Hi all, When I've been using the frotz app, I've come across some games when they give the prologue to the game, at the end they either say press enter to begin or press space to continue. In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps. If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility. need recs for external mic/iphone to record meetings

I am not sure if the internal microphone would be powerful enogh to record all the voices round the table so i am thinking of buying an external mic either with a stand so i can put it on the table or clip on (but if i do that i think the typing would be too loud). Re: need recs for external mic/iphone to record meetings
About the only thing which I can think off of the top of my head that will work for this project will be the iRig mic which pluggs directly in to the iPhones headphone jack. This mic has 3 settings on it, soft, middle loud which changes the audio pattrn of the mic. I know that there are several other possibilities which will work. However, I've found this option to work the best. This is what I've sometimes used in news reporting to record news conferences. This mic also has a headphone jack on it so that you mnay monitor the audio which the mic is capturing. Any further, let me know. Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?
Hi everyone, I was just listening to a programme on radio 4 UK, called In touch. This is a weekly prog dedicated to the interests of the VIP community. This time it was looking at the potential of using voice recognition to provide Deaf Blind people with a transcript of radio programmes. I should mention, for those who don't know it, Radio 4 is primarily a speech based service as apposed to music based. There is a scheme afoot, in the States, using centralised computing power to begin this service for some radio stations there. Now, this got me thinking, couldn't Siri/Dragon do this for us directly on our phones? Has anyone come across an app that already does this, or am i in the vanguard here? Personally, I don't, at this moment, need such a service, but I think, this might be useful to some of our members, especially, if, instead of waiting for national efforts, we could do it for ourselves. I do see so many apps appearing, seemingly, after the horse has bolted, as it were, offering functionality to us, the which we already have through the mainstream, but an app of this sort might actually offer a new form of access to a subsection of VIP iPhone users and increase their access to the spoken word in a meaningful way. Also, I am thinking, seeing as many of these apps actually learn as they are used, it might provide the basis of voice to text recognition on the fly. Am I making sense? Does this thought seem useful or am I behind the times? JMT, Sandy. Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: few interesting things in IOS 7
Well carriers may hate this but unlike the competitor there's nothing they can do as Apple has full control over the hardware and software. I am looking forward to the Facetime audio feature as well but do wonder if we all have to use iOS 7 in order to take advantage of this or will it be backwards compatible so say you make a Facetime audio call to somebody who is still on iOS 6 would it perhaps disable the video at theirs as well as my end who knows. I hope so as not everybody can be expected to upgrade to iOS 7. Just my £0.02 worth anyway. Re: app update won't download
Hi, I had this problem over the weekend when trying to update Looktel Money Reader and at one point I got an error saying that I couldn't connect to the iTunes store. Since my wi-fi was working fine I figured that the best thing to do was to just wait and see what happens. There may well have been some sort of server issue. I tried launching Money Reader at work and couldn't launch it. By the time I got home and tried it again, the problem seemed to have resolved itself. In a worst case scenario I'll uninstall and reinstall an app from scratch, but it's rare when I have to do that. Re: Using Siri or Dragon to transpose radio speech into text/braille?
hello Sandra. NPR Labs in the US has been working on somewhat of a similar project to what you're talking about, and I've even sene prototypes of some of the devices that they want to use. NPR labs even captioned one of the US presidential debates last October to demonstrate the abilities of this technology. It was done over the web, but was something I could follow with braille without too much difficulty. A slower braille reader would certainly struggle to even remotely keep up, but for me, it was great. Essentially, the issue is funding, as I understand it. They were using some voice recognition software to get the bulk of the speech automatically dictated, and then had transcribers check the text for any errors and to also insert who was speaking into the text. This would be one issue with automatically translating speech to text in this sort of environment as I see it. While it's certainly possible to understand who is speaking based on context, it's not always so clear. This is why a human needs to still do some of the work. As for an iOS app, I don't think iDevices currently have the processing power needed to keep up with a half hour or more worth of dictation. It would certainly be nice if everyone had access to all of the info on the radio, but I think the technology is a few years off yet. Maybe if we ever get technology that would be able to understand one's voice print, we could then have this part of the process automated as well. Again, I think this is a bit off yet, though. I've heard of this radio 4 program, it seems like something I should check out. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Scott On 6/11/13, Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote: Hi everyone, I was just listening to a programme on radio 4 UK, called In touch. Re: Editing dictated text messages.
