Kelly did say one must do this which is not strictly true, but one proponent of this for example is Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast. Whenever he does mention this he usually says that most of the time upgrading goes OK without doing this, but that the likelihood that something might go wrong is much greater if you don't do this. I would agree with this, I have seen way too many upgrades from friends or acquaintances result in problems of various severity and whenever this happens and I asked if they at least force quit all apps and maybe did a restart of the device they said no, they just went ahead and started the update process. In my opinion it is reasonable that fewer problems occur if you do this. iOS may be better than other platforms in this respect, but it's not perfect and apps can use resources or access processes which may interfere with an update and I don't see why I should take this risk if 2 easy steps may avoid it. Re: just one question
Hummmnmnmnm, same price? not where we are; the basic Mini is about 1/2 or 2/3 the price of the basic iPhone. When I said I changed it for a phone, it was a 2nd-hand one. But yes, get a non-contract/PAYG simm, you can take and do with it anywhere; the iPad is tied to your wifi for all intents and purposes. That was Ok, it was for indoor use, took the original phone outdoors. Now I have 2 phones to take outdoors when one is tied to a charger cable. So, if you take this into account when doing the calculations... an iPad and iPhone are roughly the same price, keep in mind that I'm referring to the Wi-Fi version of the iPad, not the 3G version. The costs are roughly the same, give or take a hundred bucks or so, but when getting the iPhone, your carrier will charge you anywhere from 30 to 50 dollars per month, so your paying 30 to 50 dollars per month in addition to the iPhone's already inflated price. Even if you get it on a contract, most carriers will insist you get the iPhone on a 2 year contract, so you can expect to pay anywhere from 199 to 350 for the phone, plus another 30 to 50 dollars per month for twenty-four months, and you're looking at paying an extra 700 to 1200 dollars on top of what you paid for the phone. In addition to this, some carriers will charge you to unlock your phone at the end of your contract, and this could cost you another 30 to 75 dollars, at which point, you can now do what your iPad has done all along. In any case, if you're budget conscious, then the iPad would be the way to go, at which point, if you want to use the iPad as a navigation device, you'll have to spend a little more for the external GPS receiver, but even then, it still comes out cheaper than the iPhone. Keep in mind that the above are based on what I know about the major carriers in Canada and the US, but I doubt the pricing is much different in other areas. First I felt the article was written with the title in mind first, much like a bad high school paper trying to debate a topic, and grasping for cons to support the premise by only reporting half truths. For example, T-moble data plans start at $5 per month and the free data plan might even be an option. Second, the cons mentioned are mostly not specific to the iPhone, but smart phones in general, or people in general. Yes, GPS drains the battery. It drains any phone battery. But, the article did have me asking the question, what are the cons of the iPhone? What are the real issues and problems we still have using the device? I could come up with only one such issue that I have, and that's with automated phone services. The time it takes to hear voiceover while a menu prompt is going on, often requires me to take several attempts before getting to where I want to go. And the time that a system gives up on you if you delay too long is too short for my liking. I dread entering my webex conference code when dialing into meetings. Thank goodness more and more systems will accept voice recognition as well. Alas, I have no easy solution to this problem of getting competing feedback in my ear, one from the automated system and one from voiceover, but I do admit it is easier with a known tactile button layout. Now, I'm not looking for work arounds here, I'm simply pointing out a valid complaint that I feel could be labeled as a con. But that's the best I could do. How about you? GNSS Bluetooth receivers with my iPhone?
