Re: Deleting podcasts and Music from the iPhone
Hi, I would appreciate a podcast on this, and since play lists are mentioned here could you please make one on playlists? How they work, creating, etc. Thank you very much. If you use Windows this can sometimes be called a tab or radio button. Press space to select that. Now as you tab, you will get to the music syncing section. If you want to just remove all music or podcasts from the iPhone you can choose to not sync music. That will get rid of everything. However if you want to just erase what's on there and later add something else, or if you want to remove something and add something else in the next sync, then you will need to keep tabbing to the table of playlists, albums, artists and then check or uncheck with the space bar which ones you want and which ones you don't want. On a personal note, checking music by artists and songs has always been very tedious for me because I have well over 100 thousand audio tracks in my library. So, what I do instead is create playlists of music I want. I have one for example called Raul 80s. Then to that list I add or remove what I want and just tell the iPhone to sync that playlist. This way as I add or remove songs to and from the playlists I am syncing, I don't have to go pick and choose from this grid. Hope that makes sense. It sounds complicated, but is really not once you've done it. I have to say that as much as I can't stand iTunes, it really does a good job at syncing things like music and apps once you learn it. -- Raul A. Gallegos Why is abbreviated such a long word? Re: Ubi Disk
I think unibdisk is superceded by the Phone drive app now; works in a similar manner, but the latter seems to do more. You can do a wifi link with your pc so long as they're on the same router, in which case, you connect using the browser in http or ftp mode. Like I said before, Windows users can map network drive to it using the ftp method. But Phone drive also allows you to do a direct device to device connect on wifi or BT. So ubidisk is good for what it did then, but more can be done now with similar prodcts and phone drivei n particular as it was a recent thread. My feelings about a total GPS solution for the blind - Was Re: Navigon on sale today only
Hello Grant, and anyone else interested, my apologies for not responding sooner. The message slipped through the cracks and I just now found it again. The short answer to your question is yes. Meaning that for me, what I have works superbly and I don't feel like I'm lacking in what I have. Now, the long answer. I think it highly depends on what the user is expecting from an accessible GPS solution. I know the Sendero products well, and in fact, helped to develop the initial Sendero GPS user interface for the Braille Sense from HIMS when they started using Sendero. For me personally, using a combination of Navigon and Ariadne, or Waze and Ariadne, is enough. In the case of Ariadne, I get to know what street I'm on, the addresses I'm walking or driving by, the zip code, the direction I'm moving in, and the intersection when I get to it. Of course with an app like Navigon I have my turn by turn direction list. I can also of course use any other app of choice for this if I want. Mapquest, MotionX Drive, ETC. Even when I was working with Sendero to get the Braille Sense user interface and featureset working right, I didn't use all the features available unless I was testing them to make sure they work. For example, I don't need to always know if the intersection I'm coming up to is a t intersection, or if it dead ends. I don't need constant announcement of how close I am getting to the upcoming intersection. I don't always need the street name announced as I'm crossing it. All these are good features to have, but as I said at the beginning of this post, it depends on what the user wants. I feel that if the user wants the exact level of access and features found in the sendero products, and if the user wants this all available from one app so they don't have to switch, then they will be unsatisfied with what the iPhone currently offers. However if the user doesn't need all the extra features, and is ok with using at least 2 apps to get this level, then the current solutions I think are very nice. In fact, they are far more than what we used to have. Let's also consider the history. How long has Sendero been making GPS products, compared to how long have the blind had access to the iPhone. I personally feel that when Sendero comes out with their iPhone app, it will be a very nice thing and should offer people who need those extra features and maybe even more than what I've mentioned, to have a solution which will work for them. plus they will have the bonus of it all from one app, so there should be no switching. In the mean time, I can do what I need to do with what I have and I don't feel it is lacking for me. The other thing I want to mention, and I hate to, but I have to, is that there are some people who depend on GPS technology too much. I'm not knocking what's out there, because I think it's a great thing. However, let's all remember that when using any sort of GPS, always depend on your own orientation and mobility skills first. This is why I don't need to know if the intersection goes through or dead ends. However this might open up a debate and a can of GPS worms, and so I'll leave it at that. Hope this helped to answer your question. -- Raul A. Gallegos Too much of a good thing can be wonderful. - Mae West Home Page: http://raulgallegos.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/rau47 Facebook: http://facebook.com/rau47 On 11/23/2012 11:47 PM, Grant Hardy wrote: Hi Raul, I want to thank you for this objective comparison; it was very much appreciated. Would you say that between Navigon and Ariadne GPS, you could get functionality roughly equivalent to that offered on blindness-specific products such as the Breeze or Sendero GPS for the BrailleNote? I've always felt that the iPhone could rival any other GPS products if only I had the right app. But I wouldn't say that Ariadne on its own, in combination with either the old or the new Apple maps, really does it for me. Re: Temporarily Cancelling List Emails While On Vacation
