Re: New York Times piece on smart devices in the home

2016-06-15 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
To answer the question, we don't want our devices to try being smarter than we
are. The case of the blender being - it tell you
you're doing it wrong, and only cos the programmer knows less about your job
than you do, but presuming you don't.

We have enough of this from other humanity, without the 'bots making a habit of
it too.

Re: WWDC event, was it yesterday?

2016-06-15 Thread Gary Petraccaro
That will change when Apple starts getting real competition from other
smartphone makers, or the blind start calling/writing the access people and
requesting features such as what you want. If that doesn't do it, then Apple
just has certain established attitudes toward their product and feels no reason
to change them. One of those, the failure of Siri to open shazam or Google
seems to me to be based on Apple's making a competitive product and not wanting
it's operating system to give a leg up to a product not Apple's own.

  Hi Jonathan,

Well, isn’t that nice of Apple. They make such a big deal of how they are
opening up the API’s for all of these iOS features to developers but they
conveniently forget to mention that really they don’t. As much as I like my
iphone and what Apple is doing in many areas, it is very annoying that they are
so backwards in other ways.

Hi Sieghard, sad to say, Siri won't be opening your Audible book any time
soon. For iOS 10.0, the Siri API will only work with six kinds of application:
ride booking, messaging , Photo Search, payments, Calling, and Workouts.

So, Siri won't be able to open a book in Voice Dream, Bard, or any other
third-party book app. It won't be able to play music for you on Spotify or
Pandora. It won't be able to play the most recent episode of a podcast using
third-party podcast apps. I have no idea why Apple is so tone deaf to how far
it is lagging behind in this space, but what they're coming out with is only
going to improve the situation slightly.

Hi Devin,

Yes, some of it sounds very nice, but as others have pointed out, there
isn't much that is really groundbreaking. Collaboration in documents is
something Microsoft has been offering for years and it is high time Apple
opened up their API's to developers especially the one for SIRI. They pointed
out that SIRI has been around for 5 years now and if you really think about it
SIRI now is not a lot better than it was 5 years ago. Yes, it's a bit faster
with dictation and can pull information from a few more sources, but why is it
still not possible to say "Call Kevin from Bigrock Sports" just to give an
example of one of my contacts where I have at least 3 or 4 Kevins in my
contacts who all work for different companies. I can't even create a contact
where I just enter a company name in the company name field and a single phone
number and say, for example, "Call Bigrock Sports". I have to also put the
company name in the last name field to do this. I should be able to say "Show
me all my contacts who work at Bigrock Sports" or I should be able to tell SIRI
to "Turn Voiceover Hints On or Off", but all of these things SIRI can't do.
Another example: I can tell SIRI to "Remind me about my dentist appointment on
Friday at 3 PM", but if I say "Remind me about my 3 PM dentist appointment on
Friday at 2 PM" it will say it will remind me and when I check what SIRI
created I see it created the reminder for 3 PM whereas I want to be reminded at
2 PM that my appointment is at 3 PM. There is a complicated way to say it so it
does what I want, but I should be able to say it anyway I like or even in two
parts like "Remind me about my dentist appointment at 3 PM on Friday" and when
SIRI says it will I should be able to bring it up again and say "Start
reminding me once an hour starting at 11 AM and it should understand that I
want a reminder at 11 AM, Noon, 1 PM and 2 PM and maybe by its own intelligence
SIRI should remind me again 15 minutes before if it detects my iPhone is not
moving. This is true artificial intelligence, it already exists, the iPhone has
the processing power to do it and so do Apple's servers.
I can't say how much I look forward to being finally able to say "Play the
Audible book I am currently listening to" or, if I have not started one but
have a bunch downloaded I hope I can say "Play Night Ranger in audible" (just
one example of a book by Alex Berentson I just finished).
Another basic example of something super simple SIRI can't do. Try and ask
SIRI to "Start the Stop Watch". SIRI will tell you "Sorry, I can't help you
with the stop watch". Huh, really, it can set a timer, an alarm, it can create
calendar events and reminders but it can't start the stop watch? Why?

