Re: accessing documents from the cloud on i-devices
Hi, The answer to this question depends on what service you've used to store it. If you can give us this information one of us will be able to give you a couple of possible solutions. Cheers, Ben. Re: accessing documents from the cloud on i-devices
This depends on the Cloud service you're using. Clouds like DropBox and Ubuntu One have their own apps which you can use to access documents stored in their clouds. Quite a few other apps will also let you work with documents stored in DropBox. There are also other Cloud providers out there. If you could explain which Cloud you're talking about and what you want to do with those documents, that would help. Aftershokz headphones and Siri commands.
Hi all, anyone with the aftershokz headphones and using them on a 4S, I need some advice on using it with Siri. So far they work great to listen to music and to answer phone calls. I run into trouble when trying to send a text message. When I send a text on my 4S using Siri, I usually do the following. Ask Siri to send a text to whom ever. Siri responds with what would you like to say to whom ever? I say the text and Siri ask if I would like to send and I say send. This does not work when using the Aftershokz headphones. I have to combine the first 2 commands into one and say the following. Send whomever a text with the message ofSiri responds with would you like to send the message and I then say send. I am wpondering why the 3 step command works without the headphones and doesn't with? Any suggestions? Thanks Jay -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Seeking Information On Operating Small Jawbone Jambox
I recently listened briefly to the Monster ClarityHD Bluetooth speaker. The sound was quite undistorted and ffairly loud. I believe it sells for about $70. Don't know how this sound quality compares to that of either the small or the large Jambox. Craig On 1/2/13, Steve pipeguy...@gmail.com wrote: Yes, Arnold. You do need to download the Jambox Updater software. It isn't real accessible unless they updated the program in the last three months or so. Some of the features like changing sound schemes you can't really do, but you can if you are a fluent screen-reader user, be able to upgrade the firmware, if they have new firmware out. I suspect since you Just purchased your Jambox, that it is probably up-to-date. In terms of the sound, yes the Bigger one has twice the sound output and sounds pretty similar to the Bose SoundLink. There are some tonal differences, but you can address those with a different EQ setting on the iPod/iPhone. The beauty of the Biggr and for that matter, the original Jambox, is that they have thought of accessibility. I don't have a short-lived patio parrty anymore because I now can tell the level of the battery charge, and pairing it to your device is a breeze. I've demoed the bigger Jambox to several people and just about all of them have purchased one of their own. I know that my nephew has had similar experiences at his place of employment, and a few of his coworkers have gotten one. The little one is nice for personal enjoyment, but if you want sound for a larger area with a much fuller sound, I'd opt for the Bigger Jambox. - Original Message - From: Rick Alfaro rick.alf...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2013 11:13 AM Subject: Re: Seeking Information On Operating Small Jawbone Jambox Arnold, If you purchased your JamBox from amazon and it specifically said either sold by amazon or fulfilled by amazon, you can easily return it. amazon has the betst return policy in the business. If the larger one sounds as good as I have read, and have heard from people I know who have heard it, it is worth the extra money. If I ever decide to buy anything else like this, I definitely want to hear it first. To me, this one sounds like something that should sell for $50 or so, not what I paid. One question neither of you addressed: Apparently, one can update the firmware in these devices. The slider on the side is the on/off switch. If sliding it up doesn’t do anything it means the battery must be completely dead and you should charge it overnight. The Micro USB charging port is below and the cables have a flattened side which makes it easy to plug them in because that flattened side has to be pointing away from you if the switch and plugs are on the right side. You correctly guessed that the round plug is the 3.5mm jack which you would use if you want to connect a non-bluetooth device. On the top the minus button is volume down and the plus button is volume up, the large round button will answer/hang up a call or give you battery level (spoken as “battery is just about full”, “battery is about half full” etc. If the Jambox has power it should talk when you turn it on and also say something like “Jambox is in pairing mode, waiting for your device to connect”. If it doesn’t, try holding down the round button on top as you slide the power switch up and keep holding