Hello there, Is anyone interested in GPS/LBS accuracy? Here in Europe we have a new system which has just come online called Galileo. The receivers that one uses with Galileo are called G and SS receivers. I believe there are various models of these already on the market. Has anyone tried one yet? Does anyone know much about all of this? Apparently, accuracy is vastly greater than with the traditional GPS solutions. So, I am very interested to find out more. Re: Dice World Question
You are correct, there is not a way to sort the games yet. I believe the developer has mentioned this could be something he adds in an upcoming update. Nick is great and deserves high marks for going to extreme lengths to make Dice World so accessible. He, as a sighted developer, took it upon himself to learn how to use VoiceOver, so he could see what he could do to improve the game for blind people. That is something you rarely find in an app developer. He just finished getting the app ready to be released for Android users, and has said that he plans to focus once again on doing more for the iPhone app, so stay tuned, there's no telling what he has in store for us in new releases. -Original Message- From: Mary Anne Lynskey Sent: Monday, June 09, 2014 11:53 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Dice World Question Hi again. I do have another question. I believe as it stands now, there is no way to do this. How can I get my oldest games to come up first? I have many games, so addicted that I'm ashamed to admit how many, and I sometimes only have a few minutes. Would you ask the developer to make it possible to have the games sort by oldest at top of list? By the way, I paid for the game and find it a good policy to do so when a developer does such great things to make it accessible. If I can, I will pay for good software. I know many can't, and I'm not criticizing any one or bragging because I know that eeryone does what they can, especially in these days when cash is very sparse at times! But I would urge that anyone who can do so try to contribute to those who really sttrive to make software accessible. Iphone 5s Battery Life
Hi friends, I know that it is very difficult to comment on this as it depends on how much use etc but I can normally get around two to three days battery life on my IPhone 5s on one charge with low use, probably a couple of five minute calls and around ten text messages, does this sound reasonable? I do actually turn it off at night, mainly because I don't want to be bothered with messages etc. Many thanks in anticipation, This message may contain confidential information. Re: What are the real cons of the iPhone WAS:Re: NFB June Braille Monitor/Article on the iPhone
Hi, Glad you agree, but I specifically did say I wasn't looking for workarounds. Just valid cons that the article might have used instead of the weak ones they did. It took two days, but the second con I will add is the lack of water resistance. I'm paranoid about taking my phone near water, and some of the videos I've seen where people drop their phone into water and it still works amaze me. That's the type of tech I expect from Apple and my iPhone. Ok, two cons down, eight more to go. Best, --k Faith doesn't give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the questions. Yes, if you have motor issues,, it may be difficult, blind or sighted. Yes, learning a new piece of technology can be frustrating, blind or sighted. In general, I am less than impressed with the technical savvy of the major blindness organizations. It feels there is an old guard that needs to retire. Can we come up with ten valid and sane cons? I certainly can come up with ten pros, and then some. RE: iTunes Syncing Advice Sought
Hi Billy, If you have a Podcast client such as Downcast you should be able to just search for Today in iOS. You can also go to http://www.TodayIn IOS.com and listen to any of the episodes online. Lastly, if you want to spend $2.99 in support of the Podcast you can buy the Today in iOS app and listen to it that way. I f you have the app you get a push notification any time a new episode goes live and Rob also sends out push notifications if there are any breaking Apple news. RE: GNSS Bluetooth receivers with my iPhone?
