Re: CAlex and voice dream reader
I was going to ask this myself but I now have the answer thanks to this thread. Disappointed but can live with it as I use Ivona Amy as my voice for Voice Dream Reader. But I do have an observation. If it can use all of the built in iOS voices then I can't see a reason why Alex cannot be used. Just my £0.02 worth. Re: bard mobile download question
There are two ways to download a book on the BARD Mobile app. Either search for the tile, then add title to the wish list which is different than you do on a PC where you can directly download the book after the search. Once the book is on your wish list, if you double tap the title, you can then download it. The other way to download a book is to tap the arrow to the right of each title, which brings up a new screen. Re: WIFI with new OS
I am finding this issue on my 5S too on 8.1: mostly when I come out of an app that has not been using wifi (like a podcast app), I suddenly discover that wifi has dropped out and I'm on cellular data. I then have to go into settings, wifi and search and tap on my wifi network. apple terms and conditions in IOS 8.1

Re: third party keyboard
I use the Anker Ultraslim keyboard, which has an aluminum frame. It doesn't have a numpad, but it does have function and modifier keys. It supposedly works with Windows, but I haven't tried that yet. It has dedicated media keys for the function keys, an eject key, and a home key, which you use with the FN key to simulate the escape command. I bought it at Amazon for about $25 US. The battery life is very long, and it has a built-in LI battery. I'm quite happy with it. RE: another bug squashed in 8.1
Opening email attachments in iOS 8.0 or 8.0.2 worked fine, but you had to make sure you used a 3-finger swipe up to scroll through all the pages of the email to the last page where the attachments are always listed at the bottom of the email. I believe somebody said it also worked to touch the buttons at the bottom (Mark Message, Move, Delete, Reply and Compose) and then to swipe left to the attachments. I did, however, try this just now and it didn't seem to work for me. IOS 8 on an iPhone 4S and space used [was Re: Homesharing]
IOS 8 runs fine on an iPhone 4S. You'll run into the same issues found in IOS 8 on all iPhones. I think some complicated web pages and email messages load a bit slower than they did on IOS 7, but other than that it actually seems snappier in most places. I don't know what you mean by space. You don't free up any space by installing IOS 8, unless the images have already been downloaded. I'm not sure how big the install images are, but you'll get that space back after you install those images. I almost didn't read this message because I'm not interested in home sharing at the moment. Voiceover Activating Paste over and over again with my External Keyboard
Hi, all, I'm having a very weird problem that just cropped up in the last few days. While in an edit field with Voiceover on and QuickNav off, the contents of my clipboard are pasted over and over, and nothing seems to stop it. I tried turning Voiceover off and entering the text on the keyboard, then turning Voiceover back on, and the text is entered perfectly. At first, I had thought that a key on my keyboard was physically stuck, but this seems to be a Voiceover issue. I've tried unpairing and pairing my Bluetooth devices again, but that didn't work. I've rebooted my iPod, too. No change. Can anyone suggest something to tweak? If not, set the default to 156 and hopefully that will get you Samantha, and set the other as Alex. It was some combination of those steps that got me back to having both. Re: third party keyboard
Sieghard , This is the reason I almost always delete your messages without reading them. You are full of misguided opinions and misinformation. The running joke in my household is when voice over announces Sieghard everyone here says 'Delete. This is from the developers of Fleksy: What about the Apple third-party keyboard warning message when allowing Full Access? When you allow full access, you will encounter a warning message stating full access allows the developer to transmit anything you type, including things you have previously typed with this keyboard. This could include sensitive information such as your credit card number or street address. This alert appears whenever any third-party input method is allowed full access. Fleksy is designed NOT to receive or log such sensitive data. Here’s how: - Fleksy can collect three types of data: - Crash Data, including crash logs, in an anonymous format. - Settings Data such as setting preferences, gesture usage, and number of words typed with Fleksy. - Language Modeling Data such as common phrases or words that you use when typing with Fleksy. - We never collect any type of data without your explicit permission. - Language Modeling Data collection is disabled by default for all our products, and is not enabled during the installation process. - We do not log data entered into password or credit card fields. - When a user voluntarily opts in to supply Language Modeling Data to us, we always encrypt it both for transmission and storage, and host it in third party hosting facilities with industry leading security infrastructure. - We do NOT link any Language Modeling Data with your name, phone number, email address, or any other personal identifier. - Language Modeling Data is only used in anonymous format to help improve Fleksy’s product and services. Re: Siri Launching Issues