Hi Sandy, In order to edit, you need first to position the cursor. Double tap in the edit field (towards the right-hand side of the phone) and you should hear either Top of text or Bottom of text. If you hear bottom ... then tap again twice in that area till you hear Top. You need to have your rotor settings to read character, word or line. I generally find word the most useful. You now need to move, say, by word to check your text. Still in the same edit area, you need to flick down once for each word and up to go back through the text. If you are reading by letter, you need to read till you have heard the wrong letter, then you can tap the del to remove that letter and then insert the one you want. That's simplified the editing to correcting a letter. If you want to correct a word then read (with rotor set to words) till you reach the word to be corrected, then you change to the letter by letter setting of the rotor to correct. This can get a lot more complicated and introduce selecting text, but let's see where you want to go once you've mastered the beginning techniques. You can write me privately if you'd like me to take you further. Remember also, it is useful to dictate by sentence or phrase and then you can always shake the phone if you find that you have made a mistake in that phrase and it will remove the last one. cursor. Re: T-Mobile and Cellular Data suggestions/questions
Hi, Yes, I can certainly verify about the 3G and wi fi. I was having trouble with my router. When I would check to see if the router was working, I would check wi fi on my iPhone 4. When I would check after unlocking the screen it would always say 3G, and then switch to wi fi. Initially, I thought it was the router, but then realized that it happened consistently. Being at home, I never noticed a real uptick in data useage. Crystal From: DJ Sent: Monday, June 10, 2013 7:17 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: T-Mobile and Cellular Data suggestions/questions Be aware that the iPhone has been known to switch from wi-fi to celular when it has been in the locked screen for a while. Some folks have confirmed this by waiting for 5 or 10 minutes, pressing the sleep button, and quickly touching the space where the wi-fi / cell information is given. Frequently, the phone will say 4g, or whatever it was using. It does switch back to wi-fi pretty quickly after you unlock it though. My suggestion is to turn celular data off while at home to avoid this. This forces the phone to stay on wi-fi. You can always check if you are on WiFi simply by touching the time at the middle of the status bar, then flick left once. If Voiceover says 3G or whatever it says if you have an iPhone 5 and are on 4G/LTE, well, then you are on cellular data. If you are connected to your WiFi it will announce the signal strength and it will say one of 3 things: 3 of 3 bars, WiFi signal strength 2 of 3 bars, WiFi signal strength 1 of 3 bars, WiFi signal strength Obviously 3 of 3 means it has the best reception, 2 of 3 means it's pretty good, 1 of 3 means it gets not a very strong WiFi signal. The iPhone is extremely good at automatically switching to WiFi and if gives you a WiFi signal strength to the left of the time you are definitely on WiFi. Well, I just had to use the data for a while, because there was no wifi available where I am right now. Well, so, I soly had to rely on cellular data. I do have unlimited, but it is from t-mobile. Can any of you t-mobile customers tell me how they are? Are they the ones that also degrade your speed? I heard on this list, many companies do that, so I was wondering and what you guys do to save your data. At home, now that I have wifi, I turn my cellular data off by setting, general, cellular data on and double tap to put it off. I am guessing that's the trick. But, I only used my data for my emails, listening to tune in radio, and couple youtube videos here and there. That's all. So, any advice would be helpful. -- Important quotes that people need to read and understand: JUST BECAUSE A MAN LACKS THE USE OF HIS EYES DOESN'T MEAN HE LACKS VISION!! deleting characters while editing a text field
Ok, this is sort of related to the editing discussion going on but not exactly. I have found that when editing a text entry it is very confusing as to how the cursor works. If I move the cursor forward(toward the end) and press the delete button it seems to delete the character where the cursor is. If I move backward(toward the beginning) it seems to delete the character before the cursor. However, it does not always seem to work this way. Can anyone explain to me how this is supposed to work? I am getting very frustrated trying to figure out exactly what is happening. Thanks for any help. Dan Beaver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: AppleTV
Hi. If you want to be able to watch Apple TV, you will need a TV that has an HDMI input. If you don't care about the video part of it you could probably get away with using a sound bar with an HDMI input but that will probably cost you just as much as purchasing a new flat screen with HDMI. Re: need recs for external mic/iphone to record meetings