Hi Sandra, Galileo is far from complete at this point. According to an article I read on Tech Radar the 30 satellites which comprise Galileo (27 + 3 spares) won't be in place until 2019. This of course doesn't mean that the system is not functioning to some degree before this. As for receivers I would probably not rush out and buy one since I am quite sure the iPhone in one of its future iterations will support Galileo just as it now supports not only GPS but also the GLONASS system. The latter is a russion system of satellites which offers world wide coverage just as GPS does and unlike Galileo which will only cover Europe. For those who are interested, here is the link o the Tech Radar article: http://www.techradar.com/news/car-tech/satnav/galileo-how-europe-s-answer-to -gps-will-revolutionise-your-phone-1198327 Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sandratomkins Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2014 4:38 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: GNSS Bluetooth receivers with my iPhone? The receivers that one uses with Galileo are called G and SS receivers. I believe there are various models of these already on the market. Has anyone tried one yet? Does anyone know much about all of this? Apparently, accuracy is vastly greater than with the traditional GPS solutions. So, I am very interested to find out more. Another note to add to this. If you have an iPad with Cellular access, T-Mobile will give you 200 MB of free data every month for life no strings attached. All you have to do is ask. And yes I know, 200 MB isn't all that much, but It's something and it's free. RE: just one question
Google Maps does preload your route into your device so you can actually navigate while offline. The drawback to this is if you go offcourse you will not have turn by turn nbavigation until you get back on course or unless you go online and update the route. I've used Google maps for quite some time very successfully both online and offline, and on trips as short as two miles and as long as 600 miles. It worked wonderfully in both cases. One of the 600 mile trips was even tested while offline. I was very impressed that there did not appear to be a change in the apps performance regardless of whether I was online or not. I've been using the iPhone five for almost a year and a half to two years. I find the OtterBox defender carrying case which clips to a holster or belt clip holster that I could wear around my waist. It is the strongest case that I have had in a while, and there is a lifetime warranty on the cases. I think you might be able to acquire one from a store or you could probably send to OtterBox manufacturers themselves, and they might be able to have one or send you one for your device. A friend of mine has an OtterBox defender case for his iPad mini. That is why I was mentioning it they might have one for the device that you have. Hope this helps. All the best! Michael G. For example, when I'm in the kitchen busy cooking, cleaning, washing, whatever, I like placing my iDevice away from me so I don't accidentally destroy it. Placing it away from me also makes it easier to listen to audio as the speaker isn't muffled the times it is in my pocket. The problem is that at times I forget where I have placed it. Like I've said, I can simply place the iDevice on a counter, but I've forgotten it was on the counter and luckily nothing serious has happened so far when knocking it off of the counter. I do have to admit that I once carried lots of stuff from one room to another so placed my iPod touch in my back pocket thinking I could not possibly forget it, but as soon as someone engaged me in conversation, I forgot I had the thing in my pocket and I went to sit down. luckily I quickly remembered the device was in my back pocket and quickly got up to check for a cracked screen and alike. Smile. I guess I'm asking if anyone here has purchased or knows of a type of case one can stick to the side of a refrigerator or cabinet which can hold and iPhone or iPod touch. I'd also like to stick one of these to my bed frame and alike for equally quick access to my iDevice. I've tried running a search on Amazon.com, but all I've found was those cases used to place GPS devices on car windshields. Would appreciate any ideas the list can provide. Hi all, There's really no need to fully shut off one's device if you can get into the habit of simply disabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which can be done quickly using Siri on an iPhone. If I fully charge my iPod Touch 5th gen, and if I disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, I often turn on my iPod some 24 hours later, and the status at upper right-hand corner of home screen will still state battery life at 100% if there hasn't been heavy use. RE: new gps for the US?
