Re: An Adaptor Question

2014-10-13 Thread Brett
Hi,

Its possible, I use a adaptor which lets me plug-in a guitar and headphones.
However, TalkingTuner doesn't use the external input, it always uses the
built-in mic. So an update to TalkingTuner would be required.

Cheers,
Brett.

Re: Feature Differences Between iPhone 6 & 6+

I think that iPad mode with split screen might be orientation specific as
not even my Mini does it without being in landscrape first. Some of us like
it once used to it, so I'd like the 6+ to do that if/when I get one.

Apart from that optical image stabilization which you already know about the
other 2 difference are screen size which I am sure you are aware of and the
6 Plus has much better battery life. That last fact might be very mportant
for a blind person especially if you use GPS a lot and don't like using

RE: Hail-a-Cab Austin and Hail-aCab Houston

2014-10-13 Thread Richard Petty
Kathy,

Your assessments are accurate.

A. In IOS 8.2, I have yet to find a street name for a destination. In
addition, fine tuning an address pick up location can also be difficult.
I've never found this segment of the app to be ideal. Most often, to have a
searched street appear I had to leave the screen by going to another (going
to the settings from the home screen, etc.) and then return. For some
reason, the screen would appear to refresh and display options, but only
sometimes. In addition, the app is buggy with respect to streets with
geographic designations such as north, south, east, west, etc. It's
inconsistent and unforgiving of anything but an exact match, and sometimes
not even that.
B. You are correct. Now, one can only request a trip needed right away.
Under IOS 8.02, after double-tapping "Now", I confirm there is only an alert
sound and the app freezes. There may be unreadable visual content; however
there's no way for me to verify this. Regardless, you are correct, the only
solution is to close the app in the app switcher and start over. The app
failed for me after repeated attempts. (By the way, in IOS 7 I could get the
future pickup time feature to work by double tapping and holding the "Done"
button on the time chooser screen, but that no longer is a solution because
the app now fails far before that point.)
C. In addition to your comments, the "Rate Your Trip" feature has never
allowed a numerical score, only a text entry. Other users can do both. The
default is five stars, so, without very explicit text descriptions, the user
has little chance of alerting the company to problems.

I have given the app poor ratings in the App Store. I have spoken and
corresponded with Mike Spears mikespe...@houstonyellowcab.com who promised a
new beta during the summer, but one has not been forthcoming.and now, with
IOS 8.02, there are new problems. Even though you're in Austin, Mike might
be a good contact.

This is not good for the Yellow Cab franchises. In Houston, Uber and Lyft
are legal. Their apps are more accessible. The Curb app is also. The
competition all have definite disadvantages and I'm inclined to prefer
Yellow Cab. With some fairly good effort on their part, they've made
improvements in accessibility, notably transport of dog guides with
passengers (although their commitment is not absolute; they may have
waivered on this recently). They also seem to be making some progress on the
subsidized MSP program in Houston, bringing service timeliness more in line
with that for cash passengers. But, at least for me, not attending to the
problems in this app may alter my ride choices. That may be true for others
too.

Hello, listers:

I am thinking some of you iPhone users who live in Austin and Houston
may be familiar with the Hail-a-Cab Austin and Houston iPhone apps. I
have been using Hail-a-Cab Austin for several years - I started when the
iPhone 4 was still hot stuff. When the app first came out, its
functionality was great. I could do everything I needed to do. As IOS
upgrades came along, things seemed to start breaking. Are any of you
having the following problems:
a. Searches by Street name or place name do not work Nothing is
returned, even for major landmarks. I can request a trip and give a
destination only if the place I'm going to is one I have used before If
I want to go to a new place, I have to request the trip and leave the
destination blank.
b. I can only a request a trip that I need right away. If I wanted to
request a future trip, for tomorrow morning, let's say, I am unable to
do so. When the app was new, the date and time pickers worked properly.
Under IOS 7, if the pickers worked at all, then nothing would happen
when I hit the "done" button. With the arrival of IOS 8.02, the app
responds strangely. If I double-tap "Now", I hear an alert sound, and
VoiceOver says there is no content to display on the screen. The only
thing I can do at that point is close the app through the app switcher.

I checked the product reviews for Hail-a-Cab Austin in the App StoreOnly
47 have been submitted - and I was one of those. 80% of reviewers rated
the app with only one star. I have called Yellow Cab about problems
with the app for at least a year, with no results. It's hard not to
conclude that no one cares about fixing the problems with the app.

Have any of you already submitted reviews through the App Store? Have
you called Yellow Cab to report any difficulties you are having? Do you
have other advocacy suggestions? Please do not suggest that I use Uber
or Lyft - they are illegal here.

