Re: M braille or braille touch
Favourite: mBraille, it is full Braille, can do contracted, tons of other stuff too; but you type using single action per symbol. BrailleTouch was good in its day, but it took 3 gestures to complete a single symbol. One got good at it of course, but still not the efficiency of mBraille. Having said that, I always found BT utterly reliable in it's input mode, mBraille had glitches periodically as new apps are won't to do. mB is my main braille input and I keep BT as a workable spare. I have to add the caveat - mBraille allows you to edit,... in a logical straight forward way. BT offered it too, but more fiddly and never further developed despite many requests to that end. Despite all the mBraille's dot commands and things, it was only ever started for text input, which involves easy editing; so this remains its primary and best feature. - Original Message - From: Arnold Schmidt arno...@mindspring.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, January 05, 2014 6:10 AM Subject: Re: M braille or braille touch My favorite ability in MBraille, and the defining reason I bought it, is its ability to edit text. Re: M braille or braille touch
Hi last I heard BrailleTouch has effectively gone out of business, remember this was out of a student research project, so once the research and project is complete they then released the product, then one update, then i guess they moved on after that to goodness knows what. MBraille on the other hand was done by a programmer with 30 years programming experience. From that you can see a huge difference. Re: iPad Air Question
I have the iPhone 5 and the iPad Retina or whatever the one just before the air is. Mostly my sighted husband uses the iPad and the larger screen size is good for him. However, he is totally ignorant electronically so I have to set up everything for him, explore the apps and generally use the iPad. I find that many basic apps are laid out differently and are very confusing and difficult to use. I could not type very well on it at all until I got the speed dots screen protector. It was worth the high price. I even bought the blue tooth keyboard to use with it. One problem to me is the large size. I am used to the placement of items on my phone and it is a much different reach on the iPad. I have not found anything that can be done on the iPad that I can't do better on my iPhone 5. If my husband was not enjoying reading iBooks and playing some games on it I would consider it a huge financial waste. Maybe I would like the mini better but if you have an iPhone and are blind I really feel the iPhone is much easier to use and much more portable. Of course I have a 64g iPhone so have room for lots of stuff. Just my personal opinion. Sherrie -Original Message- From: RobH. But proportion is the key word, big device means big screen and does require bigger gestures. I guess the firmware or ios calculates the significance of gestures by proportion of movement so that it works sensibly on all of them regardless of size. iPad range puts more on the bigger screen since there's room forit, so get used to the idea of having more to look for or find on them. Web, windows and most other platforms have the concept of main area of screen and sidebar like a menu, often a top bar with options, and so on; so you get all this, insteadof burrowing down layer by layer in the small devices. reading text files on the IPhone 5?
Hi, I have a number of text files I placed on the IPhone 5. Now when I try to read them through drop box it is as though there were no formatting. It is as though they were one long giant string instead of many separate lines. Is there a way to format text files for reading on the IPhone 5 so that they show as separate lines? Thanks. Re: iPad Air Question
Hi Chris, as I understand it, the iPad air uses the same chip as does the iPhone 5s. I dashed off my original message about rather quickly as I was late for an appointment and should of been more explicit over what information I was asking after. Re: M braille or braille touch
I use mBraille almost exclusively, though I keep BT as a backup. Anything with text input is just so easy with mBraille compared with native keyboard and of course faster due to being able to use contracted braille. Sometimes mBraille is temperamental not writing what is asked for, but then it could be operator error as I find my fingers sometimes not quite touching properly or soft enough. However, usually when in a big hurry so probably not fault of the app. Personally, mBraille has been the best app I have bought yet, though I don't even begin to use all its dot commands. Re: iPad Air Question
Chris, is there any reason why some controls may be at the top of the screen on the iPad verses the iPhone and on the bottom of the screen on the iPhone? I understand that the iPad air has a much larger screen then does the iPhone 5s. What I'm not understanding is why would the buttons be at the top of the screen on one device and on the bottom of the screen on the other. Are there going to be those sorts of differences often? Is this going to be like a totally different experience then that of the iPhone 5s? Are there any members out there with both an iPhone 5s and an iPad Air who can give me an over view of any differences between the layout on the screens of both devices. Sorry for my confusion here. I suppose I'll find out soon enough either way as my wife and I should be getting the air today. Regards, Alan Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. I hadn't thought about typing on the air with my hands. That should make it easier then to type on the air as it's larger. My kids are both sighted and in their youth. They do this thing with typing with their thumbs. My son says get with the program dad and get out of the stone age! So you can see from that why I like my tag line so much. Re: iPad Air Question