Hi Larry, There really is not much need for a new North American system, the GPS network does cover the entire world and accuracy is not necessarily a factor of the technology but also a result of the government keeping it to a certain level of accuracy by adding a deliverate factor of inaccuracy. Also, keep in mind that any iPhone since the 4S can not only take advantage of GPS but also of the GLONASS satellite system which was put up by Russia and which also covers the globe. RE: Iphone 5s Battery Life
Joseph, The iPod Touch has much better battery life than an iPhone. One of the biggest drains on battery apart from continued GPS usage is simply the fact that an iPhone constantly keeps in touch with cell towers. Unless you put your iPhone in Airplane mode which basically means everything is turned off you will never see an iPhone staying at 100% over night even if WiFi and Bluetooth are turned off, if all apps are cleared from the app switcher and if the device is locked all night. All new Skype update with major changes to the user interface
Hello List, Just thought I post a quick message about this. Skype was updated for me this morning. First of all, Voiceover accessibility is, as far as I can tell, fully there. However, the interface is completely different and will need a bit of getting used to. Having said this, I really like what I have seen so far. For one thing, the app loads super fast and this is something that is mentioned in the What's new. The first time I opened it after the update a video started playing. I let it play and after maybe 15 or 20 seconds it stopped and I had a Skip Video button. Once I was in the app I noticed that now there are 2 buttons, one on the top left called the Skype Home button and another at the top right called My Info, Online button. If I double tap this I have a Back button at the top left and then a nice summary of everything related to my status and account: First my name Then a Change Profile Picture button Next a place where I can enter a mood message. Then the status button where I can change it from Online to Away, Offline and so on. Next is my Skype credit and if I double tap it I can quickly add $4.99 via an in-app purchase. Lastly is a My Account button, a Settings button and a More button. In Settings I can turn on or off push notifications, in-app notifications and in-app sounds. Under More I have buttons for Help, About, Send Feedback and Sign Out. Underneath the top where I find these 2 buttons I have now 3 items in one row: Recents, Favorites and People The order of these 3 items changes, Voiceover doesn't say they are buttons or links, but you can double tap on them and whichever one you double tap on moves to the very left. Favorites is new and for me it's empty since I haven't added any Favorites yet. People gives me all my contacts. If you double tap it you have a search field to look for somebody and there is also a table index on the right. Between the search field and the top of your list starting with A is a button which Voiceover announces as All. This means all your contacts are displayed and if you double tap on this button you can choose between All and Online. Here I have to do some more exploring because in the old Skype you could tap on lists and select from All contacts, Skype Contacts, Online Contacts, Saved Phone Numbers and also bring up your iPhone Contacts. I currently don't see this any more and while All contains all you have in Skype including regular Skype contacts whether they are online or offline as well as saved phone numbers, one apparently can't filter by this any more. At the bottom of the screen are a few buttons and they may change depending on where you are. If you are in your People view you have buttons for DialPad, Message and More. One thing which is fantastic is that the DialPad now works in touch typing mode even when you are on a call and bring up the DialPad to enter numbers during your call. In the past only the main DialPad where you would dial your phone number would work in touch typing mode and you still had to double or split tap the DialPad for entering numbers during a call. I think this makes Skype the only Voip app where touch typing on the DialPad is fully supported. OK, that's about it for now. The main thing is that Voiceover accessibility is still as good as ever and it's safe to update. Regards, Sieghard -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: new gps for the US?
I heard differing stories on the accuracy situation. I thought George W Bush ordered the thing turned off that makes it less accurate, but maybe the receivers are only so good as well. I wonder how the iPhone even combines Glonas and GPS, as it would seem that using both could give better accuracy, but there is only so much an internal antenna inside a phone could do. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2014 2:06 PM Subject: RE: new gps for the US? Hi Larry, There really is not much need for a new North American system, the GPS network does cover the entire world and accuracy is not necessarily a factor of the technology but also a result of the government keeping it to a certain level of accuracy by adding a deliverate factor of inaccuracy. Also, keep in mind that any iPhone since the 4S can not only take advantage of GPS but also of the GLONASS satellite system which was put up by Russia and which also covers the globe. Re: All new Skype update with major changes to the user interface