Best regards,
Sieghard

Re: how does iMessage work

2016-06-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Between two Apple devices you can use iMsgs to send texts. This uses
your network and Apple servers. These messages will go out over your
network, which will be wifi if you're on wifi and cellular otherwise. It
does not use your text messaging plan.

You can also use SMS text messages. This is what you'll be using if
you're talking to a non-Apple device. You can also configure the
Messages app to use SMS text messages even between two Apple devices.
This won't use your network, wifi or cellular, but instead will use your
carriers text messaging plan.

iWork and OneDrive

2016-06-15 Thread Grant
Hi all,

Is anybody able to manage iWork documents on an iOS device from third-party
document providers? As of iOS 8, I believe I should be able to do this but I’m
having trouble managing Pages documents that are stored in OneDrive using my
iPhone.

I’m following the steps given in the following Apple support article:
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH17086?locale=en_CA

When I select the “create document” button within Pages, and then select
“OneDrive”, I’m presented with a picker where I can browse the contents of my
OneDrive account and select the Pages document that I wish to modify.

(Note: there are two formats for Pages documents: “package”, which is actually
a folder containing multiple files and folders, and “single file”, which uses
the same format but is stored in a zipped archive. It appears that only the
single file formatted documents will open.)

Once the document is open, I can view the contents and make any changes that I
want. But upon clicking “back” to close the document and return to the previous
screen, my changes don’t appear to be saved. If I open the document right back
up again, it’s the older version that I see; and OneDrive never displays an
updated version of the document.

Can others replicate this? Is there some additional step I am missing?

Thanks,

Grant

Re: IOS 10-- what's new in accessibility ?

2016-06-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Chris. I gotta interject with you here. Being that I'm one of the members of
the beta list, it's not breaking NDA at all. Only beta testers can subscribe to
that list. The moderators ask questions like where your Feedback Assistant app
is and if you don't have one, they'll automatically reject your request to
join. Just thought I'd clear that up and yes, iOS 10 was available for
developers as a beta after the WWDC keynote.

RE: iPhone battery & warranty

2016-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The iPhone 5 battery issue was well documented and publicized, I never heard
about an issue with iPhone 6S or 6S Plus batteries having an issue where a

That is exactly how the battery started acting in my iPhone 5. They had
that program offering to replace the battery for free because some of them
were defective, and luckily, mine qualified.I wonder if some of these 6s
batteries are defective? I would call them with your serial number and see if
they would replace the battery for you.

Subject: iPhone battery & warranty

Hi all,

My iPhone 6s is acting up lately. Shutting down at 30% or 20%. Far short
of 0. The other week, I actually read my battery draining as it was plugged
in. Last Month some of you may remember it was freezing up on me. Little
to no responsiveness. I could not enter in my passcode to unlock the phone.
Oddly enough, at that time, both my iPad and iPhone were acting that way for
about 48 hours.

Onto my warranty question. What is the general warranty. I’m struggling
with Apple’s website to inter my serial number and captcha. This phone is
about 7 Months old I believe. Wasn’t sure if there was a year warranty.

Either way, any tips on what I may do? Would a full restore possibly help?
If so, can I restore from a back up, or do I need to treat it as a new
device?

I think I read somewhere, if it is the battery, a new one is $79 at the
Apple store, but I don’t know if that includes them working on it.

Thank you,
Traci

blocked on both twitter and twitteriffic

2016-06-15 Thread david gross
I keep both twitter and twitterific apps on my Iphone 6plus. I use vo. When I
try and copose a tweet on twitteriffic, the tweet button is grayed out, and it
only lets me save the tweet as a draft.

On the native twitter, it keeps asking me to authorize twitter to access my
photos even though it says that was previously denied.

I donn't know what is going on in eitther case, and I don't have a work around.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: iPhone battery & warranty

2016-06-15 Thread Arnold Schmidt
That is exactly how the battery started acting in my iPhone 5. They had
that program offering to replace the battery for free because some of them
were defective, and luckily, mine qualified.I wonder if some of these 6s
batteries are defective? I would call them with your serial number and see
if they would replace the battery for you.

