Re: Just got an iPad mini and I have a few questions
The bit I can say, though not got my iPad Mini mk1 now; but no, no calculator, but there has been some good recommendations. FB and things: you have to note that an iPad screen is laid out more like the gui on PCs, which in this case means, there is a strip down the left hand side which holds selector or menu type items, and the rest of the screen hold the detail of whatever you double-tapped on down the left hand side. I remember finding buttons for things lined up along the top too. Since Pads have enough space to do this kind of thing, they do. Re: Just got an iPad mini and I have a few questions
Gen, there is no calculator on the iPad, however can I mention two apps I have and you may wish to try. VoCalc from the makers of MBraille Mpaja. Fraction Calculator from the developers whose name I cannot remember sorry. It was posted on here a while back hence me knowing of it. As for the native Facebook app I will just answer the one question. You need to chat using the Messenger app by Facebook. We all should have received a notification that the messages feature will be discontinuing from the native app any time now and thus encouraging us to use the Messenger app which happens to be quite accessible. Hope this helps. Christopher Hallsworth Student at the Hadley School for the Blind www.hadley.edu On 25/05/2014 05:09, Jen Colley wrote: Hi, I just got a 32 gb iPad mini and I am using voice over. What To Do If You Are Recieving Unwanted iMessages
Hello All, This is for all iOS iMessage users. Yesterday, I posted about what to do if you are an A T T customer and you receive unwanted SMS SPAM. Now of course, in iOS 7.x, you can block the offending sender of incoming SMS messages be they standard text messages or iMessages directly from your iOS device. If that works for you, great. As for me, however, merely blocking something locally on my device does not seem to make me feel better. That is why I did some research and discovered the short code to which A T T customers are supposed to forward their unwanted SPAM in order to give A T T a heads-up on who is gaming its network. What I did not mention in my previous post on this, is that, apparently, none of the US wireless providers have any control over what is sent via iMessage. Consequently, if you forward an iMessage to the A T T SPAM alert short code number (and I assume this is true for Verizon Wireless as well) you will receive a thank you message requesting that you reply with either the telephone or short code number of the offending spammer. What? Many iMessages don't display a phone number; in fact, they most often display an email address. Consequently, if you are receiving unwanted iMessage SPAM, and you want to report it to Apple in addition to blocking is locally on your device, you must do the following in accordance with Apple's instructions. Interestingly, I checked with approximately 20 or so people, today, all of whom use iMessage on three of the US's four major wireless carriers including A T T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. All of the T-Mobile customers I know are Android users. Hmm. Anyway, many of those with whom I contacted reported either having received their first iMessage SPAM or an increase in the number of iMessages received, this week. But I digress. Getting back on point, I followed the instructions below in order to report my iMessage SPAM and now I feel much better. I hope that after reading the following instructions, you will feel better as well. Mark From Apple: Reporting unwanted messages sent from iMessage If you're seeing unwanted iMessages (spam) in Messages app, you can report those to Apple. To report unwanted iMessage messages to Apple, please send an email with the following details to: imessage.s...@icloud.com 1. Include a screenshot of the message you have received. 2. Include the full email address or phone number you received the unwanted message from. 3. Include the date and time that you received the message. To take a screenshot: To take a screenshot on your iOS device, press and release the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time. The screenshot is added to your Camera Roll album. To take a screenshot in OS X, simultaneously press the Command + Shift and the number 3 key on your keyboard. The screenshot is saved to your Desktop folder. Additional InformationNote: Report unwanted (spam) SMS and MMS type messages to your cellular provider. Contact your carrier for additional details. Look in the Messages conversation thread to determine if a message was sent via iMessage. Messages sent via iMessage are labeled as iMessage above the message in the text field. SMS and MMS type messages read Text Message instead. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Getting rid of United States calindar
