RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks

Undulib is available on the Appstore now. On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 2:52:17 AM UTC-4, M. Taylor wrote: Hello Everyone, This post comes under the heading of look before you leap: I enjoy downloading old-time radio dramas such as the Mystery Theater and Beyond Midnight as .mp3 files, then tagging them as Audio Books in iTunes and then listening to them in the native iOS app. So, for example, I have three episodes from the Beyond Midnight radio series. The three titles are Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room. These are .mp3 files that, after being imported into iTunes, I change their media type to Audio Book. Now because I have them tagged as Beyond Midnight, under the Album field, in the Title field, I can list the actual episode names as listed above. In iOS 8.3 and earlier, after syncing to my iOS device, I would then simply select Audiobooks from within the native music app, and then I would see Beyond Midnight listed as a single book. After single-finger double-tapping on the title, I would then see each episode listed by name. No longer. To my complete dismay, I now discover that in iOS 8.4, the iBooks app does not list the individual episodes by names or chapter titles but simply list them as tracks. This means that when I now select Beyond Midnight, under contents, all I see are track 1, track 2, and track 3. Try as I may, I cannot figure out how to get each episode listed by its episode title or chapter heading. At first, I thought this was an oversight until I did a search on Google and discovered the following excerpt from Mac Rumors that described this issue back near the beginning of the beta cycle: [Begin Excerpt] Currently, in iOS 8.3, a users' audiobook library is divorced from their ebook library, forcing users to use two different apps to access their entire digital book library. The new update consolidates all books in Apple's iBooks app and also fixes another longstanding issue with audiobooks on iOS. Since iOS 7, audiobook listeners have been unable to view chapter titles or even select them. However, pazimi points out that while chapters are now selectable in iOS 8.4, they do not list the actual chapter titles, as they're listed as track numbers. [End Excerpt] The URL for the entire article can be found at: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/04/14/audiobooks-ios-8-4-beta/ This issue occurs in both iTunes 11.x and the very latest version of iTunes 12. Fortunately for me, I have not yet updated my beloved 6 Plus to iOS 8.4. Although I doubt it will make any difference to Apple, I will send a bug report via the bug reporting portal. If any of you have discovered a tagging method that will allow for the individual chapter titles to be respected in audiobooks, in the iBooks app, please post. If I had updated to the latest iOS without doing some testing, over 70 episodes of my radio dramas would have been reduced to mere track numbers on my phone. All indications are that there will be a new one coming out this fall which is going to be vastly improved and you will be available to subscribe to many regular TV channels with it. I believe Apple is still signing more deals with stations/channels because they want to be able to offer a cable alternative and you will not be able to get this with the current third generation Apple TV which hasn’t been updated in about 3 years. The rumours are that the new Apple TV will have SIRI, its own app store and a touch screen remote. I take it for granted that it has Voiceover and will be fully accessible just as the current Apple TV is. You can of course check on Applevis for Apple TV Podcasts and go to www.apple.com http://www.apple.com/ and read all about the current Apple TV there, but all that information is going to change when the fourth generation Apple TV is announced. It appears Apple also sees it as a sort of hub for current and future home automation products which of course would make a lot of sense since it is sitting in your home, it’s connected to your WiFi and hence the world via the internet and it could easily talk to any home automation products like thermostats, lights, locks and so on. I think it will be very much a game changer and right now rumours predict Apple will have their event on Wednesday, September 9 and some expect that this event will not only just introduce the new iPhones for this year, but also the new iPad Pro with a 12 or 13 inch screen and the new Apple TV. If so it will be quite an event. Of course iOS 9 will be released to the public about a week after the event. As for Jonathan’s book about the Apple TV, that is currently available on his website, here is the direct link: http://mosen.org/index.php/mosen-consulting-ebook-apple-tv-3rd-generation-with-voiceover/ http://mosen.org/index.php/mosen-consulting-ebook-apple-tv-3rd-generation-with-voiceover/ I am sure, however, Jonathan will rewrite this book once the fourth generation Apple TV is out. Re: Native twitter app question
Hi Andrea, If you are on the home tab: 1. Double tap on the tweet of the person whose timeline you wish to view to open the tweet. 2. 2. Double tap on the name of the person whose tweet you are viewing. This allows you to view their profile. 3. On this page you can view their latest tweets. You can also do this from your list of those who you follow and of whom you follow. To find these lists, tap on the Me tab at the bottom right of the screen. Hope this helps. RE: Apple Tv