I am definitely having issues with dictation. I can start dictation, dictate and then end dictation. Then it is followed by all kinds of unintelligible voiceover stuttering and a sound simillar to the sound when my iPhone switches from portrait to landscape and vice versa over and over again for several seconds. This usually lasts around ten seconds and then finally I hear voiceover speak my dictation and then everything seems normal after that and my dictation is indeed in the text field. It's very weird. Re: Missing a lot of sent mail since upgrading to iOS eight
No, the sent mail did not get put into archive. But I just now found out that for some weird reason, I have two sent folders both under my Gmail account. And one of them has all of the sent mail going back to forever and includes messages up till now. Theother one is the one that I had been previously looking at, which has only a small number of sent messages, all of them old. I have no clue why or how I have two sent folders. But there you go. I have not seen that on my Mac, but I haven't looked recently either. For what it's worth, I've gotten some good information from Sieghard, and seen him provide tons of help to users newer to iOS than I. Saying that nearly everything he sends is worthy only of being deleted is not only against the rules of this list, it's simply inaccurate. iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Hi, Based on one’s financial situation, what is your opinion about getting an iPhone 5S as opposed to iphone 6? Please give me your honest opinion. Yes, I’m looking at the matter from the point of view of someone who will have to take a small loan to get a new iPhone. So I’d like to know whether I would notice a significant difference in performance between iPhone 5S and iPhone 6? Many of you on the list have been using iPhone for a variety of tasks in difficult situations. Please let me have your experiences. I read that iPhone 5S has a A7 chip which would make it possible for me to use Alex. I guess it has more other opportunities, advantages, I mean. On the other hand, iPhone 6 offers the A8 chip and maybe just maybe a different future possibility? Please let me hear your voices experiences. I’m not a particularly powerful iPhone user as yet. There are polite ways to disagree with another list members opinion without being snarky. I’m really not interested in your pointless attacks on list members whose opinions differ from yours. If you thought what you wrote about Sieghard made you look smart and oh so witty, it really came across as very shallow and nasty. I can’t tell you the number of times Sieghard has sent me information off list that has been accurate and very helpful. Re: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Dear Andrew, My suggestion is to obtain the iPhone 6. I recommend this because the high quality design and manufacture of these devices means that if the phone is protected in a hard case, it will last far longer than the operating systems and apps on the phone. At a certain point, the phone won't support certain functionality and new iOS releases. iPhones have an expiration date. Currently, it is about four years from the time of a new iphone and iOS version until Apple no longer supports the phone with updates. If you were to buy a 5s, you will reach the expiration date sooner than if you wer to buy the 6. I realize your thought process. For the blind iPhone user, the six is a minor incremental improvement. The biggest benifits are in a larger screen and improved camera. The processor is just 25 percent faster. Processor speeds doubled in the 5 and 5s compared to their previous models. battery life is slightly longer in the six compared to the 5s. To me the issue is the useful life of the phone and when it might need replacement. Logitech Ultra Thin BT Keyboard
Hi Everyone, I just purchased the Logitech Ultra Thin Bluetooth keyboard for my Ipad mini with retina display. When the keyboard is on, the virtual keyboard disappears on the Ipad. RE: Logitech Ultra Thin BT Keyboard
Linda, The virtual keyboard always disappears on any iDevice if a bluetooth keyboard is connected. However, most bluetooth keyboards have a button which you can press to show the virtual keyboard or, press it again, to hide it again. On the Apple Wireless keyboard that button is the very top right button, to the very right on the function key row. You would have to check if the Logitech keyboard you have has such a button. RE: most accessible skype?
