Raul, Thanks to you all; for the response. I've just posted some figures, I should have done it to start with, good point, alex. If anybody felt they could comment further, please do. The price of £380 is in pounds as I live in the UK. Electronics appear to be much more expensive this side of the pond. smile Andrew On 3 Nov 2012, at 00:46, Raul A. RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone
Hi Donald, Good for you to figure it out. Using USB hubs can definitely cause problems and while I use them too, if, for example, I upgrade my phone via iTunes I usually plug it in directly to the computer to avoid such issues. OK, now to music. I will give you the basic steps, give it a try and let me know if you need more help. First, connect your phone and go to it in the source list. 2. Tab until you hear music and press the space bar to check it. 3. Tab further until you hear Sync Music, check that as well. 4. Tab a couple more times and now you have 2 options: A. Sync All Music - I think that is what it says, it may be Sync Entire Library, but it's obvious. If you check this all the songs you have in iTunes will be synced. b. Sync selected genres, artists, albums or playlists. This is also descriptive and if you don't want your entire library on the phone because maybe it's too large or you just want selected music, then check this. 5. If you chose to sync selected music, now tab again and you will get to some list views for Genre, Artist, Album etc. Here you can down arrow through the list and press the space bar for each item you want to select. For example, if you are in the Genre list and you want Rock and Jazz just check those, if you want selected artists go into the artist list view and check the artists you want. All of this does, of course, assume your music is properly tagged with ID3 tags for genre, artist, album etc. 6. Once you are done tab until you find Apply and activate it. This will start the sync process and the selected music will sync to your phone. It's really a pretty simple process and you probably get the hang of it pretty quickly. If you buy music from iTunes and you want this to appear both in your iTunes library on the computer and the phone I recommend you go into Settings, General and Store on your phone and make sure the option to automatically download music is selected. You can do the same for apps and books. On the PC go to Edit, Preferences and find the Store tab. Here you can check the same items to automatically download. If you do this and, for example, buy a song or an album in iTunes on the PC, it will automatically download/sync to your iPhone, no need to do anything. The same is true if you buy something on your phone, it will automatically be downloaded on your PC the next time you open iTunes. RE: question for a friend where is the audomitley add to itunes folder? and also help with the i tunes stor and the f 6 key
Hi Mich, The automatically add to iTunes is a folder inside the iTunes Media folder. iTunes Media in turn is inside iTunes and it is typically in My Music. The iTunes Media folder has subfolders for all the different media types like Audio Books, Automatically add to iTunes, Mobile Applications (that's where all you rapps are saved), Music, Movies, TV Shows, Ringtones etc. Not sure about the F6 key, it typically moves you from the soruce list to list views etc. Sometimes when iTunes is busy, e.g. you just started downloading something, it may not work right away. Re: Advice on purchasing iPhone 4s
When users were first getting their iPhone 5s, the commono pinion seemed to bei n favour of the more solid - or apparently so - constructiono f the 4s, the speed difference was there but not that great and it did all we need to do with it. So if there's enough to save, it has to be worth saving. In the uK, the 4s is down to Ł449 against the 5's Ł529. They even offered me a 4 model for about Ł359 or something like that. Remember, the one you mention is almost certainly 2nd hand, that takes the price down almost as quickly as scratches and blemishes. Re: question for a friend where is the audomitley add to itunes folder? and also help with the i tunes stor and the f 6 key