Hi Everyone, I was checking through my calendars and noticed that even though I have my regional holidays calendar, I'm also somehow subscribed to the United States calendar. I don't live in the States so the American holidays aren't part of my life, but I can't figure out how to get rid of them. In case this helps, the calendar is listed next to my Gmail calendar and it says Shared by United States holidays. How do I change this? Is this true with everyone? Ootunes Scheduled Recordings
I have been successful using this, if the station doesn't go off line... My questions are: Do I have to leave the app open on screen? Can I leave the device on the home screen and locked; not completely shut down but just press the power button. If I was in another app, such as BARD Mobile will my recording take place, whether or not BARD is actually playing at the time? The documentation I have found seems fairly sketchy. I am not sure how much the app is being supported, but my next step might be trying to contact the developer, if I am the only one here recording with Ootunes. All thanks for any help! Hi, Thank you very much. After I got this iPhone I was wondering if I made a mistake by getting it because I didn't know how I was going to answer it. I got the phone because Verizon told me I could get it for 99 cents since I had a haven phone which they considered a basic phone. RE: What To Do If You Are Recieving Unwanted iMessages
Incidentally, I am indeed a T-Mobile customer using an iPhone 5. DJ -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of M. Taylor Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2014 3:52 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: What To Do If You Are Recieving Unwanted iMessages Hello All, This is for all iOS iMessage users. Re: Ootunes Scheduled Recordings
Hi, To my understanding the app has to be open and running to start recording. I read the app cannot run in background if device is running low on memory. I am pretty sure you cannot listen to an other app with audio or even answer a call without stopping the recording. The developer is very quick to respond so, if you want, write him and maybe he'll update it to make it run more efficiently in the background. My problem with these recordings is that I found it impossible to rename them. It used to work but, according to the developer, since iOS 7 there's a bug preventing this. That's all I know about this. Good luck using it: Best, Ioana Sent from my iPhone On May 25, 2014, at 9:43 AM, SSEric sseri...@gmail.com wrote: I have been successful using this, if the station doesn't go off line... Hi Terrie, It probably won't help on the treadmill. I haven't tried it, but at the very least it might tell you how long you walked. I'm not sure yet if it pauses while you aren't actually walking and changing locations. It might be worth a try. I'm guessing that it won't give you the distance walked since it tracks you via GPS. I have an older model of the aftershocks which are wired. There is no battery low indicator that I've noticed. They say the charge lasts around 15 hours, so I charge them once a week or so. That seems to work so far. I don't think I've let the battery run down all the way yet, so if I let it go dead I'll let the list know if there's an audible indicator. I've only had them a couple of weeks. I really like them. God bless! RE: Good free app
There are many apps in the app store which notify you via a push message about apps which usually cost something, but which are free for a day as part of a promotion. DJ mentioned Apps Gone Free, another one is called “App a Day”. Whether the app that is free is accessible is anybody’s guess unless of course the developer mentions Voiceover, but since whichever app is free for that day is, well, “free” you can just download it if it interests you and try it. If it is not accessible or if you end up not liking it just delete it off your phone and all you lost is 10 minutes of your time. Below are the links for the 2 apps mentioned above: Apps Gone Free by AppAdvice.com – 5 Stars: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apps-gone-free-best-daily/id470693788?mt=8 You can, by the way, also go to their website at www.AppAdvice.com http://www.AppAdvice.com and read about free apps and other Apple related news. The name of the app is Walk Log. I tried it today and it works out very well. Most of it's features are very accessible while using voice over. It is a navigation app which logs and tracks your walks while you are out. After the walk, it will tell you the time that you walked and the distance traveled. If you save the log, it will also save the route that you took. It will probably only be free for a short time longer if this is something you are interested in, you may want to hurry up and grab it before you have to pay for it in the app store again. RE: Answering my iPhone 4S without my blue tooth mini keyboard?