Dan, There is only one Skype for the iPhone and it is indeed extremely accessible. I would probably go so far as to say that Skype right now is at its peak accessibility. I am not sure why you had the problems you describe. I just installed Skype on my wife's iPod Touch and when I opened it for the first time I was asked if I wanted to sign in with a Skype name or create an account and of course since I already have my Skype account I chose the first option. I typed in my Skype Id and password without any issues. Maybe try to empty your app switcher and give your phone a reboot to see if that fixes the sluggishness. RE: third party keyboard
Chuck, I posted about a warning regarding third-party keyboards I heard about on the Today in iOS Podcast. If you feel that what I said was misguided and that I was attempting to misinform people than that is of course your right and the same applies to how you feel about my messages in general. I did not make any sort of claim that Fleksie was doing what the warning is warning people about, I merely provided the information and a link to an article where people can read about this and that giving any developer this level of access I something I personally worry about. If you felt I was writing to you privately then maybe you can let me know which screenreader and mail program you are using and I will offer some advice on how you can easily check whether a message comes from the list or from an individual and also how you can make sure your reply goes to where you intend it to go. I am, however, glad that you have mastered the use of the delete key and I would in fact recommend you set up a filter so that any messages which come from me go straight to your Trash mailbox and that way you won’t ever have to worry about them. RE: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Hi Andrew, I would normally agree with Kelly and recommend the iPhone 6. However, given what you said about your financial situation may not make it worthwhile. If you could find a really good deal on a 5S (I would probably wait and see what promotions come around for Black Friday and Cyber Monday) then the 5S will be an awesome upgrade for you. As Kelly pointed out, the difference in speed between the A7 and A8 is not nearly as significant as it was between the A6 and the A7 and for all practical purposes the camera improvements between a 5S and a 6 will be irrelevant for you. Whether the somewhat better battery performance is a major factor depends on how you use the phone and I would say that if you take good care of your device that you will easily be able to use it for the next 4 years even if during the last year you may not be able to upgrade to the new OS any more. I also feel that any smartphone like this doesn't have much more than a 4-year life span and providers certainly make it easy for people to upgrade after 2 or 3 years by offering upgrade options with contract which are either free or cost maybe $100 which is in most people's reach. Re: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Hi Andrew. I agree with Sieghard about getting a 5S. I know with myself when I got my 5S, I was only getting $60 for my 4S. I wanted a 32 GB 5S but I settled for 16 because it was only $100 so I only had to pay about $40 for it plus $15 for the sim card from Telus. As for processors, I'm not a power user as well. I don't use Safari because I have a Mac to surf the internet with. So the A7 chip is good enough for me. As long as I can use Alex on my phone, that's good enough for me. Yes, it's normal for your on screen keyboard to disappear when using a bluetooth keyboard. For a list of bleutooth keyboard commands I'd refer you to http://help.apple.com/iphone/5/voiceover/en/iph6c494dc6.html I don't have this web page bookmarked, but I just find it with Google whenever I need it. I don't know of a podcast, but you might find something with Google. Re: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Andrew, Besides buying a used 5S, another way to save money on iPhone ownership is in the choice of wireless service. I wrote the article iPhone on the Cheap on AppleVis. by using a carrier other than AtT or Verizon, one could pay one-third the cost of wireless service. Often this means simply switching to a virtual network operator that buys data and minutes from the major companies in bulk and resells them at a discount. RE: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Hello Andrew and Shawn, Shawn, you made a good point which I forgot. The support for Apple Pay would be a very compelling reason for me to get a 6 if I was living in the States. But as you mentioned, Canada won't see Apple Pay for a while although it would be my guess that Apple Pay will be in Canada before too long as our financial and credit card systems are similar. I fully expect that I will upgrade again next year, but with Apple Pay taken out of the equasion there really isn't enough reason to upgrade from a 5S to a 6. As far as how much of a compelling reason Apple Pay is for you, Andrew, that is entirely up to you. I am very intriqued by it and feel it is very well thought out and implemented based on what I heard about it. It appears to be an Apple product in the old way when Apple would not release half-baked stuff as they sometimes have done in the last couple of years. Re: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
I generally agree with the advice to purchase a five s rather than a six. As for those carriers other than the big three, it's great, as long as there is good service in your area. You have to really check into that, or you can be sorry. I don't see any reason to buy a six at this time. I purchased a 5S earlier this year, and I'm happy I did. I expect you will be seeing good deals on the 5S in the coming days. Try to get something more than 16 GB however, because that is rather restricting. Re: iPhone 5S vs. iphone 6
Although if money wasn't a factor I would choose the 6 over the 5s for the reasons already stated, one factor which I feel is even more important is the amount of memory on the phone. I would suggest that it is more important over the long run to have at least a 32gb phone than it is to have a 6. Although we have Apple Pay in the U.s. many of us can't use it because our banks don't support it yet. I will also say that even though people say the difference in the battery life between the 5s and 6 is not that large, I find it to be quite significant. The difference in price between the two phone should only be $100 which I know can be a lot of money. The bottom line is that you need to decide which of the feature changes you care about. RE: most accessible skype?