In addition to what Seighart told you, a tip is to make a shortcut to that automatically add to iTunes folder on your desktop. I generally purchase music from Amazon, and this may be overkill, but I first have it download into an Amazon folder within my music and then I move that to the automatically add folder. I just like the comfort/safety of that backup. Eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I've noticed something strange with regard to screen orientation detection and I'm not sure if it's a possible defect, or it's just that way. I'm used to the iPhone so maybe iPads are a little different. I'm finding that the mini does not detect the proper screen orientation when simply turning the device to either portrait or landscape mode. In order for the orientation to be detected, I have to first turn the device, then tilt it forward. If I don't tilt the Mini forward, it stays in the orientation it was in previously. Have any other Mini owners noticed anything like this? If not, I may have to take a trip down to the Apple store and see what's up. Also, how are Mini owners typing on the device, by using thumbs or some other method not including Fleksy as I haven't gotten it installed yet. I'm so used to my 4s and typing on it by just using a few fingers on my right hand that I'm finding the Mini a little harder to get used to. I'd appreciate any tips on this. I do love the device however and share the opinion that others have already expressed here on the list. The size is absolutely perfect, very easy to hold and use. Rick, Just having tried this on my iPad Mini, I can confirm that it works perfectly on mine, holding the iPad Mini perfectly upright on the x axis, I can turn it 90 degrees either way, and the iPad Mini will correctly, and very quickly announce that the screen has rotated. This keeping the iPad Mini very much perfectly upright. No tilt required at all. I am typing on it either with Fleksy which I own, or, with the same method you describe for use with your iPhone. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
OK, I'll try and cover all questions in one hit: None of the iPad's, inc the latest 4th generation and Mini have vibration functionality. The mini has containers as with the larger iPad versions. I personally can quite comfortably and easily hold the iPad Mini in portrait rotation, with the device between my thumb on one side and four remaining fingers the other side. Leaving one hand completely free to touch / type. It should be noted that this is how Phil Schillinger, Apple's product chap, demonstrated it during the press conference introducing iPad Mini. iBooks is another good case for the iPad, good point well made. The iPad Mini also has, and I'm not quite sure how important this is, but, also has stereo speakers for use when in portrait orientation, of course, would have made more sense in landscape, but, never mind. I think my wife best summed up the iPad Mini with the following comment. We currently own two iPad's, both 3rd generation, bought in March. I was thinking of getting a third new one this time, as our children use them a lot too. When I showed her the Mini her response was, oh, yes, that looks nice, I assume I'll be getting one as well? To me the iPod Touch makes no sense at all, I already have an iPhone. So I've bought and used happily the iPad1, 2 and most recently the ipad3. I have just taken delivery of the iPad Mini and will also be receiving the iPad4 to compare, however, already am pretty much sold on the form factor of the Mini. Its just the right set of compromising for me. not to small to make it pointless, not to large to make it heavy and unpleasant to carry around, but, enough screen to make browsing that bit easier than on the iPhone, and, not a battery drain on the iPhone at the same time. Then there's the point of all three of the papers I read daily are all only available as full editions when viewed using the iPad App. So this is a spot on size for me, portable, light weight, surprisingly so, thin, and just right. In the end it completely comes down to whether you can afford to buy a second device and find it useful to have a second device. One positive point is that I wouldn't have to charge my iPhone as often because when I am at home I could use an iPod Touch, iPad or iPad Mini to listen to music or a book or use apps. Some also find the large screen of an iPad useful and with the iPad Mini being siginificantly larger than an iPod Touch but noticeably smaller than the 10 inch iPad, it's a good compromise. This from a none tech embracing sort, said it all to me. One positive point is that I wouldn't have to charge my iPhone as often because when I am at home I could use an iPod Touch, iPad or iPad Mini to listen to music or a book or use apps. RE: Having Problem with dialing international numbers.