Thank you,
Traci

RE: iPhone battery & warranty

2016-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tracy,

There definitely is a one year warranty even if you didn't buy Apple Care Plus.
If you take the phone to an Apple store they can do a diagnostic on the battery
which will tell them if there is an issue. Have you tried to calibrate the
battery by discharging it completely until the device turns off by itself, then
plug it in for a good long time (best over night) and then use it again until
the phone shuts off on its own. Charge the battery up one more time over night
and see if this helps.
If it doesn't help then definitely a restore would be another way to try and
correct this behavior. I would make an iCloud backup or, even better, an
encrypted backup in iTunes. Then restore the phone and set it up as a new
phone. Use it for a day or so and see if the battery problem is gone, if so
restore your backup and hopefully this won't also restore the battery problem.
If it works fine at first and then it goes back to what it has been doing after
you do the restore you have to restore it one more time as a new phone. This
means redownload all your apps, change all the settings the way you want them
to be, sync any music or ringtones you may have etc. It can be a few hours of
work, but it can definitely be the best thing to do in some situations.

Sieghard

RE: Labelling photos

2016-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can label them using the custom label gesture which is a 2-finger double
tap and hold. This will, however, only label them in iOS, it is not renaming
the file name and if you copy the pictures off your iOS device to a computer
that label will not be there.

Re: what is this app?

2016-06-15 Thread Richard Turner

I've never heard of it and since it costs $6.99 plus "in app purchases" I am
not sure anyone will try it out without knowing if it is accessible.
Has anyone searched AppleVis to see if it has been reviewed for accessibility?
If it is a PDF you want to scan, Text Grabber may do that, I can't remember,
but Prizmo does.
I think Text Grabber is $6.99 also while Prizmo is $9.99.
Then there is KNFB Reader for $99.99.
It can scan images for sure as well as image PDF files.

That sounds like a good excuse to me, if Apple gives developers access to the
SIRI API then it won’t matter if the commands have to do with Messages or

They say that it is because Siri cannot accurately recognize other types of
commands, but that when it does, those app catagories will get Siri access too.

Hi Sieghard, sad to say, Siri won't be opening your Audible book any time soon.
For iOS 10.0, the Siri API will only work with six kinds of application: ride
booking, messaging , Photo Search, payments, Calling, and Workouts.

Hi Devin,

Yes, some of it sounds very nice, but as others have pointed out, there isn't
much that is really groundbreaking. Collaboration in documents is something
Microsoft has been offering for years and it is high time Apple opened up their
API's to developers especially the one for SIRI. They pointed out that SIRI has
been around for 5 years now and if you really think about it SIRI now is not a
lot better than it was 5 years ago. Yes, it's a bit faster with dictation and
can pull information from a few more sources, but why is it still not possible
to say "Call Kevin from Bigrock Sports" just to give an example of one of my
contacts where I have at least 3 or 4 Kevins in my contacts who all work for
different companies. I can't even create a contact where I just enter a company
name in the company name field and a single phone number and say, for example,
"Call Bigrock Sports". I have to also put the company name in the last name
field to do this. I should be able to say "Show me all my contacts who work at
Bigrock Sports" or I should be able to tell SIRI to "Turn Voiceover Hints On or
Off", but all of these things SIRI can't do. Another example: I can tell SIRI
to "Remind me about my dentist appointment on Friday at 3 PM", but if I say
"Remind me about my 3 PM dentist appointment on Friday at 2 PM" it will say it
will remind me and when I check what SIRI created I see it created the reminder
for 3 PM whereas I want to be reminded at 2 PM that my appointment is at 3 PM.
There is a complicated way to say it so it does what I want, but I should be
able to say it anyway I like or even in two parts like "Remind me about my
dentist appointment at 3 PM on Friday" and when SIRI says it will I should be
able to bring it up again and say "Start reminding me once an hour starting at
11 AM and it should understand that I want a reminder at 11 AM, Noon, 1 PM and
2 PM and maybe by its own intelligence SIRI should remind me again 15 minutes
before if it detects my iPhone is not moving. This is true artificial
intelligence, it already exists, the iPhone has the processing power to do it
and so do Apple's servers.
Try and ask SIRI
to "Start the Stop Watch". SIRI will tell you "Sorry, I can't help you with the
stop watch". Huh, really, it can set a timer, an alarm, it can create calendar
events and reminders but it can't start the stop watch? Why?