Joanne, thanks for this. I'm getting the hang of it here. My first thought was so the iPad air has a larger screen then the iPhone 5s so all it will mean is everything will just be larger like watching a 13 inch TV and then watching it on a 48 inch TV. It didn't occur to me that the larger screen could be drawn to make better use of the information being presented. As was said, I won't have to drill down through as much. because it will already be there. Hopefully, it cuts down on the flicking and such. Thanks so much! Also, when you said keys and buttons will be in different places, in some cse it will be different places. for example, you got twice as much space on the keyboard than on the iphone if not more, and the gab between apps will be wider from one to another. Some apps lay out will be different from the ipad and iphone. Some apps use containers on the ipad more so than on the iphone. As far as the differences between mini retina and the air is concern, it is really, the size. With my experience on trying both ipad air and the mini retina, i don't see much different in speed. If it does might be some milisecond different. I honestly don't believe it though. considering they both using the same processer and everything, the only explaination that i can think of that might slow down the mini retina a bit will be the retina screen. Anyone experiencing these truly infuriating iPhone issues: dumped out of apps, inability to view videos or listen to podcasts in appps, etc., silence when trying to access articles linked in apps
For the past few weeks, whenever I link to an article on Facebook, Twitter, Search It, etc., VoiceOver starts reading, then goes completely silent and freezes. I am then forced to exit out and go back in to double-click on the desired link, which then acts the same way, or wait a moment or two for the information to load, which it does every so often. Also, whereas I used to be able, with no problem, to play podcasts or YouTube links from within Facebook, Twitter, etc., now I am shown that the track position is changing, that the time is elapsing, but there is no sound. I have tried running the battery down and recharging, shutting down the iPhone and restarting, closing all apps, then reopening desired ones to reach what I wish to read or listen to, but nothing is working. Often, I am simply dumped to the home screen after VO freezes me out. Christine -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. You've very likely already exhausted these options, but make sure you are updated to the latest version of iOS. Also, have you tried doing a hard shutdown of the phone? I'm using a 4S, so this might differ on a newer model, but holding down the home button and the lock button on top of the phone for several seconds will turn off the phone. Start up the phone in the usual manner, and hopefully your problem will be alleviated. Also, sometimes IOS stops to catch up or something. I remember David wrote a great post on this a way backe. Because of his post I try to hold off touching the screen when IOS goes off to see if it rights itself age. Can't tell you the name of the subject so can't send you to the archives, but it has to do with touching the screen and it trying to do your command when it is resetting itself. Not a techie and don't really have the words for this, but that is what I gleaned from David's description. May even not have anything to do with what is going on with your device but thought I'd try and help a bit anyway. Sorry if I am completely missing what is happening with your phone. reggie and Allegra On Jan 5, 2014, at 10:49 AM, Scott Blanks captaincyn...@gmail.com wrote: You've very likely already exhausted these options, but make sure you are updated to the latest version of iOS. Re: App calledChime Squirrel - Recurring chime / alarm / timer to help you be more productive as an exercise reminder
Well so far I think it may have some significant accessibility issues. I tried to go into the FAQ to see if it says how to make the InApp purchases and I'm just thrown back into the chime settings again. Same for the settings icon. I restarted my phone to see if that would help, but no dice. So I would say that if you want the free part it's probably fine but if you want to expand the features by considering the InApp purchase I think you're out of luck. On 1/3/14, Sherrie nanagoose4...@gmail.com wrote: I spend a lot of time on the computer or fiddling with my iPhone and am way too stationary. Then I found a free app called Chime Squirrel - Recurring chime / alarm / timer to help you be more productive for my iPhone that you can set for any time interval. I set it for 15 minutes so every 15 minutes it chimes and I stand up for a bit. It is amazing to me how quickly the chimes follow one another when I am on the computer or using my iPhone. It also works in lock screen. It was completely VO friendly and you can set up the interval and how long you want the reminders to continue. I do have to press start on it each morning but it then chimes at the set interval for the number of hours I had specified. What I like about this app is that you don’t have to touch the phone each time it chimes. I tried an app called Moves but every time it reminded you you had to open the app and click “I did it”. That was a pain. After the information about the app which I am including I am also including the article about standing up. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chime-squirrel/id556415124 App description: Chime Squirrel - Recurring chime / alarm / timer to help you be more productive By Jernejcic Chime Squirrel is a little but powerful app that helps you remember to do repetitive tasks throughout the day, change up your exercise routines, and make you more productive. Set the chime intervals to any length you need, set it run for however long you want, then push the app to the background to get your reminders at the interval times of your choosing. One of the key features of Chime Squirrel is speed. It is designed to get you into the application and your chime quickly started so you can get back to your activities. Chime Squirrel is different from the other alarm applications because its alarm doesn't require you to turn it off; it's a chime, like a clock. It gives you a quick chime(sound/alarm), then goes quietly back to sleep on it's own, counting nuts until the next interval completes. Asking for Referrals for Calendar App
Using the native Calendar app on my iPhone 5, I entered in a meeting that occurs the 2nd Monday of each month. But when I tried to use the Repeat feature of that Calendar app, there was no provision for such scheduling (2nd Monday, 4th Thursday, etc). So, I have two questions: 1) Can anybody recommend a Calendar app that does include such an option in the recurring event data? 2) How would I go about deleting the native Calendar app and replacing with a more feature-rich Calendar app? Looking for a keyboard case, please.