VoiceOver restarting and camfind IOS8.0.2

2014-10-13 Thread Shai
Hello,
I am using VoiceOver on an iPhone5s with IOS 8.0.2. When I use the Cam
Find app by instructing Siri to open it and I take the initial
picture, I notice that VoiceOver restarts though the picture is still
being processed. Has anyone else noticed this?
Thanks in advance for any responses

First, I'm using a Windows PC so I'm only presuming that the e-mail clients
for Mac provide a method for creating a group.

You create the group in the CONTACTS or Address Book for your computer.
Then when you execute a sync via iTunes you instruct iTunes to sync
CONTACTS.

Two things in response:

First, are you aware that if you send an SMS message to a group of
friends/acquaintances everyone in that addressee list will have everybody
else's phone number? This may or may not be a problem, but I made the
mistake of sending a group message to four individuals not realizing that
all numbers would be visible to everyone.

Second, if you are using a PC or Mac with iTunes you can create a goup on
that platform and have it carried over to the iPhone to use as a group.

Hey folks

I'll explain what I mean. Sometimes I want to send one message to a bunch of
friends. F.E. I am following a soccer amateur team and I attend most of the
away matches of them. After the game is over, I want tosend the result to
let's say 30 persons on my contact list.
Instead of selecting them all one by one, I'd like to create one group,
select it and send one message to 35 people at once. Is there an app or
possibility to do so?
With my old Nokia Phone, I simplay created a group and selected the contacts
for the fans of that soccer team en finished. Fron that time on, I simply
send one sms to 35 perople without spending minutes of time to add contacts.
I know there is an app called Igroup so I tried it out but the app seems not
to be very workable.
I am able to create a group; however drag or drop or add contacts is not
possible with voiceover at all, you can use the table index but no cnontact
will be announced at all.
Any ideas how to accomplish this wish?
Best regards
Davy

Have you tried Qoo which is free and works quite well at least on my end.
The app is easy to use, all controls speak no problem with VoiceOver and
there are different sound themes as well as two voices to choose from.
That's q o o not c or k o o.

Re: Feature Differences Between iPhone 6 & 6+

2014-10-13 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
Does the 6 Plus behave more like an iPad? If I'm using a 6 Plus and go into
Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver, would I have the
Accessibility Settings appear in a window on the left side and the VoiceOver
settings on the right half of the display? Just curious. That's the thing
that makes me crazy about using any flavor of iPad. I currently use an
iPhone 5S and any time I go into a settings dialog, I don't have to deal
with any kind of split screen. The same is true for the mail app, where I
open a message and it takes up the entire screen. On an iPad, when I open a
message, I have the message list on the left and the actual message on the
right

Apart from that optical image stabilization which you already know about the
other 2 difference are screen size which I am sure you are aware of and the
6 Plus has much better battery life. That last fact might be very mportant
for a blind person especially if you use GPS a lot and don't like using
external batteries. Apart from that the 2 phones are the same and in my
opinion the largest deciding factor why one person might pick a 6 and
another a 6 Plus is the size which is exactly why Apple has made the 2
phones.

RE: Feature Differences Between iPhone 6 & 6+

2014-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apart from that optical image stabilization which you already know about the
other 2 difference are screen size which I am sure you are aware of and the
6 Plus has much better battery life. That last fact might be very mportant
for a blind person especially if you use GPS a lot and don't like using
external batteries. Apart from that the 2 phones are the same and in my
opinion the largest deciding factor why one person might pick a 6 and
another a 6 Plus is the size which is exactly why Apple has made the 2
phones.

Can anybody tell me if there's any place I can go to read about the feature
differences between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+? In particular, feature
differences that a blind consumer might find beneficial. (Yes, I know about
the camera)

I'm looking for the short list of features on a 6+ that aren't available
with the "vanilla" 6 that would be useful for a totally blind person.

An Adaptor Question

2014-10-13 Thread Karen Poulakos
Some time ago someone mentioned having some success with an adaptor that
plugs into the earphone jack on the phone, and has a Y connector for
plugging in 2 devices to the phone.

What I'd like to do is plug in an instrument tuner pickup for tuning my
harp, and an earphone so that I can hear Voiceover tell me when a string on
my harp is at the correct pitch. I currently use Talking Tuner, and am
happy with it. However, there are times when I have to tune in a place
where there is to much background noise to tune accurately. A clip on
pickup which plugs into the phone would solve this problem.

Is this possible? I am using a 5S, and have not updated to the current
software.