I'm the president of our home owners association. By my states laws we are required to record all the board of directors meetings. We sit at a church table. Church tables are long and can seat 7 board members plus my property manager so 8 people in a line. My property manager and I as President sit in the center. The recordings made with iPhone pick up everybody at the table. I don't actually do the recording. That's what I have a manager for but those recordings are then posted online so that our home owners who want a copy of any of our meetings can just download them etc. There is a section in the meeting called home owner comments. The home owners sit at other tables in the room and we have had no problems with people saying they didn't hear what was being said. From time to time, a home owner talks like their mumbling and are then asked to speak louder and clearly so that their remarks can be picked up by the recorder. It has another valuable function too. When people know that they are being recorded by law, they tend to refrain from swearing and name calling. Sometimes meetings get shall we say, colorful? This announcement that the meetings are recorded by law puts folks on their best behavior. - Original Message - From: Anouk Radix To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 11, 2013 1:48 AM Subject: need recs for external mic/iphone to record meetings Hi everyone, I need to take notes at meetings and make reports of them, to be sure i dont miss anything i would like to record them with my iphone. Re: few interesting things in IOS 7
The short answer is that it depends. If you have a 3GS, you will not be able to get the new operating system without upgrading your phone. If you have a four or four ass, there is a possibility that all the features of the new operating system may not work on your phone. We will need to hear from Apple on this as the release of the operating system comes closer. I wouldn't make any hasty decisions on your phone until you have seen that information from Apple which should be available very close to the release date of the operating system. I hope this helps. Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps?

I listened to the Keynote today. I was interrupted during some of the iOS 7 portion when they were talking about the 10 new features. However, nothing about accessibility was mentioned. In prior Keynote addresses, they always mentioned accessibility changes, improvements, etc. Siri is getting a new voice, but that has nothing to do with accessibility. In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps. If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility. I know there are developers on this list and I know you are all under NDAs, but it will be good to know if accessibility is being improved rather than ignored. Re: deleting characters while editing a text field
Hello, The cursor follows what you are doing. That is, according to the direction you are working in. The cursor will shift when you change your direction of work. Say that you are at the start of the second paragraph in an editor. If you move forward to the right, the cursor will be to the left of where you last crossed. However, if you change and start moving back toward the start of this imaginary paragraph, the cursor will now be just to the right of where you are as you move back toward the start of the paragraph. I'm sure this is as clear as mud, but because the cursor works differently than how it works in a Windows environment, it can be strange at first. I've been using Apple products for several years and now, I think that the way cursors work in Windows is strange. I suppose that I am trying to say that in time, the way the cursor works in either iOS or OS X, you will probably come to like this cursor following you kind of thing. HTH! Re: T-Mobile and Cellular Data suggestions/questions
where do you go to turn of the data? - Original Message - From: DJ grou...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, June 10, 2013 8:17 PM Subject: RE: T-Mobile and Cellular Data suggestions/questions Be aware that the iPhone has been known to switch from wi-fi to celular when it has been in the locked screen for a while. That's all. is this recorder free? - Original Message - From: Alan Paganelli To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 11, 2013 1:08 PM Subject: Re: need recs for external mic/iphone to record meetings I'm the president of our home owners association. Well, I figured it was just a long Prologue, as it’s a history book and all the reading content I did today was about what led up to World War II. But it turned out, when I paused the reading to take a break, at “the start of the war”, that I was in Chapter 3. So, although it announced “Prologue”, there wasn’t an announcement of advancing to Chapter 1, Chapter 2, or even Chapter 3. Is there a setting within Audible I may have inadvertentlytoggled to turn off Chapter heading announcements. It’s an audio book from a major publisher, so I would think Chapter announcements would occur as I’ve encountered with other Audible books. Thanks for any insights. Re: audo update in ios 7