the round button for a couple of seconds as it turns on. Hi Bret, No, to both ideas. At least, not with the free version. Fast forward jumps you to the next book or the help it seems. The slider is too difficult to control to get anywhere close to exactly where you want to be. So, this app will never replace Read2Go for me since I am a Bookshare member and like to have access to the text, etc. Thanks, Richard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Brett Sent: Friday, January 04, 2013 6:38 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Voice Dream Reader Hi,. I agree, it would be nice to access more file types with Read2Go and I would like to see more Acapella voices available. Perhaps if enough people contact both Bookshare and the Voice Dream Reader author we can get something going. Given the voices choices, Voice Dream is a very appealing option, not to mention the price, but I'm not willing to listen through that notice section and all the table of contents, reviews, etc., in Bookshare books. To me, the $19.99 was well worth it for Read2Go just to easily navigate the books. If you tap the editor button, you get a message stating that the document is too large to edit. It's a shame as this could be a really great app for reading but has some major accessibility issues that currently don't make it a great choice for a blind user IMHO. As others have already stated, the real text area where one can interact with the text with various gestures is totally invisible to VO. I do plan to contact the author and give this feedback. It's interface to BookShare is pretty nice and straight forward so I hope the app gets better. Actually, what i would really like to see is the Read2Go app simply added more supported file formats and it would be perfect. I haven't purchased it for that very reason, only BookShare books are supported and for $20 I would want more formats, at least text, PDF, and epub without DRM of course. RE: Deleting Photos from my Phone
I do not know the answer to the iCloud question, but if you are using Windows and plug your USB cable into your computer, the computer will see the iPhone as an external drive. Launch Windows Explorer and navigate to the iPhone drive. Several folder levels down you will finally get to the list of photos. You can then just select all and hit delete. Or, manually move them to your hard drive in case you want to see if it effects the iCloud backup. You can always copy them back to the phone if it does. There are 2 Aftershokz headphones with mic, the older AS301 and the newer M2. You can read up about them on Amazon, I am not entirely sure what improvements they made with the M2. braille connect 24 and the i phone a few questions
Hi everyone. I purchased a used braille connect 24 and am learning how to use it and love it so far. I've had some exposure to using a refreshable braille display so I can do email and texts and such. My question is tweeting. Which of the twitter clients do you think works best as far as navigation with the connect 24? Any tips or tricks you can give me as far as navigation and how to keep my spot in my time line while tweeting? Also is there an easy way to unlock your phone with the braille display? I notice with the amazon bluetooth keyboard if you turn it on you can automatically unlock the phone as the bluetooth starts working. If there's a better email group to ask these kinds of questions feel free to point me in that direction also. Thanks. -- Rebecca and Zeb email: rilni...@gmail.com facebook: www.facebook.com/rebeccai5 Zeb's facebook: www.facebook.com/zeb.ilniski -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I'd never had occasion to use the app, but I did update it from time to time, thinking that accessibility would be maintained as time went on and new releases were introduced. Boy, was I wrong. Since I'm getting ready to travel in a few days, I launched it and immediately slammed into a wall, figuratively speaking. There's an image of some sort and a page control, neither of which can be dealt with with VoiceOver. Has anybody checked this app out recently, and is there a way to get past the initial screen? The book description said that Gate Guru could be really helpful, and if so, I'd like to check it out, but that spash screen, if that's what it is, is really a bummer. Any thoughts? Difference between the new and old model Aftershokz headphones
Hi, According to the rep from Aftershokz when I purchased my, (1) the new model has smaller control panel; (2) newer model has the volume control in the panel and the old one only has 2 buttons; (3) the battery usage is a bit longer in the new model; (4) the new model only has 2 years warranty and the old one has life time warranty and (5) new model costs more. I chose the old model because the life time warranty. But I notice their support is terrible for I am already encountered problem with my unit after 2 months. I am still not able to get hold of them. RE: Announcing: New Products from SpeedDots.
