know morse code. But even if you do and are
pretty quick at it, I don't think it would beat Fleksy in speed let alone
SIRI/dicatation where it's possible to use it. I personally find that most
of the time I can use SIRI and often a quick reply to an email is short,
text messages are short by nature and especially for these short bits of
text dictation is hard to beat.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Audible, Read2Go, and Learning Ally Question

2012-10-28 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello,

I'm quite sure you can add Bookshare books on our computer to rEad2Go, but you
must zip each into a folder first. If your Audible books are in iTunes and on
your phone, you can tell the iTunes app to access your iPod library to play
them. Just be sure to add the Bookshare and Learning Ally books to the correct
app, and you'll be fine.

Best,
Anna

Jabra extreme to connect my two phones and the Plantronics voyage uc to

music when double-tapping

2012-10-28 Thread don bishop

Hi,

Is there a setting somewhere which will keep music from playing even if
you don't have a music app opened? Quite often when on the home screen
or sometimes even in another app, music will start to play and I have to
double-tap to stop it.

I like music, but when I want it please!

What's really odd is that no music app shows up in the task switcher.

I have the apple music app of course, but also have muxica.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Don

Re: Audible, Read2Go, and Learning Ally Question

2012-10-28 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Until this point, I have been using my Victor Reader Stream to read audible
books. I can not find anywhere in this download manager that says add them to
ITunes, it adds them either to windows media player, or a desktop player. If
you know how to get it to add to ITunes, please let me know. I think there is
a separate download manager for ITunes, but I can't find it now. When I get a
router, I will just use the apps themselves to download books, I wanted to
make sure I was going to keep this phone before buying a router.

You cannot use the automatically add to iTunes with Bookshare or Learning
Ally, I'm not sure about Audible, but it would be worth a try.
With Bookshare, you may find it faster and easier to just down load them into
the app.

With Learning Ally, you can use the file share feature of iTunes to move the
zipped book to your iPhone, but depending on how many books that is, again, you
may be better off down loading them into the app from your Learning Ally
Bookshelf, but that can be rather lengthy.

For future down loads from Audible, you can set the audible Manager to
automatically add them to iTunes.

  Richard

Some commands for selecting with bt keyboard

2012-10-28 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello,
I am sure one could find some archived posts about keyboard shortucts but here
are a few that come to mind off the top of my head.
I will name navigation commands and adding shift to these will select the
coresponding text.
Right/left arrow moves one character.
Up/down arrow moves by line.
Option +right/left moves by words. Not sure what option+up and down arrow does.
Maybe Paragraphs?

Command +left/right moves to beginning or end of line.
Command +up/down moves to top or end of text.

Hope this helps,

Ioana

I figured out the keyboard way as well. What I did is misspelled a word and
moved my cursor behind the first letter of the word and went to edit. Then I
press VO space on select. Last I VO right arrowed over to replace and VO
spaced on the correction. Hope this helps someone.

Re: ibooks question

2012-10-28 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

The Search button near the top right of the screen will do both. You can type
in either a search term or page number. Another way to move to a page is using
the Page Switcher at the bottom of the screen. Double-tap and hold, and then
slide your finger left or right. If you slide left, you move back in the book,
while you move forward if you slide right. The speed with which you move your
finger determines how far you'll move in the book.

HTH,
Anna

Hi Carol, there is a Morse table within the option dialogue, at the very bottom. You may also tap the characters in order to play
them in Morse code.

To use the app, just try to play with its parameters, to start, I suggest these
ones:

WPM = 10, char separator time = 200, word separator time = 1000, Herz = 960,
Iambic mode = off, and echo = words.

Bye.

RE: Audible, Read2Go, and Learning Ally Question

2012-10-28 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
I found these instructions which are as clear as I could have made them.
This is for the PC:
When you install the Audible Manager software, Audible Download Manager will
install as well. If you already have Audible Manager installed and want your
Audible content to import in to iTunes after download you can configure
Audible Download Manager.

Step 1: Launch Audible Download Manager by selecting your Windows Start Menu
All Programs AudibleManager Audible Download Manager.

Step 2: Once Audible Download Manager launches select General Settings.

 Audible Download Manager

Step 3: Place a check mark next to iTunes and select Save Settings.

 General Settings

-Import-6606.png

Note: You can change the location of where your Audible files will be saved
to after the download is complete by selecting Change Location.

Note: In addition this will only import Audible content in to iTunes
automatically for the Audible content you download after changing the
settings. Any Audible content that you have downloaded to your computer
previously will not automatically import in to iTunes. You will have to
manually import this content in to iTunes. For instructions on doing this

Until this point, I have been using my Victor Reader Stream to read audible
books. I can not find anywhere in this download manager that says add them
to ITunes, it adds them either to windows media player, or a desktop player.
If you know how to get it to add to ITunes, please let me know. I think
there is a separate download manager for ITunes, but I can't find it now.
When I get a router, I will just use the apps themselves to download books,
I wanted to make sure I was going to keep this phone before buying a router.

