Re: how can one export a vcf file of iPhone addressbook?

2014-04-03 Thread Cris Ali

Thanks Anna,
I just discovered that there are a lot of apps on the app store that
allow you to do that. They would make a VCF file of all of your
contacts and allow you to email to yourself and use it as you wish. I
randomly

downloaded one of them and did just that.
Cheers,
Cris

Hi Cris,

Do you sync your iPhone address book with an app, such as Outlook in Windows or
Contacts on the Mac? If so, I think exporting the address book from there would
be easier than trying to do it on the phone. Each contact on the phone does
have a Share Contact button, so you could get individual contacts to other
devices that way. It's possible there's an app that can do it too, but I don't
know whether there is one.

Anna

Hi,

Also, how do you disable this from happening if you don’t want it to.

Hello cheryl,

The folks at National Braille Press thought your suggestion was a good one,
so I have compiled all the reference sections of getting Started with the
iPhone into a reference card, and NBP will publish it. I don't know when it
will be available, but I'll let everyone know when it's out. It will contain
a description of all the gestures and buttons and what they do, as well as
Bluetooth keyboard and braille display commands. Thanks for the great
suggestion.

there is a reference booklet available anywhere that lists bluetooth
keyboard commands, braille display commands and perhaps also gestures. I
realize these can change and that especially braille display commands

Thanks Anna,
I just discovered that there are a lot of apps on the app store that
allow you to do that. They would make a VCF file of all of your
contacts and allow you to email to yourself and use it as you wish. I
randomly
downloaded one of them and did just that.

Re: how can one export a vcf file of iPhone addressbook?

Hello D. J. You are trying to complicate a very simple task. I suggest that you
use the ICloud Control pannel instead of exporting contacts to a .vcf file. It
runs in the background and keeps your contacts synchronized between outlook and
your IOS device. If you need to use your contact data in documents you can use
the microsoft Word's Mail Merge facility. The ICloud Control Panel can also
keep your calendars in synch.

reading a book with BARD Mobile, pressing the remote button should stop and
start playback. However, even though I can get this to work sometimes, more
often than not pressing the remote button will start playing whatever song
is currently selected in my music. I can go back to BARD Mobile and press
the rewind button a few times or press the play button to start and stop
playback a few times and this will sometimes cause the remote button to be
in what I'll call BARD Mobile mode and work as expected. But I've yet
figured out the magic button presses to make this work every time. It seems
very random.

Does anyone else experience this behavior and have you come up with a
workaround to get the earpod remote button to work correctly with BARD

Cast Your Song

2014-04-03 Thread Traci Duncan
Hello, since getting my Chrome Cast, I've wanted a way to play my iTunes
library via my iPhone...

Well, yesterday, I came across this app. The thing is, it is brand new with no
reviews, and the description is sparse at best.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cast-your-song/id843329641?mt=8

Anyone out there on the tech side of life, that has thoughts about this app.

I imagine Apple would be reluctant to have an app that works with the iTunes
library, that is kind of Apple TV's job.

reading a book with BARD Mobile, pressing the remote button should stop and
start playback.

 Mobile?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Re: Question about iCloud backups

2014-04-03 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Tim,

Contact syncing would still work, but I'm pretty sure Downcast file copying
wouldn't. I would suggest that rather than turning off iCloud backup, one of
you delete your iCloud account and create a new one using a different email
address. This can and probably should be an iCloud address, and you'll be
walked through the process of creating one. That way, you'll have 5 GB of your
own for backup and can have separate contacts, documents, notes, etc. from your

Re: Talking goggles how to use it?

2014-04-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andrew,

Here's a little guide I wrote for Talking Goggles.

Cheers,

Anne

Talking Goggles

Set up

Open Settings and find Goggles. Click the button and set Save captured image to
Off; Speak out to On; Performance to Balanced.
Close Settings.

Open Goggles.
The logic of the buttons is that they tell you what will happen if you click
them.
Set Change language now to English and the last button to Still camera. Goggles
is now in video mode.
When the middle button is saying Record, the video is paused.
When the video is running, the Flash button becomes visible. When it says just
Flash, the flash is off. Flash off means that flash is off.

To identify an object or piece of text, make sure there's enough light and
double tap Record, then hold the iPhone about a foot away from the item in
question. If the light level is low, put the flash on.
Be patient.

RE: Keynote from iPhone to Apple TV?

2014-04-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

Since iOS 7 the Airplay button has been moved into the Control Centre. There
are still apps, one example is Audible, which have an Airplay button in the
app, but Apple has removed the Airplay button from apps like Music, Videos
etc. and you just have to touch the status bar and swipe up with 3 fingers
to bring up Control Centre to get to I t.

Airplay is at the bottom right above the bottom row of icons. I usually
touch the bottom left of the phone where the Flashlight button is and then
swipe left once to get to it.