How can one find this? It's not coming up in an app store search. On Jun 10, 2014, at 3:57 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello List, Just thought I post a quick message about this. Unless you put your iPhone in Airplane mode which basically means everything is turned off you will never see an iPhone staying at 100% over night even if WiFi and Bluetooth are turned off, if all apps are cleared from the app switcher and if the device is locked all night. If I fully charge my iPod Touch 5th gen, and if I disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, I often turn on my iPod some 24 hours later, and the status at upper right-hand corner of home screen will still state battery life at 100% if there hasn't been heavy use. Using a blue tooth keyboard
Hello. I'm using a blue tooth keyboard for the first time and have two questions. 1. Is there a way I can tell Voiceover to echo words but not characters? 2. When I encounter a spelling error and press the backspace key, how do I access the list of suggestions using the keyboard? You can change how Voiceover echoes characters or words. Go to settings, general, accessibility, Voiceover, typing feedback. You want to change the hardware keyboard. RE: just one question
Todd, I didn't say acceptable, I said accessible. Also, I'm referring to the Google Maps app, not the web-based version of Google Maps. When you wrote that it wasn't accessible you did not include that you meant that it wasn't accessible using Braille. I haven't forgotten anyone here, I'm only stating what I know to be true, and that is that many blind people use the Google Maps app on a regular basis and are having no accessibility issues. And as for sighted users, I do know some which use this app regularly and they have no problems with it. It loads quickly on our devices and updates quickly as it should. If fact, I've done several comparisons while riding in a vehicle between Google Maps and other GPS apps as well as stand-alone GPS products and found that quite often Google Maps actually gave me information before some of the others. BTW, there is no need to get defensive here as I'm not attacking you, and I apologize if I somehow made you feel that way. This is only a discussion, after all. The drawback to this is if you go offcourse you will not have turn by turn nbavigation until you get back on course or unless you go online and update the route. For Jeff, and for those who would like to know how to configure the Twitter app to alert of certain users, when they tweet? 1.-When on a tweet be from the main TimeLine feed, or if you've done the double-tap to get into the tweet,, flicking left/right through the tweet, Voiceover (I'm using my IPhone in Spanish so I'll try my best to explain) Voiceover says Photo de Perfil (I guess in English it's profile picture); 2.-Where it says Profile Picture, You double tap, and you come up with several items including how many tweets the person has on his timeline, how many follow etc.; flick until you see an Options button. 3.-OK there flick right until you hear Activate Notifications; double-tap on there so the notifications of the user, when he or it tweets, you receive it on the phone. 4.-Keep on going Back either with the up/down/up rubbing, or by double-tapping the Back button. Do the same for all the users you want; I do this especially for news. OK now to activate the notifications on the phone itself, from the Twitter app, 1.-Go toAccount tab on the bottom four tabs; 2.-Flick right until you hear (in Spanish it's Configuración) maybe in English it's setup or configuration? and double tap again because an alert comes up asking if you want to edit your Profile, or Setup or configuration since you want to set up. 3.-Use the four-finger tap towards the top of the screen since when I get in, I land kind of in the middle where it says previsualize, sound effects etc. 4.-Flick right until you reach your Twittername, and Double-tap. 5.-Once there, Flick right until you hear Notifications and double-tap. 6.-You flick right and you hear tweets, mentions, etc. Double-tap if you want in this case, to turn on tweets; if you want to turn on mentions, dm etc., if they're off, double tap to turn them on. 7.-On Tweets which is what we're concentrating on, it'll tell you if it's on, or when you've turned it on, how many twitter users you'll receive notifications from. 8.-Go back either via the up/down/up two-finger rub, or by the Back button, OK Button, and you're off! -- Enviado desde mi lap Gerardo J Corripio Flores Psicólogo, Terapéuta Reiki Saludos desde Tampico, Tamaulipas México RompiendoBarreras espacio de psicología/Superación Personal Sábados 10PM México http://radiogeneral.com ¡los esperamos! -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Jonathan Mosen Mosen Consulting Blindness technology eBooks, tutorials and training http://Mosen.org On 11/06/2014, at 7:57 am, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello List, Just thought I post a quick message about this. Kindle app now plays audiobooks