I would be surprised if the bit rate in iTunes Radio will be very high since they want you to download the track from the iTunes store. We shall see. On 6/10/2013 5:44 PM, Mary Otten wrote: Sieghard, Yes, iTunes match is now more attractive to me as well. Good-bye Pandora. I won't be resubscribing to pandora 1 if itunes radio turns out to be as good as it seems like it could be. And I do hope you are right about the auto update being user selectable. I was expecting to hear about keyboard integration across the OS being possible, based on something that was reported on the Flexy website. But they didn't mention that, although they did talk about a bunch of new apis and game controller integration, which doesn't seem very interesting to totally blind folks, but clearly is for the majority of users. And I surely do wish Apple accessibility would release a list of VO improvements. You can't really expect accessibility to get much play in a big keynote. But it'd be good to know for us end users. Question on iTunes music
Hi again, Last night, I downloaded about 8 songs from Youtube and synced them to my phone. But I've noticed that on the phone and pc, they're coming up as playlists, not just an individual song, however, I just delete the playlist and I still have the song. My question is, is this normal for them to come up as playlists? For example, Jaws and VO says downloads playlist, the numberof songs, and the date in which I downloaded them. Thanks. Yes I certainly hope that there is an auto toggle feature that you can turn on off because I'm having to use a version of an app that was out about a year ago, because the current version of that app is not accessible. An iPhone chuckle
So I am sitting at my table going through my email. Suddenly I see that I have one hundred percent battery level. I think to myself, really getting great battery life. I have been here for about two hours and still one hundred percent. I lay the phone down, and when I get back getting something to drink I pick it back up and joke on me. The cord was attached. Hmmm! Mobile Phone Service and International Travel
I've only been an iPhone user for about 4 months so please forgive the elementary nature of some of my questions. When I first joined this list, I remember reading a few posts about traveling to other countries with your mobile phone. The issue being discussed had to do with mobile plans and getting SIM cards in the visited country and not with charging of the device. Can someone please give an overview of how to use your iPhone in another country such as France when traveling? I assume the issue is that whoever is providing the mobile service in your home country is not in the visited country so fees can really run up. What I don't understand is how you get service at a more reasonable rate when traveling internationally by purchasing a SIM card in the host country. Does the type of card you get have anything to do with your current phone service provider as it seems to in this country? I wouldn't think so but I'm fishing here. Do you get a new phone number to use while traveling? Is there any way to use your current phone number and what about having access to your contacts? I'm really just looking for a primer on this issue so if anyone knows of a good website to direct me to, that would be great. Thanks in advance for any information on this topic. Re: Can an iPod with a Reciever Use GPS apps?
If a person buys a GPS app that downloads the maps to the device like Navigon or Tom Tom, then an iPod Touch can be used for GPS. I believe there are two or three blue tooth GPS receivers now that work with iDevices. I have not seen or used any of them. Duel Electronics and BadElf are two I remember discussions about a year or more ago. amazon sold them both and I'm thinking there is another, but I can't remember the name. I'd suggest a search on Amazon for blue tooth gps receiver and Apple to see what is currently there. In fact, one thing they mentioned that does not sound very good from an accessibility stand point is the automatic updating of apps. If they don't allow us to disable that feature, there will be no way to avoid updating an app that has broken accessibility. Re: Moderator Note -was- Re: audo update in ios 7
I was wondering if something in the NDA for Apple has changed, because I've seen tweets from folks who normally say 0 about stuff they're testing. Not lots of info in the tweets, but still, one made reference to something specific about accessibility in ios7, and I've seen several posts on major sites like Mac Rumors about the presence of walking directions in maps on ios7. And then there was one that noted 10 things that didn't get mentioned by Apple yesterday. So really, just how closely held is the info under the apple nda? If Apple were as secretive as everybody says, wouldn't they be revoking a whole lot of dev licenses for talking about stuff that they themselves didn't mention yesterday? Re: few interesting things in IOS 7