Once you double tap on it you will see your Airplay devices and you can also
enable Airplay mirroring FOR THE Apple TV which sends your entire iPhone
screen to the Apple TV.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Zoom iq5 microphone

2014-04-03 Thread Neal Ewers
A couple comments on this microphone.

One thing I didn’t like about this microphone is that you needed to use
headphones when you were using it because voiceover no longer comes from the
phone or iPad speaker, but from the headphone connection on the microphone. I
wanted something I could just slap on the phone and go, but having to always
have headphones around was a bother for me.

Also, I have owned two of these and they have both been returned. They
occasionally made popping noises. It is quite possible that even though I was
using it with the bottom of my case cut off so the microphone was as snug a fit
as it could be, that there was some interruption of the signal because the
lightning connecter seemed quite short. I’m not sure that this is the reason,
but it would be nice to see what they have come up with as an adapter. But
again, there is the need for headphones, which sometimes you would want and
other tines not. An option to either play through headphones or speaker would
be nice.

I heard back from Zoom about the IQ5 microphone.

They know it does not work with cases like the Otterbox Defender. They also
know it does not work with extension cables.

The last line in their note said that an accessory may be coming down the line
to resolve this.

RE: Keynote from iPhone to Apple TV?

Thanks. Do you also happen to know if I can use airplay to show the

Thanks Anna,
I just discovered that there are a lot of apps on the app store that
allow you to do that. They would make a VCF file of all of your
contacts and allow you to email to yourself and use it as you wish. I
randomly
downloaded one of them and did just that.

You have to add to the library. I don't know if you can do it with an entire

RE: Zoom iq5 microphone

2014-04-03 Thread Neal Ewers
Richard, they did send me a replacement which I also had to return. I did not
ask them to send me a third microphone.

I am not sure about the length of the warranty.

I suspect the addition of the speaker switch will be harder to push for than a
physical problem with the plug. Sighted users do not have to worry about
voiceover and thus will likely use headphones only if they want to monitor or
play back the recording in stereo. You can always unplug the microphone and
hear it through the speaker if you’re just wanting to listen. But, I will make
this known to the developer. It would be nice to come up with scenarios that
would cause people who see to want this as well. I can do that, but if people
have suggestions, perhaps they could write to me off list.

Thanks.

Talking Goggles

Set up

Open Settings and find Goggles. Click the button and set Save captured
image to Off; Speak out to On; Performance to Balanced.

Close Settings.

Open Goggles.
The logic of the buttons is that they tell you what will happen if you
click them.
Set Change language now to English and the last button to Still
camera. Goggles is now in video mode.

When the middle button is saying Record, the video is paused.
When the video is running, the Flash button becomes visible. When it
says just Flash, the flash is off. Flash off means that flash is off.

To identify an object or piece of text, make sure there's enough light
and double tap Record, then hold the iPhone about a foot away from the
item in question. If the light level is low, put the flash on.

Be patient.

Re: Zoom iq5 microphone

2014-04-03 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

I agree that the lightning adapter is to short, and that it can course some
problems. I look forward to see what solution they will come up with.

The problem with headphones are known from most microphones you can conect to
the IPhone. It is not a really problem for me, because I use braille without
speech most of the time, but I know that can be a problem to many VoiceOver
users.

I really like the headphone jack on the IQ5. I like it for what it is a little
very handy device, that can be in my bag, it is not perfect, but if I need to
record something I can do it without thinking oh I have forgot my olympus ls100.

When we are speaking about microphones has anyone tried the røde mic for
IPhones called ixy.

Best regards Annie.

headphones when you were using it because voiceover no longer comes from the
phone or iPad speaker, but from the headphone connection on the microphone. I
wanted something I could just slap on the phone and go, but having to always
have headphones around was a bother for me.

Also, I have owned two of these and they have both been returned. They
occasionally made popping noises. It is quite possible that even though I was
using it with the bottom of my case cut off so the microphone was as snug a
fit as it could be, that there was some interruption of the signal because
the lightning connecter seemed quite short. I'm not sure that this is the
reason, but it would be nice to see what they have come up with as an
adapter. But again, there is the need for headphones, which sometimes you
would want and other tines not. An option to either play through headphones
 or speaker would be nice.

You need to see if there is a Google Transit Feed for Sidney. If so,

Hi steve, I set bus stops as pois all the time, as there doesn't appear to
be a google transit database available for Sydney Australia. Is there a way
to get them to provide a database to Sendero for inclusion, I think the only
areas in australia that have gogle transit databases used in sendero gps are
adelaide and perth.

On 30 Mar 2014, at 8:54 am, Steve pipeguy...@gmail.com wrote:

Eric,

Have you checked out the Sendero GPS app?

I don't have it on my iPhone, but I do use Sendero GPS on a Braille
notetaker. Depending on where you are located, your transit company might
have their stops programmed in the google Transit database; Sendero has
made many of those available. It will list every bus stop in the system
with its location to within 20 feet.