Hi, you can set your group subscription to web only when you want to remain subscribed to the list, but don't want to get the emails in your inbox. Then set it back to individual or digest when you come back from wherever. Or, you can unsubscribe, and resubscribe. Doing the first method requires that you visit the group page from the link on every message here. The second can be done from web or from email. -- Raul A. Re: My feelings about a total GPS solution for the blind - Was Re: Navigon on sale today only
Though it may not be as applicable for everyone, don't forget about the built in Maps features of iOS 6, with the new iPhone 5 and other recent iPhones and iPod Touches, which offer voice guidance if VO is off, and a spoken list of directions if VO is on. The more I use Maps for GPS in my wife's car, the more I like it. I have found that by double tapping on an address in contacts, Maps automatically comes up with a choice of routes to take. All I have to do is choose a route, hit the route or start button, and then turn VO off for the spoken directions. Maps seems to offer the right amount of spoken announcements, not too much but not too little. When setting up the route you want to travel, you can switch between car, pedestrian or transit direction options. Jmt, Wayne On 11/27/12, Raul A. I know the Sendero products well, and in fact, helped to develop the initial Sendero GPS user interface for the Braille Sense from HIMS when they started using Sendero. For me personally, using a combination of Navigon and Ariadne, or Waze and Ariadne, is enough. I personally feel that when Sendero comes out with their iPhone app, it will be a very nice thing and should offer people who need those extra features and maybe even more than what I've mentioned, to have a solution which will work for them. plus they will have the bonus of it all from one app, so there should be no switching. Re: Sharing Calendar Appointment Info
Hi Brian, On a Mac, you can share a particular calendar such as your home calendar or one you create. You can also do this from the icloud.com website, but I don't know whether doing so is accessible. On the Mac, it was sort of accessible, but the process was tricky, and I don't remember the steps I followed to make it work, unfortunately. I don't know of a way to set it up on the iPHone. Great app for playing audio books-Bookmark
I found this app for reading audio books yesterday when browsing through the apps listed on the Applevis.com website. It is exactly what I wanted and well worth the $1.99. I tried playing some audio books in the music app but it did not even remember which track I was on and it was totally frustrating. I have Downcast for podcasts but I think it would take extra work to import the book files. This Bookmark app is exactly what I wanted for audio books. As soon as I installed it the audio books from my iTunes showed up in the list. Anyway, here is the app description from the Applevis.com website. By the way, there is a fantastic amount of great info on that site. I spent hours going through the app reviews and found numerous ones I downloaded. typing phone numbers from keyboards and braille displays
Hi, I was curious to see whether in iOS 6 it was possible to dial phone numbers by typing them on external keyboards and braille displays. I turned on my Focus 40 Blue, opened the phone app, and typed a number. It appeared in the phone number box. Then I tried with my Mac keyboard using Type2Phone, and nothing was typed in. I tried with an Apple bluetooth keyboard, and nothing was typed in. Then I tried again with my braille display and had no luck. I can't imagine what was different about the one time the braille display worked. Has anyone done this successfully with any device, and if so, how? Yes. When presented with the list of possible routes, you can swipe/flick between the different routes. When on a route, such as route 2, double tap it, then swipe/flick through that area of the screen to view the time it will take and other information. When you want to begin the selected route, double tap the start button that appears after the list of routes. If you have audiobooks in mp3 format, you will need to make sure that the media kind of the mp3 file is set to Audiobook for it to appear in this app. This is done via iTunes on your Mac or PC. You need to right click on the file in iTunes, then click on 'Get Info'. On the pop-up go to the Options tab and select Audiobook from the 'Media Kind' selector. You might also want to check the box to remember playback position, although this only matters if you are using the music app on your iDevice to play the file. I don't use a screen reader on my PC, so cannot advise on how you would do the above with one. Login or register to post comments #2Version 1.51 Submitted by AnonyMouse on 3 March 2012. This app still works great. I really highly recommend this app for those that listen to audio books from other source other than Audible. Some reason the built-in player that comes with your device will constanly forget where you lft off. So this app take care of that problem. Never forget where I left off. Very handy! One minor issue that I've noticed in the latest version is that when you flick through the list of audiobooks in your library, VoiceOver no longer recognizes or announces the progress indicator (where it tells you what percentage of a book you have already played). shop shop questions
When I use shopshop, I'm having difficulty moving from one shopping list to another one. I've tried swiping with 3 fingers to move back a page since the second list appears to be on page 2. That doesn't work, nor does a single finger flick up or down near where the page picker would normally be. Also, I'd like to delete items from the history, and although the edit prompt says you can, I can't find out how. I've tried going to the clear text prompt and double tapping that, but no luck. If anyone has any thoughts on either topic, I'd appreciate it. I'm also open to any other apps that are easier to use. I want to be able to write a grocery list or other shopping lists. Don't really need that history thing. I'm using an iPhone 4S running 6.01. Thanks in advance. God bless! RE: What was the fix for low phone volume after IOS6 upgrade?