Hello Mária, OK, just had to figure out how to do this when you use the regular Keypad in the Phone App, but here is how you do the + in both situations (when adding a contact and when dialing a number on the keypad): If you are adding a contact it's easy. Once you are in one of the phone number fields, a telephone style DialPad shows up instead of the normal virtual keyboard. Only difference is that to the left and right of the 0 you don't have the Star and Pound, respectively, but a Shift key to the left of the 0 and the delete key to the right of the 0. If you want to put a + as the first character, just touch the Shift Key (you may have to double tap or split tap on it if you are still using iOS 5). Now the 0 to the right of it turns into a +, just touch it and the + is inserted into the field, now type your country code. When you are in the Keypad just to dial a number once you can, of course dial 011 followed by the country code, at least here in North America it is 011, I think in Europe in most countries you would just dial 00 followed by the country code, e.g. 001 for Canada/the US, 0049 for Germany, 0044 for the UK etc. If you want to dial the +, you can turn the 0 into a + in the same way you would bring up accented characters on the keyboard. Here is how: 1. Touch the 0 and then touch the screen with another finger, basically, do a split-tap. This will prevent the 0 being inserted/dialed as soon as you lift your finger. 2. Lift your finger after you touch the screen with a second finger. 3. Do a double tap and hold. You can do this anywhere since focus is still on the 0. You will hear the DialTone play as long as you hold down, hold maybe for a second or so and lift. If you check the Phone Number field at the top it should now have a + in it. Keep in mind that Voiceover does not seem to announce the +, but if you hold for a second or so it will be inserted. Give this a try and let me know if it works. If dialing 00 and the country code works for dialing directly I think that is easier than to do the split tap on the 0, then a double tap and hold. Re: Having Problem with dialing international numbers.
Where you dialing from? I'm sure you can do it all with numbers; usually starting with 0 - From the US to dial UK, 01144, followed by 10 of their digits; never include our leading 0, that is for internal use only. But as far as I know, and given this used to be done with old phones that had none of this digital stuff; it had to be; so you just need the local number for dialing international, then the country code, then the full number for the individual in that country. RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone
Thanks, Sieghard. This is very helpful to me, too. One other question. I have a folder of ripped CD's in mp3 format on my PC. How do I get this in to iTunes, or get iTunes to import from it? hanks in advance. Keith -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2012 1:44 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone Hi Donald, Good for you to figure it out. The idea of a smartphone app is to remotely monitor and control the panel, not to control it on site. HoneyWell was one previous suggestion. I cannot for the life of me think of the other that was something like Vivient or something similar. Check spelling. At the moment I'm leaning toward FrontPoint Security. Read2Go Braille Question
Hi List, When you are reading a book in Read2Go with speech, you have to touch the middle of the screen to resume reading from your last position. If you touch one of the buttons at the top then reading begins from the beginning of the section instead. Does anyone know how to accomplish this with a braille display? That is, touching midscreen in order to resume reading from the last position. Thanks for any tips. Marc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Calendar Date Bug
Hi listers, I have noticed that the calendar when in list mode will sometimes give the wrong dates in the heading that indicates each date. When it works right, moving down by heading will move through each day that has calendar events. When this bug appears, dates are out of whack. Has anyone else experienced this and/or come across a solution. If I reset to Day view and then back to List view it will sometimes fix the problem. Thanks for any suggestions. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
First, thank you for the replies about the lackof vibration in the new iPads. I was sure that was the case, but thought I'd double check. As for the discussion about the iPad mini, I wasn't aware there were iBooks available only on the iPad. That seems rather silly to me. Sure, the iPad has a bigger screen, but what's the point of making content like that not available on the iPhone/iPod? Even if there are animated things in some of the material, I'd think an iPhone 4s or 5 could handle that easily enough. My iPod Touch 5th generation saga