According to what was said at yesterday's keynote, you'll need the iPHone 5 if you want to take advantage of the new air drop. 4S users need not apply. I don't get that because I think they said the iPod 5th gen would have air drop, and since it has the same processor as the 4S, this seems like an arbitrary limitation on Apple's part, i.e. it doesn't sound like a hardware limitation in the 4S. Voice Dream Reader is an app for reading a wide variety of materials. It has a very nice interface with Bookshare. Additional Neospeech voices can be purchased for $2.99 each. The developer is looking into maybe offering Ivona voices in the future. I'm also interested in linking it to goodreads and audioboo, but haven't gotten there yet. HI Mary, None of this is the point. Y'all were simply asked two things; • Don't post NDA protected material here • Do not continue / add to this thread. It's very simple. This list has always honored Apple NDAs and those of other companies and individuals as well. So Posting any protected material is not welcome here. Now, as I'd also asked that we close this thread, you're now moderated. If anyone would like to continue this discussion, please do it somewhere else or if you'd like to offer me some choice words ;) please do feel free to write me privately. I'm super happy to talk about this stuff off the list but as for list discussion, let's close this topic and move on. K? Thank you all so much and do have a wonderful day! Smiles, Cara :) On Jun 11, 2013, at 11:46 AM, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote: I was wondering if something in the NDA for Apple has changed, because I've seen tweets from folks who normally say 0 about stuff they're testing. Re: Apple Keynote
Shane, why concentrate bad energy on something which 1 we do not have any control over and 2 we don't know what the future holds with regard to accessability. Is there some reason we should spend all this time until fall worrying about this? Have you a crystal ball and have seen in to the future? Apple was the first, or nearly the first computer-based company to care about those of us with disabilities, is there some reason you think they might change their mind about this. Sounds to me like it would make more sense to look forward optomisticly rather than look forward pesimisticly, takes less energy and it is truly alot more fun. Re: Creating ringtones from music
Recently, I bought ring maker pro, 99¢. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ringtone-maker-pro-create/id390777480?mt=8 I've found it quite accessible. Some of the buttons are labeled oddly, but that's pretty easy to overlook. You open the app, pick a song from your library, then you can begin editing. There are start and stop tickers to flick up and down. There is a play button to check how you are doing with your creation. There are buttons to really fine tune the time intervals. When you have your tone just how you like it, the app will create it for you; you can email it to yourself or share it with a friend. Re: Problem with NFB Newsline?
Alan, I raised this issue just a couple of weeks ago here. NFB told me at the time I was the only person ever to have reported this issue and they could not reproduce it. I did not get much confirmation of others having this same problem here, either. So, I gathered I was just unique… Just like my family says… One test I would ask is are you reading papers by first selecting your subscriptions and then updating those subscriptions. Or are you just reading your favorites so that they are downloaded one paper at a time. I tried testing this twice and both times the system was off-line and I have not been able to try it again sense. Just this weekend, I heard from another user who was having exactly the same situation. So, if you ever do get confirmation of the problem and or a solution, many will certainly appreciate it. Apple was the first, or nearly the first computer-based company to care about those of us with disabilities, is there some reason you think they might change their mind about this. Sounds to me like it would make more sense to look forward optimistically rather than look forward pessimistically, takes less energy and it is truly alot more fun. navigon
HI. have the voice turn by turn directions gone away in navigon? I hadn't used it for a while and yesterday tried to set up a route to an address. for route profile it only gave me vehicle or pedestrian. no matter which I picked, couldn't get voiced turn by turn directions. has this vanished or did they just move it? if so, can someone enlighten me as to where? thanks.Brian. -- Contact me on skype: brian.moore follow me on twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bmoore123 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. An app for the iPhone, iTouch, etc. On Jun 11, 2013, at 12:57 PM, Kay Malmquist kay.malmqu...@gmail.com wrote: Is this an app for your phone or the PC? Some of the buttons are labeled oddly, but that's pretty easy to overlook. You open the app, pick a song from your library, then you can begin editing. There are start and stop tickers to flick up and down. There is a play button to check how you are doing with your creation. There are buttons to really fine tune the time intervals. When you have your tone just how you like it, the app will create it for you; you can email it to yourself or share it with a friend. Of course, at this point, you need to go to iTunes on your pc/mac and upload the tone. You can get it to repeat by tapping on the lower left corner where it gives the miles left to the next WavePoint. I am not sure if this is your concern withNavigon. I just used it last night to get my husband back on the correct freeway home. HTH.