VoiceOver and the Rotor

2014-10-13 Thread Bill Gallik
I'm having one heck of a time filling in form data in Safari with iOS 8.0.2
and am wondering if the rotor is strictly a VoiceOver feature? I ask
because if the rotor is available without VoiceOver being enabled I'm
thinking that until iOS 8.??? comes along with a fix, I might be able to put
the rotor in "Text" mode, turn off VO, do the gesture to locate the next
form field and turn VO back on to focus on that edit field.

Any thoughts?

Can anybody tell me if there's any place I can go to read about the feature
differences between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+? In particular, feature
differences that a blind consumer might find beneficial. (Yes, I know about
the camera)

I'm looking for the short list of features on a 6+ that aren't available
with the "vanilla" 6 that would be useful for a totally blind person.

Re: Follow-Up: Apps Not Updating From My iPhone4

2014-10-13 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Mark,

I received an email from Apple accessibility this morning. Basically, they
stated that they couldn't do in-depth troubleshooting from this address
(whatever that means) and to start with a restore from backup followed by a
restore to default settings if the other doesn't work. My decision in this
matter is that I'll leave it as is because I'll be purchasing an iPhone 6 in
the near future and turning this one in for whatever credit AT and T will give.
I have bigger fires to put out with my Mac that needs immediate attention.
Thanks for posting.

Best
Eileen

Re: tracking sports scores

2014-10-13 Thread Wayne Merritt
These are good ideas for apps to use. Up until now, I have used alerts
from the NFL Mobile app and custom alerts that I have setup for final
scores from certain teams with the IFTTT (If this, then that) app.
Granted, the IFTTT app doesn't get as detailed as some of the other
apps that have been mentioned, but I am notified about the final
scores of games. I am interested in the apps mentioned here since
there are times when I just want to know the final and don't want to
have to deal with the often craziness of the NFL Mobile app, as far as
getting to the scores and passed the "favorite teams" area.

Deleting Audible books, was: Deleting books from audible?

2014-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Lelias,

I changed the subject a bit just so hopefully the next person who is looking
for this can find it in the archives since I think this is the third time I
am reposting this and I believe Robin reposted it once as well. I hope
you'll also send a message to Audible asking for them to fix the app so we
can once again delete using the Action rotor.

1. Double tap the top delete button, the one that is next to "Refresh.
2. Now double tap on Refresh, for some reason if I don't do this the next
button you need won't show up on my 5S, maybe it would on your phone, but
the Refresh won't do any harm.
3. Find the button called "Edit Mode" to the left of the book you want to
delete. Once again in my case I have to find it by dragging my finger down
the left side of the screen, if I swipe to it and double tap it it won't
work. Once you located the Edit Mode button to the left of the book you want
to delete (each book you downloaded has this button) double tap on it.
4. Now find the corresponding Delete button to the right of the book. Once
again I drag my finger down the very right side of the screen and find the
one I want. If I want to delete the first book in my list it's the first
button, if I have 4 books downloaded and want to delete the fourth one I
have to find the one that is in fourth place from the top. Typically if you
just finished listening to a book and want to delete it, it's at the top
anyways. I usually locate the Refresh button again which is on the very
right above the books and then drag my finger down from there. Once you
found the Delete button double tap on it and you'll be asked to confirm,
after you do so the book is gone.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Follow-Up: Apps Not Updating From My iPhone4

Hello,

This is a follow-up to my post in losing the versions of my updates posted
in the app store. I started at the top and first noticed that the "update
all" button was dimmed. I began to flick through the numerous app updates
and selected one. I hit the update button, but nothing happened and it only
opened the app. I tried to update a handful of apps, but I received the same
results. I did turn off/on the phone before looking into this issue. I then
did a hard reset and it didn't change the problem of the app store update
button, nor the ability to manually update the apps of choice. I did select
the purchase button and most of all the apps had an open button. I checked a
coupld of apps to see if they were updated, but the versions remained from
the present version. Can anyone else think of other troubleshooting
suggestions to try before calling Apple?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Eileen

As I mentioned in my previous message, I was very upset about chime no longer

refund and I am going to try to get chime from my computer.
I hope that other people can do the same. and the iTunes will let us all

substitute than I did. I tried a few and none of them were good.

Re: how to make a group sms on ios devices

2014-10-13 Thread Bill Gallik

Davy

I just asked Siri the very same question. Who makes the best cell phones? She
said, seriously?

So, Allen, you thought your SIRI reply was funny. Here is what mine said
today: as some of you Yanks may know (or not) thanks-giving in Canada is this
weekend. As I finally put my turkey in the oven this afternoon, I told SIRI to
"Set a timer for 3 and a half hours". SIRI came back and said "3 and a half
hours and counting, I can hardly stand the suspense".

