RE: Extreme iTunes Frustration: Someone please Assist
Hi Christine, You already got some advice from Larry and Kimberly. However, I think that what is happening here is that you have Music set to on under Show All in Settings, iTunes and App Store. This would then show all the music you ever purchased from iTunes even if it is not downloaded to your phone. Once again, go to Settings, iTunes and App Store and then find the heading Show All. Flick right once from there and see if music is turned on, if so double tap on it to turn it off and see if that fixes your issue. As for looking at your music in iTunes, it is much better to use the column browser. In order to do that you have to make sure the Songs radio button is checked and not one of the others like Albums, Artists or Playlists. Once that is done, go to the View menu and find the Column Browser, submenu. Expand it with the right arrow and tell it to Show Column Browser. The shortcut is Control+Shift+B. Now you have 4 list views as follows: Genre, Artist, Album and then the actual Music list view with all your songs. If, however, you select a particular artist, you will only see all the songs from that artist in the music list view. If you select an album, only the songs from that album will show. I really like how that works. I have been slogging through the heaps of iTunes issues posts and cannot find anything helpful either. I have a ton of songs that are syncing to my iPHone which I do not want. I have them all unchecked in artists and albums, and only have selected those songs I wish to sync. I have sync selected albums, artists, and genres selected. iTunes Match is off. I am still syncing songs, artists, and albums I do not want synced. Additionally, when I go into the albums grid on iTunes, it is only showing a tiny portion of my albums. I get to a certain album and there is no more, and I can't get beyond that point. Thanks for any help. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: An issue with my new PC and my IPhone.
Hi Victor, This is a new computer Liz just got and there is no such thing as a computer with a USB 1.1 port and hasn't been for many years. As for USB hubs, I have several of them and all of them charge my phone just fine. Of course the computer they are connected to has to be on, but as long as it is it's no problem. The one in my office is about 50 feet away from the computer and I am using four 15 foot active USB extention cables to get across that distance and at the end of cable 4 I have a 7-port powered USB hub. It also charges my phone. This problem can also happen if you're not using a USB 2.0 port, as anything less than 2.0 does not have the power requirements to charge and keep the phone alive while on the port. Having said that, you should make sure you're not plugging the phone into a USB hub, powered or not, as USB hubs don't generally have the power needs to charge the phone, so they advise using a USB 2.0, or 3.0 port directly on your computer, or use the USB charger that came with the phone and plug it into a wall outlet to charge. Since you're trying to back-up or sync with your computer, the last option of a wall outlet doesn't apply to you, but plugging into a lesser USB port, or a USB hub does apply. I'm not exactly sure how you can devise whether you're USB port is 2.0 or not, unless you have the original manual that came with your computer, or possibly there's a tool out there that will tell you what you have. I can't readily remember if BellArc Advisor gives you this kind of information, but as it's a free program, it may be worth running to make sure. Just do a Google search for Belarc advisor download, and the first or second hit will be the download page for the tool It's 100% accessible, and easy to use with no special set up needed. Good luck. I assume it's the removal of ads since this seems to be the same with TextSync which is also $2.99. Anyhow, you can get the free version instead of the Pro and if you want pay the $2.99 as an in-app purchase. Re: TextSync - Send text from a Windows computer to your iOS device
You might be able to do this with Text Sync as well. In the app there is a text field. I presume you could write something in there. Then there is a paste button which seems to be always available. So maybe this is to transfer the entered text to the Windows computer. Or it could just behave like a regular paste function. Just some observations from an early adopter. This app allows you to type whatever you want on your Windows computer and have the text instantly show on your iDevice. You can send text from your iPod or iPhone with or without your iDevice being attached to your computer and you do not need iTunes running. Here's how you use this app. You type in a url into the Run dialogue of your Windows computer (you only have to do this once and save the path as a shortcut on your desktop etc). You are then presented with a very simple and easy to use screen with a single edit field. You type in your message into the edit field then down arro to a send button, and your text will instantaneously show on the TextSync app on your iOS device. You can now use the Copy button in the TextSync app to copy the text to the iOS clipboard and move the text into any other app. I launched Internet Explorer on my Windows desktop computer and copied a Wikipedia article with 137,000 characters and pasted in the desktop version of the TextSync edit field, and it took only a couple of seconds for the text to be copied to my iPod--it is definitely a fast little app. Again, it is important to Note that your iDevice does not have to be physically connected to your desktop at all. Nice!. Since I want to be able to fill my iPod with very important private information, I contacted the app developer to inquire about the security of his app. Here is his reply/explanation: Hello, The security is ensured by P2P direct link via IP, thus there is no chance to perform a mid-person attack (which happens when you attempt to connect to a server by entering domain name, which need DNS servers to resolve the IP address). RE: TextSync - Send text from a Windows computer to your iOS device