I have a 4S. Of late, now that I am listening to music on my phone, I am very unhappy with the volume. iTunes tells me that my volume is at 100% when I am copying a CD. But it isn't loud enough. Re: Disappointing results with Prizmo
Hi, With all of us chiming in, we will all have our favorites in OCR apps. I have the most success with Say Tex. Here are some of my tips that help me. 1. Line the bottom edge of the document or envelope with the edge of the table. 2. Make sure that you have plenty of light and that you have your back to the source so it won't cast a shadow. 3. By using the phone upper edge, I estimate the center of the upper edge and place the right upper corner of the phone there. I then find the center of the page and place the right corner of the phone there making sure that it is parallel to the side edge. 5. With the app open, I tap where VO states take picture and lift it up gently. 6. Depending upon the app I am using, Priszmo may say Auto Focus or Say Text will vibrate and then automatically take the picture. However, when I use Prizmo, the results are not as good as Say Text. There has been much written on this group regarding tips and tricks on how to get a great scan with these OCR apps. I am not convinced that this is the best solution in comparison to a stand-alone scanner and OCR software on a computer. Check the archive for previous posts for using all of these OCR apps on the phone. HTH. Eileen -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Thanks, Raul. Can you expand a bit on how you use the 2 GPS in combination? Do you use both on one route, or sometimes one and sometimes another? I'd be curious how you use both simultaneously, or even how you decide when to use one or the other. Also, Waze is new to me; haven't heard that one before. Can you describe it a bit? It sounds like it's a substitute for Navigon at times. Thanks in advance. Keith -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Raul A. However this might open up a debate and a can of GPS worms, and so I'll leave it at that. reading vowels with macrons on a braille display
Hello, I finally figured out how to get vowels with macrons to display as dots 4-5-6 followed by the vowel on a braille display used with the iPhone. Turn on grade 2 by pressing G-chord. When grade 2 is off, I see dots 1-4-5-6 whenever there is supposed to be a vowel with a macron, but with Grade 2 on, the vowels appear correctly. I hope that helps. Re: My feelings about a total GPS solution for the blind - Was Re: Navigon on sale today only
I use Navigon or TomTom when I require complete directions to a place. Both apps can run in the background when a route is running, so you can also load Ariadne or one of the apps which displays nearby POIs if you wish. I usually just use Ariadne because it has a feature which automatically announces the updated address every 40 seconds or so. This is often all I need now that I have trained myself to navigate via street address rather than cross streets. One of my primary uses is on the bus. I have learned the nearby addresses for the stop I require. When the announced address gets close, I ring the bell and exit at my desired bus stop. In most cases, I no longer need to ask the bus driver for my stop to be announced. I also use Ariadne when looking for an address in an area that is familiar. With Ariadne, I just activate the app and activate the start monitor button. I can even activate Ariadne for a quick check of my current location and then close it again. This is really awesome. I was hoping the kindle app would be accessible, but it seems not to be. I'm glad to read that the nook is. I'll definitely try this out. Re: Sharing Calendar Appointment Info
Hi All, To share an iCloud calendar from the iPhone Launch the calendar app Locate the calendars button at the top left of the screen and double tap You are now on the screen that displays all calendars on you device Locate the calendar you wish to share then flick right to the more info button for that calendar and double tap You can now change the name of the calendar, share it with someone or change its color The share item is below the text field that displays the calendar name Double tap the share option and then enter the persons email that you would like to invite to share the calendar. Double tap the done button at the top right of the screen and an invitation to share your calendar will be sent to the person. When they accept the invite, you should receive a calendar alert on your device. Now when you add or change events, they can see these appointment in their calendar app. I should have mentioned, after sending the invite, you can double tap the persons name on the more info screen to manage the level of access they have to your calendar. The options are at this time, view and edit. Re: Nook App for IOS Devices Now Accessible
I downloaded this app, and was surprised to find that I already have a B and N account. I went to my Mac, bought a book from the under $5 category, and saw it available on my iPhone almost immediately. Reading is much like iBooks, and it uses the standard iPhone gestures. Kudos to Barnes and Noble...its about time. With this app,iBooks, and Read 2 Go, I have no reason for a Kindle app or device. I stick my tongue out at you Amazon! The app is even Voiceover aware, giving you navigational hints if Voiceover is running. You can read a book continuously, just like in Ibooks. The selection seems fantastic in the BN E-book store, and while purchasing a book cannot be done from within the app, it can certainly be done from the Mac or PC on the web. Now of coarse, the books in the $5 section is not the most current top 10 books, but they are definitely worth checking out. And no matter what, you can not beat at least downloading and trying out the book put up for free each Friday! Re: Nook App for IOS Devices Now Accessible
I wonder if it doesn't like the period in your email address though I wouldn't think that would be an issue. At least I think I heard a period in there. Actually, I have no idea and am reaching for straws here; hope you get to the bottom of it! I just went to the website and registered and bought a book and read some on my iPhone. I have a Kindle (the old one that they now call the kindle keyboard) and I do use it some and have found ways to do a few things with it. But hopefully this may be another development that will encourage Amazon to rethink their policy in this area. Does anybody know where to email BE to commend them? -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