Hi Paul, No; the phone keypad layout for the iPhone 5 only has the numbers labeled, as well as the other functions that you use within that app, such as all the function buttons at the bottom, (favorites, contacts, voicemail, etc,) as well as the call and end call buttons, and delete. It does not have any of the keyboard labeled at all. It really is for folks who just want to use the phone and nothing more, or for those who do all of their typing/interaction via external Bluetooth keyboard. Hope that helps. Announcing the Speed Dots Tactile screen protectors for iPhone 5, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5th Generation. At long last, we now have tactile screen protectors for the current generation of apple iOS devices. These include: iPhone 5, the iPad mini, and the iPod touch 5th generation. We would also like to apologize for the delay. We intended to have all of this available in October, but we tried to change designers for our templates, and the product we received, was not up to our standards. So, even though it put us behind schedule, we are using our normal person and we have the quality we feel comfortable selling; and that our customers have come to expect. The tactile screen protectors for the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 are almost identical to the previous versions; however, we added 2 additional marks that people requested and would still keep things uncrouded. In the top right, we added previous email and clear text. We always had next email which lined up with the done button in the top right, and we figured that adding previous email would give people that work with email a lot on their phones a better experience. This also had the added benefit of making the clear text buttons easier to find. The 2nd change we made is we added the attach media button above the keyboard in messaging. This mark is above the keyboard letter Q on the left side (opposite the send button.) We added this on the iPad, and realized that it should have always been on the iPhone. Lastly for iPhone 5, we have a new layout. We have gotten many requests for a simple phone keypad layout, from people who still want to use their phone as a real phone. We wanted to keep things simple, and uncluttered but find a way to speed up dialing numbers. We placed a single dot on each number and function of the keypad, and to help locate things quicker, we placed 2 dots on the number 5, as well as the call button. We will continue to cut them to size for the OtterBox Defender case. as well as sell the case with your choice of screen protector already attached. The tactile screen protectors for the iPad mini, have similar markings to the full size iPad. More info on the marks for the iPad and iPad mini can be found at http://www.speeddots.com/faq.php You can place your order by going to http://www.SpeedDots.com and selecting the purchase online link. You will find links to the new products in the store. Thank you again for your interest, and we appreciate your patience, and your business! We look forward to serving you. I am guilty in commenting on the price of this app too. If this app will do what it is expected, then it it worth the money. I would like to know how many of the list has Readp2Go or Digit-Eyes? Re: Email on iPad
This got me too, to begin with. The buttons you want are in fact at the top of the screen when in portrait mode and I just underneath the status bar. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy enough to aim your finger at one of the buttons. I do find though that I have to do a little more flicking on and then I did on the phone because I tend to lose the button more frequently. Perhaps that's because of the size of the screen. Also of course, I don't have the home button just below the delete to give me some kind of guidance as to where I am. Anyway, it works for me and I hope you can get itot work for you also. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Dulce, Thanks for your question. We designed BrailleTouch so that you hold it in two hands with the screen facing away from you. However, some people have reported success placing the phone flat on a table and typing with BrailleTouch. You can download BrailleTouch for free and try it out, including the unsupported method of typing on the phone when it is lying on a table. This alternate way of using BrailleTouch may work for you. Paul From: SpeedDots Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2013 12:25 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Announcing: New Products from SpeedDots. Announcing the Speed Dots Tactile screen protectors for iPhone 5, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5th Generation. At long last, we now have tactile screen protectors for the current generation of apple iOSdevices. This mark is above the keyboard letter Q on the left side (opposite the send button.) We added this on the iPad, and realized that it should have always been on theiPhone. Re: brailletouch podcast backwards
Cheryl, Good catch! If you lock your phone in portrait, then BrailleTouch will work with the home button on your right, from the perspective of the screen facing away from you. It will be locked in this orientation. If you do not lock your iPhone, then BrailleTouch will work in both landscape orientations, depending on which way you hold the phone. So Michael Hansen is correct in his podcast. He was just holding it in the other landscape orientation. Regardless of how you hold the phone if it is not locked in portrait mode, dot 1 is your left index finger, dot 3 is your left ring finger, dot 4 is your right index finger, and so forth. Hi Heather, Go to the beginning of the text string that you want to read, then turn your rotor to characters. Once that's done, you can flick character by character through the string. That usually works for me, anyway. Re: brailletouch podcast backwards