That depends on your TV. If they have HDMI inputs you are good to go. If not you either have to buy a new TV or you can get adapters which can handle the conversion from HDMI (that is the output on the Apple TV) to one of the older input methods like RCA/composit. Alternatively, many newer surround sound receivers have HDMI inputs and all sorts of outputs including RCA/composit. Is your TV already an LCD or Plasma or is it one of the old big cube style tube TV’s? I bought my Sony LCD TV in I think 2008 or 2009 and it already had 2 HDMI inputs. I believe Apple is still signing more deals with stations/channels because they want to be able to offer a cable alternative and you will not be able to get this with the current third generation Apple TV which hasn’t been updated in about 3 years. You can of course check on Applevis for Apple TV Podcasts and go to www.apple.com and read all about the current Apple TV there, but all that information is going to change when the fourth generation Apple TV is announced. Introduction
Hello everyone, Back in April I switched back from Android for personal reasons. I started off back in 2009 with the first 3gs and in 2012 switched over to Android. I am now using a iPhone 6+ and I am really liking it. There is a lot I miss from Android, mainly all the customizing I could do, but what I miss is not a deal breaker. My battery life is excellent on the 6+. I am a bit disappointed in the app store though. There are a lot more free apps on the Google Play store compared to the Apple App Store. Also when in the world did they start charging tax on apps bought in the app store? RE: Apple Tv
But what is there now is not nearly what is going to be there. Of course Apple may make a lot of the new channels they will offer available to third gen Apple TV users, but we won’t know until they announce what is coming. I am quite sure that from what I have heard that the hardware of the third gen Apple TV will not be up to what is planned and with a new Apple TV only weeks away after 3 years of waiting I think it would be a poor choice to buy one at least until we know what Apple is doing. There is talk about SIRI integration, possibly a new Apple TV will have 4K support rather than just 1080P and so on. Thanks, Harry, I had not looked in the Library submenu, but I now found the iCloud library update option and iTunes seems to be happily matching/uploading songs. From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Harry Bell Sent: Monday, August 17, 2015 12:53 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: iTunes message: iCloud needs upload It took Apple Music 3 solid days to go through my large iTunes library on a fast broadband connection, so I'd suggest that, with iTunes app open, you could go to File -- Library -- Update iCloud Library and then give it some time for the Activity indicator at top right of the window to stop. You can then see if your library looks more sorted. If not, you can simply go to iTunes -- Preferences and unlock Use iCloud Music Library then Ok, close the itunes app then reopen, go again to iTunes -- Preferences and tick Use iCloud Music Library and then OK. iTunes then begins anew to configure your iCloud Music Library. Disappearing audiobooks in the audible app
With the most recent update of the audible app, I am seeing books come and go. These are on my device or in the cloud. It's most frustrating, and I cannot manage to get them all back To stay. They always come back with a refresh, but should I continuously have to refresh even after I just close the player and want to go back to the book I was just reading? Is anyone else having this problem and how to fix it? Mary Sent from my iPad -- The following information is important for all members of the VIPhone list. Re: Audible iOS app version 2.5.5, starting and stopping audio
Hi Everyone, I thought I’d post a follow-up message to give an update on this issue as I heard from audible on Monday. I’m glad to report that the issue is now one that is known to them and has been duplicated at will which means they recognize it’s state as being broken. And it is an issue that all running the latest build do experience. To recreate the issue open any book resident on your device and start reading. If the two finger double tap works to start and stop audio in the first book this is expected behavior. but once you switch to another book resident on your device the gesture stops working. Audible were the ones who nailed down that it always fails once you switch to your second book. Hopefully it’ll be fixed sooner rather than later. But Jonathan the helpful rep with whom I spoke did say the more voices in the chorus demanding its fix the better it would be. And he suggested submitting a bug report from within the app but also submitting it via phone as the latter is more likely to generate a ticket number for resolution. Their number is: 888-283-5051 that’s all I’ve got so far. Happy reading one and all. Re: Deleting all nail messages on IOS devices
I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you. I used to have the problem of having thousands of emails build up on my iPhone. This was before I switched my gmail from POP to IMAP. Now that I switched to IMAP if I truly have a ton of emails to delete I get on my computer to do it. It’s just easier for me. When you use iMAP whatever is on my phone and my computer basically match. If I delete on one, then the other reflects that. They are basically synced. So, back in the day when I used to have POP and had thousands of emails build up, I would just go into settings under the mail portion and delete my gmail account and then all of my emails would delete. Then I would re add my gmail account and then I’d only have the most recent 50 emails show up on my iPhone. I know, this is kind of stupid but it was the fastest way for me to get rid of thousands of emails off of my phone. Please, if you do this, do it with caution and make sure that you really understand what is going on before you do it. It never deleted my messages off of the gmail server but I am sure that I had particular settings in gmail that kept copies on the server so I still had access to the emails because I did not have gmail set up to delete emails once they are downloaded from the server. I’m so sorry but I am no tech geek and therefore cannot really help you any further and I dont even know if you are using gmail. I just thought that maybe if I shared some thoughts you could do some research to get the best results for your particular situation. ITUNES PROBLEMS OVER PAST YEAR