Richard

I have put these three apps onto my phone. My question: I have books from
these three organizations already on my hard drive, and I do know about
copying folders to the automatically add to ITunes folder. So, can I use
the books I already have on my hard drive, or must I redownload them with
the apps themselves? If I can use them, will I be able to tell my phone to
use the proper app to read a given book?

Thanks in advance for any information.

2012-10-28 Thread DJ
Kevin,

Thank you so very much for your rood sarcasm. I was hoping that someone
would be so kind as to respond as you did and that just made my day. You
were a wonderful help to me and all others on the list who might have been
wondering the same thing and for whatever reason couldn't seem to pull it up
on the App Store. I hope your helpfulness continues in such a great manner
as that kind of response will only encourage folks to appreciate your
insightful input that much more. You are such an asset to the list.

my keyboard not appearing when it's time to type

2012-10-28 Thread Candy

Hello everyone,
I have been having a problem. I wanted to post come comments, and do different
things that involved texting today. Quite a few times, my keyboard would not
appear on the screen, nor would the dictate button for siri. Yesterday my
friends put a new otter box case on for me. I don't know, if maybe, they
disturbed something, but, I'm just wondering how I can make my screen appear.
I have a blue tooth keyboard, and I could type the message on it, but not
keyboard on the screen. The only way I was able to fix it was to turn the
phone off, but, it happened again soon after.

Re: List Recorder and multitasking.

2012-10-28 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Gabriel,

If I understand correctly you want to recorde your voice while using a
app on your iPad. You are trying to create a podcast on how to use a app and
also record this on the same device. This doesn't seem possible right now with
List Recorder. I tried it with the built in voice memos app and that does
work. The quality is not great but it does work on my iphone. You could try
that on your ipad.

Re: my keyboard not appearing when it's time to type

2012-10-28 Thread Dan
Hello,
The problem is your external keyboard.
When you type on the bluetooth keyboard, the screen's keyboard is shut off.
You can correct this problem is a few different ways.
1. Turn off the vluetooth keyboard and your problem will go away.
2. If you are using an apple keyboard for example, you can just hit the upper
right most key. This will let you go back to the screen's keyboard.

Thanks for this. Looks like a robust program. I went into the main screen and

Hello,
No problem. We can all help each other on this list. I know that others have
answered questions or concerns that I've had in the past.
This sure is a fantastic list and I for one really appreciates its beaing here.

When you type on the bluetooth keyboard, the screen's keyboard is shut off.
You can correct this problem is a few different ways.
 1. Turn off the vluetooth keyboard and your problem will go away.
 2. If you are using an apple keyboard for example, you can just hit the
upper right most key. This will let you go back to the screen's keyboard.

The most efficient way to read from iBooks with a braille Display?

2012-10-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I am reading with iBooks for the first time with my Refreshabraille 18. Can
somebody tell me the most efficient way to do this with speech turned off or
direct me to an explanation of this online. I've been reading to the page
chooser and pressing the joystick down to go to the next page but that means I
then have to go left to get to the beginning of the page. Is there a faster way
to change pages and be right at the beginning of the next page. With only 18
cells, though I am very thankful for having braille at all, I would like to
save myself the effort and my Refreshabraille the wear and tear of repeated
panning. Also, while I know that we can scroll to read audibly, is there any
way to scroll using braille. I'm thinking that scrolling as I am used to it
with just the audio would go too fast and leave me with little control of my
reading speed. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi

Sieghard,

Thanks for this. Looks like a robust program. I went into the main screen and
looked also at the help file. So far, it's totally accessible with all buttons
labeled appropriately. In the description, I did note that supported operating
systems did not reference Mountain Lion, so I hope that won't be a problem.
Thanks again.

RE: Text Editing on iOS

2012-10-28 Thread Joe
Hi Rob,

I guess it is kind of contradicting to want plain text and then request
bold, etc. LOL I'm about to start taking an hour and a half commute each way
to work, and I'd like to find a productive means of spending my three hours
on the road. Editing documents is one way, and while I understand there is
currently no means of editing Doc or DOCX files, I'd like to see about the
next best alternative. Esther's message earlier about an RTF editor was
promising, but I'd prefer not have to get an iPad just to accomplish some
productive document editing. At minimum, I'd like an efficient means of
manipulating blocks of text from within the same file or between two files.

Thanks all for any additional thoughts.

Hello,

As a follow-up to the recent thread on RTF editors that synchronize with
Dropbox, do any of the plain text apps allow for at least some minimal
formatting such as bold, underline, tab positions, etc.?

Also, what is the text selection process with a bluetooth keyboard? I have
an Apple keyboard, and I'd like to be able to select blocks of text. Am I
correct that this works with a combination of arrow keys and the Command
key?

Thanks for any information.