Best regards,
Sieghard

Re: Tune In Radio

2016-06-15 Thread Tim Mehok
Richard,
I know that the Pro version of Tune in allows scheduled recordings.
The thing I do not know is if one can schedule multiple recordings for
different stations at different times.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: IOS 10-- what's new in accessibility ?

2016-06-15 Thread Devin Prater
People are talking about it all over Twitter. One thing that has been put out
by the media is a "magnifying glass" accessibility feature for low vision
people, and software TTY for deaf. Voiceover users testing have reported a few
things on Twitter, as usual. If the mods see fit to allow things like that
discussed here, I'll gladly tell what has been posted for now.

They say that it is because Siri cannot accurately recognize other types of

Subject: Update on my "location tracking on" problem

Several days ago, I posted about a problem I was having where the "location
tracking on" was appearing in my iPhone status bar at the top of the screen,
despite the fact that I did not have any apps open that required location
services. Mark suggested turning off background refresh, which I did. Since
doing that, I have not seen that location tracking thing except when it was
warranted, four instance when using a Weather app or a GPS app. I have no idea
why that should work, since if the app switcher is empty, and the app you have
open in the foreground is not using location services, it shouldn't be up
there. But, for whatever reason, Mark's suggestion seems to have done the job.

Re: Plantronics voyager legend and it's extra apps

2016-06-15 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Jenny. I just looked for Plantronics hub in the app store, and it
froze. I guess the search is down for now or something. I just updated
something though, and that worked. I assume this is an App Store app?

Hi Mary,
I have the Plantronics hub and it doesn't do a whole lot extra, but I do use it
to do some settings on it. Yes you can have two phones paired to the deivce and
use them interchangably. I have my iPad and iPhone paired and I can use them

RE: WWDC event, was it yesterday?

2016-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jonathan,

Well, isn’t that nice of Apple. They make such a big deal of how they are
opening up the API’s for all of these iOS features to developers but they
conveniently forget to mention that really they don’t. As much as I like my
iphone and what Apple is doing in many areas, it is very annoying that they are
so backwards in other ways.

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard, sad to say, Siri won't be opening your Audible book any time soon.
For iOS 10.0, the Siri API will only work with six kinds of application: ride
booking, messaging , Photo Search, payments, Calling, and Workouts.

Try and ask SIRI
to "Start the Stop Watch". SIRI will tell you "Sorry, I can't help you with the
stop watch". Huh, really, it can set a timer, an alarm, it can create calendar
events and reminders but it can't start the stop watch? Why?

Best regards,
Sieghard

Sure, but little things add up to big changes. Siri gets integrated into
predictive text, so she can suggest better options there, like I'm at (suggests
input of location into the text)" and stuff like that. Siri is open to
developers, so apps can allow Siri to use their functionality from anywhere.
Apps can do things within iMessage, like allowing sending of money right from
messages. Mac gets Siri, tabs in every multi-window app. People can collaborate
with notes. Unlock Mac

I purchased this Bluetooth earpiece from Amazon. On the page where I bought the

Re: IOS 10-- what's new in accessibility ?

2016-06-15 Thread Scott Davert
There is not a public version of the beta yet, no. That will be
released in July. The mailing list I'm aware of is only for the
discussion of public betas, which as previously mentioned, have yet to
be released. Which means that no one has discussed it there either.
They did talk about picture recognition, so I will just say that this
is interesting for people who want it.