Conni, When did you get your 4S? I assume you mean it was 99 Cents with a 2-year contract? If it was recently Verizon gave you a pretty bad deal since the 4S was discontinued last September and the iPhone 5 became the new free phone on contract. Anyhow, if you have and are able to use an iPod Touch you really should have little difficulty with an iPhone as it is very much the same as an iPod Touch with the phone aspect included of course. If you also have a landline I would recommend that you call yourself a few times and explore the screen to get a sense of what buttons you have and where they are. One little tip is to press the volume up or down button once quickly when the phone starts to ring. This will silence the phone's ringer and it is easier to touch around the screen and hear what Voiceover is saying. Try it both when the screen is locked and you get a call and also when you have the phone unlocked and you get a call since you'll find slightly different options. If you don't have a landline just ask a friend or family member to call you next time you are with another person. Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
Hi Everyone, I was recently having a discussion with a friend about how to type on the on-screen keyboard of the iPhone. Personally, I don't particularly like to use a special program for this like, for instance, mBraill or Fleksy. I just want to use the regular keyboard. Dictation can be useful, but of course, sometimes, it's just nice to be able to type something relatively privately. I have built up some speed over the past 3 years, but I would like to get faster. I generally hold my phone in my left hand, and use my right index finger to type, anchoring my thumb down where the connector is at the bottom of the phone. I'm interested to know how others who type using the regular on-screen keyboard, enter your text. I do happen to use Touch Typing mode, but I would also be interested in what typing mode you use. And, does anyone else besides me just use the regular on-screen keyboard for their typing needs? Thanks! Desi -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: Rotor command on the QWERTY keyboard
This discussion is about using a regular external Bluetooth keyboard. The term Qwerty keyboard refers to the standard US keyboard which has the letters QWERTY as the first 6 letters in the top row of the keyboard. 2 of the best keyboards in my opinion are the Logitech K811 and the Apple Wireless keyboard. I owned an Apple Wireless keyboard first, but bought a Logitech K811 recently and prefer it because it has a slider switch to turn the keyboard on and off whereas the Apple Wireless keyboard has a button on one end which gets easily pushed if you carry the keyboard in a bag or backpack. Since I also have an Apple TV I like the fact that I can pair my Logitech K811 with up to 3 devices and simply press F1, F2 and F3 to select which device I want to use it with. Since you have an iPhone and an iPod Touch, you could pair both and whichever device you apir first is available with F1, the second device you pair would be on F2. The Logitech K811 is, however, ?$70 (on Amazon, it can be more in stores) and some people on the list also quite like the Amazon Basics Bluetooth keyboard which you can buy on Amazon for I think around $25. Fixed TuneIn Favorites Problem
Hi all. I fixed my problem with TuneIn not showing my favorites. I discovered that for some reason the app logged into my gmail account which is a Windows Live account and thus me seeing only what my contacts were listening to. I discovered this because I also have a TuneIn Radio app on my PS3 and it had all my favorites on there. What I did to fix the problem is sign out of the account and just logged in with the account I created before the update. Now my favorites are back. I recommend anyone that is still having this issue try this and see if you get your favorites back. The only tiny thing I'd add is that the virtual keyboard on the iDevices can also be referred to as a querty keyboard since it's keys are laid out just as if you were using a standard querty typewriter or keyboard. factory reset anyone?
Hi, I just called about my iphone 5s and battery drain issue. Yesterday afternoon I charged my phone. It was up to 100%. As of right now, it is at 34%. It has been sitting on the desk, locked screen on, and no activity. Everything that could be turned off was turned off. It seems I have two options. I can get someone to drive me to Austin, which is not convenient, and go to an Apple store and ask for an extended battery test. Or, I can do a factory reset to see if that clears up the issue. I am using 7.1.1. If I decided to try the factory reset, are there any pit falls I need to know about? At least, my iphone is still under warranty. RE: Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
Hello Desi, This is an interesting question. As for me, I use Touch Typing Mode. Generally speaking, when entering strings of text, my phone sits in the crook of my left hand. That is, it rests at the base of my thumb. This allows me to use both my left thumb to access the left side of the onscreen keyboard while using my right index finger to access the right side of the onscreen keyboard. If I am only going to enter one or two letters in a reply such as OK, I simply lay the phone in the palm of my left hand and tap out the letters with my right index finger. Now that I think about it, I do find it curious that, as a left-handed person, I choose to use my right index finger as opposed to my left when entering single characters. Hmm. Oh well. Hmm. Oh well. Re: factory reset anyone?