So far, my very early first impressions of this new feature are quite positive. It's pretty cool. I get the benefit of the audiobook from audible but I can have access to the text too. :) I understand that it may seem redundant for some people but I think it's pretty cool. Of course, you have to buy the kindle book and the audible book. I tried it with the free book Black Beauty just to see how it worked. I have not played with it much, so this is just my first impression and whether I personally use it a ton or not...well, I just think it's totally cool. :) I can see how this can be very helpful for a sighted struggling reader as well. :) Oh, just for clarification. Within the kindle app, if you have the kindle book and you own the audible book, you can now play that audible book within the Kindle app and the kindle book will stay on the correct page. You must have your kindle account and audible account linked to use the whisper sync and you must own both the kindle and audible book that will sync. I believe somewhere in the book descriptions it will tell you if the kindle and the audible book will do whisper sync. Purchasing air printer to use with iPhone and mac air
Hello everyone. Feel free to write me off list as some of this information relates to the mac air. In April I bought a mac air, which I love, and need to purchase a new printer--one that I would like to use with the iPhone and mac air. The driver for the printer that I have, hp lazar 1020, is not supported in mavericks and I was trying to use it from the US B port and it is not an air printer. Apple has confirmed that the driver is not supported as well. Here are my questions: Can anyone recommend a printer to get which can be set up by a totally blind person and will the mac just recognize the drivers? I have seen so many printers with touch screen menus and would like to avoid this or will the mac configure it without me having to use these menus? Many printers also work as scanners and is it worth getting a printer only or one that serves as a scanner? I will need to purchase scanningsoftware for the mac in time. i also want to get a printer that will work with the iPhone and mac air and one which, hopefully, will still be supported when future operating systems are released for the mac and iPhone. RE: Purchasing air printer to use with iPhone and mac air
Hello Vicki, This is Mark. I have never used an Air Printer so cannot advise you in that regard. However, I can tell you that there are many printers that are accessible via iOS and OSX that will allow a totally blind person to have access to the printers ink levels, device status, number of pages printed, etc. Personally, I recommend that you purchase a printer, not a printer/scanner combo. 1. Make sure you have a network router setup and running. I personally like Linksys but many of my friends use Apple's Airport Extreme. 2. Purchase a Ethernet/Network Laser printer such as the Samsung ML-331. The cost of the average network laser printer, monochrome is about 80 USD. If you want a color laser printer, you can pay in the range of 160 USD and up. I purchased my Samsung ML-331 (monochrome) laser printer last year for 45 USD, bran new from Frye's Electronics. 3. The reason I suggest a network laser printer is because the printer will be assigned its own IP address on your home network. This means that, once the printer is successfully connected, you only need to browse to its IP address in Safari, or any browser for that matter, and you will have access to the printer's settings, statistics, and controls. 4. Connect the network printer to your router via an Ethernet cable. 5. The Mac will see the printer and download the correct drivers. For your iOS device, you will simply install an app that can see the printer on your network thus allowing you to print to it. Vicki, please keep in mind that the list above are the broad strokes needed to get you up and running. There are a lot of good Ethernet/network laser printers out there that will work on your Mac and iOS device so do some shopping around. I strongly suggest that you go out and actually touch the printers before making a purchase as size and shape can make a difference. For example, in my case, I like to address my own envelopes so I made sure that the printer I purchased had an envelope slot that I can use without sighted assistance. RE: All new Skype update with major changes to the user interface
Thanks for that tip. I have Groundwire and while it's a very good and accessible app, the developers told me they would look into allowing for touch typing with Voiceover for a long time, but nothing is changing. In fact, I find Groundwire usually doesn't even allow me to type numbers during a call unless I double tap and hold for a moment and this is much too slow for many situations. I assume Bria is fully Voiceover accessible? It's really too bad Skype doesn't have Canadian inbound numbers because it really is in my opinion the best, most widely supported and most cross-platform compatible service out there. RE: iTunes Syncing Advice Sought
Billy, I am sure Rob appreciates the support he gets from people paying for the Today in iOS app. However, I did buy it and while it is Voiceover accessible, I prefer to listen to the Podcast with Downcast and I don't even have the Today in iOS app installed on my iPhone at this time. Just thought I mention this because even if you like the Podcast it is not really necessary to pay the $2.99 for the app. If you don't have Downcast your $2.99 would give you more if you used them to purchase Downcast.