I had mentioned the problem I was having with my new iPod Touch 5th Gen. It was shutting down at 12%. I had gone through everything that the suport folks at Apple had asked me to do when they agreed that it was time for a replacement. I went to the Apple store yesterday, and the genius insisted that if he did a complete reinstall of the firmware that the problem would be fixed. So, I let him do that. I took it home and did not restore my data on it, I just ran Safari and waited until I got the battery down to 12 percent again. Would you believe it, it shut down again, just like I knew it would. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I called the store and let them know that I was really PO'D. They assured me that if I came back down today they would replace it with the same color, blue. I got there this morning, and after having to go through the entire story again, the person helping me went back to talk with the tech folks. She came with the news that they did not have any 64 GB touches in the store, so they would have to order one. I repeated that I was told last evening that one would be set aside for me. She double checked. No, they did not have any in the store, but they had a couple off site. Off site means they have inventory in other stores in the mall. They did not have blue, but they did have the slate gray. I said that would be fine. I then gave her the loop that matches the blue one. She came back a few minutes later with the new one in box. That is the beginning of the place where my opinion of Apple began to recover. I only had the touch itself, no cable or ear pods to return. I was now getting an entire new box with ear pods and cable. That would be about a $50 value. Then she handed me $50 in cash because I had gone through so much trouble and they did not have my color. Once again, polite persistence pays off. I am now waiting for the new o to finish restoring from my backup. When I get the Email asking about how satisfied I am with today's visit to the store, I will give her much higher marks than I gave the guy yesterday. I just hope this one does not end up doing the same thing. Thanks for reading, Richard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. subscribing and unsubscribing
Hi all, I saved the note that Raul sent out a few weeks ago regarding how to sub and unsub. I was trying to get on a different googlegroups list and used those instructions as a template i.e. send a blank message to listname+subscr...@googlegroups.com and all I get back is an error message stating that the domain doesn't exist. Say what? I also got exactly nowhere with the actual web interface. Can't get switched back to the old one and the new one doesn't work for me. I have just taken delivery of the iPad Mini and will also be receiving the iPad4 to compare, however, already am pretty much sold on the form factor of the Mini. Its just the right set of compromising for me. not to small to make it pointless, not to large to make it heavy and unpleasant to carry around, but, enough screen to make browsing that bit easier than on the iPhone, and, not a battery drain on the iPhone at the same time. Re: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Scott, Its not about processor power, its all about the layout area, people like their books to look nice, to be presented as they desired them to look. There's just no way that a lot of books look right, or certainly how the author intended, when displayed on a 3.5in / 4in screen. so the issue is not technological, its pure and simple realostaste. Hi all. I am needing to find music in my iPhone, by more than one feature. For example I need to find music of 2 singers. Normally I type in the search field, in songs, the name of the singer that I am looking for, and later I play the results. But now I am trying to find 2 singers, not just one. How can I tell to the search field, that find 2 singers, instead one? Thanks Pablo -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions
Hi Rob, Yes, there is a big price difference between an iPad Mini and a Nexus 7 inch tablet, but it is not exactly like comparing Apples to Apples pun intended. The iPad Mini screen in area is a third larger even though on the diagonal it's only 7 inches to 7.9 inches, this is one thing they really emphasized during the keynote. On the other hand the Nexus has a better screen resolution since the iPad Mini is only 1024 by 768. I strongly believe, however, that Apple will release an updated iPad Mini within 6 or so months which will have a retina screen. Of course this is just a prediction, but given the fact that they updated the big iPad twice this year and that now all their iDevices except for the iPad 2 which is still around and the iPad Mini are retina including their 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pros I wouldn't be surprised if that was coming fairly soon. Lastly, there is of course that little issue of accessibility for everybody on this list and while you can buy an Android tablet for a lot less, you can also get a bunch of Android phones for a lot less, but I still wouldn't want to go back to the 18th accessibility century. OK, I know some people disagree with that, so please do so off-list. Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone
Hi Keith, First, I'd make sure all these ripped songs are properly tagged with artist, album, song title etc. It really gets messy in iTunes if that is not the case. OK, if they are, you could either copy all these files into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder which on a PC is in My Music, iTunes, iTunes Media. Make sure iTunes is closed when you do that and then open it. It should see all the files in that folder and automatically move them into the Music folder. You could also just move the entire folder into the iTunes Media folder and call it, for example, Ripped Music. Then open iTunes, go to File and Add Folder to library. Now browse to the Ripped CD folder, and click on Select. Depending on how much is in it the import process may take a while, but you will hear that tri-tone iTunes makes when it's done doing stuff and the music should now show up in your music library. Do you use the Column browser in iTunes? I find it the easiest way to find and play music I want. Go to the View menu, then arrow down to Column Browser which is a submenu. Arrow right to open it and then check Genre, Artist, Albums and I also check the Group Compilations. Now if you tab past your list view of all your music you get to pull-down lists for Genre, Artist and Album. If, for example, you select Rock as the Genre and then tab to artists, you only see artists who are in the genre. Then select, for example, Dire Straits and tab to Albums and if you have 5 Dire Straits Albums those are the only ones you see. Go back to your music library list view and you only see all the songs from those 5 albums, select one particular album and you only see the songs from that album. Hi, When you use VoiceOver to read with Read2Go, you have to choose to read by page or by section. If you choose section, it reads continuously during each chapter, so it's not too annoying - only a problem if the chapters are very short. Its just the right set of compromising for me… not to small to make it pointless, not to large to make it heavy and unpleasant to carry around, but, enough screen to make browsing that bit easier than on the iPhone, and, not a battery drain on the iPhone at the same time. Then there's the point of all three of the papers I read daily are all only available as full editions when viewed using the iPad App. So this is a spot on size for me, portable, light weight, surprisingly so, thin, and just right. RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone
Thanks very much, Sieghard. Your help / instruction on this has been amazing. I'm confident I can make this happen with the knowledge you have imparted in your several emails today on this topic. I have a fair number of older CDs ripped that are not well-tagged; they were ripped probably 7 to 10 years ago, and other than my putting in the album name at that time, the title, tracks artist, and genre fields are largely untagged.. I'll be careful not to put them in iTunes. Thanks for the warning. Best, Keith -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2012 3:32 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Syncing music; was: I no longer see my iphone in itunes when I connect the phone Hi Keith, First, I'd make sure all these ripped songs are properly tagged with artist, album, song title etc. Using older and current iPhones on a cruise
Greetings all. I will be going on a cruise a week from tomorrow and had some questions about hopefully using my iPhone on the cruise ship. First off, realizing that cruise ship Internet cafe prices are expensive, is it possible to use one's iPhone in airplane mode on the ship when in international waters? I called the cruise company and they said no, since I'm sure they would rather that I drop money in the Net cafe rather than using my device's battery. Second, when in the United States territories, is it possible to opt out of the ship's wireless network and use my ATT data plan? I will be traveling from Galveston, TX to Key West, Florida, for the first leg of the trip. Then I go out of the country to the Bahamas. Since we won't get to Florida unil day 3 of the trip, I was hoping that I could use my data plan to stream some football games on Sunday instead of paying the ship fees. I suppose what I'm asking is if the area from Texas to Florida is covered in the ATT network? I don't imagine myself doing a lot of streaming, but just looking for another option besides the ship's costly network. Finally, my soon to be wife will be adopting my old iPhone 4. Since I have moved my ATT service from the 4 to the 5, the iPhone 4 isn't connected to a network. However, it still has the voice memos app and the camera apps for capturing those special moments. Might it be possible for us to use the old iPhone in order to take pictures and make some recordings of our time on the cruise? The only online connectivity I could imagine would be to backup the photos to iCloud, but we won't be able to do that until we get back home to Texas anyway. Any thoughts on any of this would be most appreciated. \ Regards, Wayne -- Follow me on Twitter at: www.twitter.com/wcmerritt My websites: www.wayneism.com www.whitecaneday.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Well, of course you can use your phone in air plane mode. Are you asking if there's a way to access the wifi on the cruise ship, i.e. going into airplane mode but turning on wifi? I don't know, but I'd look into seeing if the cruise ship offers wifi. It may not be free though. Maybe you can check on their web site. Just wondering. Thanks. God bless! Paula Jordan and Babe -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. a good blu tooth ear piece for the IPhone
Hi I am using an I Phone 4. I am threw Verizon wireless. Can you recommended for me a good ear piece that I can get that will be good for use with my I Phone? That will give me access to all of voice over and that will make it easy to answer and end calls when using it? Also one that will give me the best voice clarity during A call? I am looking at the Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset. What do you all think of this headset? Thank you all and I will look forward to reading your responses on this. -- Casey -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