Hi all, Many of us hate iTunes with a passion and use it as little as possible. However, I am aware that there have been many times when I've read that's broken in this upgrade ... and really think that Apple just don't have their act together when it comes to iTunes for VI's, so far as the Windows version is concerned that is. I'd really like to address this by writing to accessibil...@apple.com but feel I am not sufficiently able with iTunes to explain what's not worked and why. If anyone feels we should address this issue by writing, I'd be happy to do this as an individual but only if someone who is competent enough could outline some of the things that are wrong, at least at this present time. Personally, I just wish it was much more straightforward with good keyboard support, but whether it's sufficient just to say that and draw their attention to the fact that so many of us just can't get to grips with it I'm not really sure. Any comments and thoughts welcome. Carol P -- The following information is important for all members of the VIPhone list. iPhone 5s
Hi all the iPhone 5s it's good isn't it? I even have Touch ID set up and enabled and it really works as far as unlocking my phone goes. Not tried purchasing from the iTunes or App Stores yet but am confident that will work too. I also have my favourite Alex voice. Personally, I like the sound of him on the 5s. I also like the overall volume it can get very loud can't it? I can hear it with clarity at just 50% volume. -- The following information is important for all members of the VIPhone list. Since Raul has had other responsibilities of late, I will be the sole list moderator in addition to continuing as list owner. From now on, the posting privileges of new members will no longer be moderated. I sincerely appreciate your understanding in this. :) Now, as mentioned above, in regard to new members having been placed on moderated status, there have been a number of people who have written me of late to say they have had trouble posting. Please bear in mind that this occasionally can be a Google issue. However, having said this, let me offer my sincere and deepest apologies to anyone over the past months who has encountered (or is encountering) issues posting to the group. Please, even if you have already emailed me recently about difficulties in posting, may I impose on you one last time and ask that you email me one more time, as soon as you can so I can address all of these issues beginning this week? Also, to those of you who would be possibly interested in assisting with list moderation, feel free to write me at your convenience. As you all know, this is a voluminous list with very high traffic. Re: iTunes message: iCloud needs upload
It took Apple Music 3 solid days to go through my large iTunes library on a fast broadband connection, so I'd suggest that, with iTunes app open, you could go to File -- Library -- Update iCloud Library and then give it some time for the Activity indicator at top right of the window to stop. Saying that iTunes Music has still a few bugs seems a considerable understatement... If I right click on the song I see no option to upload the track, but I do have a “Remove download” option in the menu that comes up. In the iTunes preferences in the General tab I do have “Show Apple Music” checked and there is also a checkmark next to an item called “iCloud Music Library” followed by my Apple Id email. I like the idea of Apple Music and love the SIRI integration, but I do agree with many reviews and opinions that it is complicated and apparently there are still issues which need to be fixed. I used to strictly manage what music I have on my iPhone via iTunes, but after I had to do a factory restore after briefly running a couple of early versions of the iOS 9 beta and downgrading again to 8.4, I have not yet synced any music to my iPhone manually. If I open the music app and go to the “My Music” tab, I see a bunch of music which is all stuff I bought from iTunes, but nothing else. Shouldn’t the music on my laptop which is in my iTunes library upload to my iCloud Music Library and then be available on my iPhone? Hi, Greg, First of all, welcome to the list! You'll find many interesting topics and a lot of pointers and answers to questions. As far as I've been using iTunes, and the App Store, (and I started using Apple products in 2012), I've always paid tax. I never did on Amazon when I used to buy music from them, but I've not been on Amazon to buy music in a long time. I also have a 6+ and absolutely love it. I like the fact that the battery lasts longer than it did in my iPhone 5. I first started out with a fourth generation iPod touch and now it seems obsolete! ☺️ Take care and I hope you enjoy this list. Esther Levegnale Sent From Esther's Amazing and Awesome iPhone 6+! Re: Apple Tv
If you have the extra money why wait for the new Apple TV which we do not know when it will be coming, you can buy an Apple TV on Amazon currently for $50, totally worth it. And on another note you do not need a TV to connect it to if you have a receiver or Sound Bar as I hooked mine up without a TV via optical cable $5 bucks for the cable on Amazon. Good luck. The Roku box has absolutely no excess ability whatsoever, and was almost impossible for me to see what was on the screen. I plan to wait and see what the new AppleTV brings, I may buy it and replace my current Apple TV box, which I bought about a month ago. -- The following information is important for all members of the VIPhone list.