Back up to iCloud if you haven't done so already. Then you can go to settings general reset erase all content and settings and double tap erase iPhone button twice. You will be asked for your Apple Id password if Find My iPhone is turned on to verify this is your device about to be erased. Then at the setup screens choose restore from iCloud backup. Everything that could be turned off was turned off. It seems I have two options. I can get someone to drive me to Austin, which is not convenient, and go to an Apple store and ask for an extended battery test. Or, I can do a factory reset to see if that clears up the issue. Re: Putting my book marks on my iPad mini
If you sync both your iPhone and your iPad with your PC or Mac then I would think you could do this through iTunes. Last I knew, Safari wasn't accessible on Windows, so if you have a PC and not a Mac, then I'm not sure how well this would work. Here's an article on how to do this with a Mac http://www.maciverse.com/sync-safari-bookmarks-to-your-ipad.html I'm not trying to talk anyone into using iCloud, I don't use it myself, but this is exactly why such cloud services exist, namely to have content consistent between separate devices. You can configure iCloud, so if you don't want to use it for anything else, you could still use it to sync your Safari data. On 5/25/2014 2:18 PM, Jen Colley wrote: I don’t use icloud though. Re: Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
Hi, Thanks so much for that great description of how you type! I have been thinking about trying it that way, so I'll let you know how it goes if and when I do! Your reasoning for using the On-Screen keyboard is much like mine! Thanks also to all others who have shared their typing methods! This is a really interesting discussion! Desi On May 25, 2014, at 2:06 PM, Christopher J Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote: I generally use the on screen keyboard, but that's just because I forced myself to use it when I got my iPhone. I wanted to become proficient with it before I started experimenting with other apps and input methods. Similarly, I wanted to check out the Notes, Calendar and other built in apps before comparing them to apps I could get from the App Store. I'm not opposed to grabbing any apps from the App Store though. There's a reason why there are like a million apps in the App Store and it's all about finding the ones that you prefer and make using your phone easier. I still use some built in apps, but I've also replaced a few with App Store apps that have features you don't get in the built in apps or I just prefer using a bit. I haven't gotten around to checking out the different alternative keyboards. As far as typing, I put my two hands together palms up with the fingers from my right hand over the fingers from my left hand. I rest the iPhone in my palms and type with my thumbs. I use the touch typing method. With practice, I'm pretty good at just landing on the character I want to type. I don't do as much hunting and pecking as I did when I just used my pointer finger. When using my pointer finger, I preferred the split typing method since I would tend to slide my finger from character to character, and I didn't want to lift it from the screen. I think with two thumbs, the bottom corners and edges of the iPhone in your palm, you have more physical spacial references making it easier for your thumbs to just know where to land to find the character you want. When using my pointer finger, I don't think I ad as many physical points of reference, so I didn't want to lose my place by lifting it from the screen. Re: Getting rid of United States calindar
Hmm, I just looked into this, and here's what I found. I'm still investigating, so this may be a bit rambling. When I double tap on the Calendars button at the bottom of the calendar app, I see US Holidays listed twice. The first time is next to my Google calendar and it's under the heading I labelled Google. I suspect this is what you're seeing, and I assume this was added by Apple with a recent update. I don't see how to delete it, but you can unselect it by double tapping it. This will keep those holidays from showing up on your calendar view. I also have US Holidays listed in my other section. I'm sure this is the holiday calendar I subscribed to manually. The weird thing is that I don't see it now when I go into Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars and click on my subscribed calendars button. I do see US Holidays listed twice in my calendar view though, for example, I see Memorial Day listed twice for tomorrow. I obviously don't need this calendar any more, and I can unselect it, but I don't see how to delete it. Obviously, more investigation is required. Try putting it at 10% or so and see if that makes any difference. - Original Message - From: Crystal French To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2014 4:55 PM Subject: factory reset anyone? Re: Fitbit Flex versus Up and some questions re Fitbit orientation
One thing I recommend is to go over to appleVis and search for fitbit flex. David Woodbridge did an excellent podcast on the flex. Explaining how to put the device inside the band might be difficult, but actually doing it is pretty easy. ;) I'll give it a try. The device has a slanted side where the lights flash. The top side of the band has a hard plastic strip that feels like a little window. You want the slanted side of the device going up into that little window. So the lights flash through it. So I wriggle the device up into that side first, then, gently press the other end of the device up into the other side. :) That wasn't a very good description. Definitely listen to David's podcast. He'll describe how to hold the band device in your hand. Re: Putting my book marks on my iPad mini