Hi Lori, Have you used Skype on the computer? Basically you can do the same things, for example, you can talk to other Skype users either via audio or you can do video calls and that is always free except of course if you do it via 3G or LTE in which case it will use up data from your data plan. If you are on WiFi then it just goes via your home internet just as if you were using Skype on the computer. You can also send instant messages to other Skype users and you can share files. For example today a friend called me from Germany and I wanted him to look at a picture I had of 5 Mule Deer in my garden so I just sent it to him via Skype while we were talking. You can also use Skype to call regular landlines and mobiles or to send SMS messages, but for that you will have to either buy Skype credit which is used on a per call or per message bases or you would have to buy one of their plans. If you were to buy a plan for unlimited phone calls to landlines and mobiles covering the United States and Canada then that would cost you $2.95 a month or you can prepay for an entire year and get I think a 15% discount. For the Unlimited North America plan it works out to I think just over $30 per year. IOS 8.1 on IPhone 6
I am wondering if the problems being encountered with the new IOS is as pronounced on the new IPhone as opposed to the older models? I have a 5S and have not yet upgraded to the new IOS. Until some of the worse bugs are fixed I am sticking to 7. Normally I upgrade within the first week of a new release but I have not heard of enough advantages to make it worth the frustration. RE: IOS 8.1 on IPhone 6
Hi Marie, iOS 8 runs just as well on a 5S as it does on a 6 or 6 Plus. The new A8 processor in those phones is faster than the A7, but not actually by a lot especially not when it comes to normal day-to-day stuff and the difference is not nearly as pronounced as it was last year when the A7 was introduced. The A7 is already a 64 Bit processor and apart from the new iPad Air 2 which now has 2 Gb of RAM, all other new iOS devices released this fall including the 6 and 6 Plus still have 1 Gb just as the 5S. One very nice feature of iOS 8 is what Apple calls Continuity and the new hand off feature, but that of course only really benefits people who have multiple iOS devices running iOS 8 or people who want to work seamlessly on their Mac running OSX Yosemite and their iPhone or iPad running iOS 8. Another nice new feature is the ability to send audio messages to other iOS users who have iOS 8 installed and iMessage enabled. There are also many other new features which have all been discussed at various times over the last 6 weeks or so, but how much you would benefit from them all depends on how much of a power user you are and whether some of the new features are important to you. The iOS 8.1 update has fixed some annoying bugs, but some still persist. RE: most accessible skype?
Yes, you do have to have a Skype Id or, if you have a Microsoft Id you could use it to sign in and you can even sign in with your Facebook credentials. I personally prefer to use my Skype Id because I don’t always think it’s a good idea to share/mix up these things. I am especially careful what I share with Facebook because even though you might be able to control what information you share with Facebook, it’s easy to overlook something and next thing you know is that you have given them access to something you didn’t intend them to have. Anyhow, just go to www.Skype.com http://www.Skype.com , click on the Sign In link and then on the next page you can look for a link called “Create Account”. You have to enter your first and last name and whichever email address you want to use, you also have to choose a Skype Name which can be anything you want like “Lori123” or whatever, then you have to select a password and there is a captcha, but the “Listen” link provides an audio captcha which is not too difficult to understand. There is also a profile section where you can fill in information about where you live (city/country), your birthday and gender and so on. This is all information you can fill in, but it is not mandatory and you can also add or complete this later under your Profile. Once you have a Skype Id you can give it to others or you can add others to your Contact list. You can then see if people are online and you can send them messages or call them. I believe you can also create an account right from within the Skype app on your iPhone, but I would probably choose to do it on the computer which of course is strictly my preference.