Re: My SIRI beat yours, Allen

2014-10-13 Thread Alan Paganelli
I think that giving Siri a sense of humor was probably one of the best features
of Siri. Some folks might be intimidated by the concept if they have never had
a smart phone. My wife has an iPhone 4. She says by golly it can still make
and take phone calls. That's all I need. Last Christmas when we gave each
other an iPad Air she wouldn't touch Siri. When she was looking for something
online and couldn't find what she wanted, I said ask Siri to find it for you.
It took her a few tries to phrase it correctly but in the end, Siri found what
she couldn't. As she now says, Siri can find it much faster. That's how Apple
makes believers out of nonbelievers.

Alan

I have a Chime clock app that does the Westminster chimes. I have it set to
start chiming at 7 AM and stops chiming at 10 PM. The chimes are recorded
digitally and sounds beautiful. There are 3 choices of Westminster plus
Whiting chimes and one other which I can't think of at the time. It does
not have a tick-tock mode thank God. It was free at the time I got it but I
think it's paid now. It's by Yoctoville who makes sure all their apps are
accessible.

Hi,
I believe the instruction from the app's maker suggest turning off
notification center banners and alerts and leaving sounds set to on to
optimize the experience of the app.

I was extremely upset when my phone was replaced and I realized that Chime

and the voice is better.
Best of luck.

I am so afraid that I will loose it when I activate my new phone. Just
got it today. I am excited about getting it. It is the i-phone 6. Oh
well, Just hoping there is another app that will give me a voice instead
of a chime. I like the chime, but I rely on hearing the time, lol.

how to make a group sms on ios devices

2014-10-13 Thread Davy Cuppens
Hey folks

I'll explain what I mean. Sometimes I want to send one message to a
bunch of friends. F.E. I am following a soccer amateur team and I
attend most of the away matches of them. After the game is over, I
want tosend the result to let's say 30 persons on my contact list.
Instead of selecting them all one by one, I'd like to create one
group, select it and send one message to 35 people at once. Is there
an app or possibility to do so?
With my old Nokia Phone, I simplay created a group and selected the
contacts for the fans of that soccer team en finished. Fron that time
on, I simply send one sms to 35 perople without spending minutes of
time to add contacts.
I know there is an app called Igroup so I tried it out but the app
seems not to be very workable.
I am able to create a group; however drag or drop or add contacts is
not possible with voiceover at all, you can use the table index but no
cnontact will be announced at all.
Any ideas how to accomplish this wish?
Best regards
Davy

Apple Rolling Out Revamped iTunes Store to iTunes 12 Users Ahead of OS X Yosemite Launch

2014-10-13 Thread mário navarro
Apple Rolling Out Revamped iTunes Store to iTunes 12 Users Ahead of OS X
Yosemite Launch
MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - Front Page

Apple has started rolling out a new iTunes Store design for OS X Yosemite
testers that have iTunes 12 installed. The revamped storefront takes several
design elements from the iTunes Store and App Store on iOS, adopting a cleaner,
flatter look that does away with a lot of shadowing and texture that was
previously seen in the design. The revamped look fits in with the design of
iTunes 12, which takes on the flatter, more iOS-like look seen across OS X
Yosemite.

For example, the top bar of the iTunes Store that currently displays cards in a
rotating carousel for featured music, movies, apps, and TV shows in their
respective categories has been flattened out into a scrollable banner with the
new iTunes Store design, doing away with the previous card-style layout.

The slight bit of shadowing that used to highlight app icons, music icons, and
categories, has been eliminated and as can be seen in the screenshot below,
Apple is using a slightly lighter and larger font for menu options. The light
gray background of the existing store has now been replaced with a white
background.

Prominent rounded menu buttons have been eliminated in favor of flat,
unobtrusive buttons as can be seen with the “Download” option in the individual
App Store view shown below. Individual content pages have also lost all
highlight shadowing, with screenshots and app icons flat against the background
of the page. Movie, TV Show, and Music pages all have the same flattened
design.

While main content pages now have a white background, some individual movie,
app, TV show, and music pages continue to have a colored background, that also
adopts all of the flat interface elements.

As noted by 9to5Mac, the new design has not yet been implemented on all pages,
with some, like the gift card redemption page, continuing to use older
interface elements.

iTunes 12 will launch alongside OS X Yosemite, which is expected to be released
to the public in late October. The operating system may be shown off one last
time at Apple’s October 16 iPad event ahead of its official launch.

Michael,

If your Jambox is connected anmd a call comes in just press the main button,
the round one, it answers incoming calls and hangs up calls which are in
progress.