Update on my "location tracking on" problem

2016-06-15 Thread Mary Otten
Several days ago, I posted about a problem I was having where the "location
tracking on" was appearing in my iPhone status bar at the top of the screen,
despite the fact that I did not have any apps open that required location
services. Mark suggested turning off background refresh, which I did. Since
doing that, I have not seen that location tracking thing except when it was
warranted, four instance when using a Weather app or a GPS app. I have no idea
why that should work, since if the app switcher is empty, and the app you have
open in the foreground is not using location services, it shouldn't be up
there. But, for whatever reason, Mark's suggestion seems to have done the job.

those tabs. If you don't, I have no clue why. But something certainly seems to
be strange with your installation. These are not identified by VoiceOver as

Re: Buying books from the iBook store

2016-06-15 Thread Michael Feir
The tabs are definitely there. I've never had a problem locating them
by touching the bottom left, middle or right corner of the screen and
flicking left or right depending on which way you want to move through
them. Once you double-tap on a tab, it will be selected and you'll
hear a sound as the contents change. You then touch the top left of
the screen where you'll find new information and options. I have over
a hundred books and never need to scroll down through them in order to
reach those tabs. Other than a circumstance where your phone case
might extend over the top and bottom of the screen, I can't imagine
what might cause you to miss those tabs.

I don't have tabs at the bottom of the ibooks screen. The only choices
I have are at the top: list view button (could also be set to grid
view), collections then search field. But the search only searches the
books I see on the screen.

Re: Buying books from the iBook store

2016-06-15 Thread Michael Feir
Hello Kimberly. The reason you're finding only books you own is that
it defaults to the "my books" tab. There are three tabs dedicated to
finding and purchasing books. You need to feel down at the bottom of
the screen where you'll find a series of tabs. Double tap on a tab to
change the focus to its contents. You want the search tab if you know
the author or title. Otherwise, there are the featured and top charts
tabs. Hope that helps get you started.

Re: Buying books from the iBook store

2016-06-15 Thread Mary Otten
There are a few ways to purchase books. You can use the search tab at the
bottom of your phone, and then double tap the search field at the top, enter
your title and see what comes up. Double tap on the book title, if it shows up,
and on that page you will then see a price. You can double tap that and then
double tap the buy button or something close to that. You can also use the
"featured" tab at the bottom of the page and look through those things. You can
search in categories. So there are many ways, but it all ends up with you
looking at the title you want, double tapping on the price, and then hitting
that Buy button, entering your Apple ID password oror using touch ID to
complete the purchase if you have enabled that.s

Re: IOS 10-- what's new in accessibility ?

2016-06-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
That's true, but people are perfectly free to discuss whatever Apple has
announced, which would include any new accessibility features that were
announced during the developers summit. I'm not sure there's an IOS 10
beta yet, so no one could talk about what they're seeing in the beta anyway.

BTW, talking about Apple's beta software, even on a beta list, is still
violating Apple's NDA with beta users.

Re: Does IMessage Consume Cel-Data?

2016-06-15 Thread Christopher Chaltain
An iMsg, such as when you're sending a message to another iPhone user,
will use your network, so if you're on wifi then it'll use wifi and if
you aren't then yes it will use cellular data.

An SMS, such as when you're sending a message to someone not using an
iPhone, will use neither cellular data nor wifi but rather your text
messaging plan from your cell provider.

Subject: Pass-through gesture

Hi,

I need to use the pass-through gesture on a site that won’t otherwise
activate the links. My results are somewhat spotty with the pass-through
gesture, so I’m asking here for some clarification.

Is the pass-through gesture to activate an otherwise nonresponsive link on
a webpage:

Double tap and hold?

Double tap and hold, then tap?

Or,

Double tap and hold, then flick right, then tap?

Thanks in advance, Keith

Re: My iPod doc

2016-06-15 Thread Carla Savage
Hi Terri,
Do you have a button on your dock which switches it in to auxiliary mode? That
may be your problem. You won't hear anything out of your dock's speakers but
your phone will charge. I would think that there should be a light by that
button if you have one to indicate it.
Hope this helps,
Carla.