When the page chooser at the bottom has focus, you can now quickly flick

Re: using iphone and braille display for reading text without having to change pages

2012-10-28 Thread Cheryl Ann Homiak

Well, after exploring my question this afternoon, i've decided to use the
Notes app next week. Everything loaded in there reads straight through
without the need to scroll pages and either the issue with vo doing
strange things when a note gets too long doesn't happen when speech is
turned off or my file isn't long enough to cause a problem.

 On Sun, 28 Oct
2012, Cheryl Ann Homiak wrote:

Today I took my iPhone and braille display to try to sing with everybody and
follow along in the Scripture passages at church. I had typed everything onto
my computer and sent it to Pages on my iPhone. It worked reasonably well. The
only problem I had was that sometimes I would change pages and either I would
have blank display for a while or the right page didn't come up. I am not
using sppeech for this, just my iPhone and Refreshabraille 18. Is there an
app I can use or a way that I can use pages so that I'm not having to change
pages. Usually it seems that about 3 of my pages show up on the screen or at
least can be panned on my display. Then I have to scroll using 3456chord and
1456-chord. If another page doesn't come up pretty quickly, I'm left behind
with only an 18-cell braille disply. Is there an app that will let me just
keep panning from one end of a file to the other? I did like that I could try
to go to different pages in case something happened out of sequence but I
don't like being stuck trying to get the display to show the next page. I
need to be able to just keep panning from beginning to end of the file
without having to do a scroll command. Would Notes or Plaintext work for
this; I know there have been issues using Notes for longer files but would
that matter as much since I'm muting speech? If I can get this perfected it
will save me from having to carry around a backpack with a song notebook and
a couple of Bible volumes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: using iphone and braille display for reading text without having to change pages

2012-10-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hi Mary.

Good question.
I will do a combination of typing directly into a file on my computer and
copying and pasting. For my test this afternoon, the file had already been put
into iTunes and from there into Pages and I simply copied and pasted all the
text into Notes. I can use this round-about method for everything, first
sending the file to iTunes so that it goes to Pages and then copying and
pasting into Notes or I could email it and copy and paste from the email into
Notes. I don't think i can open an attachment in Notes so it has to be the text
I copy and paste.

Hi Cheryl,

When you read past the last line, pan left and press O-Chord. I use a Focus 40

be a similar keystroke on the RefreshaBraille. But even without that, you
should end up at the top of the next page.

screen before I have to scroll. If I go all the way past the test to where it
says txt field, i can pan left once and in this case do chord-1456 and I not
only scroll to the next page but also I have a new three pages (for intance 4,
5 and 6) and don't have to scroll again until I have done those pages. The only
difference is that in iBooks I am dealing with the scrool left and right
controls while in the Pages app I am dealing with the scroll up and down
controls. The key in both cases is to go past the end of the text field and pan
left once before scrolling.

Thanks.

When you read past the last line, pan left and press O-Chord. I use a Focus

may be a similar keystroke on the RefreshaBraille. But even without that, you
should end up at the top of the next page.

I then have to go left to get to the beginning of the page. Is there a
faster way to change pages and be right at the beginning of the next page.
With only 18 cells, though I am very thankful for having braille at all, I
would like to save myself the effort and my Refreshabraille the wear and
tear of repeated panning. Also, while I know that we can scroll to read
audibly, is there any way to scroll using braille. I'm thinking that
scrolling as I am used to it with just the audio would go too fast and leave
me with little control of my reading speed. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: using iphone and braille display for reading text without having to change pages

2012-10-28 Thread Cheryl Ann Homiak

Because I also had a similar issue in iBooks with scrolling using the
braille display, which Anna told me how to solve by going to the end of
the text field, panning left once, and doing the scrolling chord, I find
that i can now also scroll reliably in the Pages app. In the case of the
Pages app, if i go past the end of my text to where it says txt field
and then pan left once and do the o chord, i am not only scrolled to
the next page but am scrolled so that the new page is the beginning page
on my screen and I then don't have to scroll again until I go through the
pages my display shows and then again pan left. So now I can either continue
doing my church music and Scriptures in Pages or do them in notes so that
I have a continuous file and don't have to scroll. I'll probably stick
with Pages as it gives me more control for skipping around to different
pages than Notes does.

Subject: Some commands for selecting with bt keyboard

 Hello,
I am sure one could find some archived posts about keyboard shortucts but
here are a few that come to mind off the top of my head.
I will name navigation commands and adding shift to these will select the
 coresponding text.
 Right/left arrow moves one character.
 Up/down arrow moves by line.
Option +right/left moves by words. Not sure what option+up and down arrow
 does. Maybe Paragraphs?

Command +left/right moves to beginning or end of line.
Command +up/down moves to top or end of text.

 Hope this helps,

 Ioana

How about using notes? You can do bold italic there and selecting and moving
text works fine with bt keyboard.

 Hi Rob,

I guess it is kind of contradicting to want plain text and then request
bold, etc. LOL I'm about to start taking an hour and a half commute each way

on the road.