Hi Hi Maria I’ve never heard of such a thing, but, if it did exist, I would think the keyboard would be quite small and therefore of limited use. I have two bluetooth keyboards, one very small, about the size of an iPhone and I find it terribly difficult to use, so I just got a cheap (£12) full size keyboard and cart it about if I need to. It doesn’t weigh much at all and you don’t mind stuffing them in a bag any old how if they are that cheap. I find the sort of plastic envelopes some braille print outs come in make good enough protection for it. Re: Seeing Eye GPS adds monthly subscription
Hi, it's true that paying per month gets very expensive, but it has the huge advantage that it only costs you $10 to find out if the program will really work for you and if it doesn't, then you are only out that one amount. Also, if you don't travel much and only need it occasionally, you could pay for those times you will need it, assuming of course that you will need it less than 6 or 7 times per year since then the cost per year or 3 years would start to be better anyway. I think they mainly did this to allow people to give it a spin. I'm taking advantage of that now and can finally say that I know what the program is really like. So, I for one am glad they added the monthly subscription, for guys like me. -- Raul A. Re: Seeing Eye GPS adds monthly subscription
Raul, thank you. I was going to explain this a couple of days ago but didn't think people would understand that. It is not difficult to figure out that the $10 fee is for people that want to trial the application or simply use it once or twice a year. Sent from the Super-iPhone On Jan 5, 2014, at 9:08 AM, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hi, it's true that paying per month gets very expensive, but it has the huge advantage that it only costs you $10 to find out if the program will really work for you and if it doesn't, then you are only out that one amount. -- Raul A. RE: iPad Air Question
I prefer typing on the smaller iPhone screen rather than the iPad. That said, with Siri available to take dictation, typing should be less of an occurance if that is one’s preference on the newer iPads. I find it easier and faster to glide across the keyboard with one finger or thumb on the phone. Whereas on the iPad, you have to go hunting for letters and symbols. That and with the iPad you’ll quite nearly always need two hands while with the phone, it’s a one handed device. Ultimately though, it’s a question of personal preference. RE: Looking for a keyboard case, please.
If you look at Boxwave, they have a case/keyboard. The keyboard slides out from under the phone. This about doubles the thickness of the phone and adds a bit of weight. Yes, the keys are small but that is to be expected, isn't it? I recently heard that some famous person, I don't recall who, is collaborating on a case/keyboard that will be book-like, as I understood it. Meaning, the keyboard would be on the inside flap of the book cover case. I have tried finding such a case, but have had no luck. I had one of the Boxwave slider cases. I just found the keys were too flat without enough differentiation to be much more effective than using the onscreen keyboard. I have the popular phone-size keyboard and don't use it much for the same reason. I am inclined to agree with others you might be better off with a folding keyboard. I am not very good with descriptions, but let me know if I can help with the Boxwave idea. Re: iPad Air Question
Hi Penny, In contacting the ATT store, it's amazing how many of them are out of stock. The iPad Air we want is the 128 GB model with both WI-FI and Cellular data. We do travel in our motor home and you can usually find WI-FI but it's in cities or large towns. However, in the country or farm lands etc, your more likely to find only cellular. Some times when your really out in the sticks, you cant get either but even at almost a thousand bucks, they are still low or out of stock. So the ATT stores don't open up for another half hour but we'll see. I'm not crazy about ordering it online when I can just go pick it up in the store. We'll see. Re: NFL Audio Pass
I use to be able to listen to the Chicago Bears games online but this year they only broadcasted half the season. The other half, you could listen to the pre-game stuff and when about the time it came to the national anthem they cut it off. I guess next year's season I'll have to pay for it. I don't mind paying for it but I want the WBBM Radio guys feed because that's the home station broadcast. Now my question is, these NFL football apps, are there any which will give me what I want? Or do I have to move back to Chicago? Regards, Alan Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. Pay your bills wile you still know everything. I was able to follow the Bears games within the Chicago Bears free app. The problem is, it's like text messages appearing on your screen within the app. It might look like: 14:30 1-10 J Cutler to B P 45. Of course the P is for the Packers but you get the idea. It's better then a sharp stick in the eye but not by much. Regards, Alan Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! RE: NFL Audio Pass
The Pro radio app has always worked well for me. I’ve always been able to get the local radio feed as an option for my particular team (raiders). I can also access the feed online at CompassMediaNetworks.com if I want to listen to the game on my laptop. I have no idea if the Bears are part of Compass media networks, but you can check it out if you’d like. There’s even a listen live link for iPhone and iPad users if you want to access the games through Safari. The all football app