Hello Joseph, First, I want to thank you for posting this information. Second, I have been reading all the messages thus far posted to this thread and find all of the comments most interesting. Third, as for me, my solution for sharing text between my Windows-based devices and my iOS/OSX devices is to simply use the Notes app, which, as doubtless you are aware, may be accessed via iCloud. On my Apple devices, I have the notes app set to store everything in iCloud. When I want to quickly share info either to or from my Windows-based devices, I simply access my iCloud account from my favorite Windows-based browser and open the Notes app. What I celebrate is the fact that there is something for everyone. Thank you again. Re: Extreme iTunes Frustration Continued: Update
Hi Christine, To delete all the music on your phone go into settings, general, usage. Find music and you should see how much space is currently being used for music. Double tap and you will find yourself on a screen that says something like all music. Do a single finger flick just as you would to delete a message in your mail app or any number of other apps. Now when you back out of that screen, under usage it should say something like no content. I hope that helps. RE: Extreme iTunes Frustration Continued: Update
Christine, You don't select songs in your music library, you do so in your device section. Go to your device in iTunes, tab until you find the music radio button and check it. Now tab until you find Sync All Music and see if it is checked. If it is then this is your problem right there. Tab a couple more times until you hear Sync Selected Playlists, Genres, Artists and Albums and check it. Now tab more and you will find list views for playlists, genre, artist and album. Decide how you want to sync your music, e.g. by album or artist, then in that list view arrow through the available selection and check what you want. If this is still not precise enough, e.g. if you want songs from Dire Straits but not all songs from Dire Straits, then you are probably best off to make playlists with exactly the songs you want (that is done in the music library section of iTunes) and then sync only these playlists. To delete all music simply tell iTunes you don't want to sync any music, also in the same area. RE: Extreme iTunes Frustration Continued: Update
I guess I am not being clear. I have unchecked songs, artists, and albums that are being synced. This is in my device section, not in my iTunes library. I cannot access all album titles in that section, no matter how I manipulate the arrows. I do not have sync entire library checked. Music is turned off in iTunes and app store. Yet still, songs I do not want, and that are unchecked, (not all of them) are still being synced, despite the fact that I have all artists, genres, and albums unchecked now. Re: An issue with my new PC and my IPhone.
I would suggest that you only use an original Apple Lightning cord. I had some inexpensive ones that used to work fine in the past but with the last several upgrades they no longer allow iTunes to recognize the phone. When I plug the phone into the computer with the imitation Lightning cord it does not recognize it no matter which port I use. Then when I switched to the original Apple cord iTunes recognized the iPhone. Just a thought. I assume there must be a problem with the app or has Facebook moved where your new requests are? Thanks, -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: getting the iphone 5s out of an otterbox
Hi Larry, In the middle of each long side is a clip. It feels like a rectangle with a hole in the middle. To undo one, place the phone screen up, put a fingernail under the clip, and pull away from the phone and slightly up. There are also clips at the corners. On the bottom surface, you'll feel an arrow pointing to each of these, except the one next to the hole where the camera lens is. There's also an arrow on the bottom pointing to each of the side clips I described in the last paragraph. Unlike the side clips, the corner ones are under the edge of the top piece of the case. Again, put a fingernail below this clip and push out and slightly up. I find it easiest to loosen the clip at one of the corners, then move down the nearest long side and loosen the side clip on that side, then the other corner on that side, then one of the corner clips and the side clip on the other long side. The final corner clip comes loose easily once the other ones have been released. This gets easier as you do it; the clips loosen up a bit. i hope that made sense. If not, let me know, and i'll try again. best, Anna On May 31, 2014, at 3:59 PM, Larry Lumpkin llump...@austin.rr.com wrote: Hi. Questions regarding Aps and IPhone 5S
Hi All, As I stated in an earlier message last week, I intend to purchase an IPhone 5S in the near future. I have Verizon as my carrier plan to have 2 GB data. I've heard on this list that lots of aps use the internet. Would it be better to purchase more GB, or just don't use the ones that require the internet connection? I only want to text once in a while, and be able to identify objects and colors with the iPhone. Also, I would like to use the ap that can read a printed page after taking a picture of it with the camera. Would someone please explain all this stuff to me? Thanks! Re: Questions regarding Aps and IPhone 5S
First, if you can stand the wait, the iPhone6 will be out later this year. You could get that, or get the 5S when it drops in price. As to internet, if you are the only one on the phone plan, 2gb is more than enough. Yes, apps use data, but most let you disable internet access while not on wifi. Besides, the majority will only be pulling small amounts of text, so letting them do what they want won't eat into your data plan. The big data users are audio and video apps - Podcasts, Music, Youtube, Skype, FaceTime, and the like. OCR apps are not great, but they get the job done in most cases. Re: Exploring my iPhone?