If that is not available, I make a private POI when I get off the bus at
that stop. Then, when I leave my destination, I set that POI as my
destination and can always get to within ten feet of the stop.

I wonder how you might have handled this situation.

I was going for an appointment in an area and office building I have not
been to before. I needed to transfer busses and then get off where I have
not taken the bus before. I then had to find a stop when leaving the
appointment.

I have most of the usual navigational tools talked about here. I had two
people look at my screens and use their own devices to try to help orient
me

to the situations, and we all came up way off.

When I changed busses first, I needed to know where the next stop would
be.
Whether it was a simple pole or bench or shelter would have been most
useful

to know, too. Then, I needed to know which stop would be best so I could
find a cross walk. I knew where the building I was going was, but how
about

where the door was in relationship to the street corner, parking lot etc.
Coming home, I needed to know where the returning bus stop was and again,
it

would have been most helpful to know if it was a pole, bench or shelter.

After a horrible experience getting to my appointment, I did call the
transit service and asked if they could tell where my stop would be, etc.
I
don't know what tools they had, but I was told approximately where it was
in

relationship to a street crossing and that it was a shelter.

Given those circumstances, can anyone think how I could have gotten that
information on my own or how I could have had others find the information.
Of course, I could simply call the transit company and hope they always
can

find the stop information, but I still would like to know the layout of
buildings.

I read things all the time about how people use maps and street views to
tell virtually everything about locations, but it seems when I need that
information I don't know how to find it or ask others to look for it.

All ideas how you might handle these situations will be most appreciated.
I

should say I have very good cane skills and can generally orient myself to
any situation. I would just like to be able to do so faster and easier
using

today's technologies, if possible.

Eric

That is the default behavior, if you want to turn this off go to Settings,
Notification Center, Messages.
Almost at the bottom look for Repeat Alerts. This will say Once which
means your alerts repeat once after 2 minutes.
Double tap on it and set it to Never if you want to just get a single
alert. Your choices are Never, Once, Twice 3 Times, 5 Times and 10 Times
and it will always repeat in 2 minute intervals.

RE: Keynote from iPhone to Apple TV?

2014-04-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

I assume your Notes are in some other app and therefore I assume this
wouldn't work because if you do Airplay Mirroring whatever people see on the
Apple TV is whatever you do on your phone. But I don't use Keynote nor do I
have the need to present material in this way. I guess this is where it
would come in handy to have an iPad and an iPhone.

Re: Keynote from iPhone to Apple TV?

2014-04-03 Thread Alex Hall
I think he means presenter notes. Basically, the slides you see on the iPhone
are what your viewers see. However, on the iPhone only, you have notes that
you've added in. I've heard of this working when using the iPhone as a remote,
driving a Keynote display on a Mac, but not all on one device. I may well be
wrong, but I'm not sure you can do this via Airplay. I saw an Apple article
that talked about using Presenter mode on an iPad, while the iPad was plugged
into a display via an adapter, so that might be one route. If I were you, I'd
do more googling on the topic before purchasing any adapters or anything though.

reading numbers documents on windows

2014-04-03 Thread William Windels
hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to edit numbers-documents on a windows
platform?
I know that you can import/export ms excel documents in numbers but you need to
export the document to ms excel every time you save changes and this is not a
option for me.

perhaps there is a plugin for a office suite on windows or there is a other
program on windows that can edit numbers-documents?

thx for any hints

Hi steve, I set bus stops as pois all the time, as there doesn't appear to be
a google transit database available for Sydney Australia. Is there a way to
get them to provide a database to Sendero for inclusion, I think the only
areas in australia that have gogle transit databases used in sendero gps are
 adelaide and perth.

Have you checked out the Sendero GPS app?

I don't have it on my iPhone, but I do use Sendero GPS on a Braille
notetaker. Depending on where you are located, your transit company might
have their stops programmed in the google Transit database; Sendero has made
many of those available. It will list every bus stop in the system with its
 location to within 20 feet.

I had two
people look at my screens and use their own devices to try to help orient me
to the situations, and we all came up way off.

When I changed busses first, I needed to know where the next stop would be.
Whether it was a simple pole or bench or shelter would have been most useful
to know, too. Then, I needed to know which stop would be best so I could
find a cross walk. I knew where the building I was going was, but how about
where the door was in relationship to the street corner, parking lot etc.
Coming home, I needed to know where the returning bus stop was and again, it
would have been most helpful to know if it was a pole, bench or shelter.

After a horrible experience getting to my appointment, I did call the
transit service and asked if they could tell where my stop would be, etc. I
don't know what tools they had, but I was told approximately where it was in
relationship to a street crossing and that it was a shelter.

Given those circumstances, can anyone think how I could have gotten that
information on my own or how I could have had others find the information.
Of course, I could simply call the transit company and hope they always can
find the stop information, but I still would like to know the layout of

I would just like to be able to do so faster and easier using
 today's technologies, if possible.

 Eric