Hi I downloaded the All football app earlier this year and I think it was only $1.99 and I have been able to get all the NFL football games on radio stations. Each NFL team has different stations you can choose from. You can also get college games but I have not done that. Right now I am listening to the playoff games. I do not know for sure if I will be able to get the super bowl. Maybe someone else who uses this app can tell us if the super bowl will be on this All football app. Ed -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Question on lock screen
Touch anywhere on the display to bring VO focus into the main area. Now, perform a three finger flick from left to right. Or, touch the left edge of the display in approximately the middle and leave your finger still for one to two seconds (I haven't timed it yet) until the two ascending tones. Without lifting your finger, slide it across the display to the right. Re: Anyone experiencing these truly infuriating iPhone issues: dumped out of apps, inability to view videos or listen to podcasts in appps, etc., silence when trying to access articles linked in apps
Unless your phone isn't responding at all, I'd avoid the forced shutdown by holding down the home and lock button and just do a normal shutdown by holding down the lock button until the dialog pops up asking if you want to shutdown the phone. Maybe these two types of shutdown are different, but if they're not, a graceful shutdown, when it's available, will be safer. On 01/05/2014 09:49 AM, Scott Blanks wrote: You've very likely already exhausted these options, but make sure you are updated to the latest version of iOS. I have tried running the battery down and recharging, shutting down the iPhone and restarting, closing all apps, then reopening desired ones to reach what I wish to read or listen to, but nothing is working. Raul, I think you are one of those who knows how to cobble together the several apps to get the same information as the Seeing Eye app gives you in one app. I have never used it, the following statement is just what I gather from reading.I gather that its main plus is that the information one must glean from several apps can be gained using only one app, its simplicity to use, and its battery conservation, as compared to running several apps at once. For those not so good at using an iPhone as are you, this simplicity would be worth the subscription. Now that you have actually used it some, I am curious to know how you like it? Thanks for your opinion. Arnold Schmidt - Original Message - From: Raul A. Also, if you don't travel much and only need it occasionally, you could pay for those times you will need it, assuming of course that you will need it less than 6 or 7 times per year since then the cost per year or 3 years would start to be better anyway. Depends on what version of os you using and also what hardware you have. I found the similar issue with certain apps, Facebook in particular. It works for a minute or two, then it crashes. Sometime is the problem with VO itself, trying to catch up with the app, and sometime it crash totally. I also found that when you open the app , the app is refreshing the content, while voiceover still trying to read on where got highlighted on previous session. My observation is with ios7.4 and the latest facebook app, with vo and sight. The crashes usually happen with the ipad more so than the iphone. Joanne Chua The flip side of Inclusion is Exclusion. Also, whereas I used to be able, with no problem, to play podcasts or YouTube links from within Facebook, Twitter, etc., now I am shown that the track position is changing, that the time is elapsing, but there is no sound. Re: LG HBS730 Headphones, Do They Work With IOS 7?
Hello All, Sorry for the delayed response, I was able to test the LG HBS730 today on my iPhone 5s running both iOS 7.0.3 and then I upgraded to iOS 7.0.4 and while the delays I experienced under iOS 6 (latest version) on my 4s weren't as bad, it's still not as responsive as the LG HBS 700's. I'm not sure what LG did differently between the two devices, besides add voice prompts and I believe that it's Bluetooth 3.0. So, as a VoiceOver user we still have to get the LG HBS 700 as they work with VoiceOver with no lag or should I say barely noticeable lags. I had hoped that iOS 7 would have fixed this but it doesn't appear to have. Also, as I said it lags badly on a 5s so the hardware didn't make a difference either. I have a few other bluetooth speakers and none of them have a lagging problem with VoiceOver either. So... I'm not sure why the 730's do. Changing Location for Native Weather App
Hi, Everyone. When I got my iPod Touch, I was living in Honolulu. I'm still on the same island, but in a different city. How do I change my location so I can be sure I'm getting the conditions tracked for my location in the weather app. For example, it says 75 degrees is the high in Honolulu today, and that it'll be 64 tonight, but it might not be the case for where I'm at. Re: Changing Location for Native Weather App
The application should refresh on it's own on the location that you are in. Maybe for some odd reason you accidentally saved the city so that is why it is on it. You can go ahead and delete the city since you are no longer in Honolulu if that is the case have you considered the application called overcast? Re: Asking for Referrals for Calendar App
Fantastical 2 takes all your appointments from the native app. So, if you schedule an appointment in the native app, it will show up in Fantastical 2. If you schedule an appointment in Fantastical 2 and then look at the native calendar app, the appointment will be there as well.