The two typing modes both have their advantages. Standard typing works a little better when your trying to type in a car or bus that's bouncing around. Connie, If you really want to just explore the screen and things like the numeric keypad and onscreen keyboard it may be easier to set your typing mode to standard. Of course you may already have it set to that as it is the standard. The other option here is touch typing. If you set it to touch typing then you can touch the screen all you want to find things, but if you have the keypad on the screen or the virtual keyboard then whatever you touch is being typed as soon as you lift your finger off the screen. Most people find this to be more efficient and faster. In standard typing nothing happens if you lift the finger off the screen. If, for example, you bring up the telephone keypad and touch the 5 (it should have a dot if you have the tactile screen protector) then you would have to double tap on the screen before it is being entered/typed. You can also find the number you want, leave your finger on it and tap the screen with a second finger to type it. This is what is called a split tap. Oh darn. I'm very disappointed. That is ok, because the original series with carl Sagan is on either Hulu or Netflix. (I don't recall which at the moment). I did like the musical score a lot. I noted in the AppleVis podcast that the URL used by Anonymouse, the podcast presenter, also ended with the 2121. Also, my iPhone did not say the colon which preceded the last four digits of 2121. You might try inputting a colon before those last four digits when you're typing them into your browser's address bar. Good luck. Voice over and languages
Hi all, Have been using iPhone for a couple of weeks now. I notice that sometimes when reading certain text, voice over will switch to other languages although the text is in english. I am using British english and it is set as the default dialect in the VO settings. I have also deleted other languages in the roter, but this does not solve the problem. Can anyone guide me to set the voices so it won’t jump when reading? Thanks. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Questions regarding Aps and IPhone 5S
Eve, 2GB should be fine for those needs. The only thing that will involve a bit of data is sending pics of items to Tap-Tap-See to be recognized. General internet browsing, emails, sending texts, don't use much data unless you watch a lot of video or plan to listen to a great deal of music streaming. In any event, you can have VZW set up to send you an alert when you consume half or three-quarters of your data allotment for that billing cycle. Secondly, you can turn off certain apps which consume data from the cellular data in your iPhone settings. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Your photos are easy to find and are organized consistently across your enabled devices. The Photos app can automatically straighten horizons and with smart editing tools, you can quickly adjust light and color or access individual tools for deeper fine-tuning. With iCloud Photo Library, every adjustment and effect is automatically updated across your devices. Conversations in Messages become more immersive with the ability to communicate with just a swipe. Tap to Talk allows you to share your voice and the same simple gesture also works for sharing videos and photos within Messages. Group messaging now gives you the ability to add and remove contacts, leave a conversation and the option to not be disturbed. Users can easily browse through all of the photos and videos within a conversation and share multiple photos and videos at once. You can choose to share your current location from within Messages for an hour, a day or longer. The new Health app gathers the information you choose from your various health apps and fitness devices, and provides you with a clear and current overview in one place. iOS 8 offers developers the ability for health and fitness apps to communicate with each other. With your permission, each app can use specific information from other apps to provide a more comprehensive way to manage your health and fitness. For example, the Nike+ apps using NikeFuel will be able to pull in other key HealthKit metrics such as sleep and nutrition to build a custom user profile and improve athletic performance. New predictive typing for Apple’s QuickType keyboard is smarter and more personalized, and intelligently takes context into account, such as who the recipient is and in which app you’re typing. QuickType understands the way you communicate, suggesting favorite phrases, so you can write entire sentences with just a few taps. What the keyboard learns is encrypted on your device and never sent to the cloud. iOS 8 introduces Family Sharing, making it easier than ever to communicate and share purchases, photos and calendars within the same household. Family members can browse and download each other’s iTunes®, iBooks® or App Store purchases. Up to six members can participate, each with their own Apple ID. Parents can create Apple IDs for children, which includes Ask to Buy, requiring parental permission for purchases. Family Sharing automatically keeps everyone connected by creating a shared family photo stream, shared calendar and provides an option for locating family members and their devices.