I am sorry to be contradictory, but he is not correct. He instructed people to hold their iphones with the home button to the left and that will be correct only if your phone is not locked in portrait orientation. It is exactly opposite to the clear directions in the welcome screen and I consider it to be very confusing. Many of us do indeed lock our screens in portrait orientation and Michael did not say If your phone is not locked in portrait orientation, it doesn't matter whether the home button is on the left or the right. Instead he specifically said that voiceover would announce it as home button to the right (which it does not say; it says the opposite I heard it clearly on the podcast) and he specifically said that we should really have the home button to the left. What he did may have worked because his phone was not locked in portrait mode but his instructions, it appears to me, were confusing. It is too bad this wasn't corrected before this podcast was put up; if people continue to listen to this after the app comes out I am quite sure it will multiply the confusion. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. I hope this helps. Best, Caleb http://brailletouchapp.com/ On 1/5/2013 7:11 PM, Cheryl Homiak wrote: It appears to me that he got this exactly backwards. But the podcaster immediately turns the instructions around and says we are to hold the phone with the home button on the left and that voiceover says it's on the right. I listened to that part four times to make sure I wasn't confused. I'm not even going to listen to the rest of this because it will only confuse me! Maybe he's right and i'm the one who is confused but I don't think so. If I am right, no wonder he thought it would be confusing to people to use this app at first. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Scanning App
Hello, There have been lots of discussions on this list regarding OCR-scanning app. With so many of us, you may get dozens of opinions of which one works best for some and not for others. Personally, I always seem to go back to Say Text. I have tried many of the apps, with Sandy Tompkins being the OCR Queen of this list. She seems to have a knack for getting excellent results all of the time. When an app becomes free or for a reduced price, grab it and try it out. I am sure that you will find one that you can manage better than another OCR app. That's what I have found. JMO. Recipe Apps
Hi Lynn, I wanted to start a new thread. The apps that I consistently use is Epicurious, and Whole Food. Although, I need to check out Big Oven, which is the one that Tom recommended. There are so many cooking apps, but not all are accessible with VO. I just downloaded one called Italian Cook, but it's just okay and the navigation is tricky. The redeeming factor is that the app was free, which means no money lost. Have fun cruising the AppleVis site. In the Read@Go app, one can search and download periodicals and books. Why can't one do it in the Learning Ally app. It's running on the same principle. I understand that one needs to purchase the books or magazines from the 3rth party and then sync it to the phone, but in the case of Learning Ally, I don't think it should be this way. HTH. Netflix Update: Is it okay?
Hello List, Forgive me if this was posted recently. I have been having some problems on my iPhone4 mail app and I think I have fixed it. I noticed anew update to the Netflix app. I know in the past when this app has been updated, there have been some problems with VO accessibility with it. Has anyone updated Netflix to the current update and found it as accessible as the last previous version? Please advise and indicate if it is okay to update. Thanks in advance. Re: braille connect 24 and the i phone a few questions
Hi,. You have to unlock the phone from the phone itself. You cannot do it from the Braille display. Personally I find tweatlist to be the best twitter client. Most of the time it remembers my place, but if it doesn't, you just need to touch in the middle of the phones screen to get back to your position. Re: brailletouch podcast backwards
Later on in the podcast voiceover does indeed say home button on the rightbut it doesn't start out that way and it says home button on the right because he is holding the phone with the home button on the left. I do understand why this worked for him since he apparently wasn't locked in portrait mode but I still think it is confusing. However, one thing I did realize is that I had a wrong picture of where your fingers tap. I was picturing it with your fingers alont the long edge of the phone so that dot 3 would be on the far left and dot 6 would be on the far right. Instead, I see that the two sets of dots (1 2 3; 4 5 6) will be at each end of the phone so that apparently 1 and 4 will be at opposite ends of the length of the phone but will be at the highest edge and 4 and 6 will be at opposite ends of the phone but will be at what would be the bottom edge when you hold the phone away from you. I was visualizing a long row of dots across the long edge; apparently it's really two sets of dots on the two ends? If this is the case I appreciate the information but still wish the home button issue had not been made more confusing. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. He was just holding it in the other landscape orientation. Regardless of how you hold the phone if it is not locked in portrait mode, dot 1 is your left index finger, dot 3 is your left ring finger, dot 4 is your right index finger, and so forth. I listened to that part four times to make sure I wasn't confused. I'm not even going to listen to the rest of this because it will only confuse me! Maybe he's right and i'm the one who is confused but I don't think so. Re: BrailleTouch app cost comparison
We recommend using a case with BrailleTouch for several reasons. 1. A case will help you grip the phone from the sides with both hands. 2. On the iPhone the speaker is under the Home button. A case will help keep your hand from blocking the speaker, if you use the speaker and not headphones. (The speaker location on the iPod touch is not an issue.) 3. A case will help orient your fingers on the screen when you are typing. It may work for you without a case. Please try the app with the free version first. attaching to an email
I thought it would be standard procedure. But I couldn't find a way to attach files to an email. Can someone please remind me how to attach files or photos to an email in the latest version of ios? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Wolfram Alpha with Siri.