Keep in mind that if you have a bluetooth speaker or headset connected and you
answer the call on the phone it is automatically routed to the phone's
earpiece, you have to answer the call from the Jambox if you want it on the
Jambox.

I should also mention that the speakerphone quality of the Jambox is not that
great and it's probably not something you want to use for an extended call, at
least I don't. You hear the other person well, but you will not sound good to
them.

There are few bluetooth speakers out there especially those who are primarily
designed for music which offer acceptable call quality.

I am not sure what you mean by stereo on your Jambox and not stereo on your
laptop. I actually don't think the Jambox plays true stereo, it is just a
single little speaker after all. I don't know what laptop you have and why you
think it doesn't play in stereo. There are definitely some new laptops out
there especially the higher-end 15 and 17 inch models which have very good
built-in speakers and some of them even have built-in subwovers.

Sieghard

I want to apologize for steering anyone wrong with my recommendation of the
timely app.
As I mentioned in my previous message, I was very upset about chime no
longer being in the App Store. It seemed at first, as if timely would solve
the problem. However, it doesn't seem to maintain the settings. I have
received a refund and I am going to try to get chime from my computer.
I hope that other people can do the same. and the iTunes will let us all
restore it. If not, maybe someone else will have better luck at finding a
substitute than I did. I tried a few and none of them were good.

possible to use your Apple ID password to log into iCloud Mail even if

sign in with your Apple ID, verify your identity, click the passwords

RE: Bluetooth Scannars and DigitEyes

2014-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chris,

I haven't used one with Digit Eyes and the ones available are very expensive
(several hundred Dollars I believe) but it would most definitely be super
efficient. I own a retail business and we use USB barcode scanners and they
are very fast and easy to use. You can swipe it across one side of a package
very quickly and from a foot or so away and if there is a barcode anywhere
it will usually pick it up. It's not like with the iPhone camera which needs
to focus and so on and good lighting is not a big deal either.

the Bluetooth scanners can help.

RE: Will my iPhone 6+ eventually replace my iPad?

2014-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Rob,

For us blind folks the 5.5 inch screen maybe a great size for at home, but
most sighted people prefer the iPad Mini or iPad Air size simply because
they can see more information on the screen. It is my guess that Apple will
come out with a larger iPad soon enough, some rumours even say something
like a 12.9 inch iPad will be announced on Thursday. Others say it will most
likely not be until fall 2015 and I guess we'll know soon enough if there
will be one this year.
A large tablet like this will be of great interest to a lot of people once
iOS allows for a split screen where you can have 2 apps going at the same
time in different windows on the screen. This once again is something many
expect might be in iOS 9 next year and if not then almost certainly iOS 10
in 2016 will have it.

Sieghard

RE: Deleting characters in search field of app store and clearing search does not work on IOS 8.0.2

2014-10-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, this is a known bug which has been mentioned a few times since the release
of iOS 8 a month ago. If you double tap the Clear All button 2 or 3 times
(until you hear the bonk sound which indicates there is no more text there) you
can type in another search. Voiceover will still say your previous search
string is there, but it actually isn't.

Subject: Deleting characters in search field of app store and clearing search
does not work on IOS 8.0.2

Hello all,
I am using an iPhone5s with IOS 8.0.2. Today, when I went to the app store, I
noticed that when I searched the store and pressed delete on a character that
VoiceOver would not announce the character being deleted. Ultimately, I double
tapped on delete and held it down thus deleting the whole entry and putting in
the correct letters of the app I was looking for. Has anyone else noticed this
issue?
Also, I noticed that when clearing the search using the clear text field item
that text is not cleared. This is when going back to the app store from the app
switcher. I tried double tapping and also a double tap and hold but the text
would still not clear and again I had to delete the entire entry using the
above method.
Has anyone noticed this and have a solution?
Thanks in advance for any responses

Deleting characters in search field of app store and clearing search does not work on IOS 8.0.2

2014-10-13 Thread Shai
Hello all,
I am using an iPhone5s with IOS 8.0.2. Today, when I went to the app
store, I noticed that when I searched the store and pressed delete on
a character that VoiceOver would not announce the character being
deleted. Ultimately, I double tapped on delete and held it down thus
deleting the whole entry and putting in the correct letters of the app
I was looking for. Has anyone else noticed this issue?
Also, I noticed that when clearing the search using the clear text
field item that text is not cleared. This is when going back to the
app store from the app switcher. I tried double tapping and also a
double tap and hold but the text would still not clear and again I had
to delete the entire entry using the above method.
Has anyone noticed this and have a solution?
Thanks in advance for any responses