The iOS 8 SDK delivers more than 4,000 new APIs including amazing new frameworks, greater extensibility and a revolutionary new programming language.” iOS 8 offers developers robust frameworks including HealthKit APIs that provide the ability for health and fitness apps to communicate with each other. With your permission, each app can use specific information from other apps to provide a more comprehensive way to manage your health and fitness. For example, your blood pressure app could share its data with a physician app, such as the Mayo Clinic app, so your doctor can provide high-quality guidance and care. “We believe Apple’s HealthKit will revolutionize how the health industry interacts with people,” said John Noseworthy, M.D., Mayo Clinic president and CEO. “We are proud to be at the forefront of this innovative technology with the Mayo Clinic app.” As HealthKit combines health data to help you take better care of your health, HomeKit lets your home accessories connect seamlessly to better manage your home. HomeKit delivers a common protocol, secure pairing and the ability to easily control individual or groups of devices throughout the house including integration with Siri®. For example, you can tell Siri you are “going to bed” and it could dim the lights, lock your doors, close the garage door and set the thermostat. “We are excited to be part of the next step in making home automation a reality, in a safe and integrated way,” said Eric Rondolat, CEO, Philips Lighting. “HomeKit will allow us to further enhance the Philips Hue lighting experience by making it simpler to securely pair devices throughout the house and control them using Siri.” Developers can further customize the user experience with iOS extensions, including new sharing options, custom photo filters, custom actions and document APIs. Developers can now add their own widgets into Notification Center, and third-party keyboards offer additional layouts and input methods. Gaming on iOS takes a huge leap forward in iOS 8 with Metal, a new graphics technology that maximizes performance on the A7 chip. With its dramatic 10 times improvement in draw call speed, Metal enables leading game providers for the first time to bring console-class 3D games to mobile devices. For casual games, iOS 8 now features SceneKit, making it easy to create fun 3D games, along with major enhancements to SpriteKit, including field forces, per-pixel physics and inverse kinematics. Swift is a powerful new programming language for iOS and OS X® that makes it easier than ever for developers to create incredible apps. Designed for Cocoa® and Cocoa Touch®, Swift combines the performance and efficiency of compiled languages with the simplicity and interactivity of popular scripting languages. I need help with iTunes match. I would like to get all of my pop and rock music in one library and let iTunes match look at that library but I don't know if I'm able to do that or not. Because I already have a library in which iTunes match is looking at but I don't want half of the tracks in there so I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm getting frustrated. Can I create a different library and just put some of the Tracks in there, that I want and leave others out? What should I do? Thank you. iTunes match.
Hello there. I am wondering how I can get rid of a lot of music I don't one in my music section, that iTunes match has put in there. There is just a ton of it that I don't want. Do I need to create a smart playlist for this? A lot of my pop, and rock songs are not showing up because almost all of my country folder is in there. And I don't want that I just want my pop and my rock music to be in my music section of my phone. But instead, iTunes match has found my country folder, and no matter what I do, it is putting a lot of stuff in my iCloud library that is from my country music folder that I don't want. A lot of it is music I hardly listen to. So how can I fix this? Thank you. Jerry Mader Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Hi All, Is it possible to have different groups from within contacts? For example: if you want to have a group of contacts just for business, restaurants, family, friends, ETC. Re: Groups in Contacts
Hi, To my knowledge, you cannot add groups in the iphone but, if the address book is synked with the computer you can create them there and they will show up on the iphone. Adding people to specific groups is tricky but possible. Much easier on the computer. Let me know if you would like more details about adding people existing groups on iOS. Re: Questions regarding Aps and IPhone 5S
I agree, it doesn't sound like you'd need more than 2G of data. The other question is how often you'll be able to use wifi. If you'll consistently have access to wifi, such as you have it at home, then you can safely update IOS and your apps over the air without having to worry about your cellular data. Even if you don't have wifi, but you'll be hooking your phone up to your PC or Mac occasionally, then you can update the phone and apps that way, and again wouldn't have to worry about those using up your 2G. On 6/2/2014 2:26 PM, Steve wrote: Eve, 2GB should be fine for those needs. Accessibility Features in iOS8