Thank you for the help, and thank you for the screenshot. I just want to let you know that the screenshot comes out as an image. The screenshot is sent as an attachment. When you press attachment, it opens up and there are buttons that give you options for what to do with your image such as safe to camera roll cancel copy or assigned to contact. That is not necessarily the order they are in and I may have missed one or two but that is how it works. There is also a print button. I did not know that either so now we all know something. We can all learn from each other. Thank you for your reply also. It was helpful. God bless. I don't know if you will be able to get VO to read the screenshot, I haven't tried this before. However, once the WA App is onboard, Siri is much better equipped to respond to questions which might require a thesaurus and does not seem to need to use the net. I think Siri can already do this, but with the app you have much more info at your fingertips. Hope this helps! Sandy. RE: Brailletouch: question for the Devs.
I think allowing you to access your contacts is absolutely the preferred way to do this and I believe Fleksy has not done this so far because of some sort of restriction Apple had. The Fleksy people told me at one point they were hoping to do this in iOS 6 and I think it would be much better to do away with the ability to manually add an email address or phone number under settings. After all, the native mail and messages apps simply use the contacts you have on your phone anyways and so does Skype and some other apps. The first version of BrailleTouch does not store a list of favorite contacts. You pick from your iPhone address book. VoiceOver acting up (again)
Dear list, I had purchased an Iphone 4S in July of last year and used VoiceOver , I noticed, that when triple clicking the home button voice over would turn off as normal, but then the phone it's self would becomes unresponsive.. I was advised by many people to go ahead and replace the iPhone with a new one, I ended up, replacing my prior iPhone with a new iPhone 4S and for a while things seem to be going well… However, just recently VoiceOver has started exhibiting the same behavior as it did with my original iPhone. it will turn off normally, then i, the phone will become unresponsive, this has been an intermittent issues. Previously when my original iPhone I erased the phone, set up as new ect. With my replacement iPhone when I first received it it worked 100%... However this issue is intermittent and I am getting to the point where I am about ready to not use VoiceOver. Anyone ever experience this issue I need help my 90 apple care support ran out some time ago and I am wondering if replacing the replacement is productive? Already contacted apple accessibility however they cannot re produce the issue. Please HELP -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Are USB wall jacks interchangeable?
Hi Keith, I can't say for the iPhone 5, but I heard before people said the iPhone 4 and 4S wall adapters also had a chip and you could not use a generic USB wall adapter. I have not at all found that. I have at least 4 different USB wall adapters which came with various devices such as the Jambox, another Bluetooth headset I bought and I even have a travel extention block which has a short, 1-foot power cable, 2 regular power plug-ins and 2 USB plugs and all of them work to charge my 4S. If you have an iPhone 5 or an iPad, just take that wall plug and it will do everything. The iPad one if you have one is preferred because it delivers more power and will charge your iPhone faster. Hi, Packing for a trip, and I find myself with at least 3 different charging cords for different devices, but they all have a USB wall jack. Are these USB wall jacks one size fits all? I seem to recall someone on this list once mentioning that in the new lightning plug for iPhone 5, that there was a chip in the wall plug and it may not work, or may not work well or safely, with a wrong device. VoiceOver acting up (again)
Hello, Whenever my phone is acting up, I always turn it off and then turn it back on. It's like rebooting a desktop computer. Hold down the top button or sleep button. Until you hear or see slide to power off. Wait 10 seconds and then restart the phone. It usually takes care of most problems. RE: Skype
Hi Irene, As Ming already pointed out, I would not recommend setting up a new Skype Id because then you lose all your Contacts, if you use your existing Skype Id you can add a new contact on the iPhone and it should show up also when you log in on the computer and vice versa. When you open Skype on your iPhone for the first time it will also ask you if you give permission for Skype to access your Contacts. I would recommend that because that way if you ever use Skype to make phone calls, you can access all the phone numbers from your contact list.