Did you follow the link I sent and make sure iTunes was configured to sync your Safari bookmarks? Here's another link which includes instructions for a PC as well as for a Mac, although in this case, they seem to be the same: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/synchronize-safari-bookmarks-notes-and-ipad-advanc.html Here's the pertinent paragraph: If you choose to set up your iPad data synchronization manually, you can synchronize Safari bookmarks and notes on your iPad with your Mac or PC. Select your iPad in the sidebar on the left side of the iTunes screen. Then click the Info button, which is to the right of the Summary button. The Info pane has five sections: Contacts, Calendars, Mail Accounts, Other, and Advanced. Sync Safari bookmarks and notes on iPad The Other section has a mere two items: Sync Safari Bookmarks and Sync Notes. Select the check box for Sync Safari Bookmarks if you want to sync your Safari bookmarks; don’t select it if you don’t. Just so you know, the iPad syncs bookmarks with the following web browsers: • Mac: Safari • PC: Microsoft Internet Explorer and Safari Note that this will work with IE on your PC, so you don't need to worry about installing and using Safari just to sync your bookmarks. I assume this will also bring in and merge any bookmarks you have in Internet Explorer. Re: Missing emails from exchange account
If you're trying to connect to an Exchange server then you wouldn't use either POP3 or IMAP. Exchange doesn't use either of these protocols; it has it's own protocol. I don't use Exchange, except at the office where everything is set up for me, but I'd think you'd go into Outlook and create a new account to point to your Exchange server. There are others on list who use Exchange, so maybe they can help. I'm not sure how it works with Exchange, but in IMAP, you can copy messages into a folder on your PC, and if it's an IMAP folder, then it will be synced with the server. It won't happen automatically since you'll have to copy the message from your POP3 account over to a folder in your IMAP account. Re: Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
Hi Desi, I use the on-screen keyboard. I have one of those tactile screen protectors that are sold by the A.T. Guys. This allows me to orient my fingers, jusing the F and the J keys on the home row pretty quickly. I hold the phone in my right hand and use my left index finger to input the keystrokes, and, like you, I use my thumb as an anchor. (I apparently have some arthritis in that joint, so sometimes I have to discontinue my anchoring! Like you, after a few years, I am a fairly fast typist with the on-screen keyboard. I know that others use a blue tooth QWERTY keyboard, and some people use refreshable braille note-takers, but I haven't paired my phone with any of these devices, mostly because I don't want to have to carry one more thing with me when I'm out and about and using my IPhone. Fascinating. I type using only my right index finger, holding the phone in my left hand. I have speed dots on my phone and it's easier to feel them with the index finger. I tried using my thumbs and boy, did that feel awkward. For those who use their thumbs, do you use them to double tap also or do you use your index fingers? Just curious. If I'm typing a long text, I use MBraille, but for shorter, maybe one sentence things I often use the on-screen keyboard. I'm going to play around with other methods of entering text just for fun. Re: Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
If I'm typing, I'll double tap and split tap with my thumbs. If I'm mostly just navigating, such as when I'm pulling up an app or changing some settings, then I'll typically hold my iPhone in my left hand and flick, swipe and double tap with my right pointer finger. When I start typing though, I switch to using my thumbs. On 5/25/2014 7:10 PM, Paul and Paula Jordan wrote: Fascinating. Re: Typing On The iPhone's OnScreen Keyboard
In touch typing, when you place your finger on the character you want to enter, you just need to lift your finger to enter that character. This is quicker and less effort than double tapping the character you want to enter after you land on it. I also find split tapping to be pretty efficient, but I prefer touch typing when using my thumbs and split tapping when using one pointer finger, although I don't often switch to split typing when I use one pointer finger to type since I do it so seldomly. Ultimately the only benefit to touch typing is if you prefer it over the other methods. Give it a try and see if you like it or not. There's no right answers, just different options and the ability to use whatever you prefer. Hi there, I know this is not for everyone but, if you have any facility to write in braille, than using the mbraille app is faster than manny sighted iPhone users I've seen. I can almost type at the speed of using a purkins brailer with the only difference that I make more mistakes that I have to correct in my haste. i also have a bluetooth keyboard but find myself rarely using it because it's very convenient to just use 1 device. Donna Hi Everyone, I was recently having a discussion with a friend about how to type on the on-screen keyboard of the iPhone. You can also get lds media on demand and stream it, but the only way you are going to get the music is to download it from the web site. You could subscribe to general conference through a podcast and download it that way. There is also an app called LDS media on demand where you can stream it. Those are the two ways I can think of other than just downloading it from LDS.org. Re: Answering my iPhone 4S without my blue tooth mini keyboard?
You can also achieve the same effect of silencing the ringer vy hitting the sleep/wake button. You might also want to go into the sound settings and turn the change with buttons setting to off. This will ensure that, no matter what you do with the volume buttons, your ringer volume will always stay the same. Thanks, Ari On May 25, 2014, at 2:31 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Conni, When did you get your 4S? After I got this iPhone I was wondering if I made a mistake by getting it because I didn't know how I was going to answer it. So, I said to myself what the heck for 99 cents what do I have to lose. Now, I like it just as much if not better then my iPod touch. Thanks again.