Hi all, I just wanted to let everyone know the major new iOS8 accessibility features we know so far. This is from the Keynote - I don't even have the beta, so I can't break an NDA. * Better Zoom * Touch ID and a countdown timer as ways to exit Assistive Touch * multi-device support for compatible hearing aids * the Alex voice from OS X (possibly for Siri, or VO, we don't know for sure) * six-key braille input on-screen (no clue what this will look like) * third-party keyboard support for the whole system, and Fleksy as said on Twitter that it will be among the first to take advantage of this. Yes, Fleksy will soon be available at any point in iOS when a keyboard appears, from Mail to the App store to, well, anywhere! That's all I can think of for now, but between those and the standard iOS8 features, this is shaping up to be a very, very exciting release! -- Have a great day, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. assembling the scan stand pro
Hi, We bought a scan stand pro and it arrived today. Does anyone know how to assemble the thing? My wife and I are both totally, sopictures don't do much good. Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated. HI Alex, thanks for these. How do we know this? I saw the keynote, (twice in fact) and no mention of these points, such as Alex on iOS, was made. So where are these features coming from? Re: 5s cases
The Otterbox Defender case offers the same protection as it does on the 4S, except for the home button. That is left uncovered, so that you can use Touch ID. The rest of the case is solid though, and feels more solid - the outer case is harder and sturdier to my touch, compared to the softer and flimsier silicone of the 4S case. Re: Accessibility Features in iOS8
Yes, that's where I found it as well. There was a slide with thirty-two items the presenters could not cover during the Keynote, and these were among them. There were others as well, most very interesting. As to the keyboard, even if it can predict what I'm going to type most of the time, the question remains: how easy will it be to use? Anyone who uses spellcheck with the native keyboard knows what a pain that is. If accessing predictions is that slow, they won't be much help. Of course, Apple might have come up with a great way for VO users to do this, but until I see it, and that it works well, I'll be more excited for Fleksy or the in-built braille support. Re: assembling the scan stand pro
Hello Don, Lay the folded StandScan on a table with the small flap away from you. Open the small flap and fold back the body of the StandScan towards you. Now the topmost piece should open to the left, and the remaining part will open to the right but will still be a double thickness. Open the final piece to the right. Go to the lefthand piece and you'll find that there is a crease running from where it joins the second piece to the lefthand edge, a few centimetres in. Fold along this crease making an elongated triangle. The same thing can be found on the back edge of the same piece, and on the front and back edges of the third section. The piece at the extreme right is the top and you can find the LEDs along its back edge, and the cable at its back left corner. Lift the righthand section and lift the lefthand section, then fold over the flap at the end of the section with the LEDs so that the magnets meet the magnets on the lefthand section. A flap of the top section folds down to engage with the magnets on the triangular pieces, and the piece still lying flat at the back lifts up to meet the top and the triangular side pieces at the back. Your StandScan should now look like a large box with an open front and a short cable coming out of the upper back lefthand corner. I hope this helps. Hi cCara, I just listened to the Today in iOS Podcast and Rob mentioned Alex coming to iOS also and he also mentioned a bunch of other stuff. Re: assembling the scan stand pro
Sent from my iPhoneHello, I'm going to attempt how to set up the StandScan Pro. 1. Lay the StandScan pro with the flap facing up toward the ceiling. 2. Open the flap away from the body of the StandScan Pro. 3. Unfold the main portion of the StandScan Pro towards your body. 4. Unfold the top flap from right to left. 5.The next flap will unfold from left to right 2 times. The very outer right flap becomes the top. 6. On flaps 1and 3, there are fold lines that arein a long triangle. These need to be folded upwards. They give the basis of the edge of the box and have magnics on them. 7.Bring flaps 1 and 3 perpendicular to flap 2. Flap 2 is the bottom of the box. 8. Take flap 4 or the very outer right flap (the top) and place it going across the top and secure it the the magnics on the outer edge. 9. Take the front long edge of the top flap and let the magnics meet each other in the front. Do the same for the long top flap on the top back edge. 11. Bring the back flap up to secure the StandScan in place. The only other tip is to make sure that the jack is on the outside before putting the back flap in place. I HTH. Also, make sure to use the stickers to give you a guide in aligning the phone's camera up with the aperture on the top.
